How to lower a wheelchair up stairs. Handicapped stair climbers - an overview of the different types. Ways to solve the problem

It has the ability to move on steps called "step walker" "Gradi-standard". This wheelchair, an invention of Russian engineers, was first presented in Sokolniki in 2010 at the International Medical Forum.

Description

The wheelchair "step walker" ("Gradi-standard") has the ability to overcome various barriers on the way. Also its distinctive ability, the wheelchair "step walker" can go up and down the steps. Movement on the steps is carried out by a special mechanism. But due to the installation of this mechanism, the stroller lost some operational capabilities, for example, an increase in weight, an increase in the dimensions of a stroller, etc. These disadvantages pale against the background of the main advantage of the "step walk" stroller, walking up the stairs.

Wheelchair "step-walker" called "Gradi-standard"

There are no competitive wheelchair analogues in the world. The revolutionary decision of Russian scientists led to the creation of an exclusive wheelchair.

Technical characteristics of a wheelchair called "Gradi-standard": wheelchair length 1050 mm, length with a step-walk mechanism 1260 mm, wheelchair width 620 mm, wheelchair height 910 mm, seat depth 410 mm, seat width 400 mm, wheelchair weight 25 kg , the maximum load on the stroller is 110 kg.

Recently we were contacted by the developer of a step walker wheelchair. The stroller did not go into mass production due to lack of funding, as the developer said. But you can order a staircase for disabled people without any problems. The stroller has been significant, refined since 2013. There is also an electric version of such a stroller on sale.

Price and cost

Everyone knows that there are disabled people. The fact that they have some kind of problems has also been heard by the edge of an ear. A well-fed is not a friend to a hungry person, and only those who are chained to them, or who have loved ones with disabilities, can understand how a person in a wheelchair really lives. In 2012, Russia ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

According to the principles formulated in the UN document, the states participating in the Convention must implement the required measures to create equal healthy members of society for disabled people, access to all facilities and services provided by the state to the population.

There are problems. And what about the solutions?

The Declaration of the UN Convention on the Protection and Ensuring of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is, of course, not the only document that the state uses in its social activities. At least some of the difficulties that people with problems with the musculoskeletal system have to face every day have quite acceptable solutions. To ensure the freedom of movement of a person in a wheelchair, all public buildings should now be designed with special ramps or devices for lifting a disabled person up stairs - stair lifts.

SNiP 35-01-2001 contains recommendations for designing an environment accessible to persons with disabilities. These requirements are mandatory for designed and constructed public buildings. But what about the old, already built and not equipped? Some structures, for example, architectural monuments, cannot be reconstructed in accordance with the requirements of SNiP 35-01-2001.

Crawler lift IDEAL X1 has a lower cost compared to analogues Roby T09, LG-2004, Sherpa 902.

Has unique advantages over similar devices:

  • Folding feet for reduced storage / transport
  • Removable headrest for strollers with its own headrest
  • Infinitely variable speed control (there are no analogues)
  • Smooth acceleration and deceleration without jerking (there are no analogues)
  • Emergency movement button on the panel (does not require additional connecting cable)
  • The presence of a battery indicator on the steering wheel
  • Convenient steering wheel latch (for analogs it is very difficult to snap it off)
  • Less vibration during movement due to the toothed pressure roller
  • Optimally designed frame design and requires less metal
  • Electric battery type - LITHIUM-ION (Li - ion) - (optional, increased operating time of the tracked step walker, without recharging) (there are no analogues)

Alternative to ramps

In such cases, the solution to the problem will be a staircase lift for a disabled person - a device designed to lift a disabled person in a wheelchair up a staircase.

  1. Vertical lift. Vertical lifts are available without a shaft fence, designed to lift no higher than two meters, and with a shaft fence, lifting to a height of up to 12.5 meters.
  2. Inclined stair lift for disabled people. Such lifts can be installed in buildings with wide stairs with the ability to turn around for the mechanism on the landing. The device is a platform that moves parallel to the slope of the stairs along the guides mounted on the stair rail. Depending on the model, the ascent is possible only for one march (inclined lifts INVAPROM A300, Vimec V64) or along a complex path, repeating the spatial trajectory of the stairs - models INVAPROM A310, Vimec V65.

To install lifts of this type, no complex reconstruction of the building is required, it is enough to fix the guides of the platform movement.

  1. Mobile caterpillar wheelchair stair lifts. Mobile lifting devices for wheelchairs further expand the possibilities of the low-mobility category of the population. The devices allow a wheelchair user to climb stairs almost anywhere: on narrow stairs in private houses, in buildings not equipped with ramps and stationary lifts, on city street and landscape stairs.

