To ensure the freedom of movement of a person in a wheelchair, all public buildings should now be designed with special ramps or devices for lifting a disabled person up stairs - stair lifts.
SNiP 35-01-2001 contains recommendations for designing an environment accessible to persons with disabilities. These requirements are mandatory for designed and constructed public buildings. But what about the old, already built and not equipped? Some structures, for example, architectural monuments, cannot be reconstructed in accordance with the requirements of SNiP 35-01-2001.

Alternative to ramps

A bit of physics

Let someone stand on one leg, and we will all see. Let's take a close look at this very leg. See how joints and muscles work? Everything in order to keep the body from falling. And so with every step. Walking forward, we, in fact, fall forward, but have time to substitute our foot to prevent the fall. And with this, there are big problems with crutches. If only because there are no joints and muscles in the crutch itself, it reacts only to the movement of the hand, and this is far from always easy.
We fall both when we go up the stairs and when we go down it. The difference is that when climbing, firstly, we are insured, usually by intercepting the railing a little higher than ourselves, and, secondly, there is nowhere especially to fall. Not scary. But down is scary. And because of this, additional tension is created in the muscles, which already work at the limit of strength. Therefore, going down is always more difficult.
So, what is it worth and what not to do if you find yourself on the same staircase with a person on crutches? I'll start with what to do
Do not
- Do not try to grab a person by the arm, take away crutches or a stick without explicit permission or request. Even if it seems to you that he is about to fall. If it really falls, grab the collar, substitute your shoulder, grab the waist. But not by hands or crutches. Remember that these are the legs at the moment. You will not try to grab someone by the legs so that he does not fall?
- You should not follow a person with a crutch if you can overtake him. Such people are usually quite worried about the real and perceived inconvenience they cause to others. And if you slowly (how else?) Follow him up the stairs, then a real "traffic jam" will arise, the person will get nervous and it will only be more difficult for him.
- There is no need to block the railings and the path to the railings. Of course, you can go up or down without railings, but with them it is much safer. Railings in our unpredictable world are on the right, and on the left, and in the middle. Be patient even if he walks upstream of the railing. It is possible that he cannot do otherwise.
- When overtaking a person with a crutch, it is not necessary to try to slip between him and the column encountered on the way, for example. This is very important for the metro at some crossings. Here's the point. Most people who are difficult to walk very quickly develop the habit of discrete movement. Everyone remembers this term? Intermittent, yes. The route is laid out in pieces: from a fence to the edge of the sidewalk, from a crooked tree to a large puddle, from "square tiles" to a signboard, and so on. Reaching each intermediate finish is not only a mentally ticked box along the route, but also a short rest. Two or three breaths often. - Do not immediately rush to offer your help. Look at the behavior of the person with the crutch. - We must calmly walk forward, at our usual pace, overtaking the person on crutches on the side opposite from the railing. Usually - on the left, but, as I said, there are all sorts of cases. If you don't have the time or desire, it's not worth it. - If you do decide that you need help, then you need to offer it as specific and direct as possible. There is no need to ask "maybe I can, say, help with something, for example?" But in American English, it’s just an established construction, not taken literally by anyone. And in Russian there is no such form. And the best thing to ask is exactly what you can do. Bags, carry, for example. The most common and usually enough.
And finally, I will say about one more important thing. To which, in theory, it is generally necessary to devote a separate hour, or even several, but it is impossible not to mention it at all. It's about aggression.
Aggression of disabled people
It may well happen that your sincere impulse stumbles upon an inadequate answer. Simply put, they will bark at you, or, in a softer version, they will squeeze the bag to themselves, meeting with a patter "no, no, nothing is needed, everything is in order!" And they will look like a potential robber.
Well what can I say! A hard life in itself gives more reasons for aggression. And the disabled person can "break loose" at any moment. “The pension is small, the prices are high, the steps are short, the steps are high, and then there is some unknown girl with pink hair, a thief for sure! - how much can you! All on me! "
There is only one thing to advise in such a situation - to smile and walk away. Don't take it personally. You are definitely not to blame for anything.

But independent movement is impossible, because the equipment should not be operated by a disabled person, but by an individual person. This property is the main disadvantage of such lifts, and of course the price itself. Otherwise, they are flawless - comfortable, safe and versatile. 
Step walkers
Stair climbers differ from crawler lifts by the way they move up the stairs. Instead of tracks, they use two pairs of wheels located at different heights, which allows you to take two steps at once and keep your balance.
It is a little more difficult to control the stair climber, the speed of descent and ascent is lower, but the difference is not so significant. 
Equipment for getting out of bed
Getting out of bed or a sofa for a healthy person is not difficult and takes just a couple of seconds. But for people with a weakened body and leg problems, it is very difficult.
