Exercises after fracture of 2 ankles with subluxation. Physiotherapy, physiotherapy and a set of exercises for rehabilitation after ankle fracture. Massage technique

The ankle is a bone formation located in the lower part of the lower leg. It is customary to distinguish the outer (lateral) and inner (medial) ankles. The first is a process at the bottom of the tibia. The second is formed by a protrusion in the lower part of the fibula.

The distal ends of the tibia and fibula together with numerous ligaments form the base of the ankle joint.

Ankle injuries are common injuries of the musculoskeletal system (up to 20%). In this case, the overwhelming majority of injuries to the ankle are bone fractures (up to 90%). In most cases, fractures result from the indirect impact of traumatic force.

According to statistics, after treatment, up to 5% of all patients remain disabled, and with severe fractures - up to 25%. Frequent consequences of fractures are arthrosis, flat feet, lameness, ankle stiffness. Therefore, it is very important to complete the rehabilitation course in a timely and complete manner, especially if there have been multiple or displaced fractures.

The recovery period begins shortly after the application of plaster or the installation of the apparatus for transosseous extrafocal osteosynthesis. Rehabilitation activities typically include:

  1. massage;
  2. remedial gymnastics;
  3. physiotherapy;
  4. use of orthopedic supplies;
  5. special food.

Do not forget that rehabilitation measures are prescribed exclusively by the attending physician on an individual basis. Only a specialist is able to assess the complexity of the fracture, as well as the age and condition of the patient.

Don't expect quick results. In the case of simple fractures, recovery will take about a month, in the case of severe ones - at least six months.

Actions before immobilization

Immediately after the fracture, it is necessary to visit the emergency room. Only there will be able to determine the presence and nature of the injury. If possible, you can apply a piece of ice to the damaged area, but not for more than 15 minutes.

In no case should you step on the injured limb, this can aggravate the situation.

If you do not have the opportunity to quickly get to the emergency room, do not be discouraged. Ankle injuries are considered fresh and respond well to treatment within up to 10 days. But it's better not to delay.

The diagnosis of injuries to the ankle joint is made on the basis of the nature of the mechanism of the injury, the clinical picture, and the mandatory X-ray examination in two projections. For treatment, plaster bandages, skeletal traction, devices for transosseous osteosynthesis and surgery are used. Treatment can be both outpatient (at home) and inpatient.

Sometimes in difficult cases, if it is necessary to reposition the fragments, the treatment is not carried out immediately, but wait several days when the edema and hematoma decrease. During this period, it is necessary to observe bed rest and ensure the immobility of the damaged joint. Already at this time it is recommended to do breathing exercises and general developmental exercises.

Features of the therapeutic gymnastics complex:

  1. the sore leg is motionless;
  2. frequency - from 4 times a day;
  3. the number of repetitions is 5-6 times.

How long to walk in a cast?

Plaster cast is the most common treatment for ankle fractures. The immobilization time will be determined by:

  1. the complexity of the fracture (open or closed injury, is there a displacement, subluxation, how many ligaments and bones are damaged);
  2. the age and lifestyle of the patient;
  3. the presence of other diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

On average, the timing of wearing a cast is as follows:

  1. isolated fracture of the inner or outer ankle without displacement - 3-4 weeks;
  2. fracture of one ankle with displacement - 4-5 weeks;
  3. fracture of one ankle with displacement and dislocation of the foot - 6-8 weeks;
  4. bicleolar fracture without displacement - 6-8 weeks;
  5. bi-malleolar fracture with displacement - 8-10 weeks;
  6. complex fractures of the ankles, combined with damage to adjacent bones - 10-12 weeks.

When can you step on your feet?

There is no single answer. This is decided by the attending physician. The beginning of the support load on the injured leg will depend on the following factors:

  1. method of treatment;
  2. the severity of the fracture.

So, when the fragments are stabilized with the help of a compression-distraction apparatus, a load with a support can be given already for 5-7 days. With osteosynthesis with a metal rod, screw, beam, training of the support function can begin in 2-3 weeks.

Many doctors give permission to walk only after an X-ray is taken and a completely healed fracture is visible on it. This often happens after the cast has been removed.

For minor ankle fractures that can be treated with a cast, you can use the support training plan below. To do this, you need a conventional floor scale. Weigh yourself on a scale with a healthy leg. Remember the weight. Next, you need to step on the scales with a sore foot, dosing the load according to the table. For example, if your body weight is 80 kg, then on the 14-15th day you need to step on the scales up to the 6.4 kg mark. We keep the load in time also according to the table.

It is necessary to step on the foot of the injured leg completely.

At the end of the day, walking is performed on crutches with support on the injured limb. It is necessary to step on your foot with an effort that is as close as possible to that obtained when training on floor scales during the day (remember the sensations when you step on the scales).

Recovery with massage

You can start this treatment procedure as early as 2-3 days after applying a plaster cast or CDA. Massage:

  1. improves blood and lymph circulation;
  2. accelerates the regeneration of bones and soft tissues;
  3. relieves tension and prevents muscle atrophy;
  4. eliminates puffiness.

