They have a greenish color and are collected in clusters of inflorescences. Dioscorea Caucasica blooms in May-June. The fruit of the plant is a capsule up to 3.5 cm in diameter, which contains 3 seeds with membranous wings. The fruits ripen from July to September. The liana reproduces both by seeds and vegetatively.

Dioscorea Caucasica is a relict plant. It is listed in the Red Book of Russia as an endangered species. The plant is found in small quantities in the western regions of Transcaucasia in the lower forest belt over an area of about 15,000 hectares. The liana grows in dry deciduous (mainly oak and oak-hornbeam) forests, as well as in bush thickets and on rock ledges. A very small part of this area is of commercial value. Dioscorea Caucasica is recognized as a medicinal plant in both folk and traditional medicine. The harvest of the plant is extremely small due to the small number of the species and the threat of its complete extinction.

Chemical composition

The chemical composition of Dioscorea allows it to be used to get rid of various diseases. Since the plant is used in traditional treatment, it has been well studied and its composition is no secret today. It contains the following components valuable for human health:

  • dioscin is a substance from the category of saponins, which has the unique property of splitting atherosclerotic plaques and cleansing vascular walls from them;
  • fat-like substances – waxy compounds that have a versatile positive effect on the human body;
  • glycosides are complex compounds that have a positive effect on the state of the cardiovascular system;
  • phytoestrogens - substances similar in nature to female hormones and effectively replenishing their deficiency in the body;
  • starch is a substance that has enveloping, astringent and regenerating properties.

Thanks to these components, Dioscorea Caucasica is widely used as an effective medicine.

Contraindications to the use of drugs based on Dioscorea Caucasica

It is not always possible to use medicines prepared from the plant. There are some contraindications to the use of Caucasian dioscorea. It is necessary to refuse this herbal remedy in the following cases:

  • bradycardia (low heart rate) – in this condition, the plant will only worsen the situation, as it has a pronounced calming effect on the heart muscle;
  • hypotension (low blood pressure) – the plant promotes vasodilation, which causes a decrease in blood pressure when used, which in case of hypotension will cause the development of a life-threatening condition for the patient;
  • stroke and the recovery period after it - a contraindication is associated with the fact that the plant provokes vasodilation, which can in this situation cause repeated hemorrhage;
  • exacerbation of gastritis and stomach ulcers - in this condition, taking the plant is contraindicated, as it provokes an increase in the secretion of gastric juice;
  • the period of bearing a child - substances. those included in Dioscorea Caucasica provoke, to some extent, uterine contractions, which can cause premature development of labor or miscarriage in the early stages;

In addition to contraindications, you should strictly follow the recommended dosages and timing of taking herbal medicine. If you violate them to a large extent, an overdose will occur, in which the victim will certainly require medical assistance, and will also need to stop using the drug for a period of at least 2 weeks.

What does Dioscorea Caucasian help with?

Medicines prepared on the basis of the plant are indicated for use as: anti-sclerotic, blood pressure lowering, lowering the level of bad cholesterol in the body, immunomodulatory, cleansing fatty deposits from the liver and blood vessels, normalizing the functioning of the central nervous system, normalizing hormonal levels, improving the functioning of the heart. vascular system, choleretic, improves metabolic processes in the body, diuretic, analgesic and analgesic. In addition, the plant’s ability to relieve alcohol and drug addiction is noted. This is possible thanks to the ability of Dioscorea, firstly, to most effectively cleanse the body of toxins and, secondly, to suppress the activity of areas of the brain, leading to the development of a strong craving for an intoxicating substance, which the patient is unable to cope with.

Liana is primarily used in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, which provokes the development of heart attacks, strokes and gangrene of the lower extremities, due to the fact that it disrupts the passage of blood through the vessels, veins and arteries. Under the influence of Dioscorea, cholesterol plaques are destroyed and harmful cholesterol is removed from the body. As a result of this, the passage of blood is normalized and the threat of plaque detachment from the vascular wall and blockage of veins and arteries completely disappears.

In the case of joint diseases that are based on an inflammatory process, liana-based preparations will also be very useful. When taking them, it is possible not only to eliminate inflammation, but also to relieve pain in the shortest possible time, which makes it possible to improve the patient’s condition from the very first use of herbal medicine.

Dioscorea's ability to reduce blood clotting helps thin the blood if necessary. This is usually necessary in cases of cerebral circulation disorders, as well as age-related changes in blood quality.

Dioscorea Caucasica can also be used as an effective choleretic agent to improve the functioning of the liver and intestines. In addition, this property of the plant allows it to be used to prevent the formation of gallstones.

Don’t forget about the diuretic effect of the vine, which is why it can be used with high efficiency to get rid of edema and remove sand and fine fractions from the kidneys. The herbal medicine acts very strongly, but at the same time gently, so that the person does not experience any unpleasant sensations.

For hypertension, dioscorea helps lower blood pressure by dilating blood vessels. In addition, the plant relieves such unpleasant manifestations of the disease as headache and nausea, which usually always accompany hypertension.

It will also be useful to use Dioscorea Caucasica in case of inflammation of the trigeminal nerve, which causes severe pain. Preparations prepared from the plant not only effectively relieve inflammation, but also relieve pain almost instantly.

