Російськомовним взагалі важко дається ця тема, тому що ми не розуміємо, навіщо необхідно використовувати артиклі в англійській мові, коли здавалося, і так усе зрозуміло. У російській мові взагалі немає такої частини мови, як артикль. Тому що в рідній мові ми можемо змінювати конструкції місцями для надання відтінків або наголосу на певній фразі, але зміст пропозиції залишиться тим самим. В англійській ж, як ми знаємо, суворо фіксований порядок одиниць, і артиклі ставляться перед деякими словами у певних випадках. Які випадки ми сьогодні дізнаємося.
Для початку вам необхідно усвідомити наступне:
A/an- від one (один)
The- від this / that (цей, це, ця та ін)
Запам'ятавши це, вам стане зрозуміло, чому. a/an«використовується лише в однині.
В англійській поняття артикля пов'язують з категорією визначеності. Основне правило вживання у спрощеній формі можна звести до наступного: якщо йдеться про предмет, який відомий говорить, то перед словом, що вказує на цей предмет ставлять «the» — певний артикль, а невизначені «a/an» — якщо йдеться про предмет невідомий до моменту промови.
- We have bought the dog that we saw yesterday. — Ми купили собаку, якого ви вчора бачили (Йдеться про конкретного, певного собаку — того, якого бачили вчора).
- We have bought a dog. — Ми купили собаку (Ви заявляєте новину, тобто вперше повідомляєте про собаку).
Про те ставити чи не ставити «a/ an» чи «the», і запам'ятати правила, вам допоможуть ці 4 питання та проста схема, яка наочно пояснює кожне правило: 
- У якому числі слово?
- Це слово відноситься до категорії обчислюваних?
- Про нього йшлося раніше? (визначений/невизначений)
- Йдеться про щось узагальнене?
Як бачите, згідно правила в англійській a/an» використовується тільки з «невідомим» показником, якщо воно обчислюється і в однині. А « the»— з «відомим» словом, що обчислюється, в будь-якому числі. Але ви також помітили, що якщо йдеться про конкретний узагальнений предмет, то вони взагалі не використовуються, це так званий «нульовий артикль». Розберемо ці випадки конкретніше.
Правило використання нульового артиклю
Є такі випадки, коли замість артиклів застосовується займенник «some» або взагалі нічого не ставиться. Якщо до слова в російській мові можна поставити одне зі слів за змістом - якісь, кілька, які-небудь, кілька, то в англійській до відповідного іменника додаються займенники. some/any».
А коли в нашій мові неможливо додати жодне слово до відповідного сущест., то в англійському реченні теж нічого не ставиться: I bought some oranges yesterday — Вчора я купив апельсини (деяка кількість, кілька).

The Hon is the king of beasts. Лев – цар звірів (усі леви).
Young man must be polite. Молода людина має бути ввічливою (молода людина, яка представляє молоде покоління).
- Перед іменниками, які є єдиними у своєму роді:
the Earth - Земля, the Sun - Сонце, the sky - небо