While the leg is in a cast, only the exposed parts of the surface are subjected to the procedure. Daily manipulations are performed with the lumbar region, a healthy limb and the muscles of the thigh of the injured leg. The duration of the massage is 10-20 minutes, the course is 15-20 procedures.

The techniques used are stroking, rubbing, kneading, vibration. Massage sequence:

  1. small of the back;
  2. thigh (movements go from knee to groin);
  3. lower leg (movements go from the ankle joint to the knee);
  4. foot (movements go from the toes to the ankle).

Both the front and back surfaces of the lower extremities are massaged.

After removing immobilization at first, a gentle massage of the injured area is carried out, especially if there is lymphostasis. Suction massage with a slightly raised limb is also relevant.

It is desirable that the procedure be preceded by therapeutic exercises.

Ankle development with exercises

Therapeutic gymnastics is the basis of ankle fracture rehabilitation. The beginning and amount of physical activity is determined by the attending physician and exercise therapy specialist. As a rule, the first exercises can be started shortly after the application of the cast (after 2-3 days), when bed rest is still prescribed.

If you are tired while doing gymnastics, take a break. It is not necessary to perform the entire set of exercises with strength. The load must be increased gradually.

If the exercise causes pain, you should do it more carefully or postpone it altogether until better times. Monitor your well-being carefully.

Immobilization period, bed rest

Features of the set of exercises in this period:

  1. the number of workouts - 2-3 per day;
  2. the starting position for doing the exercises is lying;
  3. the complex mainly consists of breathing and restorative exercises;
  4. special exercises are performed in the middle of a workout;
  5. the number of repetitions is 4-6 times;

Ideomotor exercises are also recommended. This is a special group of mental exercises. Their obvious advantage is that you can perform those movements that the immobilized part of the body is not yet able to perform. The technique is as follows:

Practice shows that when supplementing ordinary gymnastics with ideomotor exercises, the result is achieved faster. It is better to perform ideomotor training in the morning or in the evening, when the body is most relaxed.

Consultation with an exercise therapy instructor is required. It is he who will be able to choose the right exercises, taking into account your individual situation.

Immobilization period, free mode

Features of the complex of remedial gymnastics in this period:

  1. number of workouts - 2 per day;
  2. i.p. to perform exercises - lying, sitting, standing (without support on the injured leg);
  3. the complex is based on breathing and general developmental exercises;
  4. the number of repetitions is 6-10 times;
  5. the pace of execution is slow and medium.

After removing immobilization

In the first few days after removing the orthosis or plaster, perform the same set of exercises as during immobilization. Then you should move on to training aimed specifically at developing the ankle.

There are a lot of exercises designed to recover from ankle fractures. However, some of them are allowed to be performed only a few weeks after the removal of the cast. In addition, there are movements that are allowed for some types of fracture, but are strictly prohibited for others. That is why it is extremely important that the exercise complex is compiled by an exercise therapy specialist, taking into account your unique situation.

Features of the set of exercises after removal of immobilization:

  1. number of workouts - once a day;
  2. i.p. for exercise - lying, sitting, standing;
  3. at the heart of the complex are special exercises for developing the ankle;
  4. the pace of execution is medium.
  5. Watching video tutorials will help you become more familiar with the exercise technique.

    You can think of many more ways to develop a leg after an ankle fracture. Walking, walking up and down stairs is excellent exercise to help you cope with the residual effects of an injury. Running, jumping, cycling, swimming are also very useful.

The ankle, connected to the heel, forms the base of the ankle. The lower legs are most stressed during the day, especially in the presence of excess weight. A fracture of this leg is considered a complex injury, the treatment of which includes professional rehabilitation and recovery.

If you ignore the agreed period of treatment, serious complications will develop, the resulting fracture will remind of itself for a long period, sometimes for life. Leg rehabilitation can be done independently at home, but it is better to undergo rehabilitation under the constant supervision of a professional. The doctor will assess the risks and possible complications. Thanks to specialized knowledge, the process will take the shortest possible time. Do not rely solely on the doctor. It is important to follow the recommendations and appointments for the full period.

The first part of any fracture rehabilitation is to wear a plaster cast. The length of the period depends on:

  • The complexity of the fracture;
  • Complications that have arisen during surgery or plaster cast;
  • The nature of the ankle injury.

If no complications were observed, the cast is removed after 5-10 weeks. If the fracture is displaced, the period may drag on for six months.

After a fracture, it is important to follow the doctor's recommendations, to be constantly under his supervision. In practice, a temporary plaster cast is often initially applied, worn before the bone tissue is fused. Then the temporary measure is replaced with a closed plaster cast, which is removed after the fracture has completely healed.

In order for the fusion process to occur correctly and quickly, you cannot lean on the injured leg until the doctor's permission. Any recovery exercises are done with the permission of the doctor.

The second part of the rehabilitation period after an ankle fracture is aimed at restoring the mobility of the leg, which was in a cast. More often, the patient is assigned procedures that are used in a complex:

  • Physiotherapy;
  • Massage;
  • Exercises exercise therapy.

Physiotherapy

During the recovery period, the patient is assigned physiotherapy procedures. Thanks to their use, clear and definite goals are achieved in restoring the mobility of the ankle:

  • Strengthening bone tissue;
  • Acceleration of bone fusion processes;
  • Normalization of blood circulation processes;
  • Removal of puffiness.