Dioscorea with honey

Dioscorea nipponensis

It is an endemic plant of East Asia. It is widespread in the Primorsky Territory, in the southeast of the Amur region, in the south of the Khabarovsk Territory, as well as in China and Japan. The stems are bare, up to 4 m long, the rhizome is thick, horizontal. The leaves are alternate, broadly heart-shaped, with three, five or seven lobes. The flowers are yellowish-green on short stalks, collected in racemes, less often in panicles. For the production of medicinal products, rhizomes are harvested in September-October. Dried raw materials can be stored for 3 years.

Powders and decoctions from the rhizome have a pronounced diuretic, choleretic and anti-sclerotic effect, reduce blood pressure and blood clotting. Dry extract “Polysponin” is produced from the roots and rhizomes, which prevents the deposition of lipids in the liver and cardiovascular system. It removes “bad” cholesterol, improves heart function and increases diuresis. The extract is used for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis and hypertension.

The positive effect of Dioscorea in this case is associated with a slower absorption of cholesterol in the intestine and a decrease in its level in the blood. Cholesterol is retained in the state of a colloidal solution and is excreted from the body without having time to be deposited on the walls of blood vessels.

Dioscorea ivory

The homeland of Dioscorea ivory is South Africa, where this exotic plant grows naturally. Its uniqueness lies in the presence of a spherical above-ground tuber (caudex), which under ideal conditions can reach a height of 3 m with a diameter of 1 m and a weight of up to 400 kg. From a distance, the caudex resembles a tortoise shell, as it is covered with polygonal cork-like growths. With such dimensions, the root system of the plant is surprisingly small and is located mainly in the surface layer of the earth.

Thin climbing shoots sprout from the top of the tuber, the length of which is from two to five meters. The leaves are alternate, broadly heart-shaped, with rounded lobes. Their length is 2–5 cm. Small yellowish-green flowers are collected in racemes. The pulp of the caudex is edible. It is similar to turnip pulp and is rich in starch. For many Africans it is a staple food product.

This type of dioscorea is not used for medicinal purposes, but it is valued as an ornamental plant.

Dioscorea hairy

This perennial herbaceous vine grows in the dense forests of North America (Indiana, North Carolina, Virginia). It has a knotty woody rhizome and thin branching shoots up to 5 m high. The leaves are alternate, pubescent, with 7–11 veins. Petioles are bare or almost bare. The flowers are small, yellowish-green, collected in drooping inflorescences. Dioscorea blooms in June - early July.

Rhizomes containing saponins are harvested as medicinal raw materials. Contraceptives and creams for the treatment of eczema are made from Dioscorea villosa. It is an effective anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antispasmodic, choleretic and antirheumatic agent. Thanks to its ability to dilate blood vessels, dioscorea helps with cramps during the premenstrual period.

The plant contains phytoestrogens, including diosgenin. It is a natural precursor of progesterone. The use of decoctions and infusions of the roots of Dioskoreya hairy during menopause prevents development, in addition, the functioning of the gonads is regulated. Also, preparations from Dioscorea help in the treatment of the urinary tract, etc.

Contraindications to the use of Dioscorea

Dioscorea is not recommended for patients with bradycardia and pregnant women. No other contraindications have been identified. Saponins can irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, so decoctions and tinctures must be taken after meals. When using drugs, in rare cases, side effects may occur: loss of appetite, skin, intestinal disorders, sweating. If such symptoms appear, you should reduce the dose or temporarily stop taking Dioscorea.

The medicinal plant is a representative of the genus Dioscorea and has almost a hundred species. The flexible vine has healing properties, which makes it indispensable in the treatment of many diseases. The biologically active elements contained in Dioscorea Caucasica help restore the functioning of the body.

Dioscorea Caucasica is not only a beautiful climbing vine, but also a healing plant

The vine root has medicinal value. It is in it that steroid glycosides (saponins) are present 2.5-3 times more than in any other form. Thanks to these elements, cholesterol combines with proteins and enters the blood. Such a connection destroys the protein-lipid complex, which provokes the development of atherosclerosis.

But their biological spectrum of activity is not limited to this. With the help of saponins, hormonal drugs are synthesized in the body. The use of diosgenin has also become widespread in domestic medicine. It is formed as a result of the hydrolysis of saponins. Medicines, dietary supplements, female contraceptives and anti-aging cosmetics are prepared on the basis of this estrogen. It is also an excellent alternative for athletes who do not use doping agents.

After treatment with Dioscorea Caucasica, patients felt significantly better:

  • headaches practically disappeared;
  • sleep became sound;
  • vision improved;
  • signs of fatigue and irritability completely disappeared.

In addition to a general improvement in tone, Dioscorea promotes recovery:

  • Motility and secretion of the gastrointestinal tract. When the motor function of one of the departments is low, it has an exciting effect and increases secretion.
  • Functions of the liver and bile excretion. Under the influence of saponins, the synthesis of bile acids in liver cells sharply increases. The plant also has an antitoxic effect on the organ.
  • Structures of blood cells and vessel walls. When the active substances of the plant influence the adhesion-aggregation function of platelets in blood cells and vessels, lipid metabolism increases.
  • Work of female and male genital organs. The hormone-like effect of the herb normalizes the synthesis of hormones in the body, which has a beneficial effect on the functions of the reproductive organs.

When studying the drugs on white mice, an X-ray protective effect was observed, which contributed to an increase in the life expectancy of the animal.

The use of Dioscorea for medicinal purposes

In medical practice, vine root is used to prepare tablets, powders and alcohol tinctures. It is also one of the main components in the production of dietary supplements. As for traditional medicine, decoctions and infusions are prepared from fresh rhizomes or powder.

The most valuable part of the plant is the root.

