What are the pills for lactation. Natural remedies for stopping lactation. What not to do

Not mine, licked and inspired by fasting ...:
« Today I, your hepatitis B counselor, want to talk about completing lactation. This topic is very important for the health of the mother. I often see posts here asking to recommend medications for a quick cessation of lactation. And after all, they advise, not realizing that there are pitfalls behind the ease of this method. Let's figure it out ...»

Why shouldn't you use drugs to suppress lactation?

Quite often, mothers are advised to take bromocreptin or cabergoline while still in the hospital to prevent lactation after childbirth or in order to reduce breast engorgement after the arrival of milk. Think, look for information on these drugs, see contraindications. These drugs pass into breast milk. Even if you change your mind after taking the drug, you will not be able to breastfeed for a while. Yes, engorgement can go away, but along with it, the prolactin level will drop sharply, as a result, breastfeeding may not start, or the volume of milk will be insufficient.

Unfortunately, doctors also recommend stopping lactation if the mother is sick, prescribing antibiotics, illness or hospitalization of the child. There are always alternative paths. You can choose medications that are compatible with breastfeeding, or choose the best time to take medications, taking into account the period of their absorption into the gastrointestinal tract and excretion from the body. When the mother is hospitalized, it is possible to express and transfer milk to the baby. If a child is sick, then breast milk helps him to overcome the disease more easily. Advising to stop breastfeeding when a child is sick is just medical nonsense!

The medicinal method for terminating lactation uses prolactin inhibitors, which are dopamine D2 receptor agonists. In connection with the stimulating effect on the dopamine receptors of the hypothalamus, drugs for suppressing lactation have a characteristic inhibitory effect on the secretion of hormones of the anterior pituitary gland, especially prolactin and somatotropin.

Most likely, extracts from medical dictionaries are not quite clear to you. First, let's try to figure out what the hormones prolactin and somatotropin are for.

Almost all pregnant and lactating mothers know that prolactin is a hormone necessary for successful lactation, it promotes the production of colostrum and the conversion of colostrum into mature milk. Also, this hormone affects the growth and development of the mammary glands and the increase in the number of lobules and ducts during pregnancy. But few people know that prolactin receptors are found in almost all organs of our body. Prolactin receptors are found in the mammary glands, in the heart, in the lungs, in the thymus, in the liver, in the spleen, in the pancreas, in the kidneys, in the adrenal glands, in the uterus, in the ovaries, in the testes of men, in skeletal muscles, in the skin and in some parts of the central nervous system. However, the effect of prolactin on them has not yet been studied.

Some scientists believe that prolactin is involved in immune responses. In inflammatory processes, infections and other cases, when the immune response is triggered, the secretion of this hormone by leukocytes increases. Therefore, on the surface of many cells involved in the immune response, there are receptors for prolactin.

As mentioned above, medicinal methods of inhibiting lactation also affect the production of somatotropin.

Growth hormone is a growth hormone. Its functions include stimulation of the synthesis of macrophage, lymphocyte, immune globulin and the growth of lymphoid formations, regulation of fat metabolism, improvement of osteometabolism, kidney and heart function, rapid wound healing. In short, the hormone somatropin affects mood, mental abilities, an increase in immune function, and a person's energy level.

Growth hormone can interfere with the function of other hormones. For example, it successfully suppresses the function of insulin, which stimulates the uptake of glucose in tissues, and equally successfully fights against an increase in glucose synthesis in the liver. Thus, growth hormone successfully maintains the required level of insulin in the liver.

To suppress lactation, drugs with an active substance are prescribed bromocriptine or cabergoline.

Bromocriptine (trade marks Parlodel, Bromolactin, Krypton, Bromocriptine)

Overseas trade names (overseas) - Brameston, Broman, Bromergon, Bromocrel, Bromo-Kin, Bromopar, Cycloset, Encript, Pravidel, Provasyn, Umprel.

Most often, bromocriptine is used to suppress lactation in the CIS countries. Bromocriptine inhibits prolactin secretion. The lower the level of prolactin in the blood, the lower the effectiveness of the drug. That is why preparations with such an active substance are not recommended for use in several European countries.

Even the State Pharmacological Committee of the Russian Ministry of Health recommended the use of bromocriptine to suppress lactation only in severe septic mastitis due to the possible development of serious complications such as pulmonary embolism, stroke, decreased visual acuity and others, up to death ("Safety of drugs", bulletin No. 1, 1998; Bulletin No. 1, 2000).

Statistics: Between 1980 and 1994 there were 531 reports of adverse reactions following bromocriptine use in women aged 15-40 years, including 32 deaths from stroke, myocardial infarction and hypertension.

When using bromocriptine, other side effects are also possible in the form of nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, psychomotor agitation, allergic reactions, cramps in the calf muscles.

