The ointment is applied externally to the skin or inserted into the vagina or rectum on a tampon. It is preferable to inject the ointment into the rectum, since when it comes into contact with the mucous membrane of the vagina, it has a strong irritating effect, manifested by itching and burning. However, if a woman believes that it is better to inject the ointment into the vagina, then this can be done, since there will be no negative consequences other than irritation. But it is still recommended to stop injecting the ointment into the vagina if irritation appears, and switch to the introduction of the drug into the rectum.
For external use for skin diseases, neuralgia and arthritis, the ointment is applied in a thin layer to the affected surface of the skin, capturing also one centimeter of healthy skin from all sides of the lesion. The ointment is simply spread evenly over the surface of the skin and does not rub in. A layer that completely covers the skin so that it does not shine through is sufficient.
A sterile gauze napkin is applied over the ointment layer, which, if necessary, is fixed with a bandage.
Ichthyol ointment is applied 2 to 3 times a day for 10 to 20 days. It is optimal to replace the gauze napkins with ointment every 8 to 10 hours. For injecting ointment into the rectum or vagina take a ready-made hygienic tampon or make it yourself from cotton wool. To facilitate insertion, the tampon is moistened in a 10% glycerin solution so that it becomes smooth. After that, 15 g of ointment is applied to the tampon (about a teaspoon without a slide) and injected into the vagina or rectum.
To easily insert a tampon with ointment into the vagina, it is recommended to take the following position: lie on your back, bend your knees spread apart and lift your pelvis up. In this position, the entrance to the vagina will open as much as possible, as a result of which the tampon will easily go inside, and the ointment from it will not smear on the skin of the perineum, but will go inside. For the introduction, keeping the pelvis in an elevated position, you should lean well on the shoulder blades, with one hand spread the labia to the sides, and with the other hand gently push the tampon deep into the vagina with your finger.
It is best to insert the tampon into the rectum from the knee-elbow position. In this case, it is preliminarily recommended to lubricate the skin of the anus with a 10% glycerin solution, then strain the abdomen, as if trying to poop, and quickly push the tampon into the rectum with your finger. The tension of the abdomen with an imitation of an attempt to poop leads to some relaxation of the anal ring, as a result of which the tampon passes more easily into the rectum.
Tampons with Ichthyol ointment are injected into the vagina or rectum 1 to 2 times a day for 10 to 14 days. If necessary, the course of treatment can be repeated, maintaining an interval of at least 2 - 3 weeks.
Precautionary measures