Respiratory system

For respiratory diseases, tea from the plant is especially useful. For bronchitis and pneumonia, a hot drink helps:

  • increased blood circulation in the respiratory organs;
  • outflow of mucus;
  • increasing the protective functions of the body.

Also, regular use of warm infusion significantly improves the condition of a patient with bronchial asthma. To prepare tea, a mixture of crushed raw materials (1 tsp without top) and a pinch of green tea is poured with a glass of boiling water. Keep the hot drink for 10-15 minutes and drink only once a day after breakfast, an hour later.

Alcohol tincture will help eliminate allergies and chronic inflammation. It is prepared according to the following scheme: 50 g of dried and finely chopped dry root is poured with half a liter of vodka. The composition is kept in a dark, cool place for 3-4 weeks. After the infusion turns golden-orange, it is filtered and treatment begins. The course lasts about 4 – 12 months. A single dose is 30-60 drops. The alcohol infusion is added to boiled, slightly warm water and taken strictly after meals.

Nervous system problems

The plant also has a beneficial effect on the nervous system. Moreover, both the autonomic and central systems are restored equally effectively. After completing the treatment course, the patient’s sleep normalizes, blood pressure decreases, and headaches are eliminated.

Special decoctions are prepared to treat the nervous system. Combine 1 glass of water with 1 tsp. ground rhizomes and bring to a boil. Then place the hot mixture in a water bath for 15 minutes. Next, remove the liquid from the heat and strain. Drink herbal decoction for 1 month, 15 ml several times a day.

Digestion

The root of the vine also has a healing effect on the stomach and intestines. The root is effective and very useful in the early stages of gastritis. To enhance the motility of the entire digestive tract, according to an old recipe, it is recommended to prepare liquid rice porridge with chopped root and eat it for breakfast for 2 weeks.

To reduce bloating, mix the crushed root with grated ginger. Take both components in equal proportions. Add a pinch of fennel, chamomile, lemon balm and mint to the ground mass. 1 tbsp. Pour boiling water (200 ml) over the prepared mixture and drink daily after meals.

The cardiovascular system

The root of Dioscorea Caucasica is especially necessary for older people. For its ability to effectively cleanse vascular walls of cholesterol deposits, the vine from the Caucasus is called the “root of youth.” After taking a medicine based on the root, the patient’s main symptoms of atherosclerosis, manifested by tinnitus and headache, disappear. There is also an improvement in the condition after heart attack, stroke, hypertension and rheumatoid arthritis.

Experts recommend treatment for Dioscorea in cases of adrenal gland dysfunction. Such dysfunction can cause attacks of tachycardia and angina. A therapeutic effect occurs due to increased blood supply and dilation of blood vessels, which allows increasing the supply of the required amount of oxygen and nutrients to the endocrine glands.

To improve the health of the cardiovascular system, an infusion of alcohol is prepared according to the recipe indicated in the paragraph “Respiratory organs”. Also used for healing is powder from dry root, crushed in a coffee grinder. 1/3 tsp. Take the resulting powder three times a day. It is recommended to do this after a meal, washed down with a warm rosehip decoction (50 ml). The duration of the treatment course is about a month with a break of 3-4 weeks. A similar pattern is repeated 3 to 5 times throughout the year. Usually, after the 3rd course, the patient experiences a noticeable improvement in well-being.

Functions of the reproductive system

Traditional healers also call Dioscorea Caucasica a “female herb.” Thanks to its medicinal properties, diseases caused by hormonal imbalance are eliminated. Dioscorea root stops excessive estrogen synthesis, which is very important for patients with endometriosis. Preparations prepared from the root of the plant have a positive effect on the course of pregnancy and the safety of the fetus.

With age, the production of hormones in the female body decreases, and against this background, diseases accompanying this period very often develop: hypogonadism and osteoporosis. Therapy with drugs containing dioscorea root can increase the production of about 20 types of sex hormones by the endocrine glands. This aspect of treatment is especially important for those entering menopause.

The natural hormonal regulator is rich in valuable chemical elements that affect the prescription structures of the female organs. Without causing pathologies in the endocrine balance, the herb has a therapeutic effect not only on the hormonal system, but also improves the functioning of all female organs:

  • regulates the menstrual cycle;
  • eliminates pain and cramps during menstrual syndrome;
  • reduces the risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer;
  • prevents the development of fibroids;
  • eliminates inflammatory diseases: vaginitis, inflammation of the fallopian tubes, endometritis.

For medicinal purposes, alcohol tinctures or ready-made pharmaceutical preparations are used.

By improving blood circulation throughout the body, Dioscorea Caucasica in combination with red clover perfectly increases male potency. To prepare the tincture, you need to cut 50 g of dry dioscorea root and pour it into a three-liter jar. Next, fill the glass container to the top with dry red clover heads. Pour vodka over the entire mixture, cover with a lid and leave for 30-35 days. Periodically, the contents of the container are mixed, and vodka is added as needed. After the specified period, the tincture is filtered and infused for another 7 days. Take the infusion 1 tsp. three times a day for 1-2 months.

Interesting fact: Possessing estrogenic activity, Dioscorea Caucasica does not contain hormones. And this in some cases helps to avoid treatment with hormonal drugs.

Urinary problems

Herbal decoctions and teas in combination with liana will help with urinary disorders

Stagnation of fluid in the body is often caused by poor functioning of the urinary system. At first, the deterioration of kidney and bladder functions goes away without visible signs. But as the pathology develops, sand and stones gradually form in these organs, which ultimately leads to inflammation.