The use of bromocriptine is contraindicated in severe forms of cardiovascular diseases, uncontrolled arterial hypertension, hypersensitivity to ergot alkaloids. It is necessary to regularly monitor blood pressure (BP), especially in the first week of therapy. In case of development of arterial hypertension, especially with the appearance of severe headaches, the drug is canceled and an appropriate examination is immediately carried out.

Trade names abroad (abroad) - Actualene, Cabaseril, Caberlin, Cabgolin, Lac Stop, Lactamax, Parcar, Sogilen, Sostilar, Triaspar.

Cabergoline is an active ingredient similar to bromocriptine. It is a potent inhibitor of prolactin secretion with a long-term effect. Carbegoline stimulates dopamine D2-receptors of lactotropic cells of the pituitary gland and reduces the content of prolactin in the blood, which is noted 3 hours after taking the drug and lasts up to 14-21 days.

Among the side effects that can be observed with the use of cabergoline are nausea, vomiting, headache, general weakness, abdominal pain, constipation, decreased blood pressure, psychomotor agitation, cramps in the calf muscles. This drug should not be prescribed for postpartum psychosis or a history of postpartum hypertension and with caution in cardiovascular diseases, Raynaud's syndrome, renal or hepatic failure, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding. Therefore, when prescribing carbegoline, it is necessary to monitor blood pressure and the functions of the gastrointestinal tract. With an increase in blood pressure, persistent headaches or any signs of neurotoxicity, the drug should be discontinued. It is important to remember that with the simultaneous use of carbegoline with antibiotics from the macrolide group, the risk of side effects increases.

After completing breastfeeding in this way, at least half of women develop lactostasis or mastitis. In some cases, the result is mastopathy and subsequent hormonal disruptions, which are treated for a long time and persistently. Interference with the hormonal system is always a risk. Think how much you need it? Please note that you will have to care for your baby while you are taking and using these drugs. You may need help from family or friends.

Remember that breast milk contains a lactation inhibitor. It is designed to slow down the process of milk production. The more milk there is in the breast and the less often it is emptied, the more inhibitor it contains and the less milk will be produced.

Therefore, if you decide to stop breastfeeding, gradually reduce the number of breastfeeding or breastfeeding. Do not express your breasts "to the last drop", only until you feel relief, gradually removing the expression. If you feel breast fullness, but there is no soreness, the breast is soft, there is no temperature, then you do not need to express. To reduce milk production, you can use herbal infusions - mint and sage.

You now know how hormone production is affected by drugs to suppress lactation, and what role these hormones play in your body. Remember that there is no objective reason for using drugs to inhibit lactation. Any such drug is a gross interference in the work of all body systems. No one is investigating the long-term consequences of their use, because it is not beneficial to the pharmaceutical industry. And the occurrence of individual reactions is generally impossible to predict. Hormonal suppression of lactation quite often does not lead to the desired result, lactation does not disappear with a wave of a magic wand.

Reviews on the use of medications to suppress lactation:

Anna 07.12.2011

I drank this dostinex, on the one hand it helped a lot. I had purulent mastitis, and no one could do anything, it was necessary to urgently stop lactation, but at the same time it was unrealistic to express my breasts. Dostinex was prescribed to drink 1 tablet + another one after 12 hours. after 3 days the milk was gone and the breast was swollen. And I went to the operation.

But the biggest problem is that after him I gained almost 20 kg. After giving birth, weighed 60, and literally in 2 months 80 !!! It's just awful!!

I advise you not to drink such strong pills, but consult with your doctors.

Great chemistry will do its job!

The doctor warned about pressure surges (since I never felt it, I thought it was nonsense - we will break through with this pressure) and, in general, said to take it very carefully.

Since the child is small, and even without her beloved breast, a couple of times she woke up at night, I had to be rocked, and it was then that I felt all the delights of the drug: it darkened in my eyes, it made a noise in my head, wildly nauseated, my heart almost jumped out, but to stand and I couldn't sit at all. Only when I gave the child to my husband and fell into bed did everything more or less return to normal. In the morning, the same thing, somehow I could still crawl to the toilet and the kitchen - I just forcibly stuffed the food into myself, because it was terribly nauseating. And all she could was just lying. Mineral water and sleep saved me.

The thought that such a nightmare would last another 10 days was horrifying. After all, 10 days to lie in bed with a small child is unrealistic. But, fortunately, the very next day it became easier. But new symptoms appeared: wild drowsiness, absent-mindedness and lethargy, in connection with this small lapses in memory. There were sensations that my head was empty and clean, and therefore calm. Only by the end of taking the drug (I still finished all 30 pills) did some kind of angry irritability appear. And also "Bromocriptine" is some kind of diuretic - at night I had to run to the toilet, because it was really impossible to endure until the morning.