Effectiveness in the recovery of ankle fractures are:

  1. Electrophoresis;
  2. Ultraviolet exposure;
  3. Warming up;
  4. Mud applications;
  5. The impact of currents of a harmless nature.

At the beginning of the recovery, the procedures are carried out under the strict supervision of health workers; in the future, it is permissible to develop the leg independently. Physiotherapy courses are often complemented by therapeutic massage courses.

Features of massage during recovery

It is important during the rehabilitation period to visit a professional massage therapist for the correct perception of the treatment procedure. In case of swelling of the ankle fracture site, massage will help to cope with the violation. Regular manipulation helps to restore tissue sensitivity.

During the massage, the main procedures are:

  • Stroking;
  • Trituration;
  • Kneading.

To improve the result, massage is complemented by the use of scented oils that improve lymph drainage.

At the first procedures, noticeable discomfort is noted, which gradually decreases.

It is desirable that the massage be performed by a master, but sometimes this is not possible. Then massage should be done on your own at home, preferably in the morning and evening. When carrying out, they are standing. Techniques for carrying out procedures are similar to professional massage. Each technique is performed at least ten times.

Remember, when carrying out the massage procedure, it is important not to overdo it, not to cause pain.

The power of exercise therapy

After attending physiotherapy and massage procedures, they are engaged in further restoration of the injured ankle, and rehabilitation exercises will be required. With each exercise, the damaged ankle joint will gradually regain mobility, muscles and tissues will return elasticity and firmness.

It is worth starting the exercises under the guidance and supervision of a master who helps in drawing up the complex, you will need to monitor the correctness of the implementation. In the future, it is allowed to perform the exercises independently at home. The duration of the lesson does not exceed 10 minutes. The load on the injured limb increases gradually; if pain occurs, it is recommended to temporarily postpone the exercise.

When restoring the ankle after a fracture, the complex of physiotherapy exercises consists of simple exercises that can be performed easily and simply. The complex includes approximately:

  1. Walking with full support on the injured leg. It is important not to overdo it so as not to worsen the condition of the ankle;
  2. Swing your leg in different directions, back and forth. When raising a leg, it is worth holding it for a moment;
  3. Translational rotation of the foot;
  4. Lying on the floor, cross leg swings;
  5. Gradual ups from heel to toe. The exercise can be done on one leg;
  6. Performing neat swings in different directions with a slight delay of the injured leg in the upper position for a moment;
  7. Raising the leg back without arching the back;
  8. Raising the knee with a slight delay in the leg.

When recovering, it is important to practice walking. It is permissible to just walk on flat terrain or use exercise equipment. For the simplest exercise machine, choose the simplest ladder in your home. Climbing stairs is much more difficult after a fracture than climbing.

The main task of therapeutic physical education is the gradual return of the mobility of the affected leg area. Allocate other goals achieved when performing exercises:

  • Thanks to the exercises, the swelling of the injured ankle is reduced;
  • Exercises become preventive measures for the development of flat feet and curvature of the finger;
  • Blood circulation improves.

Additionally, the set of exercises, with the help of which the recovery is carried out, is filled with flexion exercises, performed with fingers and other joints. It is permissible to take small objects with your fingers, roll a tennis ball on the floor. Slow walking alternately has a good recovery effect: on the heels, then on the toes. It is important during the recovery period to wear shoes with a special orthopedic insole.

Remember throughout the recovery period that the duration of the course directly depends on the severity and nature of the resulting ankle fracture. If you ignore gymnastics, the consequences of the fracture are foreseen to be serious. The damaged area of the ankle can be uncomfortable for a long time, causing pain in the injured area.

Features of recovery in case of a fracture with displacement

With such a damage with a displacement, the recovery period takes much longer, the damaged lower limb after a fracture is located in a fixed position for a long time, it needs to be developed more carefully.

Recovery procedures begin already during the period when a plaster cast is placed on the leg. The beginning of the procedures is prescribed already from the second week after the fracture is received, the exercises at the first stage of recovery are as gentle as possible. An x-ray is a signal of the possibility of carrying out the first sessions, when the doctor observes on the film the beginning of the regenerative processes of accretion and damaged tissues. Exercises begin to be introduced gradually.

In front of the ankle with a displacement, it is more often referred to as injuries of the greatest complexity and danger; recovery at regular intervals is monitored using X-rays. Thanks to this examination, the slightest changes in healing are monitored.

If the ankle bone does not grow together for a long period, surgical intervention by a surgeon is required, additional development. Complication will require an increase in the rehabilitation period.

Ankle fracture is the most common injury. Recovery from a leg injury occurs in two stages. The first is treatment, and the second is the return of the ankle to mobility. Exercise after an ankle fracture can bring a person back to their old life without any consequences in the form of lameness.

Traumatologists call one of the most common skeletal fractures an ankle fracture. It happens in 20% of all fractures. The number of accidents increases in winter. Overweight people, athletes and children are at risk for ankle fractures.

If you suspect an ankle injury, never step on a broken leg. This will only aggravate the situation and displace the bone, which will make it difficult to treat. The leg must be fixed with a plaster cast.