A gentle method of eliminating congestion in the body with the help of a vine helps to avoid such troubles. In such cases, medicine recommends diuretic drugs, which are not always beneficial for humans. You can get a diuretic effect without using such tablets.

Liana tea has a special diuretic effect in combination with other medicinal plants:

  • wild raspberry fruits;
  • horsetail grass;
  • sage leaves;
  • hawthorn flowers;
  • sweet clover grass.

Take 1 tbsp of each component. and mix well. 1 tbsp. pour a glass of boiling water over the resulting mixture and simmer in a water bath for 15 minutes. Take as tea after meals. You can also add 1 tsp to a hot drink to improve the taste. honey.

Organs of vision

Year after year we use our vision: working at the computer, watching TV, enjoying beautiful views of nature or reading books. However, such actions gradually cause deformation of the eye lens. Weakening and decreased elasticity of the muscle fibers of the lens causes diseases such as cataracts, farsightedness or myopia. Such pathologies are considered quite serious and require qualified medical care. But in the early stages, these diseases can be successfully treated with traditional medicine recipes.

A medicinal collection with dioscorea root will help eliminate irregularities in the lens. To prepare it you will need:

  • 4 parts Dioscorea root;
  • 1 part sweet clover;
  • 2 parts sage leaves;
  • 2 parts tzmina flowers;
  • 2 parts hawthorn fruit.

Grind all components and mix thoroughly. 1 tbsp. Pour a heaping amount of the herbal mixture into a thermos and pour 300 ml of boiling water. After two hours, strain the tea and drink throughout the day. Treatment lasts 21 days.

For other purposes

The root of the vine can also be used as an external remedy. For eczema and frostbite, chop the dry root and apply to the affected area. This is the same remedy, but in combination with ground castor bean seeds, it helps well with furunculosis.

Also, Dioscorea Caucasica helps women get rid of excess weight. It is no secret that most of the adipose tissue is water, which is retained due to the intake of carbohydrates into the body. Only 1 g of carbohydrates stores 4 g of water. To make your weight loss program as effective as possible, nutritionists recommend drinking tea several times a day, including Dioscorea Caucasica, rose hips, linden blossom, ginger and dandelion.

Collection and storage of Dioscorea Caucasica

Caucasian Dioscorea (Dioscorea caucásica) is a tall herbaceous vine with climbing stems and velvety “heart” leaves on the back, growing high in the mountains, held on the ground slopes by a thick rhizome. During the Soviet era, few people remembered the real name of this plant, but it was popularly known as “Kremlin grass”: many people believed that it was the tincture of Dioscorea Caucasus that helped elderly Soviet rulers resist age-related diseases.

Of the more than 600 species of Dioscorea in Russia, mainly the one that is called “Caucasian” is used. In the wild, it is found only in western Transcaucasia (Abkhazia) and in the Adler region (Krasnodar Territory) at an altitude of 400 to 100 meters above sea level. The rhizome and roots of the plant have been used for medicinal purposes.

Composition and use

The magical properties of the “Kremlin grass” are given by special chemicals - steroid glycosides, which are part of the rhizomes of the vine. Some of them, entering into a chemical reaction with cholesterol and blood proteins, resist the formation of fatty deposits in blood vessels - atherosclerotic plaques. Therefore, in official medicine, preparations of Caucasian dioscorea are used primarily for cerebral atherosclerosis, as well as associated hypertension and angina. They are also prescribed for increased intracranial pressure, vegetative-vascular dystonia and other vascular disorders. Tincture of Dioscorea Caucasica:

  • reduces cholesterol levels;
  • dilates blood vessels, thereby reducing blood pressure, improving coronary (heart) blood flow and slowing down a painfully rapid pulse;
  • reduces blood clotting, so it is prescribed when there is a danger of blood clots: during heart attacks and during rehabilitation therapy after heart attacks and strokes.

Tincture, infusions and extracts of Dioscorea are also used in the treatment of the digestive system: they normalize gastrointestinal motility, have a mild antispasmodic, choleretic and diuretic effect. It is used for eye diseases, and also as a general tonic and immunomodulatory agent.

According to reviews from elderly patients, after treatment with Dioscorea tincture, their headaches, irritability and fatigue disappeared, their vision and memory improved, and age-related insomnia stopped tormenting them.

How to prepare dioscorea tincture

You can buy an alcoholic tincture of Dioscorea at a pharmacy or prepare it yourself. It should be taken into account that one vine, if dug up completely, produces no more than 200–300 grams of raw rhizome, and after drying its mass decreases several times. This means that high-quality raw materials cannot be cheap! If you try to save money, you won’t even be able to check why the treatment doesn’t help. Perhaps it is not suitable for you, and you should not waste time and use other medications. Or maybe they sold you a root that was unripe or improperly processed after harvesting.

Pharmacy tincture of Dioscorea Caucasica is taken three times a day, 30 drops in half a glass of water. Therapy is carried out according to the scheme “two months of use - a two-week break - repetition of the treatment course” (up to 5-6 times). Dioscorea preparations irritate the stomach, so both pharmacy and homemade tinctures are drunk 30 minutes after meals. At home it is prepared like this:

  1. Finely chop 100 g of dry roots, pour into a dark container, pour half a liter of vodka. Infuse the mixture for 10 days in a dark place at a temperature slightly below room temperature, shaking daily. Take this tincture in the same way as the pharmacy one: 25-30 drops in half a glass of water three times a day, but not two, but from one to three months without a break.
  2. Pour 7 tbsp. l. crushed in a coffee grinder or 8 tablespoons of rhizomes cut with scissors with 1.5 liters of vodka, preparation takes the same time as in the previous recipe. Drink a teaspoon per cup of warm tea for two months, take a month off and repeat. This treatment is prescribed for heart disease and in complex rehabilitation therapy after a stroke. The treatment course can be repeated up to four times.

