    Ichthyol ointment is an outdoor anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, used to treat various infectious and inflammatory diseases of the skin, mucous membranes and pelvic organs. The ointment is used very widely, not only for the treatment of skin inflammatory processes, but also in gynecological, urological and proctological practices, since it is capable of being absorbed into the local bloodstream through the mucous membrane of the colon and vagina, and has an anti-inflammatory and disinfectant effect on the pelvic organs.

    Composition and release forms

    Currently, under the commercial name "Ichthyol ointment" registered in Russia, two dosage forms of the drug are produced:

    • Ointment for external use;
    • Suppositories (suppositories) for rectal administration (into the rectum).
    The ointment has a homogeneous, not thick consistency, is painted in a dark brown color and emits a specific smell of ichtammol. Available in dark glass cans of 25, 800 and 1800 g. Suppositories with ichthyol have the shape of a cylinder, pointed on one side, painted in a dark color. Available in packs of 10.

    Both ointment and suppositories contain as an active ingredient ichtammol (ichthyol) in varying concentrations. So, suppositories contain 200 mg of ichtammol each. And an ointment for medical use - 10 g of ichtammol per 100 g of ointment (or 100 mg per 1 g of ointment), which corresponds to a concentration of 10%.

    In addition, the pharmaceutical market also has Ichthyol ointment for veterinary use... Veterinary ointment is available in two possible concentrations of the active substance - 10% and 20%. Many people use veterinary Ichthyol ointment to treat a disease in humans, which is quite acceptable, since the drug is manufactured according to the same standards as for humans. In principle, there are no differences in the quality of veterinary and "human" Ichthyol ointment. Many people prefer to buy exactly the veterinary Ichthyol ointment, since it is produced in cans of much larger volumes (40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, 130, 140, 350, 450, 500, 550 g and 1 kg each).

    Ichthyol suppositories contain witepsol as auxiliary components, and purified medical petrolatum for veterinary and "human" use.

    Therapeutic action (from which Ichthyol ointment helps)

    Ichthyol ointment as an active ingredient contains ichtammol, which, in turn, is a sulfur-containing compound. It is due to the sulfur content that ichtammol has the following therapeutic effects:

    • Pain relieving effect;
    • Anti-inflammatory action;
    • Antiseptic action;
    • Keratoplastic action (softens and removes infiltrates, dries tissues, prevents the process of decay, which accelerates wound healing);
    • Improves microcirculation in the skin in the area of application.
    In addition, Ichthyol ointment accelerates tissue regeneration, contributing to the fastest restoration of their normal structure and functions.

    Due to the combination of antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, Ichthyol ointment is excellent for the external treatment of any infectious and inflammatory skin diseases. The fact is that the ointment simultaneously reduces the severity of the inflammatory reaction, and relieves pain, and destroys the causative agent of the infectious and inflammatory process, which leads to a quick recovery.

    When applied to open wounds, the ointment reduces the production of fluid and pus due to vasoconstriction, which promotes rapid cleaning of the wound surface and the beginning of healing.

    When applied to the skin and mucous membranes, Ichthyol ointment is able to be absorbed into the local bloodstream, from which it does not penetrate into the systemic circulation, but exerts its effect locally, only in the area of application. It is this ability of the ointment that predetermined its use in gynecology, urology and proctology. Doctors of the relevant specialties prescribe the introduction of Ichthyol ointment into the rectum, from where it is absorbed into the local bloodstream of the small pelvis, providing an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. This action is successfully used to increase the effectiveness of conventional therapy for infectious and inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs in men and women (endometritis, parametritis, prostatitis, etc.). That is, suppositories with Ichthyol ointment are used as part of the complex therapy of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs.

    Indications for use

    Ichthyol ointment is indicated for use for the treatment of the following infectious and inflammatory diseases of the skin:

    • Sycosis (chronic inflammation of the hair follicles triggered by a staphylococcal infection);
    • Streptoderma;
    • Boils and carbuncles;
    • Eczema;
    • Skin ulcers.
    In addition, Ichthyol ointment is indicated for external use in order to relieve pain and reduce the severity of inflammation as part of the complex treatment of the following diseases:

    • Prostatitis;
    • Salpingitis;
    • Endometritis.

