Rating of Chinese smartphones under $100 on Aliexpress: review

Buying an ultra-budget phone is always a battle of compromises. Anyone who buys a cheap gadget immediately expects it to have a bad camera, a not very capacious battery, and a cheap plastic body. Despite this, inexpensive models are in great demand. Let's discuss five best models phones on Aliexpress with a cost of around $100.

The critical drawback of this phone is the touchscreen, which supports only two touches and a very bad camera. But, if this is not so important for you, then it will be just right for saving.

Despite its low price, the phone has a metal body and a fingerprint scanner. If it also had LTE, that would be great.

The Chinese always monitor the needs of their customers and know exactly what they need. Instead of working on performance like others do, they released models with high-capacity batteries. The cheapest of all is with a price of about $100, but the fact that it is cheaper does not in any way affect its functionality.

Of course, the smartphone also has some disadvantages. This is not the best screen matrix and the camera leaves much to be desired. Although this is quite forgivable, since there is support for LTE, and in a wide range, Android Lollipop without unnecessary programs, assembly, body material and a capacious battery. Few smartphones can boast such a capacity.

Although the Chinese lied about the shock resistance, overall the smartphone is not bad.

We will help you navigate the choice of smartphone in the “under $100” category. And in the end we will choose the best.
And yes, taking into account some factors, prices are traditionally given in green. And as a place to buy, we choose popular Chinese services, such as Aliexpress, Gearbest and the like. By the way, our telephones also come from the Middle Kingdom.

But this is not a cause for concern, because the Chinese copying industry has undergone significant changes, and it has now been replaced by serious and self-sufficient brands. Many, by the way, even have official representative offices and service centers in the CIS. That's how it is with the next hero of our article.

Price: ~55$

Doogee, as it describes itself, is “a young Chinese brand of smartphones and wearable electronics.”
For this money, the company is ready to offer you several models, most of which are slightly better than the one presented.

But we made our choice, guided by just one, but very important decision. After all, there are still those who don’t trust, who don’t know how, and who are urgent. So, Doogee X5 is officially presented by several large Ukrainian retailers, and at a very reasonable price. A definite plus is also the warranty provided. As for residents of other nearby countries, have we already mentioned Chinese online platforms? :)

By the way, a few weeks ago an updated version was released with the MAX prefix, in which the battery capacity was increased (4 Ah versus 2.4 Ah) and RAM (2 versus 1), a fingerprint scanner and LTE support appeared, and cameras were improved (now 8 MP each) and changed the design a little.
And the difference with the previous version is only about $5-10.

And then we noticed one interesting feature- most smartphones in the budget category, like flagship solutions, have almost no different characteristics. The only differences are the name, design and, most importantly, the price.

Unlike the previous model, it has a newer processor with LTE support, more RAM and permanent memory, an increased battery capacity, slightly improved camera modules and a display (by the way, Gorilla Glass 3), covered with 2.5 D glass. And in appearance it is very similar to Meizu M2 mini.

Price: ~80$

Well, this baby is here because of its interesting design. The abstract pattern of the back cover is somewhat reminiscent of the solution used in Zenfone Deluxe 2 from Asus. And if you want to stand out from the crowd, even without spending too much on expensive flagships, or you are simply tired of the monotonous design, then this will be an excellent purchase solution. Although it is always better to stand out with your knowledge.

Bottom line

Why are Xiaomi, Meizu, Elephone and other equally worthy companies not on the list?
It’s simple, they are more expensive :) But our budget is limited, like the guys from “Heads and Tails”.
However, they will definitely appear in our next selections of smartphones “affordable and capable.”

Which of the presented smartphones has the best price-quality ratio?
My choice is Doogee X5 Max. This is one of the best models presented on the market today, in terms of the ratio of the two criteria described above. And with the saved $35-40 you can, for example, buy good headphones or a Power Bank. Well, or both.

What smartphone would you buy if you had such a limited budget?

If you find an error, please highlight a piece of text and click Ctrl+Enter.

You won’t surprise anyone with premium smartphones; in modern gadgets you can find everything: from a metal case to sapphire crystals, heart rate monitors and retinal scanners. The price of the Apple iPhone is growing year by year, like most of the top manufacturers on the market. But most simply do not need this, and such premium devices are opposed to ultra-budget smartphones costing up to $100. What are these gadgets? Are they worth attention, and are there any worthy specimens among them?

