EMBA in Russian. The difference between MBA, Executive MBA, DBA and Mini-MBA programs. Which one to choose? Exams and graduation

Recently, we have been receiving more and more questions about MBA programs, so in this article we will talk about the main features and the difference between a classic MBA program and an Executive MBA.

By the way, if you think and choose between an MBA and a master's program, it will be useful for you - here we talk about the key differences and who these programs are suitable for.

In general, both programs (MBA and EMBA) are very similar in content and learning objectives, but they are held in completely different formats and are aimed at different target groups.

PeculiaritiesMBA programs:

  • The program is designed for professionals and mid-level managers (low to middle level management) with 3-5 years of experience. The average age on the program depends on the school - in the USA it is usually a little lower - 25-26 years old, in Europe and Asia - 27-28 years old.
  • The goal of the program is to provide a set of skills and knowledge necessary for a manager, which will allow him to make a significant leap in his career and / or change the industry immediately after the end of the program.
  • Most of the programs are held in a full-time format - this is an intensive full-time training with full immersion
  • Duration of most MBA programs: 1 year in Europe, 2 years in North America
  • For top schools, it is mandatory to take the GMAT, the average score is approx. 700

Program FeaturesExecutive MBA:

  • The program is designed for top-level managers with 9-10 years of work experience. Most candidates have an average of 14-15 years of work experience. The average age for EMBA programs is 39-40 years.
  • While most students want to change companies/industries on the MBA, the EMBA assumes that you grow within the company (many EMBA students are sponsored by employers). Of course, a field of activity after the EMBA is possible, but this is not the main goal of the program.
  • The format of education on EMBA programs is part-time (correspondence), most students combine work and study. Be sure to read more about this format in each school, because it can vary significantly - in many schools it is expected that approximately once every two months you fly to study for a few days, but there are also a number of programs where studies take place almost every weekend (for example , at London Business School or ESADE)
  • Also, in some schools, a significant part of the study is supposed to be done independently online, with a minimum number of classes directly at the school (for example, on the Executive MBA at IE Business School and IMD schools).
  • For top schools, you need to take the GMAT or Executive Assesment (an alternative GMAT test created specifically for applicants to EMBA programs), although many schools make exceptions (for example, you already have an MBA degree or a first degree in business, or seeing your experience the board believes that it is not required to take the exam). At the same time, there are quite a few strong schools where you do not need to take the GMAT.

Executive MBA (EMBA) is a training program for business professionals with work experience - top managers and business owners. As a general rule, students must have at least seven years of work experience.

The main feature of EMBA programs is modular training, which provides for field modules in other cities or countries. In addition, in education for managers there is little theory and a lot of practice: students solve business cases (case studies), do project work, take part in trainings, master classes and business games, attend interactive lectures.

The first EMBA programs appeared in the US and Europe about 20 years ago. Now they are very popular and are present in the program line of almost every major business school (with the exception of a few of them, for example, Harvard Business School, which fundamentally does not introduce this type of training, adhering to the classical format of daily training for two years).

In Russia, the first EMBA programs appeared in the early 2000s, immediately becoming popular. Almost every Russian business school has one or more EMBA programs in its portfolio, while in Moscow there are more than 40 of them.

Term of study on the EMBA program

Like a regular MBA program, the Executive MBA can last from one to two years with varying degrees of intensity. Usually these are several modules that can take place in different cities or countries (sometimes there is also training on weekends).

Fully remote EMBA programs do not exist, since one of the main advantages of such a program is the opportunity to communicate with leaders of the business community in order to exchange knowledge and expand professional contacts. However, during the breaks between modules, remote learning is possible using modern technologies (lectures, teamwork and case studies can take place online).

Cost of EMBA programs

In Russia and abroad, the cost of EMBA programs is higher than MBA programs. As for Moscow, in the capital there is a wide range of prices for training in these programs, which depends on many factors: the inclusion in the price of expenses for modules abroad, educational literature, etc.

If we compare the prices for an EMBA in Moscow with the cost of education of this level abroad, then education for managers at home turns out to be cheaper. The only exception, perhaps, is the EMBA program of the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, which was published by Kommersant. Money" ranked in 2014 in 7th place in the most expensive EMBA programs in the world.

RANEPA, MIRBIS, Russian School of Economics, Moscow Business School or MGIMO also have their own EMBA options.