    Instructions for use

    Ichthyol ointment - instructions for use

    The ointment is applied externally to the skin or inserted into the vagina or rectum on a tampon. It is preferable to inject the ointment into the rectum, since when it comes into contact with the mucous membrane of the vagina, it has a strong irritating effect, manifested by itching and burning. However, if a woman believes that it is better to inject the ointment into the vagina, then this can be done, since there will be no negative consequences other than irritation. But it is still recommended to stop injecting the ointment into the vagina if irritation appears, and switch to the introduction of the drug into the rectum.

    For external use for skin diseases, neuralgia and arthritis, the ointment is applied in a thin layer to the affected surface of the skin, capturing also one centimeter of healthy skin from all sides of the lesion. The ointment is simply spread evenly over the surface of the skin and does not rub in. A layer that completely covers the skin so that it does not shine through is sufficient.

    A sterile gauze napkin is applied over the ointment layer, which, if necessary, is fixed with a bandage.

    Ichthyol ointment is applied 2 to 3 times a day for 10 to 20 days. It is optimal to replace the gauze napkins with ointment every 8 to 10 hours. Before reapplying, remove the old gauze bandage and wash the affected skin area with warm water and soap. Each time, Ichthyol ointment should be applied to a previously washed, clean skin.

    The duration of therapy for the treatment of skin disease is on average 10 - 20 days, but if necessary, the course of treatment can be extended. With arthritis and neuralgia, the use of the ointment is indicated in courses lasting 10-14 days. Such courses of treatment can be periodically repeated as needed, maintaining intervals between them at least 2 to 3 weeks.

    For inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs, Ichthyol ointment can be injected into the vagina or rectum on a tampon. The tampon should be inserted into the rectum only after a bowel movement. If defecation has not occurred by the time the tampon is inserted, then an enema should be done first.

    For injecting ointment into the rectum or vagina take a ready-made hygienic tampon or make it yourself from cotton wool. To facilitate insertion, the tampon is moistened in a 10% glycerin solution so that it becomes smooth. After that, 15 g of ointment is applied to the tampon (about a teaspoon without a slide) and injected into the vagina or rectum.

    To easily insert a tampon with ointment into the vagina, it is recommended to take the following position: lie on your back, bend your knees spread apart and lift your pelvis up. In this position, the entrance to the vagina will open as much as possible, as a result of which the tampon will easily go inside, and the ointment from it will not smear on the skin of the perineum, but will go inside. For the introduction, keeping the pelvis in an elevated position, you should lean well on the shoulder blades, with one hand spread the labia to the sides, and with the other hand gently push the tampon deep into the vagina with your finger.

    It is best to insert the tampon into the rectum from the knee-elbow position. In this case, it is preliminarily recommended to lubricate the skin of the anus with a 10% glycerin solution, then strain the abdomen, as if trying to poop, and quickly push the tampon into the rectum with your finger. The tension of the abdomen with an imitation of an attempt to poop leads to some relaxation of the anal ring, as a result of which the tampon passes more easily into the rectum.

    Tampons with Ichthyol ointment are injected into the vagina or rectum 1 to 2 times a day for 10 to 14 days. If necessary, the course of treatment can be repeated, maintaining an interval of at least 2 - 3 weeks.

    Precautionary measures

    After working with the ointment, you should thoroughly wash your hands with soap and warm water.

    It is also necessary to avoid getting the ointment in the eyes and on the mucous membranes of the nose and throat. If the ointment accidentally gets into the eyes or on the mucous membranes of the mouth and nasal cavity, then rinse them well with plenty of cold running water.

    Breastfeeding women should additionally avoid getting the ointment on the nipples of the mammary glands. If this happens, then you should thoroughly wash the nipples with soap so that the child does not accidentally swallow the remnants of the ointment while sucking on the breast.

    Ichthyol suppositories (candles) - instructions for use

    Suppositories are intended for topical use - introduction into the rectum or vagina for infectious and inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs in men and women.

    It is recommended to inject suppositories into the rectum, however, women often inject the drug into the vagina, believing that this is more effective. In principle, suppositories have exactly the same effect on the pelvic organs when injected directly into the intestine and into the vagina, therefore, from the point of view of the effectiveness of treatment, there is no difference between these methods of using the drug. But when inserted into the vagina, the suppository can cause irritation, manifested by itching and burning. In such a situation, it is better to switch to rectal administration of the drug.

    Suppositories should be injected into the rectum only after a preliminary bowel movement. If defecation has not occurred at the time of the next administration of the suppository, then an enema should be given.