Inexpensive, high-quality smartphone for basic needs

The first thing to look at is the little-known one. The device is compact and fits well in your hand. The smartphone has a 4-inch screen, a 5 MP main camera and a quad-core Spreadtrum SC7731 processor. For normal everyday tasks like social networks and searching on the Internet, the power of the smartphone is enough, the device does not slow down, but you should not expect miracles from the Lenovo A1000.

High quality smartphone with good battery

The scourge of modern gadgets is the battery. Why do we need all the bells and whistles like cameras, ultra-resolution screens, if the phone runs out of power, and even basic functions become unavailable.

The longer the device works on a single charge, the more reliable it is. Apparently, Oukitel thought so and released the K4000 model with a 4000 mAh battery. This volume will provide a whole day of smartphone operation; you can safely take the device on a long trip without fear of battery drain and without the need for an external battery. Not all top flagships can boast such a capacity. However, you still shouldn’t hope that the device will work for a week without recharging, like the good old Nokia 1100.

Famous public sector employee

If suddenly unfamiliar brands scare you, then you should take a look at the Meizu M3 Mini smartphone. The gadget has well-balanced characteristics that will allow you, in addition to “every day” tasks, to also use your smartphone in games and heavy applications. In addition, Meizu services will provide the user with a comfortable experience right after purchase, without unnecessary settings.

Longest-lasting budget smartphone

It turned out that not only Oukitel received a large battery. Homtom has even surpassed the K4000 model in terms of battery capacity. Homtom HT6 has a whopping 6250 mAh. In normal use and everyday use, the smartphone can last for several days, and when optimizing applications and enabling an energy-saving mode, the device can last up to 5 days on a single charge. No smartphone has been able to achieve this time, making the HT6 a unique representative in the line of budget gadgets.

Which inexpensive smartphone is better?

But which smartphone is the best among state employees? This is Xiaomi Mi4c. After all, the smartphone has a 5-inch display with Full HD resolution and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor. This combination will ensure full functionality with absolutely any application, including playing heavy Android games or running several applications simultaneously.

Budget smartphones are certainly not suitable for everyone, but it’s worth paying attention to such devices, because sometimes their features are very attractive.

Buying an inexpensive smartphone - what's the risk?

If you are not ready to shell out a tidy sum, then you will simply have to come to terms with the limitations of the device.

Risk #1 - disappointment

Ultra-budget smartphones, as a rule, are equipped with basic hardware; the camera lacks stabilization, zoom and focus. At some point, you simply may not have enough power.

Risk #2 - quality

The lower the price of a smartphone, the lower the build quality and materials. This means that the case, screen, and buttons will quickly wear out and lose their presentation. The housing often plays and creaks.

Risk #3 - service

The lower the quality of the phone, the higher the risk of breakdown. There are no problems with service centers and repairs; they exist in many cities. But not all breakdowns are covered under warranty, and not everything is repaired for free. And I don’t want to be left without a phone.

Many modern people I can’t imagine my life without a good smartphone. After all, this is not just a way to stay in touch with loved ones and colleagues. It is also an assistant in entertainment and work. Of course, most users prefer to choose a cheap but high-quality smartphone. Is it possible? Or will a person who decides to save money have to settle for a weak phone? It turns out not. Let’s compile a rating of Chinese smartphones costing up to $100, so that anyone who wants to upgrade their outdated device can get high-quality equipment for a small amount.

The best smartphones from China under $100 with a large screen

One of the criteria that users pay attention to when buying a phone is the screen. A year ago in search budget smartphone for $100, a Ukrainian user found ambiguous and unreliable devices. In 2016, the situation improved and, in addition to ordering a device from a Chinese website and waiting two months, a consumer can go to any large Ukrainian mobile network and choose a smartphone there for $100. Nowadays, devices with an HD display, a 4-core processor, an 8 megapixel camera, a pleasant appearance and a battery up to 3000 mAh. ( , or ). Of course, there are a lot of pitfalls here, but we’ll still tell you why you can buy a budget smartphone in 2017, and talk about the advantages and disadvantages of such devices.