I had to take this drug when my son and I went to the hospital. He was almost 2 years old but was still sucking. In the hospital, it was necessary to immediately wean him from the breast, which was given to me with great difficulty. But that's a completely different story ...

So, I had to take bromocriptine for about 10 or 14 days. Honestly, I don't remember exactly that. To reduce lactation and to avoid stagnation. On the first day, I took it in the evening and did not notice anything, I slept normally. But on the second day of application, "fun" began - a terrible, simply unbearable headache, I even did not think well, I was very sick, I could not sleep, I could not behave adequately. The most interesting thing is that I did not associate this with the use of this drug. I am hypotonic, and the symptoms were the same as with low blood pressure, but intensified 10 times. I didn’t say anything to the doctors, because this is a children's department, they just had no time for me. After 3 days, I realized that I couldn't do this anymore. This terrible headache and nausea did not want to go away. It was at this time that I read the instructions completely by accident. And it immediately became clear that I was so bad from bromocriptine.

But! Already on day 3, my lactation dropped significantly. And I decided to hold out as long as I could, because I had already started taking the drug. I had enough for 2 more days. I thought I was going to die. I could not stand the entire course. Nevertheless, these 5 days were enough for me to avoid stagnation. Lactation not only decreased, but also quickly stopped altogether.

I was convinced that in my particular case the drug was effective, it helped me avoid the problems that occur when you abruptly wean a baby. But then problems of a different nature arose - too pronounced side effects. I don't know if using bromocriptine is worth it to endure such pain. I still cannot give an exact answer. I can only say that it is better to ask the doctor for some alternative.

Kler 03/20/2012

Well, I'll start with the fact that I appointed it myself when I decided to quit breastfeeding. A friend of the child did not breastfeed at all, and after the hospital bought this drug (advised in the pharmacy). I have never experienced anything like it. I was lying in bed. I couldn't get out of bed. Terrible headache, nausea. I could not look after the child, so I had to turn to my mother for help. In general, horror. I didn't think there could be such side effects. I thought that I would probably die. Then, when I went online, I realized that I was not the only one, there are many similar cases. It is necessary to select such things after all after the recommendation of doctors, and very carefully read the instructions for use (there are just side effects there).

Kirina 10/16/2011

I drank to suppress lactation after medically abortion.

The doctor prescribed for 14 days, 1 ton. 2 times a day. I immediately warned that the pills are very dangerous, that you can faint, and dizziness and nausea, etc. And he said that it is better to take a pill and lie down for half an hour, but if it is really bad, then reduce the dose.

Well, the first days I drank calmly and everything was ok, and decided not to reduce the dose. Dizziness was, of course, but terpino. But one morning I got up and went to the toilet and did not reach, fainted right in front of the toilet door (although I hadn’t taken a pill yet, I took it at night). Everyone was scared. And after this incident, I reduced the dose (0.5 tons, 2 times a day). Sleepiness, tiredness and dizziness accompanied me throughout the reception.

And I also felt like I gained weight.

The process of physiological weaning of the baby from the breast should be slow. Ideally, weaning time takes 2-3 months. Often there are cases when, for some reason, a woman can no longer breastfeed, but the feeling of discomfort in the mammary glands remains. Breastfeeding pills can help resolve this issue quickly and painlessly.

Completion of breastfeeding is a natural step in the life of mom and baby. The timing of breastfeeding is individual, but according to WHO standards, it is not recommended to feed for more than two years. Further, the child does not need breast milk. Long-term feeding causes health problems in the mother. Osteoporosis is considered to be the main pathology.

However, there are reasons that require immediate cessation of feeding:

  • mother's desire;
  • separation from the baby;
  • late termination of pregnancy;
  • serious diseases of the mother (HIV infection, tuberculosis, diabetes mellitus);
  • deep prematurity of the baby (especially with cerebral hemorrhages);
  • stillbirth;
  • breast abscesses.

In severe conditions, drugs to stop lactation should be drunk immediately after childbirth. Feeding is contraindicated for mothers with severe abnormalities in the function of internal organs. Drug suppression of milk production must be prescribed with extreme caution, due to the danger of exacerbation of the underlying disease.

What pills are used against lactation

When there is a problem of completing natural feeding, the question becomes which pills to choose. All medications are aimed at inhibiting the production of the hormone prolactin.

Hormonal and non-hormonal drugs are used. Non-hormonal agents have a calming effect. They require long-term and systematic use. Hormonal drugs act more aggressively, but the healing effect occurs immediately.

The main groups of pills used to suppress breast milk production are:

  • sedative non-hormonal drugs;
  • estrogens;
  • gestagens;
  • prolactin inhibitors.

Lactation suppression pills affect the endocrine and central nervous system. They normalize hormonal balance and set the rhythm of hormone release.