It is necessary to carry out rehabilitation for an ankle fracture, based on the nature of the injury.

Damage classification:

  • Fracture of the leg with displacement, without displacement;
  • Open or closed leg fracture;
  • Ankle fracture with ligament rupture;
  • Two-ankle, three-ankle fractures of the ankles.

Competent treatment and rehabilitation stage will be the key to life without disabilities in the future. When the integrity of the bone is restored, the physiotherapist recommends doing complex exercises after an ankle fracture, as a result, the ankle retains its mobility. The treatment is carried out only under the supervision of professionals.

For fractures, the plaster cast is removed after 5-7 weeks. The duration of the stay in the cast increases with fractures with displacement and other complications. The recovery period takes up to 3 weeks. Based on the X-rays of the fractures, the doctor draws up a calendar of exercise therapy exercises. According to the degree of bone fusion, it is determined from what moment it is possible to start physiotherapy exercises.

Important! Refusal of medical care in connection with any fractures and referral to non-professionals will lead to complete or partial immobility of the ankle.

Recovery plan

Factors affecting the time of the recovery period:

  • The age of the patient;
  • The severity of the fracture;
  • The presence of contraindications;
  • The ability to follow a diet with a high calcium content in the diet;
  • Compliance with the conditions of treatment.

Exercises before removing the cast

The doctor prescribes exercises after 2 weeks of being in a cast. This is due to the fact that the injured ankle is immobilized for up to two months. Therefore, as soon as there is a positive dynamics of bone fusion, rehabilitation begins.

Physiotherapy exercises for a fracture can shorten the recovery time from injury. The purpose of the classes is to improve blood circulation. They are carried out every other day so that the leg does not get tired. Before exercise, knead the joint by wiggling the fingers.

Crutches must be used to perform the exercises. It is strictly forbidden to step on the injured leg. Neglect can damage the ankle joint, further treatment will only take place surgically.

Remedial gymnastics for fracture

  • Lean your hands on the edge of the table, take the injured limb aside while inhaling. On exhalation, return to the starting position. It takes up to 40 seconds in time;
  • Focusing on the healthy leg, raise the injured leg as high as possible;
  • Focusing on the healthy leg, take the injured leg back and lift up to 10 times;
  • Wiggling toes of a broken leg.

Important! Gymnastics classes are carried out after permission and only under the supervision of the attending physician. Self-medication is prohibited.

The number of sessions of physiotherapy exercises is associated with the patient's well-being. It is recommended to exercise at least 3 times a day. Exercise time is increased gradually.

To reduce the load, crutches are purchased, they are used for up to 2 weeks. Then they refuse, so as not to get used to and not develop an incorrect gait.

Types of rehabilitation measures

It will take up to 25 days to return all vital functions after removing the cast. For a complete recovery, additional measures are prescribed, such as therapeutic exercises after an ankle fracture.

After the bone has completely healed and the plaster has been removed, the physical therapist may allow health improvement exercises. The workload and time of classes increase over time. An exercise plan is drawn up individually for each patient. Factors associated with fractures and severity are taken into account. Classes are held in specialized clinics and hospitals. After an ankle fracture, after removing the plaster, health procedures are prescribed.

Physiotherapy

The goals of remedial gymnastics:

  • Prevent lameness;
  • Restore the motor ability of the ankle;
  • Restore blood circulation;
  • Prepare your leg for walking.

The efforts of doctors will be meaningless without the patient's desire to return to his old life. Workouts cannot be skipped or done at home on their own without the consent of the doctor. Wearing orthopedic shoes is desirable.

Remedial gymnastics:

  • Walking with an emphasis on the entire foot. It is recommended to go up the stairs. When descending, you need to be careful and stick to the railing;
  • Squats. If possible, without lifting the heels off the floor;
  • Walking alternately on heels and toes;
  • Rolling with the foot of a small ball or bottle;
  • Trying to pick up a pen or pencil with your toes;
  • Jumping in place and to the sides. It is recommended to remember a child's play in classics;
  • Running with a side step;
  • Knead the inside and outside of the foot by standing on it;
  • Jumping onto a small ledge;
  • Raising the knee with a delay in the air;
  • Swimming.

Physiotherapy helps to avoid flat feet, curvature of the foot, relieves tissue edema. During the first sessions, the patient receives only a small amount of stress. A chair is used for support. Exercises are done under the supervision of a trainer and are carried out daily.

Massage after ankle injury

When massaging your feet:

  • Blood circulation improves;
  • Tissue edema is removed;
  • Pain syndrome disappears;
  • The motor function of the foot returns to normal.

After the plaster has been removed, massage sessions are performed. At the first visits, pain relieving gels are used. The ankle remains sensitive to pain even after healing. Dynamic recovery affects the number of massage sessions. Recommended from 10 to 25 visits to the massage therapist.

Massage is a movement of the palm around the leg with flexion and extension of the ankle. It includes:

  • Kneading the foot;
  • Rubbing the tendons.