    Both into the rectum and into the vagina, the suppository with Ichthyol ointment should be injected deeply, pushing it along the entire length of the finger.

    Suppositories are administered 1 to 2 times a day for 10 to 14 days. If necessary, courses of therapy are repeated, maintaining intervals between them lasting at least 2 - 3 weeks.

    Influence on the ability to control mechanisms

    Ointment and suppositories do not affect the ability to control mechanisms, therefore, against the background of their use, you can engage in any activity that requires a high speed of reactions and concentration of attention, if the general condition of the person allows.

    Overdose

    Overdose was not recorded even once over the entire period of observation of the use of the drug. If you accidentally swallow the ointment, you should rinse the stomach and take a sorbent (Polysorb, Polyphepan, Enterosgel, etc.).

    Interaction with other medicinal products

    When Ichthyol ointment is applied in combination with other preparations for topical and external use containing iodine, heavy metal salts and alkaloids, chemical compounds can be formed that will have an unpredictable effect. Therefore, Ichthyol ointment should not be used simultaneously with other drugs for external and local use.

    Ichthyol ointment and suppositories are compatible with any preparations for oral administration or injection, and can be used without restrictions.

    Ichthyol ointment during pregnancy

    The official instructions indicate that the safety of using Ichthyol ointment during pregnancy has not been studied. However, this ointment was used by more than one generation of pregnant women, and gynecologists who observed their condition did not reveal any negative effect of the drug on the course of pregnancy and fetal development. Therefore, obstetricians-gynecologists, especially experienced ones, believe that Ichthyol ointment is safe for pregnant women and nursing mothers.

    For nursing mothers, there are no restrictions on the use of Ichthyol ointment. The only additional condition is to ensure that the drug does not get on the nipples of the mammary glands. If the ointment accidentally gets on the nipples of the breasts, then you should thoroughly rinse them with warm water and soap.

    Ichthyol ointment for acne

    Ichthyol ointment has a keratoplastic effect, which is as follows:

    • inflammation is stopped;
    • infiltrates in the skin soften;
    • tissues are dried by eliminating edema and reducing fluid release;
    • the processes of decay of dead tissue are prevented;
    • accelerates the healing of wounds and the formation of normal skin.
    This keratoplastic action is very effective in the treatment of acne, especially deep, the so-called "subcutaneous", which are often inflamed and do not come to the surface for a long time, from where they can be removed mechanically (squeezed out).

    Applying Ichthyol ointment pointwise to acne leads to the fact that pus very quickly collects in one pore, forming a characteristic white dot ("head") on the surface of the skin. With continued treatment of pimples with Ichthyol ointment, the thin skin above the "head" is successfully torn, pus comes out, and the wound heals very quickly and without complications.

    Ichthyol ointment very quickly leads to the localization and emergence of deep subcutaneous acne on the surface, which can exist for a very long time, periodically inflamed and causing severe pain (in addition to an aesthetic defect). Bringing such acne to the surface makes it possible to remove it.

    So, for the treatment of acne, Ichthyol ointment should be used pointwise. That is, it should be applied in a thin layer directly to the pimple and left for 1 - 2 hours. During this time, pus will collect on the surface, break through the skin and come out. After this time, the ointment must be washed off, and the wound must be disinfected with Chlorhexidine or hydrogen peroxide.

    If the pus does not come out in 2 hours, then it is recommended to apply a thin layer of ointment on the pimple in the evening, put a gauze napkin or cotton pad on top, fix it with adhesive plaster and leave the bandage overnight. In the morning, the pus will come out, and then the wound is washed with Chlorhexidine or hydrogen peroxide.

    If the pus does not come out of the pimple even after applying Ichthyol ointment for the night, then it is recommended to treat a thin needle in alcohol or salicylic acid, carefully pierce the "head" that appears and squeeze out the pus with your fingers. It is recommended to resort to such a piercing of the "head" of the pimple only in extreme cases, it is better to avoid this technique, but simply continue to apply Ichthyol ointment to the pimple until it breaks out on its own and the pus does not come out.

    Ichthyol ointment for blackheads

    Since blackheads are nothing more than a banal accumulation of sebum in the pores, Ichthyol ointment is able to effectively remove them due to keratoplastic action. The fact is that the ointment simply dissolves the sebum accumulated in the pores, makes it liquid, as a result of which it flows out, the pores are freed and, accordingly, the black dots disappear.

