That famous appearance of the Mother of God, described in the diary, was called by believers all over the world the "Miracle of Fatima". It was written in the hand of Nun Lucia de Jesus dos Santos, the last surviving witness of the miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary.
At the beginning of the last century, in 1917, near the town of Fatima in Portugal, the Mother of God herself appeared to three children grazing cattle - the boy Francisco and the girls Jacinte and Lucia - and told about the future of the world. This episode of the prediction was partially fulfilled on May 25, 1984, when John Paul II performed in Rome a prayer for the salvation of Russia, dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary, in front of the statue of the Madonna of Fatima. The "Epistle of Fatima", as this diary is called, was sent to the Vatican immediately after the nun described the appearance of the Virgin in it. Having received the document, the hierarchs of the Catholic Church immediately classified it. And only in 1981, after the attempt on the life of the Pope, which was predicted in the diary, the "Message" was remembered and removed from under the pile of dusty volumes in the archive. History of the Third Mystery
On July 13, 1917, during Her third appearance in Fatima to the young seers, Lucia, Francisco and Jacinte, the Most Holy Virgin revealed to them three Secrets, or a Secret, consisting of three parts, which should not have been told until a certain time.
The First Mystery is a vision of hell that the Virgin Mary gave the children to see, and which, although it lasted only a moment, was very realistic and frightening.
The second part of the Mystery speaks about the establishment of veneration for the Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary and the need to dedicate Russia to Him, as well as the punishment that humanity expects if it does not fulfill the requirements of the Mother of God.
In 1941, on behalf of the Bishop of Leria da Silva, Sister Lucia described the apparitions of the Virgin in her Third Memoirs (which she completed on August 31, 1941), telling, in particular, about the First and Second Mysteries of the Epistle. At the same time, she made it clear that she does not yet have the right to reveal the Third Secret:
And now I will begin my new assignment and thereby fulfill the command of Your Eminence and the desire of Dr. Galamba. I will tell you everything, except for one part of the secret, which I am currently forbidden to reveal.
On December 8, 1941, Sister Lucia finished her Fourth Memories, in which she also repeated the description of the First and Second Mysteries, adding to it the phrase: "In Portugal the dogma of faith will always be preserved; etc. ...", which can be attributed to the beginning of the Third Mystery ...
In June 1943, Sister Lucia, then 36 years old, fell ill with pleurisy. At first, her condition did not cause fear, but later the disease worsened and took on a threatening character. The seer wrote to Bishop da Silva: "Perhaps all this is the beginning of the end, and I am happy. It is good that when my mission on earth is completed, the good Lord prepares the way for me to Heaven." This aroused fears among the bishop and the canon of Galamba da Oliveira, who was always concerned that the message of the Most Holy Theotokos would become known in its entirety. Nevertheless, Bishop da Silva did not dare to take responsibility, obliging Sister Lucia to disclose the content of the Third Secret under obedience, so in September he invited her to write it down "if she wishes it and thinks it is good", promising that the written will be announced shortly.
This proposal caused Sister Lucia serious inner feelings, and in the end she decided not to write the Third Mystery, unless the church authorities directly demand it from her in the name of God and by virtue of holy obedience. “Even if this [message] is sealed, [to write] still means to open,” she wrote.
Finally, in mid-October, Bishop da Silva makes a decision and formally orders Sister Lucia to write down everything that the Blessed Virgin revealed to her.
"They told me to either write it in notebooks, in which I was told to keep my spiritual diary, or, if I wish, write it on a piece of paper, put it in an envelope, close it and seal it."
Nevertheless, despite the fact that Sister Lucia always believed that obedience to the abbots meant obedience to God, for a long time she was unable to fulfill this command. According to her own words, several times she tried to fulfill what she was told, sat down to write, but could not do it, because as soon as she took up a pen to write down the Secret, her hands began to tremble and she could not write a word ... Moreover, if at the same moment she tried to write something not related to the Secret, she did not experience any difficulties. In a letter to her confessor Don Lino Garcia dated December 23, 1943, she wrote that, in her opinion, "this phenomenon was not caused by natural causes."