Until complete recovery, an elastic bandage is applied to the ankle. During treatment with massage, it is recommended to do baths in a solution of 15 g of salt per liter of water. The doctor additionally prescribes special ointments for rubbing the muscles. The attending physician permits to do the massage on his own and not to attend the procedures in special cases: the patient does not have time to visit the masseur or there is no professional. The patient himself learns simple massage methods: gently knead the leg, shake it, stroke it.

Self-massage in tandem with professional massage returns mobility to the leg much faster.

Physiotherapy for trauma

Physiotherapy is prescribed even before the removal of the cast. When selecting procedures, all contraindications are taken into account. Therapy is aimed at:

  • Strengthening the bone;
  • Removal of edema;
  • Restoration of blood circulation.

To treat the consequences, procedures are prescribed:

  • Electrophoresis is aimed at accelerating the formation of calluses. During the procedure, novocaine is used. This reduces the dose of pain medications. The procedure normalizes the outflow of blood. Electrophoresis is performed daily for 10 days;
  • Warming up;
  • Mud baths are applied for 1 month. Hydrotherapy restores the limb, increases muscle tone;
  • Phonophoresis is carried out every 2 days. Aimed at relieving bone fragility;
  • Magnetic therapy is aimed at preventing muscle atrophy. 10 procedures are carried out, one daily, it is prescribed while wearing plaster;
  • Ultraviolet radiation helps the absorption and production of vitamin D. This improves the absorption of calcium, which is necessary for bone healing.

Modern physiotherapy procedures help to get rid of hematomas, blood stasis and edema. The rehabilitation period and the time to return to normal life is faster. Therefore, you should not ignore the treatment procedures.

When treating the consequences of a fracture, it is prohibited:

  • Strong physical activity;
  • Walking on uneven terrain;
  • Long walks;
  • Wearing high heels and uncomfortable shoes;
  • Active dance classes.

Exercises for a displaced ankle fracture

As in the case of a fracture without displacement, rehabilitation exercises are prescribed by the doctor even at the stage of being in a cast. Classes are performed as sparingly as possible. The process is necessarily controlled by X-rays. The attending physician examines the bone fusion over time. At the slightest sign of slowing down the recovery processes, the exercises are either canceled or corrected.

The ankle joins the heel to form the base of the ankle. As you know, the lower legs carry the main load during the day. It is especially difficult in this regard for people who have problems with excess weight. is a serious injury, the treatment of which requires a course of rehabilitation. Many doctors believe that this period of therapy is the most important, and if you skip it, you can get unpleasant complications. In this case, repeated relapse is possible, and the old trauma will make itself felt for the rest of your life.

The recovery period of the ankle after a fracture depends on the complexity and type of injury, the presence of complications, etc. If the injury did not cause additional problems, then the rehabilitation process is easy. In the case of a two-malleolus or the time for treatment is significantly increased, because the bone breaks in several places at once. Regardless of the complexity of the injury, it is necessary to go through the recovery process under the supervision of a specialist in order to avoid unpleasant consequences.

Basic rehabilitation processes

The first step in recovering a leg after an ankle fracture involves wearing a plaster cast. The duration of this process depends on the complexity of the injury, the problems encountered during the application of the plaster cast, and the nature of the ankle injury. The initial stage of recovery from a non-displaced ankle fracture lasts approximately 1 to 2 months. If additional problems have appeared, then the plaster cast may not be removed for six months.

The patient must understand that this injury is serious, therefore, the doctor's supervision and control over the rehabilitation process are essential. In most cases, a plaster cast is applied to begin with and do not remove it until the bone tissue is fused. Then a closed cast is applied, which is worn until the leg is completely healed. In order for the bone to heal at a normal pace, you cannot load the ankle with your body weight.

The second stage of recovery from an ankle fracture consists of exercises to improve the mobility of the injured leg. Usually, specialists prescribe the following procedures to the patient:

  • physiotherapy;
  • massage;
  • physiotherapy.

It is worth noting that these procedures must be used in combination in order to achieve maximum results in the shortest possible time.

Features of the rehabilitation period

Wearing a plaster cast is an essential part of the recovery process from an external ankle fracture. After this period, the leg becomes weak and inactive. And in order to restore her strength, mobility and normal gait, the joint must be regularly developed. This will require the perseverance and diligence of not only doctors, but also the patient himself. After removing the cast, the patient will have difficulty walking, and in order to facilitate this process, it is recommended to purchase an elbow crutch. However, this product must not be abused. The fact is that if you use it for more than two weeks, the habit of lameness can form.

Immediately after removing the plaster cast, the patient is prescribed a course of electromagnetic therapy. It includes electrophoresis, mud baths, warming up the ankle. These procedures are required to restore the ankle after a fracture and swelling that occurs as a result of wearing a cast.

Then the patient is prescribed a massage, the duration of which depends on the specific case. This procedure can last up to 5 days, and the entire rehabilitation period. As you know, massage helps to restore the former mobility and development of the joint. This procedure can be carried out by both the doctor himself and the patient as one of the stages of recovery after an ankle fracture at home.

After all these therapeutic measures, the patient needs to undergo a course of rehabilitation exercises. This step is mandatory and it is not recommended to ignore it. Physiotherapy is aimed at restoring the mobility of the ankle. It includes a set of exercises with a systematic increase in the load on the injured leg. Let's talk about all the stages of rehabilitation in more detail.