    To remove blackheads, Ichthyol ointment is recommended to be applied pointwise to problem pores. However, the ointment can be applied to the skin of the nose in a continuous layer if there are many black spots on it. The ointment, distributed in a thin layer, is left for 1 - 2 hours, after which it is removed with a cotton pad and the skin is additionally washed with warm water and a mild cleanser.

    Ichthyol ointment to remove blackheads can be used as needed.

    Ichthyol ointment for wounds

    Ichthyol ointment accelerates the healing of various wounds, as well as suppresses the inflammatory process and eliminates infectious contamination. Due to these properties, the ointment simultaneously disinfects and accelerates healing, so it is not only possible, but also necessary to be used to treat any wound surfaces. Ichthyol ointment replaces at least two external agents - an antiseptic (for example, Chlorhexidine) and a drug that accelerates tissue repair (for example, Solcoseryl).

    To treat wounds, the ointment should be applied in a thin layer to the affected area, without rubbing, and cover it with a gauze napkin from above. The napkin, if necessary, is fixed with a bandage or plaster. The ointment is replaced with a new one every 8 to 10 hours. Treatment continues until the wound is completely healed.

    Ichthyol ointment for boils and boils, to remove pus

    Ichthyol ointment, due to its keratoplastic action, "draws out" pus well and promotes its outpouring. And since an abscess and a furuncle, in fact, represent a purulent inflammation of any area of the skin, for the cure of which it is necessary to remove pus and cleanse the tissues, then Ichthyol ointment is an excellent tool for their therapy.

    That is, when applied to an abscess or boil, Ichthyol ointment in a short time will lead to the organization of an abscess with the appearance of a clear purulent "head". If you continue to apply the ointment to the already formed abscess, it will "break through" in a short time, and the pus will flow out, as a result of which a clean wound is formed, which will need to be washed with Chlorhexidine and again treated with Ichthyol ointment already to accelerate healing and prevent re-attachment of the infection and suppuration.

    On abscesses, boils and abscesses Ichthyol ointment should be applied pointwise, in a thin layer, covered with gauze or cotton pad on top, fixed with adhesive plaster and left for 8-10 hours. Change the dressing with the ointment every 8 to 10 hours until the pus flows out and a clean wound is formed.

    Ichthyol ointment for hemorrhoids

    The ointment can be used during periods of exacerbation to relieve pain and inflammation, as well as to destroy pathogenic microbes that can complicate the disease by attaching an infection. In addition, Ichthyol ointment accelerates tissue healing.

    In case of hemorrhoids Ichthyol ointment is recommended to lubricate the skin of the anus in the evening, before going to bed, for 10 - 14 days. In the morning, the remnants of the ointment are removed with a cotton swab or gauze napkin, and the skin is washed with water. Before applying the ointment, the skin around the anus should also be washed with warm water and soap and dried with a soft cloth.

    Despite the fact that Ichthyol ointment will help stop inflammation and pain in hemorrhoids, it will not be able to cure the disease. Therefore, the ointment can only be used as an emergency aid when it is not possible to immediately consult a doctor. But immediately, as soon as the opportunity arises, you should contact a specialist who will prescribe treatment to completely eliminate hemorrhoids. Ichthyol ointment can also be used in combination with other medications prescribed by a doctor for quick healing of the tissues of the anus with hemorrhoids.

    Ichthyol ointment in gynecology

    In gynecological practice, Ichthyol ointment is used as part of the complex therapy of various infectious and inflammatory diseases of the internal genital organs in women, such as:
    woman's bladder and large intestine. Since the ointment has an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and analgesic effect, when it is used, inflammation and pain are stopped, and pathogenic microbes are destroyed, which leads to the complete elimination of the infectious and inflammatory process in the pelvic organs of a woman.

    Ichthyol ointment in the amount of 15 g (about a teaspoon) is applied to a cotton swab previously soaked in 10% glycerin solution, which is inserted into the rectum or vagina 1-2 times a day. Before the introduction of a tampon with ointment into the rectum, be sure to empty the intestines. If defecation did not occur spontaneously, then an enema must be done.

    The course of treatment with tampons with Ichthyol ointment in gynecological practice is usually 10-14 days. If necessary, such courses of treatment are repeated, maintaining intervals between them lasting at least 2-3 weeks.