If you are prone to allergies and chronic inflammation of various organs, the tincture is prepared using the same technology from 50 grams of rhizomes and half a liter of vodka. Drink 3 to 4 times a day, 30-60 drops per half glass of water. Treatment lasts from four months to six months without a break, unless the doctor indicates otherwise.

A properly prepared tincture is light brown in color with a reddish-orange tint. When pouring from jar to jar, foam appears on the surface of the liquid, and during long-term storage, flakes may fall out.

Can everyone take Dioscorea?

It should not be drunk by pregnant or nursing mothers. It is not known how safe it is for a baby (no such studies have been conducted), but you should not test the effect of medications on yourself and your unborn baby.

If you do not exceed the dosage and frequency of doses per day, the tincture of Dioscorea Caucasica does not cause undesirable consequences. But just in case, it is better to start taking it with half the dose. In some people, in the first days of taking it, it causes heart rhythm disturbances and swelling, but after a few days the body gets used to the medicine, and the side effects go away.

Dioscorea Caucasica: uses and contraindications, consumer reviews

During the Soviet era, there was a rumor that the roots of the miraculous Caucasian Dioscorea supported the health and strength of the entire ruling elite. To what extent this opinion was justified is difficult to say today, but there is no doubt about the benefits of this amazing vine. The range of its effects is really wide, and judging by the rare reviews, the effect almost completely corresponds to the stated expectations.

  • The main merit of this plant is its positive effect on the condition of blood vessels: in addition to lowering cholesterol levels, lipids in the arteries are eliminated, microthrombi are resolved, vascular walls are strengthened, and the appearance of atherosclerotic plaques is prevented. In addition, Dioscorea Caucasica is used to prevent stroke and heart attack, restore blood flow in order to reduce intracranial pressure. There are frequent cases of improvement of the functional activity of the heart with the help of Dioscorea.
  • This plant is also of no small importance for the gastrointestinal tract: in addition to the fact that it improves the flow of bile, it also helps cleanse blood vessels in the liver, normalize the functions of the digestive system, and facilitate the absorption of nutrients from foods entering the body.
  • A decrease in intracranial pressure when consuming Caucasian dioscorea is also due to its diuretic effect, at the same time it cleanses the kidneys well and is indicated for gout.
  • In the course of research, it was found that the use of Dioscorea Caucasian tincture can not only improve vision and prevent it from falling, but also restore it in case of cataracts.
  • In relation to the nervous and cardiovascular systems, the plant has proven itself as a stabilizer of blood pressure (both when it increases and when it decreases) and heart rate, and a sedative during epileptic attacks.
  • General improvements in the immune system, memory and hearing, restoration of sleep and performance, and increased emotional stamina of the body were also noted. Decoctions of dioscorea relieve headache spasms.

Application and contraindications to the use of Dioscorea Caucasica

To solve all the above problems, either decoctions and infusions of the leaves and roots of the plant, or ready-made medicinal preparations with an extract from Dioscorea are used. Instructions for pharmaceutical products can be obtained from the manufacturer, and the most common traditional medicine recipes, including contraindications to them, are discussed below.

  • As a general strengthening drink that works to increase the body's resistance to both stress and viral infections, the root of Dioscorea Caucasica is crushed, brewed in a glass of boiling water along with regular green tea in a ratio of 3:7 or 1:4, drunk before lunch, after 40 -60 min. after eating. It is recommended to start with 100 ml, gradually reach a full glass. Single dose, course - from 10 to 14 days.
  • To normalize the functioning of the digestive tract, you can drink the same decoction, but adding dried, ground root of Dioscorea Caucasica to rice or oatmeal (liquid, slimy) porridge is considered more effective. Approximate dosage - 1/4-1/3 tsp. per serving, use no more than 2 times a day. If porridge is not part of your diet, you can add root powder to 1 tbsp. honey and drink it with warm water: you need to do this after meals for 10 days, then take a break for 5-7 days and repeat the course twice.
  • If Dioscorea is used to normalize blood pressure and pulse, as well as improve the functioning of the cardiovascular system, 1 tsp. powder from the ground root is poured into 250 ml of boiling water, in a metal container in a water bath, the broth is heated under the lid for 10-15 minutes, removed from the stove and cooled. 1 tbsp. The liquid is taken after meals, 3 times a day, for 30 days. After this, a week's rest is taken and the course is resumed. Its total duration, including breaks, is 4 months.

  • An alcohol tincture is also effective, for which 100 g of crushed powdered dioscorea root is poured into 1 liter of vodka (without additives!), and the container is put in a dark, cool place for a week. You need to drink the resulting infusion 20-30 drops, depending on the sensitivity of the body, dissolving them in a small amount of warm water. Take after meals, 2-3 times a day, the course lasts at least a month. This tincture is mainly used after a stroke or heart attack, as well as in case of hormonal imbalances and reproductive system functions.
  • Doctors have not established any contraindications for taking Caucasian dioscorea, excluding cases of individual intolerance to the plant. However, an overdose is possible, resulting in increased heart rate, headache, and increased blood pressure. Also, in order to reduce the degree of irritation of the gastric mucosa, all decoctions, infusions and preparations based on Dioscorea should be taken only after meals.