Physiotherapy

After the doctor removes the cast, he immediately prescribes physiotherapy. Recovery of a leg after an ankle fracture is impossible without these procedures. They are aimed at rehabilitation of the ankle, as well as giving mobility. In addition, with their help, the following goals are achieved:

  • bone tissue is strengthened;
  • the bone fusion process increases;
  • blood circulation is normalized;
  • puffiness is removed.

Most physicians prescribe roughly the same physiotherapy treatments as they are the most effective. Among them stand out:

  • electrophoresis;
  • warming up the joint;
  • taking mud baths;
  • the influence of harmless currents;
  • exposure to ultraviolet light.

Initially, all these activities are carried out under the strict supervision of a physician. In the future, the patient can carry out them independently. The length of the recovery period after an ankle fracture depends, among other things, on the patient's conscientiousness. After all, if you follow all the doctor's recommendations, then the process will end as quickly as possible. The next stage of rehabilitation is massage. We will consider this procedure in more detail.

Early treatment massage

The fact is that this measure is more effective to use in combination with physiotherapy or physiotherapy exercises. In other words, massage can be applied at all stages of the treatment. However, the tasks he performs are always different. At the initial stage of therapy, it is aimed at relaxing the muscles, and at the later stage - normalizing the mobility of the ankle.

For the first time, massage is used on the second or third day after injury. It can be applied through plaster, the main thing is to do everything right, and then the result will not take long. Many doctors recommend skeletal traction. It is aimed at gradually redirecting the fragments and holding them in the desired position with the help of weights. This is a fairly effective technique, but there is one drawback - a long bed rest is required, sometimes it lasts several months.

Before the massage, it is necessary to achieve relaxation of all the patient's muscles; for this, vibration is used. It is worth noting that, along with the injured leg, attention should be paid to the healthy one. The procedure should not be accompanied by pain or discomfort. The duration of a daily session is no more than 3-5 minutes. If the patient has a skeletal traction, then massage should be done outside the focus, paying attention to the lower leg and hips.

Correctness of movement

The recovery time after an ankle fracture depends on the correctness and direction of the techniques. Often the massage is done by a specialist who knows all the nuances. But if the patient himself will carry out this procedure, then he needs to know where to start and how to end.

Each session should begin with stroking the groin and popliteal lymph nodes. Kneading and rubbing can be done in any direction; in such a situation, the flow does not matter.

It is worth noting that stroking should be done with your fingers, fist, or the entire surface of your palm. As for rubbing, it is better to perform movements with great intensity in different directions. The kneading technique is carried out at the later stages of treatment, since it is aimed at increasing muscle tone and normalizing ankle mobility. It must be performed with fists and palms. Kneading is similar to mixing the dough, the movements must be intense.

The massage is completed in the ankle fracture recovery complex with percussive tapping and patting. Such actions can be performed with a fist or the edge of the palm. It is recommended to make stroking between sessions, as it helps to catch your breath and relax a little for both participants in the process.

Massage in the later stages

When complete recovery is approaching, it is necessary to tone the muscles and regain their former mobility. To do this, use such techniques as kneading, rubbing and shock vibration. In addition, the use of intermittent strokes is quite effective. In the process of recovering from an ankle fracture, you can perform this massage at home. However, the person who performs it must be a professional, since one careless movement can lead to complications.

As soon as the plaster is removed, you cannot immediately proceed to intensive techniques, because this will not lead to anything good. Moreover, such diligence will only negatively affect the recovery time after an ankle fracture. This is due to the fact that improper movements will cause pain in the ankle area, swelling may appear, and rehabilitation will be delayed.

If, nevertheless, there is an inflammation, then it is recommended to use a light massage to relieve it. The movements should be directed from the edges to the center, then the usual stroking should be applied. This simple technique cannot be underestimated; the duration of the rehabilitation period directly depends on it.

During the massage, you do not need to touch the fracture site. It is much more effective to massage the area around it. Excessive touching of the injury causes severe pain and discomfort.

After removing the closed plaster

As soon as the cast is removed, you need to gradually increase the physical activity on the leg. Massage in the first two weeks should be done very carefully, let the ankle get used to it. Then it is already possible to make intermittent strokes, while the movements of the hands will be carried out towards each other.

After a month, it's time to start stroking with affecting the focus areas. However, you still need to take precautions and not make sudden movements. Recovery from a non-displaced ankle fracture occurs fairly quickly. If this is the case, then after a month you can already massage a little more boldly, you should add a slight tapping.

As already noted, massage is most effective when combined with remedial gymnastics. In addition, during the rehabilitation period, you can regularly take mud baths and physiotherapy techniques. If the patient did everything correctly, under the strict supervision of a doctor, then the rehabilitation process will take place as quickly and efficiently as possible. Recovery after ankle fracture will be complete and the patient will be able to return to their normal life. It should be remembered that this can only be achieved by following the recommendations of specialists.

Physiotherapy

After the patient has undergone a course of physiotherapy and massage, it's time to start physiotherapy exercises. In other words, you need to do exercises to recover from an ankle fracture. Each lesson is very important, and is aimed at returning the necessary mobility to the joint, and the muscles will be able to regain their former elasticity.