Today, the vast majority of mothers use substances that reduce the level of prolactin in the blood. These drugs are much easier to tolerate and have fewer side effects.

Non-hormonal sedatives

Bromcamphor belongs to the group of non-hormonal sedative pills. The main ingredient of the product is bromine, which has a sedative effect on the central nervous system. The medicine suppresses the processes of excitation in the brain, provides psycho-emotional comfort.

Bromcamphor is used to reduce lactation for mothers suffering from neuralgia, sleep disorders, panic attacks, mastalgia. The drug can be used if there are contraindications to hormonal treatment.

Prolactin inhibitors

Prolactin inhibitors include a semi-synthetic drug called cabergoline and bromocriptine. The most common cabergoline analogs used in medical practice are:

  • dostinex;
  • alactin.

Most often, dostinex is prescribed. The agent inhibits the production of the hormone prolactin in the pituitary gland. It is rapidly absorbed in the intestines. The drug effect of Dostinex begins 3 hours after administration. It has a long-lasting and persistent prolactin-lowering effect even after a single use. It is used to stop lactation.

The trade name for bromocriptine is parlodel. The drug interacts with the central organs of the endocrine system, thereby sharply reducing the production of hormones. Inhibits physiological lactation by normalizing hormonal imbalance. It influences the work of the ovaries and the formation of menstrual function. Does not affect uterine contraction after childbirth. Smoothes the phenomena of postpartum depression.

Stabilization of hormonal levels is observed within two weeks after treatment. Expression of the mammary glands is not required. The remedy reduces the number of cysts and dilated ducts of the mammary glands. Side effects are rare. Can be used by women with a tendency to form blood clots.

Medicines in this group are categorically contraindicated in women with brain tumors. The course of use of prolactin inhibitors is 10 days.

Preparations of prolactin inhibitors inhibit the processes of excitation in the brain, slow down the reaction, and disperse attention. Therefore, at the time of treatment, you cannot drive vehicles.

Estrogen-containing medicines

The most famous representatives of estrogens used to stop lactation are synestrol and ethinyl estradiol (microfollin). They are used to suppress prolactin secretion. An increase in the level of estrogen in the blood reflexively reduces its amount.

Medicines from this group are not very widespread due to the large number of undesirable consequences from the gastrointestinal tract and kidneys. They have the ability to retain fluid in the body, causing edema. The medicine is strictly forbidden to use by mothers suffering from varicose veins.

Gestagens

Gestagens are hormones of the second phase of the menstrual cycle. Gestagens affect the level of hormones in the blood according to the feedback principle: the more gestagens, the lower the level of prolactin. They are safer than estrogens.

To stop lactation, you must take high dosages of gestagens. The most commonly used of this group is norethisterone. The trade name for which is norkolut. The mechanism of action of the substance is to block the release of hormones from the pituitary gland and reduce the secretion of milk. The course of treatment is 10 days.

If, after the end of the course of treatment, the mother changes her mind and wants to continue breastfeeding, then the remaining milk must be expressed within a week. Then you can give the breast to the baby.

Undesirable consequences

All medicines used to complete breastfeeding have similar adverse reactions. They adversely affect the gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and nervous systems. The negative effects after taking lactation drugs are:

  • nausea;
  • vomit;
  • dizziness;
  • headache;
  • cramping pain in the abdomen;
  • increased pressure;
  • an allergic reaction to the medication.

Basically, the negative effects after the use of medicines that stop the production of breast milk are observed after exceeding the daily dosage. If complaints appear against the background of the use of medications, first of all, it is necessary to stop taking the substance and immediately consult a doctor.

Contraindications

Hormone-containing drugs have a number of contraindications for use. It is not advisable to take medications for the following conditions:

  • hormone-dependent tumors;
  • preeclampsia during pregnancy;
  • postpartum psychosis;
  • varicose veins;
  • deep vessel thrombosis;
  • hyperplastic processes of the genitals and mammary gland;
  • diabetes;
  • disorders of the liver and kidneys in the stage of decompensation;
  • heart diseases;
  • an allergic reaction to the drug.

Very often women are not aware of the presence of diseases and cannot give an adequate assessment of their condition. Means to complete breastfeeding can worsen the course of chronic illness. Therefore, before starting the appointment, you should consult with your doctor and clarify the state of health.

Features of taking drugs

First of all, indications for completing natural feeding are established. Then, taking into account the associated pathologies, a medicine is selected. You can start taking medications only after consulting a doctor. The daily dosage and the duration of the course of treatment are individually prescribed.

Before using the medicinal substance, women who stop lactation should make sure that they are not pregnant. Planning a pregnancy is not recommended earlier than a month after the course of therapy.