There is a fairly significant range of devices designed to expand the capabilities of a person in a wheelchair. According to the type of movement, they are divided into caterpillar lifts and stair climbers.

The tracked units are a tracked platform that allows the wheelchair to move safely up and down. The device of the hoist track does not damage the step coverings.

  • The T09 Roby has an electronically controlled actuator for increased reliability. Regardless of the load on the lift, the platform moves at a constant speed, without jerks and jerks. The wheelchair locks are universal and fit most types of wheelchairs.
  • Omega-Starmax is a crawler ladder hoist equipped with a self-braking crawler drive with electromagnetic brakes. It is offered in various modifications: for passive disabled people moving with accompanying persons and for active disabled people, with the possibility of independent, without assistance, attachment to the wheelchair and movement, including on flat areas. Simple and reliable control makes it easy to use the device by people with serious enough illnesses.

Omega-Starmax can be used not only indoors, the model is excellent for overcoming uneven terrain, while maintaining stability and mobility on snow cover.

  • Mobile stair lift SHERPA N 903 made in Italy. It moves on a caterpillar mechanism driven by an electric drive with convenient electronic control located in the handle.
  • Electric staircase lift Puma UNI-130 - staircase walker. Allows to overcome steps up to 200 mm high. To use, the help of an accompanying person is required.

  1. Chair lifts. These devices are similar to inclined lifts, except that they are designed for a person without a wheelchair to climb stairs. The most appropriate use in private houses. Different models can be used both on straight flights and on stairs of complex configuration, with rounded flights.

Outcomes

You can get an idea of how devices for lifting wheelchairs up stairs work by watching photos and videos, as well as reading reviews.

The use of lifts, both mobile and stationary, allows people with low mobility not to feel cut off from the rest of society, taking an active part in public life, doing art or work.

An accessible environment is not a result, but a process. It is impossible to do this and that, replace all the stairs with elevators, for example, and proudly declare that everything is available, the environment is ready.

For a man on crutches, the most common staircase is a challenge, a rampart, Everest.

The staircase itself is a very, very inaccessible environment. For "wheelchair users" - a little more than completely, and for a person with a stick - a little easier. But it is still dangerous and difficult, this environment, not accessible.

It is possible and highly desirable to follow a few simple rules that will greatly facilitate the life of a person who is forced to climb stairs with a crutch. They will greatly facilitate his life, but following these rules will not even force you to leave the "comfort zone".

And this is correct, because we do not need to sacrifice ourselves for each other, but to live together. And it is desirable to live well.

A bit of physics

What do you think is more difficult for a person on crutches to climb or descend a ladder? The correct answer is to go down. Why is that? Let's figure it out.

Let someone stand on one leg, and we will all see. Let's take a close look at this very leg. See how joints and muscles work? Everything in order to keep the body from falling. And so with every step. Walking forward, we, in fact, fall forward, but have time to substitute our foot to prevent the fall. And with this, there are big problems with crutches. If only because there are no joints and muscles in the crutch itself, it reacts only to the movement of the hand, and this is far from always easy.

We fall both when we go up the stairs and when we go down it. The difference is that when climbing, firstly, we are insured, usually by intercepting the railing a little higher than ourselves, and, secondly, there is nowhere especially to fall. Not scary. But down is scary. And because of this, additional tension is created in the muscles, which already work at the limit of strength. Therefore, going down is always more difficult.

So, what is it worth and what not to do if you find yourself on the same staircase with a person on crutches? I'll start with what to do

Do not

      1. Do not try to grab a person by the arm, take away crutches or a stick without explicit permission or request. Even if it seems to you that he is about to fall. If it really falls, grab the collar, substitute your shoulder, grab the waist. But not by hands or crutches. Remember that these are the legs at the moment. You will not try to grab someone by the legs so that he does not fall?

    1. You should not follow a person with a crutch if you can overtake him. Such people are usually quite worried about the real and perceived inconvenience they cause to others. And if you slowly (how else?) Follow him up the stairs, then a real "traffic jam" will arise, the person will get nervous and it will only be more difficult for him.

    1. There is no need to block the railings and the path to the railings. Of course, you can go up or down without railings, but with them it is much safer. Railings in our unpredictable world are on the right, and on the left, and in the middle. Be patient even if he walks upstream of the railing. It is possible that he cannot do otherwise.
    2. When overtaking a person with a crutch, it is not necessary to try to slip between him and the column encountered on the way, for example. This is very important for the metro at some crossings. Here's the point. Most people who are difficult to walk very quickly develop the habit of discrete movement. Everyone remembers this term? Intermittent, yes. The route is laid out in pieces: from a fence to the edge of the sidewalk, from a crooked tree to a large puddle, from "square tiles" to a signboard, and so on. Reaching each intermediate finish is not only a mentally ticked box along the route, but also a short rest. Two or three breaths often. And the oncoming column on the stairs is also a destination, also a finish. To get to him! And here you, fast and sharp, "cut" on the go.

