Sleep mask: getting ready for work

How to sew a do-it-yourself sleep mask? In order for a sleep mask to cope with its task, it is important to choose the right materials from which it will be made.

Sleep mask is sewn from two or three layers. The first, front layer, can be sewn from any fabric (except the thinnest), choose the color and texture to your liking. The fabric you choose will determine whether you need a second layer - interlining. If the outer fabric transmits light, you will need to make an extra layer of dense material. You can use a thin padding pad for the mask to be worn in a cool environment.

And finally, the last bottom layer. It is this fabric that will be in contact with the skin, so it should be natural and pleasant to the touch. We recommend natural silk. In addition to the fabric, you will need about 40 cm of soft elastic band 1-1.5 cm wide. Specify the length by measuring the circumference of the head and subtracting from there the length of the mask at the attachment point, then add 2 cm to the allowances.

The sleeping mask pattern is given in two versions: standard and large sizes. Cut both options out of paper, hold them over your face, and choose the most comfortable one.

So let's find out how to sew a DIY sleep mask!

Cut open

Download the pattern and print both versions of the mask. Apply to face and choose the most comfortable one. Cut one piece from each fabric: front, inner and, if necessary, interlining. Prepare the elastic.

Decorate the face of the mask. In our case, stitching along the contours of the mask with a contrasting thread is made.

Stick an elastic band to the face of the mask, as shown in the photo and try on. Adjust the length of the elastic and the location of its attachment.

Pin or baste the inner part of the mask on top. The elastic will be inside the fabric layers.

Straighten the seam allowances, iron and stitch close to the edge while sewing the open seam at the same time.

A healthy and full sleep is not only a guarantee of your beautiful appearance and well-being in the morning. It also helps to increase immunity, protecting it from various diseases of the nervous system. Such a dream is possible only if certain factors are observed: a suitable time for sleep, comfortable clothes and a mattress, a comfortable air temperature, and complete darkness. If everything from the list is clear to us and can be easily implemented, then the last point raises questions. After all, it is not always possible to achieve complete darkness with curtains. In this case, it is very simple to make it with your own hands, so we suggest you study a master class on creating a useful accessory.

What is the best material to use?

A DIY dream mask is made of fabric and elastic. Lace, fleece and so on can be used as decoration. The tools we need are a needle and thread and scissors.

For sleeping, it consists of three parts: the main one, the seal and the lining. For the main (top) part, satin or silk is usually used. Such fabric is pleasant to the touch and looks beautiful. You can also use other synthetic and natural materials (such as linen or cotton).

Non-woven material is used as a sealant. It is soft and quite dense - this is what you need for a night accessory. Thanks to this layer, a self-made dream mask will not press on the eyes and at the same time it will keep its shape, and light does not pass through it.

The lining is the part that is applied to the face. That is why, to create it, they use the most pleasant material for the body - flannel or fleece. This fabric does not cause irritation.

The basics of sewing a nightgown

Before starting any sewing, you need to make a pattern. Our case is no exception. The main task of the night accessory is to make our rest comfortable. Therefore, the pattern of the sleep mask must correspond to the anatomical features of the face.

The standard size of the mask is 190 x 95 mm. It has an oval shape with a recess for the nose. This is the most common type of mask. There are also those that consist, for example, of two triangles.

An example of a pattern you can print or draw yourself using the photo above. It is better to make it immediately on thick paper, so that it is more convenient to work with it.

Sleep master class) consists of the following:

  1. Prepare a paper pattern, tools, and necessary materials (such as silk, non-woven, and flannel).
  2. Attach the pattern to the flannel, pin it with pins and trace it around the outline. Cut out one piece.
  3. Make two more of the same details from silk and non-woven fabric.
  4. Now fold the mask: flannel face down, non-woven, silk face up. Connect the layers with pins.
  5. Cut off a piece of elastic. It should not be very long so that the blindfold for sleeping does not fall off, and not short so that nothing will crush.
  6. Cut out a rectangle from the same material as the top of the mask. In length, it should be equal to the size of the elastic, and in width it should be two to three times larger.
  7. Sew the rectangle lengthwise, leaving the edges unstoped.
  8. Then sew two parallel stitches in the middle so that the strip divides into three sections in length. Moreover, an elastic band should fit into the middle one.
  9. Insert the elastic into the prepared part and secure the ends with pins.
  10. Attach the elastic around the edges to the mask. You need to paste between the top and middle layers.
  11. Sew all the details together, leaving a small hole through which you can turn the mask out.
  12. Scribble along the unsewn edges. To do this, use scissors to make frequent small cuts. This is necessary so that the fabric is evenly distributed, and not collected in an accordion.
  13. Turn the product out.

How to decorate your sleep bandage?

A do-it-yourself dream mask is an accessory that can also be beautifully decorated:

  • make an applique from fleece (it can be eyes, an animal's face, glasses, and so on);
  • decorate along the edge with lace;
  • glue sequins or rhinestones;
  • make embroidery and much more.

Unusual sleep mask

A do-it-yourself dream mask will turn out to be completely unusual if you give it an interesting shape. For example, a headband in the form of a cat's face will look simple and original.

To do this, add triangular ears to the usual pattern. Then cut out all three pieces and sew the mask as described above. You can decorate it with antennae, eyes and a fleece nose.

Similarly, you can make a mask in the form of a panda's face or other animal. For more realism, choose a material that matches the color, and also do not forget about the features. For example, a panda has black circles around its eyes, so they also need to be recreated on the mask.