As for the cultural capital of Russia, EMBA in St. Petersburg can be obtained, for example, at the Stockholm School of Economics, one of the leading business schools in the world with the “triple crown” accreditations (EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB), as well as at the Graduate School of Management St. Petersburg State University.

  • Module 13

You are constantly faced with the need to lead, manage and influence people. This module focuses on the art and science of leadership and leadership of people. Particular attention is paid to the competence of the leader. We will look at effective leadership models and discuss influential leaders in various fields. Practice exercises will help you improve your decision-making and negotiation skills. To improve your persuasion skills, you will be placed in a situation where you will have the opportunity to improve your speaking skills. This final module in the field of human relations is based mainly on practical exercises. Analysis and feedback from your class presentation in front of an audience is designed to help you improve your rhetoric, negotiation, and develop your personal strategies for success.

  • Module 14: Strategic Business Planning

Recent events have shown that the only thing we know for sure about the future is that it is uncertain. This uncertainty can be broken down into two parts that will form the basis of this module. First, we will look at "measurable uncertainty" through marketing strategy and tactical decisions, including pricing and investment analysis, that are applied in management accounting. Secondly, we will not stop there and go further, because we believe that the creative imagination of "immeasurable uncertainty" is even more important for our future success. Questions will be discussed such as: “What trade-offs should be made between the short and long term when writing a strategic business plan?” As part of this module, you will also have the opportunity to develop and defend your strategic business plan, tailored to the current difficult economic situation.

  • Module 15

A distinctive feature of this module is that its content is based on the wishes of the participants expressed during the two-year course of study. The module includes a business game on the topic of managing companies in knowledge-intensive industries and integrates knowledge and experience gained during several previous modules of the program. You will be able to prove yourself by participating in a detailed review of a successful role model - you will have to give an analysis of the activities of a well-known company. As a rule, this module takes place abroad, so its specific content will depend on the venue. An example of a question that a manager would have to answer is: “What are the important lessons to be learned from the analysis of an exemplary company and how to apply the knowledge gained in your daily work?”

  • Leading Change Implementation Project

The Leading Change project primarily focuses on the development of conceptual thinking and effective change management skills in various areas such as strategy, personnel management, business processes and corporate culture of the organization.
It is based on an algorithm for searching and diagnosing a “problem” in an organization. Using a cause-and-effect analysis under the prism of various management tools, a team of participants develops and implements a logically sound strategy to identify and solve the “problem” in response to any challenges in the organizational environment.

  • Leadership Development

Leadership is the ability to change the world together with other people and with their support. A leader needs knowledge and skills. In order to lead others, you must first learn to understand yourself. It is also very important to creatively create your own leadership approach from the entire set of knowledge and skills and use it effectively at every moment of organizational development.

There are three blocks in the focus of the leadership development program:

    • Learn to better understand yourself through individual coaching and creating a personal development contract.
    • Learn to better understand yourself and others through a variety of group tasks and trainings.
    • To give the participants of the program theoretical models of modern leadership.
  • Thesis for the degree of Executive MBA

An important part of the program is the dissertation for the Executive MBA degree, the work on which helps students develop a deep understanding of the basics of management and critical thinking skills, and also improves their analytical skills. The Executive MBA Thesis builds on the knowledge gained from the modules, but expands and deepens them in part by systematizing participants' work on data collection and analysis. The main requirement for the graduate work of the Stockholm School of Economics is the presence of both theoretical and practical parts. Therefore, the topic of such work can be, for example, an urgent business problem faced by the participant's own company or the industry as a whole. Work on a dissertation begins in the first semester with the choice of a topic. Then, during subsequent semesters, the project develops, and the results of its development are discussed with the leader. Thus, the quality of work is constantly improving. At the end of the last semester, the thesis for the Executive MBA degree is defended before a panel of invited examiners who are not staff members of the Stockholm School of Economics.

  • Exams and graduation

The knowledge of the program participants is systematically tested through tasks carried out between modules and during the modules, and special exams are taken at the end of each semester. The results of these examinations and the thesis for the Executive MBA degree constitute the final grades at the end of the program. The program concludes with a graduation ceremony at which all participants who successfully complete the requirements are awarded an Executive Master of Business Administration diploma, confirming the Executive MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree.