  1. Do not immediately rush to offer your help. Look at the behavior of the person with the crutch. If he does not fuss, does not look confusedly from the stairs to his bags, calmly confidently walks forward - it means that he knows what he is doing. Even if it looks odd, this is how I put the crutch in my free hand and don't even use it. There are reasons for this. And it may be that the disabled person, all proud of himself, that he coped himself, and here you once again reminded of his difficulties. Lowered from heaven to earth.

What do you need

    1. We must calmly walk forward, at our usual pace, overtaking the person on crutches on the side opposite from the railing. Usually - on the left, but, as I said, there are all sorts of cases. Don't fuss or jerk “can it help? maybe not? or is it necessary? " It is already difficult for him to monitor the traffic situation, and your nervous behavior can be harmful. If you don't have the time or desire, it's not worth it. Once, two girls really wanted to help me when leaving the metro, but they were in such a hurry to get to the train and were so nervous that they dropped my bag, and trying to stop it (the stairs!), I almost collapsed myself. Such help will not bring any good to anyone, honestly.

  1. If you do decide that you need help, then you need to offer it as specific and direct as possible. There is no need to ask "maybe I can, say, help with something, for example?" It's very polite, but pretty pointless. Kind of like the immortal Hollywood "are you okay?" - "Of course, okay, only guts on the tree!"

But in American English, it’s just an established construction, not taken literally by anyone. And in Russian there is no such form. And the best thing to ask is exactly what you can do. Bags, carry, for example. The most common and usually enough.

And finally, I will say about one more important thing. To which, in theory, it is generally necessary to devote a separate hour, or even several, but it is impossible not to mention it at all. It's about aggression.

Aggression of disabled people

It may well happen that your sincere impulse stumbles upon an inadequate answer. Simply put, they will bark at you, or, in a softer version, they will squeeze the bag to themselves, meeting with a patter "no, no, nothing is needed, everything is in order!" And they will look like a potential robber.

Well what can I say! A hard life in itself gives more reasons for aggression. And the disabled person can "break loose" at any moment. “The pension is small, the prices are high, the steps are short, the steps are high, and then there is some unknown girl with pink hair, a thief for sure! - how much can you! All on me! "

There is only one thing to advise in such a situation - to smile and walk away. Don't take it personally. You are definitely not to blame for anything.

Well, completing this whole staircase theme, I want to wish you easy paths, strong railings and an accessible environment in any business.

Drawings by Irina Sechina

A positive trend of our time is a radical change in attitudes towards people with disabilities, not only on the part of the state, but also on the part of society and commercial structures, which is no less important. Just 40-45 years ago, the life of disabled people was indifferent to everyone. Few people were interested in the existence of a person with disabilities, as well as his problems. Now, in almost all countries, programs are being implemented to adapt the environment for people with limited mobility. Ordinary people also began to treat disabled people better, realizing that no one is immune from health problems, bad heredity and accidents.

Engineers also do not stand aside, constantly inventing something new and improving the old. Particular attention among their works is worth, which will be discussed below. We will consider solutions already available for purchase, including in Russia.
We hope they will be of interest to you, and perhaps even encourage you to buy something for loved ones who need help.

Power wheelchairs have been around for a long time, but they are not bought very often for a variety of reasons. One is the lack of versatility. For people who have problems only with their legs, they are not entirely suitable, because you still need to strain the muscles to maintain health. And the battery that sat down somewhere far from home is perplexing, since there is no manual drive. Moving around the house on an electric wheelchair is also not an option.

The attachments were designed specifically to solve many of these problems. They attach to a manual wheelchair, turning it into an electric one for a while. Once the trip is complete, the attachment can be easily removed. Well, in the event of a breakdown or a dead battery, you can always, though with difficulty, still get to the house using a manual drive.

It is so convenient and practical that there is no doubt about the wide distribution of the invention. It will cost to turn the sidecar into a three-wheeled motorcycle from 60,000 rubles. The "transformer" will accelerate up to 28 km / h and travel up to 35 km on a single charge(exact figures depend on the selected model).