Healthy sleep is an important component of the life cycle of every person. Only after a normal, sound sleep does a person feel rested and full of energy. And those who cannot fully rest at night feel tired, uncoordinated, become irritable, and lose their ability to work the whole next day.

There are many effective ways and techniques to help fight insomnia. One of them is the use of an original handmade sleep mask.

It is an opaque blindfold shaped like glasses. The mask is made in such a way that it gives the feeling of darkness even during daylight hours. This property is especially valuable for those who have to work at night and sleep during the day.

In addition, those who are lightly asleep or suffer from insomnia due to external stimuli (bright, flashing advertisements, car headlights, lights shining in the window) will appreciate all the benefits of using the mask.

Some scientists are of the opinion that resting in complete darkness has a positive effect on the state of the immune and nervous system. Therefore, the mask will be useful even for people who do not experience sleep problems.

Types of dream masks

Sleep masks are very different, they differ in models, colors, fabric from which they are made.

You can sew a cloth bandage yourself. Both synthetic and natural fabrics are suitable for this, but the most popular are natural silk masks.

Cotton seed filler is no less popular.

A sleep mask is a great gift for those who travel a lot and do not always have comfortable conditions for rest.

Step-by-step master class - DIY dream mask

To make a sleep mask, you will need the following materials:

  • Main fabric (satin, silk, etc.);
  • Polycotton (cotton thermally welded with padding polyester);
  • Calico;
  • Elastic band (1 cm wide, 29 cm long);
  • Threads in the color of the main material and calico;
  • Satin bias tape in the color of the base material.

You will also need: a sewing machine, scissors, chalk, a ruler, a pin, a needle for hand sewing, pins, an iron. The mask is filled with dried lavender flowers. They will take about 5g.

You can draw a pattern for a sleep mask yourself or use a ready-made one by printing it on a printer.

A feature of the sleep mask under consideration is that on the reverse side it has a cut into which a sachet with dried flowers is inserted. When the mask needs to be washed, it can be pulled out and then reinserted.

The main fabric and coarse calico should be ironed with steam before cutting.

The cutting details of the mask are as follows:

  • - Front part (atlas, 1 det.);
  • - Inner layer (polycotton, 1 piece, cut out later);
  • - Back (atlas, 2 parts - right and left);
  • - Drawstring under an elastic band (atlas, 1 piece);
  • - Sasha (coarse calico, 1 child, cut out later).

First you need to prepare the front of the mask. Using tailor's chalk and a ruler, mark the stitch lines on it.

Then the part of the mask must be applied to the polycotton (wrong side - to the wrong side) and pinned in several places with pins.

After that, the mask must be quilted on a typewriter, and the pins must be removed.

Excess polycotton must be cut along the contour of the mask. The prepared part must be folded in half, checked for symmetry and, if necessary, equipped.

Then you need to tuck the cut allowances inward by half the width and fix with a machine stitch. The seams can be ironed on if necessary.

The front and back of the mask must be folded together from the wrong side to the wrong side and swept around the perimeter with neat hand stitches at a distance of 2 mm from the cuts.

The drawstring under the elastic must be sewn along the length at a distance of 7 mm from the cuts. In this case, the front side of the part must be inside.

After that, the drawstring must be turned to the front side with a pin and ironed.

Using the same pin, insert the elastic into the drawstring. The ends of the drawstring, together with the elastic, must be secured with several hand stitches. The prepared part must be swept from the wrong side of the mask.

Then the binding should be wrapped on the seamy side of the mask, basted with hand stitches, and then stitched.

If necessary, the edging can be gently ironed along the edge with the tip of the iron.

From coarse calico you need to cut out a sachet bag, sew it along the long and short sides, turn it out on the front side, iron it, fill it with dried flowers and sew it up.

The finished bag must be inserted into the mask.

Sewing process

The standard size of such an accessory is 19 x9.5 cm.In order to sew it yourself, you will need the following materials:

  • Main material.
  • Non-woven
  • Fabric for the inner layer. It is best to choose soft fabrics such as flannel or fleece.
  • Elastic band for attaching the product to the head.
  • Ribbons, lace and other materials for decoration.
  • Pattern.

When all the materials are prepared, you can start making the product. To do this, on paper folded in half, draw patterns for the future accessory. As a result, you will get patterns, the axis of which will run along the bridge of the nose.

Copy the patterns to the material of your choice. Cut out all the elements without leaving seam allowances. Then you need to cut out the same piece from the non-woven fabric.

At the next stage, you should arrange the patterns as follows: blank for the inside of the mask face down, non-woven blank, blank for the outside of the product face up. Secure all layers with pins or overcast with thread.

For the elastic, cut a 55x14 cm rectangle out of the material. Sew along the long side, twist and iron, placing the seam in the middle of the element, then stitch the drawstring to accommodate the elastic, and insert it.

Now you can collect the mask. The finished elastic should be inserted into the edges of the mask and stitched along the marked line, leaving a small hole on top to turn the finished product.

The finished accessory can be decorated as you like. You can decorate it with lace pre-assembled on a sewing machine. It will be enough to sew such a lace ribbon along the edge of the product to give it a unique tenderness and romance. In addition, you can use all kinds of beads, beads, appliques, ribbons and much more for decoration.

Knitted mask

The sleeping band can not only be sewn, but also knitted, which will make it even more original and comfortable.

According to the scheme, crochet the part of the product with a hook No. 3.5. From the top side, tie it with single crochet columns with contrasting threads. Carefully hide the remaining ends of the threads in the canvas. Then cut the decorative elastic to the desired length and sew it to the knitted element of the product. Be careful not to twist the elastic. As a decoration, you can embroider funny eyes on the front side.
