In Moscow you rarely encounter blind people - the world around them is too dangerous and not suitable for their life. BG found several places in the city where blind and visually impaired people can feel like a full part of society

Russian State Library for the Blind (RGBL)

RGBS is located in the House of Education of the World Society of the Blind (World Society of the Blind) on Mira Avenue. This is the country's largest library for blind and visually impaired people, where you can borrow both books with embossed dot font (Braille), and “talking” books (on cassettes), documents on electronic media, etc. It is also possible to place an order by phone and have it delivered directly to your home.

In total, the fund contains 1 million and 365 thousand items: a lot of fiction, among which there are modern authors. True, library visitors themselves complain about the lack of educational and specialized publications and literature in foreign languages.

The library also has a computer room where computer literacy courses are taught for the visually impaired. There is also a canteen in the same building where blind people can have an inexpensive lunch and be sure that they will not be shortchanged.

Cinema "Salute"

In the Moscow cinema for children and youth “Salut” there is no special equipment for viewing films by blind people, but they organize charity screenings for the visually impaired approximately every two months. Mainly for schoolchildren or children from orphanages, but adults can also apply, you just need to recruit a group of at least 10 people. However, the cinema's repertoire is still more aimed at the younger generation.

Cinema "Vympel"

Another cinema for children and youth, where not only visually impaired, but also completely blind people can join the art of cinema. Films with audio commentaries are shown here especially for them. This is a voice-over description of the video sequence, which is compiled by the screenwriter and read by the announcer. That is, a blind person gets the opportunity to “watch” the film by using his imagination.

This year it is planned to launch charity shows - from February, once a month. The sessions will be absolutely free. There are 12 headphones for blind people, and the visually impaired are seated in the first row.

True, the cinema's repertoire is very limited; last year there was only one film with audio commentary - “Welcome, or No Trespassing” (1964). The problem is that there are practically no such films in Russia, and there are also problems with copyright. However, Vympel employees are trying to find a way out of this situation - this year they are negotiating with the Golden Knight film festival to provide charitable films for family viewing.

Rehabilitation complex of the All-Russian Society of the Blind (KSRK VOS)

Between Sokol and Polezhaevskaya there is an inconspicuous gray building of the complex, where visually impaired people from all over Russia can undergo rehabilitation and gain professional skills. In 2009, special training courses were opened here. In particular, blind people had the opportunity to adapt to a computer and take a GPS navigation course. The duration of the courses is 2–3 weeks. For more advanced people with musical education and computer skills, there is a computer arrangement course that lasts 3 months. Upon completion of classes, students receive a certificate of advanced training.

In addition, 9 creative groups work here, and in three sports halls you can play active ball games (goalball, mini-football, futsal), practice judo or arm wrestling, compete with the world chess champion among the blind Sergei Krylov, play a game with the strange name showdown (table tennis for the blind) or practice shooting on a biathlon rig.

Also, several times a year there are film screenings with audio commentary. The repertoire includes 6 films: “Admiral”, “Motley Twilight”, “Scent of a Woman”, “Welcome, or No Trespassing”, “To the Touch” and the cartoon “Shrek”. Admission is free, there are 150 seats in the hall, although there are only about 40 typhoid receivers.

There are many people who want to get into the center, so in order to take the courses, you need to submit an application in advance, pass the introductory test and wait until you are invited. For sports activities you only need a doctor's certificate.

Everyone is welcome here - both Muscovites and residents from the regions. The latter are even provided with a free hotel and food.

Museum named after B.V. Zimina

Despite the fact that the museum is part of the KSRK, it is worth noting separately. Unlike other museums, the exhibits here are not only possible, but also necessary to touch. If the group is small, a friendly caretaker will even open glass display cases and allow you to touch and hold things made by blind people, or things they use in everyday life. It’s hard to imagine that all these things were made by the hands of the blind, even a tiny microcircuit assembled on an assembly line in the 1970s and 1980s. Also in the museum you can learn about blind figures of science, culture and art and print your name or any phrase in Braille - there is a whole collection of typhoid devices, from a typewriter to a banknote identifier and a Rubik's cube for the blind.

The main attraction of the museum is the exhibition “The Blind Sculptor Lina Po”. Here are the works of the ballerina Polina Mikhailovna Gorenshtein, who, having gone blind after suffering from encephalitis, became a sculptor. It’s quite difficult to imagine that a blind sculptor could make a portrait of Chekhov so similar that even the writer’s wife was amazed. So it's better to see it.

People's Theater "Inner Vision"

In this unusual theater, half of the cast are visually impaired, the other half are sighted people who want to gain acting experience. In the process of preparing performances, actors are taught stage movement, speech training, vocal classes, and even taught juggling. Rehearsals take place twice a week in the premises of the KSRK, performances are shown there once a month. Now they are showing a musical fairy tale for the whole family, “The Ring of Wishes.” To expand the repertoire, to stage classics - both the management of the theater and its artists want all this, but, as the director jokes, “it’s hard to play Moliere in shorts and a T-shirt.” In order to turn a folk theater into a studio theater, subsidies are needed, but for now the theater staff is content with what they have and is glad that no one has yet been kicked out onto the street.

Restaurant "In the Dark"

In this restaurant near the Novoslobodskaya metro station, visitors can to some extent feel what blind people experience every day. Here, the sighted and the blind change places: blind waiters deftly maneuver between tables in a hall where pitch darkness reigns, and visitors are forced to eat and communicate in such extreme conditions for them.

The place quickly became quite popular, so you need to book a table in advance - the room can accommodate 60 people in total. Dinner lasts 1.5–2 hours, the average bill per person is 2 thousand rubles. Moreover, what exactly you eat can only be determined by taste and smell. You cannot order a specific dish in advance; you can only choose a menu: vegetarian, meat, fish or Japanese.

It is worth noting that blind people not only work here as waiters, but sometimes come as visitors. They constitute approximately 10–15% of the total number of clients who want to experience new emotions.