Stair climbing solutions

Inquisitor Sand dan Glokta, the protagonist of Joe Abercrombie's popular novel "The First Law" in the United States, hated stairs more than anything else, as he could not walk on them because of his sore leg. The events of the novel take place in the Middle Ages. We live in the 21st century, but stairs are still the main enemy of people with leg problems. Climbing steps in a wheelchair is not only difficult for them, but also very dangerous.

Special equipment, in particular various lifts, can help to simplify the process and minimize the risk of falling. Unfortunately, they are not all united by the most humane cost. Otherwise, they are very different, let's try to figure out what exactly.

Platform lifts

This type of lifts is practically a horizontal lift. A platform with a motor is attached to the railing of the stairs or special guides, which moves parallel to them for one or several spans. At the beginning and end of the movement there are call buttons.

In terms of the practicality of the platform, the lifts show their best side, since the disabled person can use them independently without assistance. Plus they are safe and effortless to drive. The disadvantages are lack of mobility and huge cost. Therefore, this option is more suitable for organizations and state rehabilitation programs than for individuals.

Crawler lifts

They are a small base with tracks and small wheels. A wheelchair with a person is rolled up to the base, after which the lift is used to overcome stairs, individual steps and some other obstacles.

Crawler lifts can easily cope with almost all types of stairs, regardless of the height of the steps and their material. But independent movement is impossible, because the equipment should not be operated by a disabled person, but by an individual person. This property is the main disadvantage of such lifts, and of course the price itself. Otherwise, they are flawless - comfortable, safe and versatile.

Step walkers

Stair climbers differ from crawler lifts by the way they move up the stairs. Instead of tracks, they use two pairs of wheels located at different heights, which allows you to take two steps at once and keep your balance.

It is a little more difficult to control the stair climber, the speed of descent and ascent is lower, but the difference is not so significant.

Equipment for getting out of bed

Getting out of bed or a sofa for a healthy person is not difficult and takes just a couple of seconds. But for people with a weakened body and leg problems, it is very difficult. Many people cannot even change to a wheelchair on their own, then they need help. And it's good if there are several guardians who will help you do everything according to the recommendations of the doctors. And if there is only one guardian, and even without the necessary physical strength?

Several types of equipment can save, we will consider each of them separately.

Vertical lifts

It is something like a crane, but much smaller in size. Instead of a hook, special devices are provided that allow you to accurately hook a person. The transfer is carried out using an electric motor. You don't need to make any efforts to control the vertical lift - even a child can handle it

Lifts-vericalizers

Improved version of vertical lifts. It allows the disabled person to lift himself up and transfer himself into a wheelchair, or to move while standing (the body adheres to the structural elements).

Verticalizers are much more practical, as they can be used in the absence of a guardian. They are very useful when you need to gradually get used to the standing position to speed up the healing process, but they will cost almost twice as much.

Descent and ascent of wheelchairs up the stairs - tips and solutions.

How to lower the stroller up the stairs? - this question is asked by young parents living in apartment buildings and actively traveling around the city with their child, since not all stairs are equipped with comfortable ramps - ramps for wheelchairs.

This primarily concerns residential buildings:

  • Staircase from the elevator to the driveway
  • Staircase from apartment to elevator
  • Stairwells to the driveway in houses without an elevator
  • Driveway staircase

socially significant objects(shops, pharmacies, banks, etc.)

As you can see, there are many stairs on the way, and only a few of them are equipped with ramps - how to get around them in a wheelchair?

Walking stroller - convenience or dead end?

In everyday life, mothers have a name - "walking stroller" - this is a stroller, the structure of the wheelbase of which allows you to lower it down the steps with minimal effort.

Step by step is overcome slowly and carefully. However, the concept of "minimum effort" is relatively relative to say the least - try to drag or lower a baby stroller weighing 13-20 kg up the stairs! Therefore, daily "walking" on the stairs is fraught with discomfort for the baby, who shakes in the stroller when going up or down the stairs, and problems with the back of the mother, who lifts weights.

Device for lowering / lifting the wheelchair up the stairs at the entrance.

For the descent and ascent of wheelchairs on the stairs, LLC Ramps.su has developed folding ramp model- it can be installed on any staircase, even a narrow staircase, the ramp is conveniently folded and unfolded, the weight for a standard march is about 5 kg. This device for lowering and lifting baby carriages is a huge help for moms.

How to lower and raise a stroller up the stairs video

In the Russian Federation, legislative acts have been adopted that protect the interests of parents with children using strollers in terms of free and comfortable movement, the availability of housing and socially significant facilities. You can install a folding ramp in your entrance at the expense of the management company. You have the necessary tools in your hands, it is important to use them correctly, and then the issue of lowering the wheelchair up the stairs will be resolved.