    Ichthyol ointment for ingrown hair

    Ichthyol ointment can be an effective remedy for ingrown hairs, since it dissolves subcutaneous infiltrates, relieves inflammation and softens the upper layer of the epidermis, so that the hairs can "break through" and come out of the thickness of the tissues. And when the hairs are not inside the skin tissue, but outside, they can be removed with tweezers. However, Ichthyol ointment is not a panacea and not a very effective remedy for eliminating ingrown hairs, so the drug, of course, can be used, but without expecting much from it.

    So, to eliminate ingrown hairs, Ichthyol ointment is best applied to problem areas of the skin the next day after shaving or epilation. The ointment is applied in a thin layer to the desired areas, covered with gauze napkins on top, fixed with a bandage or plaster and left overnight. In the morning, the gauze napkin is removed along with the remnants of the ointment and the skin is washed well with warm water and soap, after which a regular nourishing cream is applied to it. Such a bandage with Ichthyol ointment is done daily until the tips of ingrown hairs appear on the surface of the skin, for which they can be hooked on and removed with tweezers. Usually, in order for ingrown hairs to break through the skin and come out, it is enough to apply the ointment 1 to 3 times.

    Often, cheap drugs are highly effective. One of them is Ichthyol ointment. This drug has a huge list of useful properties, so it has been very popular for more than a decade.

    Ichthyol ointment - composition and properties

    The main active ingredient present in this preparation is ichtammol. Its second name is ichthyol. It is a natural substance. It is obtained from sulfur: for this it is subjected to dry distillation. As a result of this procedure, shale oil is formed. Then it is treated with sulfuric acid and ammonia. As a result, a syrupy substance is formed. It has a reddish brown tint and a specific smell. The concentration of this substance in the ointment can be 10% or 20%. An additional component of this medication is petroleum jelly.

    Due to the fact that Ichthyol ointment has such an unusual composition, this drug has a considerable spectrum of pharmacological action. This drug is used for external use. The main effect of this drug is anti-inflammatory. This is achieved through the implementation of the following biological effects:

    1. Antiseptic- inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria and prevents their reproduction. In addition, it kills pathogens that are the cause of the inflammatory process.
    2. Keratoplastic- loosens the top layer of the skin and promotes the rejection of the affected tissues.
    3. Local anesthetic- the main active ingredient has an irritating effect on the nerve endings, followed by a decrease in their sensitivity.

    How does Ichthyol ointment work?

    The main advantage of this drug is that the drug penetrates deeply into the skin and has a powerful antimicrobial effect. This medication is delivered to the veins and capillaries. It is surprising how ichthyol ointment works: it has an effect not only on the symptoms of diseases, but also on the causes of their occurrence. It is noted that after several procedures of using this drug, puffiness goes away, inflammation and other pathological manifestations of pathologies decrease.

    What does Ichthyol ointment help from?

    This drug is prescribed for the following skin infections:

    • hydradenitis - inflammation (with the release of pus) of the sweat glands located in the armpits;
    • burn foci;
    • dermatitis;
    • eczema;
    • boils;
    • sycosis;

    In addition, Ichthyol ointment helps to stop painful sensations and reduces inflammation in the following diseases:

    • arthritis;

    Ichthyol ointment - application

Thanks to this, the drug perfectly copes with itchy skin and softens the keratinized areas of the skin. As a result, tissue elasticity increases.     • mastitis;
    • seborrhea;
    • atheroma;
    • haemorrhoids;
    • dandruff;
    • acne;
    • abscesses;

    When Ichthyol ointment is applied to an open wound or to ripening boils, it is important to remember that this drug does not harmonize properly with every drug. The reaction can be unpredictable. This applies to topical medications containing the following components:

    • alkaloids;
    • heavy metals;
    • salt;

    Ichthyol ointment for acne

    This drug softens infiltrates, reduces puffiness, dries out the tissues affected by inflammation, and promotes skin regeneration. Ichthyol ointment is applied pointwise. The procedure itself is as follows:

    1. Cover each rash with a thin layer.
    2. A piece of gauze or cotton pad is placed on top and fixed with a plaster.
    3. Leave it on for at least a few hours, but it is better to bandage it overnight.
    4. The problem area is treated with salicylic acid and hydrogen peroxide or Chlorhexidine. This procedure allows you to remove excess medication and dry the wound.