The plant also contains starch and fat-like substances.

Medicinal properties of Dioscorea Caucasica

Decoctions Dioscorea remove spasms at head pain.

Dioscorea Caucasica: reviews of use

Anyone who has taken this plant - in its pure form or as part of a certain medicinal product - immediately notes the “state of degeneration” observed already 3-4 days after the start of the course: perhaps it was not for nothing that Dioscorea was so loved back in the days of the Soviet Union. There are few real reviews on the Internet, but they are entirely positive.

  • Novel: For the 5th year now, I have been treating with the root of Dioscorea Caucasica once a quarter - at first I was recovering from a stroke, then I had to support the vessels and clean them. 2 times a year I drink an alcohol tincture, for 20-25 days, the other 2 times, for 30 days, I add the root powder on the tip of a knife to honey and drink it after meals. I can’t express my condition in words, but at 67 I feel better than at
  • Faith: A familiar herbalist advised me to drink Dioscorea root when the conversation turned to hormonal imbalance due to instability of the pituitary gland: I poured 2 tbsp on her recommendation. crushed root 400 ml of liquid honey, infused for a week, consumed 1 dessert spoon after meals for a whole month. Honestly, I never believed in herbs, but the test results after the course were stunning - the improvements were significant.
  • Tatiana: I drank a water tincture of Dioscorea after severe stress, when my blood pressure began to jump (I’m hypotensive), my pulse began to fluctuate and my sleep was disrupted. I alternated with an alcoholic infusion of peony: in the evening, before bed, and dioscorea before lunch, immediately after breakfast, 70-80 ml. One morning I ate lightly, and after taking the infusion it made itself felt - my stomach tingled: apparently, it was empty for grass. I realized that my mucous membranes are too sensitive. After 3 weeks, the insomnia disappeared completely, the pressure to jump became much less frequent.

In general, reviews from those who have taken Dioscorea Caucasica, although rare, inspire confidence in an almost unfamiliar plant. However, experts advise taking precautions: starting the test with reduced dosages and carefully monitoring the body’s reaction.

Dioscorea Caucasica is a herbaceous plant, a representative of the rather numerous genus Dioscorea of the Dioscoreaceae family. In some countries and various medical sources it is found as wild yam. Due to the valuable medicinal properties of the plant’s root, it is popularly called the “root of youth.” Remedies based on dioscorea root help with atherosclerosis, headaches, hypertension, and tinnitus. This species of the genus Dioscorea is endemic and is found mainly in the Caucasus and the western part of Transcaucasia. Its natural reserves are very limited. Previously, in the territory of the former USSR, only selected people could be treated with it, so Dioscorea Caucasus was sometimes also called the “Kremlin herb.” Currently, effective methods for cultivating the plant have been developed, so it is no longer such a scarcity and is available to everyone.

Botanical description

Dioscorea Caucasica is a perennial vine with a lifespan of more than 40 years. Under natural conditions, it grows in oak and oak-hornbeam forests, clearings, slopes, and bushes. Neutral, clay and rocky soil suits it. Reproduction is carried out vegetatively and by seeds.

The rhizome is powerful, thick and long, located horizontally, and has a brownish-brown color on the outside. Along its entire length it is covered with numerous hard roots. As the plant grows, it goes into the soil to a depth of 1.5 - 2 m.

The stems are climbing, unbranched, their length can reach 2.5 – 4 m.
The lower leaves are whorled, and the upper leaves are alternate or opposite. The leaves are petiolate, heart-shaped, oval, 6–15 cm long, pointed at the apex, with slightly notched edges, separated by arcuate veins. They have pubescence on the underside.

Interesting: The name of the genus Dioscorea comes from the name of the ancient Greek military doctor, naturalist and pharmacologist Pedanius Dioscorides, who described this plant in his writings.

The flowering period is from May to July. The plant is dioecious. The flowers are small, inconspicuous (only 3–4 mm in diameter) with a simple perianth of 6 petals, unisexual, yellowish-greenish in color. Staminate flowers are located 1–3 in a bunch in axillary racemes, and pistillate flowers are arranged singly in racemes.

The fruits ripen from July to September. They are triangular, three-lobed boxes measuring 2.5–3 cm with three membranous wings. The seeds have flat, wing-shaped projections, which provide them with good volatility.

Chemical composition

The rhizomes and roots of Dioscorea Caucasica contain up to 10% of the total amount of steroid saponins, derivatives of diosgenin, the most significant of which are dioscin, protodioscin and protogracillin. These compounds have a wide spectrum of activity. In particular, they are able to bind to cholesterol and remove it from the body, as well as destroy complex complexes of proteins and lipids that form on the walls of blood vessels and are the basis for the further formation of atherosclerotic plaques.

In addition to saponins, wild yam contains fat-like substances, trace elements chromium and selenium, and starch.

Medicinal properties

Remedies based on Dioscorea Caucasica are especially effective for older people, as they:

  • have an antisclerotic effect;
  • reduce blood pressure;
  • dilate peripheral vessels and improve coronary circulation;
  • normalize blood cholesterol levels;
  • reduce blood clotting.