Before starting to suppress milk production, make sure that you no longer need to breastfeed your baby. After using the first pill, breastfeeding should not be given to the baby. The drug is absorbed into breast milk and can cause metabolic disorders in the baby.

It is advisable to drink less fluid during drug treatment. Limiting fluid intake will compensate for milk ejection. Excess fluid provokes secretion in the glands. Do not pinch the chest with bandages or bandages. This can stop the flow of milk. Congestion leads to inflammation of the breast ducts called mastitis.

The first dose of the medicine begins with a low dosage. If the substance is well tolerated, then the dose is increased to the daily rate. If you feel nausea half an hour before using the medication, antiemetic substances (metoclopramide or cerucal) are used.

Medication to reduce lactation is very popular in the pharmaceutical market. They are indisputably necessary when there is a medical indication to stop breastfeeding. With the successful completion of natural feeding, discomfort in the mammary gland is not felt. However, self-medication can cause irreparable damage to health.

Not all young mothers want to breastfeed, and not all can breastfeed. In such cases, doctors prescribe pills to the young mother to stop lactation. Medications to stop lactation are available commercially at any pharmacy. However, it is not worth taking pills for lactation uncontrollably, like taking pills for cough or constipation.

A young mother should be aware that they have many side effects. Besides, artificial cessation of lactation not always good for mother and child. On the contrary, during times of problems, it is best to start taking medications that have a positive effect on the breastfeeding process. It is better to take medications for a lack of milk than pills to stop lactation. However, young mothers should know all the pros and cons of drugs that artificially interrupt this process.

Lactation pills: benefits and benefits

Medications for stopping lactation interrupt lactation quickly and at the same time save a young mother from many of the problems that arise when lactation is artificially interrupted without pills. Breastfeeding drugs protect the young mother from mastitis, lactostasis, and other unpleasant symptoms. Also, such drugs help stop lactation as soon as possible. The main advantages of such drugs are as follows:

  • Timely use of lactation tablets helps to maintain a beautiful breast shape, avoid stretch marks and sagging skin;
  • These medicines can be used immediately after childbirth, or much later, at any time when the young mother wants to stop breastfeeding;
  • The use of pills does not have a negative effect on the general well-being of a young mother. The very next day after the start of taking medications, a young mother who completes feeding can safely go to work. Mothers taking such pills can continue to lead a normal life, they do not need to take sick leave or be monitored in a hospital;
  • Tablets and contribute to the rapid establishment of the menstrual cycle after childbirth.

Arguments against such drugs

Many doctors oppose these drugs. Indeed, drugs negatively affect women's health, and taking such drugs often causes a variety of side effects. Doctors who do not approve of the use of such pills give the following arguments against;

Indeed, both childbirth and artificial termination of breastfeeding are powerful stress for a fragile woman. However, these two stressors significantly differ from each other... Childbirth is a positive stress that mobilizes a woman's immune system. Childbirth is a natural process. Artificial interruption of lactation is an external invasion of the female body, which is akin to violence against female nature. Therefore, this stress factor, unlike childbirth, sharply depresses the defenses of the female body and can subsequently lead to serious complications, both physical and psychological.

Many young mothers who have artificially interrupted lactation subsequently feel guilty about not breastfeeding their baby. Wanting to make life easier for themselves by interrupting lactation, they, on the contrary, complicate their life and face new problems... Establishing proper artificial feeding of a baby is much more difficult than breastfeeding. You need to choose the right mixture, observe feeding strictly according to the clock, thoroughly wash and sterilize the bottles.

In addition, artificial nutrition very often causes allergies or individual intolerances in children. ... Breastfeed your baby on the contrary, it is very simple: the baby feeds on demand, feeding can be done anytime and anywhere, breast milk protects the baby from serious infectious diseases. Therefore, a mother who has decided to interrupt lactation must firmly know that the advantages of artificial feeding are much less than the disadvantages.

When to give them up

Any similar pills- these are potent hormonal agents that can only be taken as directed by a doctor, strictly observing the dosage and hours of admission. Before prescribing such pills to a patient, the doctor must necessarily talk with the woman and tell her about all the advantages of breastfeeding:

Before taking any means to stop lactation, a young mother should weigh the pros and cons. It is best to seek advice from more experienced moms. who were breastfeeding their babies and were happy with the experience. Perhaps their advice will be a powerful incentive for the nursing mother to make the decision to fight for breastfeeding rather than interrupt it.

If the woman has already started taking medications that help interrupt breastfeeding, the course of taking must be completed... It happens that young mothers start taking such pills, and then stop taking it as soon as the milk disappears. This is a serious mistake that can lead to serious complications. Even if it seems that there is still no milk in the breast, the mammary gland continues to produce milk for some time inertia, so the course of taking pills for lactation must be completed.