To begin with, you should perform the exercises under the guidance of the specialist who appointed this course. In the future, upon achieving certain results, you can continue to study at home. It should be remembered that one exercise in time should take no more than 10 minutes. If pain occurs in the ankle area, you need to postpone this task for a while. It is worth noting that the load must be gradually increased so that the leg gets used to it.

In most cases, doctors prescribe a course of fairly simple exercises that can be performed without effort. Typically, the set of tasks includes:

  • walking with support on the injured leg, the main thing here is not to overdo it;
  • swings with a sore leg in different directions, it is advisable to hold it for a while in the air with the next swing;
  • swings with both legs in a prone position;
  • lifting from heel to toe of both legs, you can do this with one leg;
  • lifting your legs back, trying not to bend your back;
  • lifting the knee with a slight delay.

It is difficult to overestimate the usefulness of walking during the rehabilitation period. You need to constantly walk, first on a flat surface, then you can use the simulators. If there is a staircase at home, you should practice on it. It must be remembered that after an injury, going down is much more difficult than going up.

The tasks of physiotherapy exercises

Of course, the main goal of gymnastics is to restore the mobility of the injured leg area. However, this is not the only challenge. In addition, the following physical education purposes are distinguished:

  • due to slight physical exertion, the swelling of the damaged part of the leg is removed;
  • exercises, in addition to rehabilitation purposes, are aimed at preventing flat feet and curvature of the finger;
  • there is an improvement in blood circulation.

How long does it take to recover from an ankle fracture? It depends on how the rehabilitation process will go. Sometimes doctors prescribe additional exercises to speed up recovery. For example, flexion exercises are quite popular; they are performed with knuckle fingers. It is also very useful during this period to walk on heels and toes alternately. In this case, it is imperative to have special orthopedic insoles that must be put into shoes.

It must be remembered that recovery time also depends on the severity of the ankle fracture. All doctor's recommendations must be followed. Otherwise, the rehabilitation process will take a long time and lead to serious consequences. The area of the ankle where the fracture occurred will be constantly sore and haunted. What then to say about ankle fracture? Recovery from surgery takes a very long time. Of course, a fracture of both ankles is a very rare event, and certainly the most severe.

Recovering from a misaligned ankle fracture

This is probably one of the most difficult cases. The rehabilitation period for such a fracture cannot be determined even approximately. However, we can definitely say that the recovery will be very long. The fact is that with such a fracture, the lower limb remains immobile, and it must be carefully and systematically developed. These procedures begin while the plaster cast is still in place. Usually doctors recommend intervening in the second week.

To begin with, the simplest movements are performed, which the tongue does not turn to call exercises. The doctor determines the time when new tasks can be introduced with the help of an X-ray. If signs of bone fusion appear on it, then gradually the ankle begins to load.

As you know, a displaced ankle fracture is one of the most difficult injuries, and therefore recovery takes a very long time. The rehabilitation process is monitored by a specialist using regular X-rays. If they do not show improvement over time, then surgical intervention is required. And after the operation, you also need to go through the recovery process.

What exercises cannot be performed during the rehabilitation period?

Many people, due to their constant employment, cannot wait until the bone is completely healed, and they put a lot of stress on the leg. This is strictly prohibited, such actions will lead to very unpleasant consequences. During rehabilitation, you cannot run, jump, walk on the outer and inner sides of the foot, ride a bicycle, dance, move in heels, or do strength exercises.

Correctly performed gymnastics will help the patient to fully recover from the fracture, return to a normal life. You need to take care of the injured leg, not overload with unnecessary exercise, and avoid injury. It is recommended to take short walks, preferably with a guide. The elastic bandage may not be removed until complete recovery, if a feeling of discomfort appears without it.

During the year after the fracture, you should take care once again, because if a relapse occurs, the ankle may not fully recover.