Cheap devices run almost the same applications as expensive smartphones

The 4-core processors and graphics chips of modern budget smartphones are capable of running the same games and applications as top-end devices. In the case of resource-intensive 3D games, they will take longer to load and you will have to admire the splash screen for a couple of minutes. But they work, albeit at low-medium graphics settings. There will also be a noticeable difference in the image on the screens of a $100 and $500 smartphone. Still, the price difference between them is too great to require more from a budget employee. Therefore, any games and applications can be launched on a modern cheap device. These can be serious 3rd person shooters like Modern Combat 5, and racing games like Need For Speed, and even GTA: San Andreas. So why pay more?

Cheap smartphones are now equipped with HD screens

Smartphones with screen resolutions of 800×480 or 960×540 pixels are still sold on the Ukrainian market. But modern Chinese new products under $100 have nice-looking and adequate HD (1280×720) IPS displays (Doogee Valencia 2 Y100 Pro or). The screens of such 5-inch devices are not grainy, pleasing to the eye, and viewing angles can be viewed up to 175 degrees. Things are a little worse with 5.5-inch smartphones. They are equipped with the same HD matrices, but with such a diagonal “grains” are observed. Therefore, it is better to choose a smartphone with a 5-inch screen.

They now have cameras up to 13 megapixels inclusive

If previously a budget camera would shoot through three layers of dirty film, now they are equipped with passable modules up to 13 megapixels. In most cases, they have 8-megapixel main modules and 2-megapixel front ones. But this is better than the famous 0.3 megapixels of the front camera, through which nothing could be seen. In addition, the mass consumer, most of whom do not understand the filling, often has low demands on technology. Therefore, even a slight improvement in the camera’s shooting quality is perceived by him as a big step forward. And yet such cameras take acceptable photos. I'm pleased with the quality of their shooting in good lighting. Just don’t shoot the sun, its rays, people against the background of the sun, and so on. Although there is an HDR mode in budget cameras, activating it gives practically no results. And in the bright sun during the day, you can no longer always determine which phone was taken - cheap or expensive. In any case, photographs taken with these cameras are no longer ashamed to show to friends or relatives, and then post them online.

Budget smartphones are starting to look good

Yes it is. The Chinese have learned to make stylish, varied and attractive models. Nowadays, decent-looking devices are increasingly found on shelves. different forms, sizes and types: streamlined, rounded, sharp, convex, thick, thin and others. Moreover, some budget models began to be made not only from plastic, but also to add aluminum inserts and even protective glass.

In the vast majority of cases they work with two SIM cards

Most flagship smartphones come with a single SIM card. The reason is simple - such devices are designed for users from developed countries, where people buy smartphones in a network of stores that belong to mobile operators. And they sell devices with ready-made contracts. Budget devices have two SIM cards, because they are designed for developing countries and Third World countries. There, people, firstly, buy devices on mobile networks, without concluding a contract with an operator. Secondly, they save on everything, including cellular communications. Standard example savings with two SIM cards in Ukraine - the user has a work SIM card and a personal one. He uses one number only at work, the second is needed to communicate with relatives or friends.

Due to the average filling, the battery lasts longer

Powerful hardware, Quad and Full HD displays, 20-megapixel cameras with flashes on each side, laser autofocus, mechanical image stabilization and fast charging technology, all of this drains the battery. And the cooler the device, the more energy it consumes. Yes, these phones are equipped powerful batteries and software gadgets that do their best to keep the expensive flagship in working order.

What about budget smartphones? Does their battery last more than a day? Usually no, although there are more and more devices with a 3000 mAh battery (and even 4000 mAh) that are capable of this. And the main thing is that these devices work 24 hours without problems. The fact is that the low performance and average HD display of a budget smartphone does not consume as much energy as top-end devices and screens installed on them with resolutions similar to a 32-inch TV. Moreover, in a budget device for $100, you are not overpaying for battery-saving technologies that are already included in the price. And most importantly, if you use your smartphone correctly (turn off wireless modules, Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi that are not needed at the moment, adjust the screen brightness depending on the lighting, delete unused applications from the memory), you don’t need to worry about its charge and operating time.

Take into account the fact that inexpensive smartphones are bought by people with small needs and conditionally single-tasking use - they do not install a bunch of applications, do not run ten of them at the same time, and therefore they do not need performance. But they will appreciate that the phone needs to be charged not every evening, but once every 2-3 days.