However, on January 3, 1944, Sister Lucia still writes down the contents of the Third Secret. According to the testimony of Canon Martins Reisch, this was preceded by the appearance of the Virgin Mary to Sister Lucia in the infirmary in Tuja, which took place on January 2, 1944. During this appearance, the Mother of God allowed her to write down the Third Secret, in accordance with what she was told. For several months, Sister Lucia was unable to transmit the third part of the Mystery she had written down to Bishop da Silva. Finally, on June 17, 1944, on behalf of Bishop da Silva, the titular Archbishop of Gurza, Mons. Manuel Maria Ferreira da Silva, accompanied by his brother and Fr. Vernokki, and on the same day Sister Lucia arrived there from Tui, accompanied by one of the nuns. Neither this nun nor the archbishop's companions knew about the purpose of the meeting. The meeting took place in the almshouse of Azilu Fonseca, where Sister Lucia handed over to the archbishop a notebook with a sealed envelope enclosed in it, which contained sheets of the written Third Secret of Fatima. On the same evening, the Archbishop handed the envelope to Bishop da Silva, who subsequently took it to his episcopal palace in Leiria, where it was kept until 1957. Although already in 1944 Bishop da Silva intended to transfer the recording of the Third Mystery to Rome, the Vatican considered it more appropriate for the document to be kept in the episcopal curia in Leiria. In 1957, an envelope containing Sister Lucia's notes, enclosed in another envelope and sealed with a double seal, was handed over to the Apostolic Nuncio in Lisbon to Archbishop Fernando Cento. On April 4 of the same year, he was brought to the Vatican and deposited in the Secret Archives of the Sacred Chancellery.
On August 17, 1959, the envelope with the Third Secret was brought from the archives to Pope John XXIII, who hesitated and decided to return it back and not make its contents public.
Pope John Paul II, on 18 July 1981, wished to know the third part of the mystery after the attempt on his life on 13 May 1981. His Eminence Cardinal Franjo Seper, Prefect of the Congregation, presented the Deputy Secretary of State, Monignor Eduardo Martinez Somalo, two envelopes: white, with handwritten text the sisters of Lucia in Portuguese, and orange, with the translation of the Mystery into Italian. On 11 August, Monsignor Somalo returned both envelopes to the archive.
On May 13, 2000, Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano, at the end of the Mass of Beatification of Francisco and Jacinta Martou performed in Fatima by John Paul II, announced that “in order to enable believers to better understand the message of the Virgin Mary of Fatima, with an appropriate comment. Nuclear weapons will be used in it. Millions will die, and the survivors will envy the dead. But if people leave their aggressive intentions. and reconcile with each other and with God, war can be avoided. In addition, the Third Secret predicts the crisis of the Catholic Church and the special fate of Russia. I cannot tell you more. "
So, the third part of the Fatima revelation dealt with the war, the crisis of the church, and, most importantly, a special prophecy about Russia was given. Moreover, this most important message, connected (as is known from a number of events, for example, from the actions of Pope John Paul II, "Dedication of Russia to the Mother of God", etc.) with the Personality of the Mother of God herself, who gave such a prediction, has a direct connection with fate humanity.
An important key to understanding the third part of the prophecy is the date named by Lucia. Because, before the promise was made, the secret could not be revealed.

The Mother of God gave Lucia numerous epistles published all over the world (in our country then, for obvious reasons, it was not possible to do this, but now the Church has officially recognized the authenticity of the epistles).
On October 13, 1917, the Mother of God once again appeared to the three shepherdesses. On that day, She gave Lucia the following message, which was and is of the greatest importance for the future of the entire human race. Moreover, it was supposed to explain the "solar miracle". This message consisted of three parts.
The message was brought to the Vatican, but the Catholic Church decided to hide a third part of it. The Pope intended to publicize it in 1960, but this was not done.
However, on October 15, 1963, the German newspaper "Neus Europa" announced a leaked information, as a result of which it became known that the text of the message (probably again an abbreviated part) had been sent by the Vatican authorities to the governments of the USA, the Soviet Union and Great Britain.