Ankle is one of the processes of the bone that is part of the ankle joint. Each ankle has two ankles: an inner and an outer ankle. The inner ankle is located on the inner side of the leg, and the outer ankle is, respectively, on the outside. The ankles are the two protruding bones of the ankle joint.
Ankle fracture is one of the most common ankle injuries after dislocation. According to statistics, ankle fractures account for about 60% of all ankle injuries.
You can break your ankle if you fall, for example, during icy conditions, or if you fall from a ladder or because of high heels. A fracture of the ankle can also be obtained when playing sports, often such injuries are caused by sports such as alpine skiing, motorcycling, cycling. It is also common to break your ankle while rollerblading, skating, or in an accident. Symptoms of this fracture are joint numbness, a feeling of fullness, and pain comes a little later. In no case should the victim stand on the injured leg, it is necessary to provide it with rest, otherwise displacement may occur (although, as a rule, a slight displacement is already taking place). As soon as possible, the victim must be taken to the nearest emergency room or hospital.
In the hospital, the doctor examines the injured limb, takes an X-ray, and as a result of the information received, he conducts treatment. First, the fracture site is anesthetized with solutions of local anesthetics, such as novocaine, lidocaine, etc. If there is an isolated fracture of the external ankle, then a plaster cast is applied to the patient from the upper third of the leg to the tips of the toes, the so-called plaster boot. With this type of fracture, immobilization lasts approximately 3 weeks. Then the bandage is removed. The doctor prescribes physiotherapeutic treatment, which consists in massaging the affected limb, taking special baths, and paraffin and ozokerite applications are applied to the sore leg. Physiotherapy is prescribed for ankle fracture, which plays an important role in treatment.
If the X-ray shows a fracture of both ankles or a fracture of both ankles is combined with a fracture of the posterior part of the lower end (epiphysis) of the tibia without displacement of the fragments, and there is also an expansion of the ankle joint cavity, then in this case a plaster cast is applied from the fingertips to the middle third hips, which includes the knee joint. The plaster of paris from the knee joint is removed after a month, and the plaster boot remains up to 6 weeks.
If an X-ray shows displacement of fragments in an ankle fracture, they are compared (the so-called one-step reduction). The patient is given local anesthesia, and, with the help of an assistant, the doctor manually matches the fragments using special techniques. After the fragments are aligned, a plaster cast is applied to the leg from the tips of the toes to the middle third of the thigh. In this case, the position of the foot depends on the type of fracture. Immobilization lasts about 6 weeks. A week after the reduction, the doctor performs another control X-ray examination.
If it is impossible to compare the fragments, then surgical treatment is performed. In order to fix the fragments, special screws and plates are used. Typically, the inner ankle is secured with a screw and the outer ankle with a plate. In the event of a rupture of the ligaments between the tibia and fibula, the bones are connected with a cancellous screw. After surgical treatment, a plaster boot is applied to the diseased limb for 6 weeks. In the future, the patient is prescribed physiotherapy, Exercise therapy and PH for ankle fracture.
After removing the plaster, rehabilitation measures should be started. First, electromagnetic therapy is prescribed, this is done with the aim of restoring blood and lymph circulation and relieving swelling. Then the patient is prescribed a complex of exercise therapy for ankle fracture. At first, the patient will not be able to do without support, so he needs to purchase an elbow crutch, thanks to such a balanced support, the hand is not overstrained and significant assistance is provided when walking. However, after two weeks, you need to gradually abandon the crutch so that walking with the crutch does not become a habit. True, lameness still remains, but with the help of remedial gymnastics and physiotherapy exercises, you can get rid of it.
Remedial gymnastics for ankle fracture is the path to complete recovery. This should not be neglected. After a long static position of the joint, it must be developed. It is necessary to restore the mobility of the joint and the ability to withstand the load. The patient will be able to develop a joint with the help of exercise therapy - exercise therapy for ankle fracture especially under the supervision of an experienced instructor. You need to start small, while doing the exercises, you can use the support of the chair. It is important to adhere to the basic rules: first you need to return the range of motion of the joint, and then the ability to give it full load when walking. It is best if the patient will do this under the supervision of an instructor who will follow the exercises and help develop the ankle.

For the further functioning of the injured limb, it is very important to follow all the doctor's prescriptions. I must say that exercises after an ankle fracture should be started while the leg is still in a cast. Undoubtedly, during this period it is impossible to load a sore leg, but now the task of exercise therapy for an ankle fracture is to improve blood circulation throughout the body, because the better the blood circulates through the vessels, the faster any injury heals.
At the very beginning, the exercises should be done every other day, and then you can do it daily.
So, exercise therapy exercises for a foot fracture (the leg is in a cast):
1. I. P. - standing on a healthy leg. Stand near a chair or wall and lean on your hands so as not to lose your balance. Cross swings are performed. First, you need to start moving the sick leg - take it to the side (while inhaling), then perform the adduction movement, cross in front of the healthy leg (exhale). Run for 30 seconds.
2. I. P. - the same. Perform leg swings to the side. In this case, take the sore leg as high as possible, linger for a few seconds, then lower the leg. Run 10-15 times.
3. I. P. - the same. Perform a knee lift. Raise the knee until the thigh is parallel to the floor. In this position, linger for a few seconds, and then lower your leg. Perform in two counts, within 30 seconds.
4. I. P. - the same. Raise your legs back. Raise the injured leg back as high as possible, then make a delay for a few seconds and return to the starting position. Attention! You cannot bend in the lower back.

After the cast is removed, the patient is advised to perform exercise therapy exercises for ankle fracture, similar to those performed in the exercise therapy complex for ankle fracture in the second period of treatment (see exercise therapy for ankle fracture).
In addition to physical exercises, massage or self-massage is very helpful in restoring the damaged limb.
It should be noted that during the entire treatment of an ankle fracture, the patient must take vitamins containing calcium. But, since calcium must have time to be absorbed, it is better if calcium is contained in the preparation in moderation. Also, the patient can take finely ground eggshells (only the eggs must be fresh).
In order to quickly restore the damaged joint, it is necessary to walk more, using any ladder as a simulator. But it must be borne in mind that going down will be more difficult than going up.
And the most important exercise (and the most accessible) is just normal walking. But do not torture yourself, walk as much as you can walk and think less about the injured leg. Be persistent, use regular exercise therapy for an ankle fracture in your treatment, and then you can achieve excellent results!