Lactation- an important stage in the life of any young mother. Those who breastfeed their own child at least for a short time never regret it. But those women who, for some reason, missed this opportunity, very often express regret about this. If the mother has no medical contraindications to breastfeeding, breastfeeding must be fought. Artificial interruption of lactation has a negative effect on both the baby and the mother. So there must be a really good reason for taking the pill that interrupts lactation.

There are situations when a mother needs to stop breastfeeding, in which case pills to stop lactation come to the rescue. They should be used only as a last resort and in consultation with your doctor.

In what cases are drugs used

For a number of good reasons, a young mother has the question of how to stop lactation of breast milk? The best way is gradual, in which case the milk will burn out, and the process will be painless for both the mother and the baby. But it is not always possible to spend 2-3 months on increasing complementary foods and natural weaning.

The stopping pills help in two days. But you need to use them only when necessary, with caution and on the recommendation of a doctor..

Many women start taking medication to get to work faster. The consequences of such self-medication can be disastrous.

You need to understand in what cases you need to drink pills to stop lactation:

  1. Detection of purulent mastitis.
  2. Urgent surgical treatment of the mother.
  3. Pathologies in the development of the mammary glands or nipples.
  4. Taking strong drugs and antibiotics.
  5. Milk intolerance in a child.
  6. Late miscarriage or stillbirth.
Do not use tablets if you need to temporarily stop lactation, for example during a trip, since then the lactation cannot be returned

Anti-lactation pills are used even when breastfeeding is naturally stopped.

A month after stopping breastfeeding, milk may begin to be produced in small quantities. Then pills to stop lactation are justified.

If it is stopped for a while, then it is restored by refusing to accept or using a special means.

For example, Apilak lactation tablets have positive reviews, they strengthen the general condition of the body and improve milk production and its quality.

The most famous remedies

There are a variety of lactation suppression pills available. Almost all of them stop the production of the lactogenic hormone prolactin. Some means for stopping lactation contain a complex of male and female hormones that change the hormonal background, thereby contributing to the stopping of milk.

Means of the first type are considered effective. They run on semi-synthetic cabergoline or bromocriptine.

The most popular and one of the most expensive drugs is Dostinex..

The composition includes cabergoline, one capsule contains 0.5 mg.

For effective work, they are taken in half, thus reducing the likelihood of adverse reactions.

If you need to stop immediately, then the dose is increased to a whole pill, and the risk of many side effects increases.

The medical community believes that lactation pills Dostinex have less negative effect on the body than its analogues and generics... However, this opinion is not always justified. Consideration should be given to individual reactions to the active and excipients. Women notice different effects from the same drug, a specialist selects it.

On the basis of the substance cabergoline, the drug of the same name works. Its excipients coincide with the prototype - leucine and anhydrous lactose. Although it is identical in composition, some patients report more negative effects on the body.

This is due to the placebo effect, since Cabergoline is cheaper, its price is associated with quality. Another active ingredient is bromocriptine, and on its basis there are also pills to stop lactation.

Tablets for stopping lactation Bromocriptine are based on bromocriptine mesylate in an amount of 2.5 mg per tablet.

It also stops the production of prolactin. Auxiliary are magnesium stearate, colloidal silicon dioxide, lactose, talc, microcrystalline lactose and corn starch.

Stops milk production in 2 weeks, which distinguishes it from the above-described predecessors. Pills for stopping lactation Parlodel - analogue of Bromocriptine, he has the same indications for use and composition.

Pros and cons of drugs: how to make the right choice

Considering any pills that stop lactation, it is difficult to identify those that will act the same in every case.

One of the side effects of Dostinex and Bromocriptine may be depression, as prolactin levels drop sharply

The main advantage of cabergoline-based drugs is speed.- they stop milk production after two days.

But famous drugs are expensive. If we talk about bromocriptine, then its cost is affordable, but it will take two weeks to use it.

They have many contraindications and possible side reactions.

They manifest themselves individually - in one woman, the cessation of feeding is painless, while the other from the same medicine will experience a full bouquet of negative effects.

The main advantage of all funds, with the exception of Dostinex, is the cost, and Dostinex is considered to be of high quality due to its high price.

Admission rules, contraindications and side effects

How to properly stop lactation with medication? The answer is obvious and lies on the surface: follow the instructions and follow the doctor's instructions.

For a painless refusal to feed, do not self-medicate. An experienced doctor appoints an appointment, and further monitors the condition of the mother.

Dostinex or Cabergoline are taken half twice a day for the first 24 hours, and then one whole time every 12 hours for 48 hours. In this case, the mother expresses milk, since you cannot breastfeed while taking medications.

Read more about complementary foods for a baby who is on artificial feeding.

They cause nausea, headaches, dizziness, indigestion, and lower blood pressure. If the dose is increased, it can lead to allergies, heart attacks and strokes.