You don't overpay for the brand

Smartphones from popular brands with the same characteristics are more expensive. It is a fact. This price includes: service, warehouse, personnel training and certification, advertising support, marketing costs, office rental and employee business trips around the country. And when buying an inexpensive device, the user should understand only one thing: simple thing: the lower the price, the higher the risks and responsibility for the decision to buy such a smartphone.

To understand the situation, we compared the characteristics of the Samsung J120H Galaxy J1 (2016), Doogee X5 Max Pro and. Despite the fact that the price difference is not in favor of the Samsung device, it loses to its competitors in terms of characteristics and price. Interestingly, the Doogee X5 Max Pro also has an adequate fingerprint scanner. You will object that this is Samsung, or unknown Chinese brands, but according to statistics, the chances of the devices breaking down are almost the same. Of course, the quality of control also plays an important role. Samsung has it higher, but this smartphone is more expensive and weaker. And which of these is more important, everyone decides for themselves. Moreover, both devices have a 1-year warranty and if anything happens, they will be repaired or replaced.

A lot of cases, films and accessories have appeared for cheap devices

Now the number of accessories on a Chinese budget phone is no less than on an expensive flagship. Large retail stores, and with them benches, trays, booths and other places selling accessories for smartphones, provide owners of inexpensive devices with films, glasses, cases and other gadget-maniacal things. And we haven’t yet touched on dozens of Ukrainian online stores, plus AliExpress, GearBest and Ebay.

Budget Chinese phone has an official guarantee

Chinese smartphones sold in retail chains have full service and a guarantee. Such stores hire qualified craftsmen and purchase the necessary spare parts. Among Chinese brands in Ukraine, only ZTE, Huawei and Lenovo have direct support from the manufacturer. In this case, you can go there bypassing the store, simply because there is such an opportunity.

In such cases, keep in mind that the official service centers are staffed by the same people as the retail outlets of mobile networks. There they can also be rude, send you away, refuse repairs or warranty service. Of course, it happens that the store where you bought a smartphone that has an official service center, cannot help with repairs, but the service center helps. But most often, a standard store warranty is enough to allow you to return the device, replace it, or simply get your money back if the manufacturer is at fault. Another thing is that this will require you to wait for diagnostics, which can be carried out by the store for up to 34 business days. But that is another story.

These simple rules will help you avoid problems and choose an adequate inexpensive smartphone:

  • Before purchasing a device, do the first and main test in the store. Examine the device carefully, launch different applications, turn on games, videos, listen to loud music, check the camera, take a photo, record a video and see how quickly it starts. Please note that after a couple of months the speed of the device will decrease. And all because you will gradually clog up the system with leftover files, a cache of deleted applications, two simultaneously running antiviruses and a dozen or so running programs.
  • After purchasing, continue testing the device at home for several days. For the first 2-3 days, do not remove the protective films - this will make it easier to return the phone to the store. If nothing has broken in the device during this time, then most likely it will not break further.
  • Remember that you can replace the purchased phone within 14 days or return the money ONLY () if the smartphone is in a marketable condition and you did not drop it, did not carry it in your pocket, did not drop sauce on it, or scratch it when you took out the SIM card And so on. If the seller notices even the slightest hint of use outside the home, but you swear to him that “you haven’t used it at all, but only a little at home,” then rest assured, he will send the device for diagnostics. Let me remind you that by law it can take up to 34 working days, although this is usually done much faster. Nevertheless, such cases are not uncommon.
  • Don't shout, don't be rude, be calm and confident. If you are not a lawyer and are not familiar with such issues, do not tell store employees about your rights and do not say that they are obliged to do this or that. Believe me, in mobile networks, every employee knows these laws thoroughly and much better than you. And yes, even if you read the necessary articles of legislation before leaving.
  • This leads to the last point. If the device is broken or does not work, do the following: take the smartphone, the receipt for its purchase, documents, box, passport or driver license. After that, go to where you bought it and calmly, without emotion, tell the sellers and administration about the problem and ask for help. Most likely, the store staff will meet you halfway and try to solve the problem on the spot. If it doesn’t work out, they will send it for diagnostics as quickly as possible, change it, or tell you what to do next. And this will be accompanied by smiles, attention and European service. Remember that under any circumstances you just need to remain human.

We are of course interested in the opinion of our readers on this matter. How do you feel about state employees? Do you use it yourself or not? What about your loved ones or friends?