The listed medicinal properties of Caucasian Dioscorea are successfully used in folk medicine for the prevention and treatment of age-related diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, angina pectoris, heart rhythm disorders, and hypertension. With its use, there is an improvement in general well-being, mood, memory, quality of sleep, cardiac activity, and the disappearance of tinnitus and headaches. The plant can be used to prevent heart attacks and strokes, and to improve the condition after them.

Interesting: Thanks to its beautiful bright green leaves in summer and golden yellow leaves in autumn, Dioscorea Caucasica has found application not only in folk medicine, but also in landscape design. Its stems can be used to decorate gazebos, fences, fences.

Dioscorea root also has the following medicinal properties:

  • exhibits a diuretic effect;
  • stimulates the secretory activity of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • improves the functions of the liver and biliary tract;
  • has anti-inflammatory and antiallergic effects;
  • improves general physical condition, helps with fatigue;
  • has a sedative effect on the nervous system, relieves irritability.

It is effective for adrenal dysfunction, autoimmune diseases, vegetative-vascular dystonia, gout, and rheumatoid arthritis.

The plant is successfully used to restore vision in case of cataracts and other eye diseases (conjunctivitis, keratitis, blepharitis). Decoctions and infusions of the plant are taken orally for certain skin diseases: psoriasis, eczema, neurodermatitis, dermatitis. Externally, powder from the root is used for frostbite and furunculosis.

Dioscorea Caucasica contains the compound diosgenin, which is a precursor of the steroid hormones cortisol and progesterone, and has estrogenic activity. Wild yam for women can be used for certain hormonal disorders, premenstrual syndrome and to reduce unwanted clinical symptoms during menopause.

Based on the roots of the plant, a new galenic preparation is made - Disponin tablets, which contain at least 30% water-soluble steroidal saponins. It is prescribed in the complex therapy of cerebral atherosclerosis, general atherosclerosis in combination with hypertension, and cardiosclerosis.

Procurement of raw materials

The roots and rhizomes of the plant are harvested as medicinal raw materials. It is believed that plants that are 25 years old are most suitable for medicinal purposes.

Collection can be carried out from the end of April to the end of October. They do it as follows. The rhizomes are dug up, separated from the soil and the remains of the stems, and then cut into pieces, washed with cold water and dried, spreading in a thin layer, in air or in dryers at a temperature of no more than 50 ° C.

Dried rhizomes and roots of Dioscorea Caucasica have a bitter, slightly pungent taste and are odorless. At the fracture they are whitish, and the outside surface is light brown. Finished raw materials should be stored for no more than 3 years in a ventilated area in paper bags, boxes or boxes.

Important: Wild yam is a relict plant listed in the Red Book; therefore, only plants grown specifically under artificial conditions are currently used for medicinal purposes.

Methods of application

Vodka tincture, decoctions, teas, infusions, and dry powder are prepared from the roots and rhizomes of Dioscorea Caucasica. Considering that the plant is listed in the Red Book and its independent collection and preparation in special places can be difficult, for the preparation of folk remedies, you can use ready-made medicinal raw materials of Dioscorea, which are sold in pharmacies.

Warning: Dioscorea root preparations should be taken orally after meals, as they have an irritating effect on the gastrointestinal tract.

Vodka tincture for heart disease and post-stroke conditions

Dry crushed roots (7.5 tbsp) are poured into 1.5 liters of vodka and left for 10 days in the absence of light. Use 1 tsp. three times a day with warm tea. When all the prepared Caucasian Dioscorea tincture is finished, its use is continued again after a month's break. Treatment consists of 3–4 such courses.

Tea to improve memory, sleep, prevent atherosclerosis and hypertension

Remedy for various chronic inflammatory diseases and allergies

The crushed raw materials (50 g) are poured into ½ liter of vodka and the resulting composition is infused for one month, shaking regularly. Depending on the severity of the disease, the treatment period can range from 4 months to one year.

Root decoction for hormonal problems and cardiac disorders

Then cool, filter, and bring the volume to the original volume with boiled water. Take 1 tbsp for one month. l. three times a day. After a three-week break, repeat the dose. Treatment consists of 2 – 3 courses.

Precautions

When using products from Dioscorea Caucasica, contraindications are also taken into account. These include:

  • pregnancy;
  • lactation;
  • bradycardia;
  • individual intolerance;
  • allergy;
  • low blood pressure.

Despite the relatively small list of contraindications, before starting treatment with this plant, it would not be superfluous to consult a doctor.

The genus Dioscorea, to which the valuable medicinal plant Dioscorea Caucasica belongs, has hundreds of species, but at present scientists have been able to describe and partially study only a few dozen of them. This species of Dioscorea is called “Caucasian” in Russia, since in its natural environment it is found in the southern regions of the country - in the Krasnodar Territory and western Transcaucasia, but its real homeland is India. It was there that once upon a time - they say, back in the pre-glacial era - perennial herbaceous vines appeared, called “deltoid” by modern botanists - the length of the stems of Dioscorea reaches 4 m.

The plant is a relic and is listed in the Red Book; Dioscorea Caucasica is considered the most valuable species of all plants of this genus studied today. Dioscorides, the famous Roman military doctor and pharmacologist who lived under Emperor Nero, described this plant in his medicinal reference books; Dioscorea owes its name to him.