Contraindications include:

  • sensitivity to the active substance;
  • children under 16 years of age.

This takes into account the diseases of the mother, such as disorders of the functioning of the kidneys and liver, ulcers, disorders in the work of the cardiovascular system. Treatment is carried out with extreme caution if any disease is detected.

Bromocriptine, Parlodel, Bergolak and other drugs based on bromocriptine not used if the patient has tremors, psychosis, toxicosis, cardiovascular diseases and intolerance to the constituents of the drug. They are taken one capsule twice a day for two weeks.

Nursing mothers are often interested in the question: how much breast milk is stored in the refrigerator? After reading in our article, the question can be considered closed.

If the baby is not breastfeeding, then the mother always has additional worries: read 8 tab. - 1700 rubles.

How to choose the right drug

There is no one-size-fits-all advice on how to choose pills to reduce lactation. They are selected by a specialist, taking into account the patient's condition. However, Dostinex pills for stopping lactation have more positive reviews, doctors often recommend this particular drug.

What are those that are available in our pharmacies you can follow the link given.

But in no case should you assign it to yourself on your own..

The pills for stopping lactation should not be taken without a doctor's prescription. These drugs can quickly stop the release of milk, but a woman will have to pay for this with her well-being. If the mother, after taking such drugs, felt pain in the chest or noticed bleeding, an urgent need to consult a doctor.

It is advisable to consult with a breastfeeding specialist about how it is painless for the baby to stop breastfeeding before lactation stops. Next, you need to figure out which drugs to suppress milk production can and cannot be used, and what side effects you need to be prepared for.

What do you need to know before stopping lactation?

Today, you can observe the trend of a conscious approach to breastfeeding the baby. Many mothers try to maintain lactation and prolong it for the maximum period. And this cannot but rejoice, since the beneficial properties of breast milk can hardly be overestimated.

However, there are situations when the mother is forced to stop breastfeeding for some reason. In addition to factors caused by circumstances, medical indications can also be observed. For example, if you have osteoporosis, long-term feeding is contraindicated. Often, doctors can detect in a woman an increased level of prolactin in the blood, in which case it is possible to breastfeed, but it is necessary to be monitored by an endocrinologist.

This also applies to pituitary adenoma. If this neoplasm was detected after the birth of the child, then it makes sense to stop lactation in order to prevent its growth.

Endocrinologists believe that lactation should end with involution after going through all the phases. It is difficult to talk about specific terms, since this process has an individual character for each woman. However, you still need to obey the recommendations of doctors and give the baby a maximum of useful substances. For example, a baby is recommended to be fed for at least 9 months to prevent the onset of type 1 diabetes.

Often, women after childbirth do not begin breastfeeding, but they continue to produce milk at the same time. Then you need to stop lactation as soon as possible so as not to harm your health. There are several methods and means that help to stop milk production, the most popular are special medications.

Drug cessation of lactation

If the natural completion of lactation has not been achieved, then you can resort to the medication method. However, it is important to understand that all pills for stopping lactation have a wide range of contraindications and side effects, for the manifestation of which the mother needs to be prepared.

It is important to note that in no case should the baby be applied to the breast after the woman has taken medication to stop lactation. Naturally, a sharp change in the usual way of life can negatively affect both the mother's well-being and the condition of the baby, therefore, medical termination of lactation should be started only in extreme cases.

Indications for drug cessation of milk production:

  • late termination of pregnancy;
  • the birth of a still child;
  • purulent mastitis;
  • pathology on the part of the mother (oncology, tuberculosis, HIV);
  • pathology on the part of the child (galactosemia and phenylketonuria).

Drugs to stop lactation should be taken only after a doctor's prescription. Despite the wide range of these medicines, their main mechanism of action is the same - to reduce and suppress the production of prolactin. Therefore, the doctor must choose just such a medicine that will be most suitable for a woman, taking into account the individual characteristics of her body.

All lactation suppression pills have a similar range of side effects that a woman should be prepared for.

These include:

  • weakness and fatigue;
  • nausea and vomiting;
  • dizziness and headache;
  • drowsiness.

These are the most "harmless" side effects that will go away when lactation stops completely.

However, you need to prepare for more serious contraindications, such as:

  • depression;
  • hormonal dysfunction;
  • disturbances in the work of the endocrine system;
  • exacerbation of chronic diseases.

Often, it takes a lot of effort, time and money to remove side effects. Therefore, you need to think several times before refusing lactation with medication.

Drug overview

Dostinex or Cabergoline

Cabergoline is a synthetic drug from the ergoline group. In pharmacies it can be found under the trade name Dostinex. This substance has a pronounced and long-term effect of reducing prolactin. Once in the body, Cabergoline blocks the secretion of prolactin, directly affecting special receptors. Even 3 hours after ingestion, a significant decrease in the level of prolactin in the blood is observed in the woman's body. At this level, the hormone can last from 7 to 28 days. The effect during postpartum lactation lasts about 3 weeks.