    When using Ichthyol ointment for acne on the face, it is important to consider their "maturity" and the number of rashes. If there are a lot of such subcutaneous formations, the drug can be applied not pointwise, but with a thin film. However, pimples cannot be squeezed out. Cosmetologists advise to wait a little: wait for the subcutaneous formations to mature under the influence of this drug. During this period, cosmetic oils, masks and creams should not be applied to the problem area of the skin.

    Ichthyol ointment for blackheads

    This medicine helps unclog pores that are clogged with makeup and grease. Ichthyol ointment dissolves blackheads and pulls their contents out. The rules for its application are as follows:

    2. Remove excess liquid with a paper towel.
    3. If there are many blackheads, the drug is applied in a thick layer. In case of single problems, spot processing is carried out.
    4. After a couple of hours, remove drug residues from the skin surface and treat the area with Salicylic acid or Chlorhexidine.

    Ichthyol ointment for boils

    At the initial stage, this drug accelerates the maturation of abscesses and the release of exudate to the outside. The sooner the boil is opened, the less likely the infection will begin to spread. In addition, in this case, the wound heals more quickly. Ichthyol ointment draws out pus. Its use is safe provided that the following requirements are met:

    1. The surface is treated with a cotton pad dipped in an antiseptic solution.
    2. Ichthyol ointment is applied in a thin layer to the problem area. The drug should not be rubbed in! Otherwise, this will lead to the fact that the integrity of the abscess will be violated, and the infection will spread to the adjacent area.
    3. Gauze is applied to the treated area and the "bandage" is fixed with a plaster. Such a compress is left for 7-8 hours.
    4. After the procedure, it is important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. This will prevent drug residues from getting on the mucous membranes.
    5. After 7-8 hours, the old bandage is removed. If necessary (if the boil has not broken through), the treatment procedures are repeated. The maximum allowable duration of therapy is 5 days.

    If a boil has formed on the face, it must be handled especially carefully. It is inadmissible to get the drug in the eyes: it is dangerous! It is recommended to dilute the ointment with Glycerin solution in a 1: 1 ratio. The mixture is applied in a thick layer to the inflamed area and left for 2-3 hours. After the product is removed with a cotton pad. In order for the desired effect to come as soon as possible, the procedure can be repeated several times a day.

    Ichthyol ointment for abscesses

More often after this, pus flows out and a clean wound is treated with Chlorhexidine.

Ichthyol ointment for hemorrhoids is rather considered an emergency aid. This drug should be used as follows:

The desired result may not come: everything is individual here, but you can try. It is advisable to cover problem areas with ichthyol ointment 12-24 hours after epilation or shaving. The procedure is performed as follows:

    1. The drug is applied in a thin layer.
    2. The area is covered with a gauze bandage on top and the application is fixed with an adhesive plaster.

    This drug effectively copes with female diseases. Ichthyol ointment tampons can be inserted both into the vagina and into the rectum. However, the first method is used very rarely, since the drug has an irritating effect on the mucous membrane. To mitigate this effect, it is recommended to dilute the ointment with Glycerin. Most often, tampons are inserted into the rectum. The drug is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, due to which it has a healing effect on nearby inflamed tissues. The procedure is recommended to be carried out as follows:

    1. Make a cleansing enema.
    2. The tampon is moistened in Glycerin and Ichthyol ointment is applied to it (up to 15 g).

    Content

    This inexpensive remedy, proven over the years, is not inferior in composition to most expensive local remedies with similar properties. Ichthyol ointment is used to treat various skin, infectious, fungal, neuralgic and other diseases. It has a specific smell of tar and black color.

    What is Ichthyol

    This substance is obtained by distillation of oil shale from sulfur. As a result of this process, ichthyol oil is isolated, which is treated with sulfuric acid. The next stage is the neutralization of the product with ammonia, as a result of which it becomes syrupy, gets a brown-red hue and a specific smell. This is called ichthyol. The resulting mixture is diluted with petroleum jelly to obtain a drug. For the first time, this substance began to be used back in the 19th century: then rheumatism, skin pathologies, and gout were treated with it. Properties possessed by ichthyol:

    • anti-inflammatory;
    • antiseptic;
    • local anesthetic;
    • keratolytic;
    • antibacterial;
    • antifungal;
    • anti-seborrheic.

Ichthyol ointment can suppress the action of enzymes that contribute to the degradation of arachidonic acid.