It has been included in the pharmaceutical reference books of other countries for a long time, but in our country it was well studied back in the days of the USSR, but “ordinary” people could hardly be treated with this plant - with the exception of those who lived in places where dioscorea was widespread. The healing properties of Dioscorea are such that it is popularly known as the “root of youth”; it grows in the mountains, and it is not always easy to get it. Therefore, in the USSR only the “chosen ones” could be treated with it: it is no coincidence that the plant had another name - “Kremlin grass”. Fortunately, now the situation is different, and Dioscorea is grown specifically not only in the Caucasus and Kuban, but also in the Far East, and even near Moscow: it can grow in oak forests, in clearings, as well as on neutral, clay and rocky soil.

Rhizomes with roots are used as medicinal raw materials: they are thoroughly cleaned and washed, dried, crushed and dried again to the required degree of moisture - everything is done by hand; Dioscorea preparations cannot be called cheap.

Composition and properties of Dioscorea Caucasica

The most important and main component of the rhizome of Dioscorea Caucasica are saponins, or steroid glycosides - substances characterized by a very wide range of biological activity. It is with their help that hormonal drugs are synthesized: for example, diosgenin, a phytoestrogen, is actively used in domestic medicine, on the basis of which medications, dietary supplements, anti-aging cosmetics and contraceptives for women are created.

Among the therapeutic effects of Dioscorea, I would like to highlight the anti-sclerotic one: its preparations slow down the development of atherosclerosis and hypertension even in unfavorable conditions, since saponins destroy unwanted compounds of proteins with lipids, on the basis of which the disease develops.

Dioscorea infusions and extracts improve the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, and liver and biliary tract; slow down the absorption of cholesterol into the blood - cholesterol is actively excreted in bile, and the liver more easily copes with its function of “the body’s filter.” Decoctions and infusions are also prescribed for eye diseases and insomnia, headaches, fatigue, tinnitus, memory and vision impairment, epilepsy, obesity and diabetes, gout, tachycardia and angina, after strokes and heart attacks. Dermatologists also use dioscorea: it is prescribed internally for dermatitis, neurodermatitis, eczema and psoriasis.

Other properties of Dioscorea Caucasica: diuretic, restorative, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic.

Folk uses of Dioscorea Caucasica

As already noted, roots and rhizomes are used for medicinal purposes. Powders, decoctions and infusions are prepared from them, but the most effective medicinal form is considered to be an alcohol tincture of the root of Dioscorea Caucasica: the active substances in this case are quickly absorbed without being exposed to hydrochloric acid in the stomach. However, let's talk about other forms of using the plant.

Due to the high content of diosgenin, a decoction of dioscorea root is used for hormonal problems, sexual dysfunction and cardiac problems. 1.5 g of dry root powder is poured into a glass of hot water (70°C), boiled for 20 minutes in a boiling water bath, removed, cooled for 45 minutes, filtered and topped up with boiled water to the original volume. Take 15 ml 3 times a day for a month, then take a three-week break and drink the decoction for another month. The course is repeated 2-3 times.

It's prepared in much the same way water infusion to normalize blood circulation, treat tachycardia and headaches, fatigue and nervous diseases, but they do not use powder, but crushed root. 1 tsp raw materials are poured with a glass of boiling water, heated in a water bath for 15 minutes, cooled, filtered; drink as indicated above, but take breaks for only a week.

Tea with dioscorea root helps improve sleep and restore memory, normalize the balance of cholesterol in the blood. The crushed root (1 part) is mixed with green tea (2 parts), brewed in the usual way and drunk once a day, after breakfast.

For chronic kidney and gastrointestinal diseases eat thin rice porridge, to which dioscorea root powder is added - about 1/3 tsp.

For cardiovascular diseases and cerebrovascular disorders powder is also used. It is taken for 10 days, 3 times a day, 1/3 tsp, mixed with honey (3 tsp) and washed down with plain water. Then a six-day break, and repeat the course - this is done 4-5 times.

Externally, dioscorea powders are used for frostbite and furunculosis.

Tincture of Dioscorea Caucasica

Dioscorea Caucasian tincture is prepared in different ways. In recent years, it has been widely used for recovery after strokes, as it effectively cleanses blood vessels and improves blood circulation. The crushed root (7 tablespoons) is poured into 1.5 liters of vodka and infused for 10 days in a dark place, at a temperature not exceeding 23°C. Strain and drink with tea for a month, 3 tsp. 3 times a day. The course is repeated 3-4 times, taking breaks for a month.

For chronic inflammatory diseases of various organs and allergies, 50 g of crushed raw materials are infused with vodka (0.5 l) for a month, in a dark, cool place, shaking regularly. The tincture is filtered and drunk 3-4 times a day, 30-60 drops with water. The course can last 4-12 months, depending on the severity of the disease.

Contraindications and features of taking Dioscorea Caucasica

There are few contraindications to the use of Dioscorea Caucasica. It is better not to use it for bradycardia and hypotension, but sometimes it helps to normalize low blood pressure. Also, pregnant and lactating women should not take Dioscorea preparations.

In other cases, you just need to strictly follow the dosage, and it is better to start with half the dose of the medicine: an overdose can cause heartbeat disturbances and swelling. If this happens, the dose should be reduced for several days: as a rule, the body “adjusts” and the side effects disappear.

You should take any Dioscorea Caucasian preparations only after meals.: This rule cannot be broken - otherwise the substances contained in the plant may irritate the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines.

Dioscorea is a relict plant listed in the Red Book. It was first described by the ancient physician Dioscorides, in whose honor the vine received its name.
The plant has become famous for its healing properties. In the mid-20th century, treatment for Dioscorea was available only to elite segments of the population due to the rarity of the vine in the wild. Currently, discorrhea is cultivated and used for various diseases.