This drug has a number of contraindications, including renal or hepatic failure, postpartum psychosis, hypersensitivity to individual components of the drug, gastritis, ulcers, etc. Often a woman may not even be aware of the presence of some kind of disease (for example, gastritis). To prevent possible complications, she needs to consult a doctor before taking Dostinex.

Bromocriptine

Bromocriptine today is also often used in the practice of Russian obstetricians. This medicine is based on ergot alkaloids. They are the ones who influence the production of prolactin. In Russia, Bromocriptine is recommended by a specialized committee of the Ministry of Health to reduce lactation if a woman has severe forms of septic mastitis. If, with such diseases, a woman does not take measures to cause an interruption in milk production, there is a risk of pulmonary embolism, stroke, or even death.

It is important to note that this drug is banned in the United States due to the large number of side effects. Since the introduction of Bromocriptine on the market, many patients have complained. Cases of death have also been recorded.

Steelboestrol and Estrogen

These 2 drugs are practically not used today to suppress milk production, however, women should know the name of each of them in order not to fall for the bait of unskilled specialists or scammers.

Stilboestrol has been used in the past, but due to the high risk of negative effects on the body, it is no longer prescribed. After a course of using this medication, a woman may repeatedly swell her breasts, accompanied by painful sensations, bleeding and thromboembolism may occur.

During pregnancy, Stilboestrol is contraindicated for use, as it can cause fetal abnormalities.

Estrogen is a hormone that is used in conjunction with testosterone. He was discontinued after the discovery of the same symptoms as after taking Stilboestrol. Levodopa is considered to be similar to estrogen. This is also an outdated drug that is very difficult for patients to tolerate.

When choosing a means to stop lactation, a woman should be at least a little guided in this matter. Taking medication solely because someone advised it or it is sold at a low price can end in failure.

Tea to stop lactation

Traditional medicine also knows many ways to reduce milk production. Typically, this is a tincture or herbal tea that has a decreasing effect on prolactin synthesis.

Diuretic herbs are often used for this purpose to remove all fluid from the body. These properties are possessed by: jasmine, basil, horsetail, common belladonna, parsley, lingonberry, etc. You can use either a single herb or herbal collection. The leaves of these plants must be dried, covered with boiling water and allowed to brew. Then it can be taken as tea.

Sage tea has proven to be a good way to stop the production of breast milk. First you need to prepare an infusion based on 2 tbsp. l. herbs and 1 liter of boiling water, then strain and let cool. This tea should be taken after meals, and after 3 days, you will notice a positive result. Sage tea is also able to strengthen the immune system and treat infertility.

Peppermint tea can also help reduce breast milk production. First, the mint must be dried and chopped. Then 2-3 st. l. crushed raw materials must be poured with 2 cups of boiling water. Such an infusion should stand for about an hour, then it must be filtered and taken as tea, 0.5 cups 3 times a day. Such a medicine can be stored for no more than two days in the refrigerator.

Herbs that stop lactation cannot be positive in one go. They need to be taken regularly, only then the milk will gradually decrease. However, even this seemingly harmless method that reduces the amount of prolactin can negatively affect a woman's well-being.

What if milk is still being produced?

Suppression of lactation with the help of special drugs is possible only if the woman is sure that she is not pregnant again. Since nursing mothers often do not have menstruation, many may think that it is impossible to become pregnant while doing this. This is not the case, as ovulation can occur spontaneously.

Sometimes it happens that a woman decides to take pills to reduce lactation, already knowing about a new pregnancy. In such a situation, it is strictly forbidden to take Dostinex. After taking this drug, doctors recommend preventing a new conception within the first month.

A woman should be aware that the completion of lactation does not always mean a complete cessation of fluid secretion from the nipples. Sometimes it can appear periodically during the first 3 years after the last feeding and after any pregnancy (it does not matter how it ended).

Spontaneous secretion of fluid from the breast can continue for the first 3-6 months after taking the pills, which have a suppressive effect on milk production. If the discharge continues to appear after this time, you need to seek help from an endocrinologist. After doing all the necessary examinations, the doctor can diagnose hypothyroidism, prolactinoma, or Skien's syndrome.

If the discharge is small, you can prevent it from recurring by wearing tight underwear. You also need to reduce nipple stimulation during sex or self-palpation.

Cessation of lactation is a natural process, the violation of which can provoke the development of serious diseases. A breastfeeding woman should consult with a specialist in order to choose the most optimal stopping method and determine drugs to suppress lactation. Self-medication in this situation is extremely dangerous.
