Monitor samsung 24 diagonal 390 in vat. Measurement of uniformity of black and white fields, brightness and power consumption

What did not like

Eyes hurt even at 50% brightness and 50% contrast. Compared to the old NEC1970NX monitor, which is now the second, the eyes are much more tired. If you set the eye rest mode, then the colors are unnaturally yellow and the ability to adjust the color balance is lost.
The image is sharp, even excessively, pixels are noticeable in the letters. (I set it up several times through the control panel). The colors do not stand up to criticism, even home photos should not be edited with them.
A separate disappointment is the driver: very small letters and icons compared to the old monitor 1280 * 1020 (at the new resolution 1920 * 1080, the height is almost the same). If you set a large font in windows, everything becomes too large. This is annoying.

What we liked

Comes with an HDMI cable. Neat assembly. No highlights. The stand takes up quite a bit of table space and sways less than its predecessor s24d390hl. External power supply - no need to think about whether the power supply unit will pull the system unit.

What did not like

When playing dynamic videos from YouTube, strong artifacts (horizontal lines) appear on faces

What did not like

Got a defective one: light in the corner. Disgusting monitor modes. Periodically produces a grainy picture.

What we liked

Good picture, optimal size, stylish design, HDMI cable included.

What did not like

1) When the computer is off, the screen also turns off, but the blue LED continues to blink annoyingly at the bottom right. It's good that it's not bright. Why Samsung did not make the option to turn off the blinking of the LED in the settings menu, I do not know - after all, in the settings you can also configure the on / off of the LED when the screen is on.
2) The rightmost area (from top to bottom) of the screen in my copy is slightly colder in color than the rest of the space. But it doesn't get in the way.
3) Black crush (the disappearance of the darkest shades and merging them into one black porridge) is quite noticeable.
4) Dark shades are quite dark (in dark places of computer games, the surrounding space is not very visible), I even use the lightest gamut (not brightness!) Of the three available in the monitor settings menu.

What we liked

1) Bright, juicy colors (especially after my past TN). 2) My copy did not have any special irregularities in the illumination. 3) Everything was fine with my copy with white balance and colors, I didn't need to manually tweak the RGB colors. 4) Beautiful stand, translucent blue at the bottom and black plastic in front.

What did not like

there is a small detail that may become unpleasant for someone. You bought a monitor so happy and you want to watch a cool movie tonight. The set contains only an hdmi cable, and such an input may not be supported in a video card. Of course, you can buy another cable, but if it is not there, the evening will be ruined + a waste of time to buy another cable.

What we liked

An excellent monitor in its price, it stands very firmly on the leg, a convenient headphone jack on the back of the lid, I was pleased with the settings button. As for the "graininess", everything is easily adjusted, the eyes get tired just like with any other monitor, you just need to get used to it. in milliseconds, etc. I can't tell, I took it for work in graphic editors, it copes perfectly well. Colors, contrast, brightness - everything is ok. There were no problems with the drivers, I generally disagree with almost all negative reviews on this model, you just need to take a little bit and tweak it. I didn't use the hdmi socket.

What did not like

The button for setting and navigating the menu is strange, located at the back and looks more like a joystick. But you only have to set up the monitor once, there is no need to use the joystick regularly.

What we liked

Color rendering, design, size. The presence of HDMI and audio input 3.5 mm. There is no PWM (pencil test), which is a huge plus and a decisive factor when buying. And the dollar rate jumped 2 times, and the monitor went up one and a half times, which is also an important factor.

FRC

Frame rate control (FRC) is a technique that allows pixels to display more shades of color. By quickly cycling between different color shades, the illusion of a new intermediate color shade is created. For example, using FRC, a 6-bit matrix of the screen is capable of displaying the typical 16.7 million colors of an 8-bit matrix instead of the standard 262200 colors. There are various FRC algorithms.

Appearance

All outer surfaces of the case and the stand have a mirror-smooth (and unstable to scratches, which are especially noticeable on black elements) surface with more or less pronounced curvature ("smooth lines of the case"). The stand and bezel of the screen are made of transparent tinted polycarbonate, while the blue-green tint of the bezel is more pronounced. The surface of the matrix is black and matte.

Touch buttons (capacitive). Button captions are placed on the frontal surface of the frame, they are large enough and contrasting. You need to touch in the area of \ u200b \ u200bthe icons. A status indicator is located to the right of the power button on the front plane.

The power and interface connectors are located in a shallow recess on the rear panel and are oriented towards the rear. Also on the back you can find a Kensington lock slot.

The monitor is equipped with an external relatively small and lightweight power adapter.

The bottom of the stand is reinforced with numerous stiffeners. Square rubber feet (six) on the bottom of the stand base protect the table surface from scratches and prevent the monitor from sliding on smooth surfaces. The relatively large base area provides the monitor with good stability, and since the base on top is almost flat and almost horizontal, the area occupied by the monitor on the table is not completely excluded from the workspace. The hinge in the articulation of the upper part of the stand with the screen unit allows the screen unit to tilt slightly forward and more backward.

The monitor is packed in a flat box with a recognizable corporate design. The box has a slotted handle on top for easy transport of the purchased monitor. This solution does not look reliable, but the box with the monitor is light, and if you do not jump with it in your hand, the handle will not come out.

Commutation

The monitor is equipped with two video inputs: HDMI and VGA. In addition to manual input selection, there is a switchable mode with automatic search for an active connection.

The HDMI input is capable of accepting digital audio signals (PCM stereo only) that are output after conversion to analogue via the 3.5mm minijack jack. An external powered speaker or headphones can be connected to this jack. The power of the headphone output was enough for the volume in 32-ohm headphones to be sufficient, and even with a large margin. The sound quality in the headphones is, in principle, not bad - the sound is quite clear, all frequencies are reproduced, no noise is heard in the pauses.

Menu, localization and management

The power indicator glows blue during operation, in standby mode - blinks blue and does not light up if the monitor is conventionally turned off. If the monitor is in working mode and there is no menu on the screen, then pressing any button displays a quick access menu of four items - calling the main menu, turning on / off game mode, going to volume control and switching input.

The menu is relatively large. On the right side of the menu, a contextual hint is displayed, which, oddly enough, is quite relevant. When adjusting the image, the menu remains on the screen, which slightly interferes with the assessment of the changes being made. You can turn off the low transparency of the background, set a timeout for automatic exit from the menu, and set the repeat mode while holding the button. Also, the menu can be moved horizontally and vertically, but there is no point in this, since in the initial position, the hint icons on the functions of the buttons on the screen are approximately opposite the real buttons, which is convenient. There is a shutdown timer (1-23 hours).

There is a Russian version of the OSD.

The Cyrillic font of the menu is smooth and readable. The quality of translation of menu labels into Russian is good. On the CD-ROM that comes with the kit, we found the user manuals in the form of PDF files (the Russian version is present). In addition, this disc contains a monitor driver (INF and CAT files) and a color correction profile (ICM). On the company's website in the support section, we found manuals and drivers.

Image

There are settings Brightness, Contrast and Definition... List MagicBright- these are two preset profiles with combinations Brightness/Contrast, one custom, and when selecting a profile Auto contrast most settings are locked, and dynamic brightness control is enabled (brightness up for bright scenes and down for dark scenes).

A pre-installed profile for games is separately taken out, which does not differ from other profiles in anything special. Parameter Response time responsible for the matrix overclocking modes. It is possible to select the brightness range for HDMI connection. Function MagicUpscale with two modes gives the image extra clarity, but also increases the visibility of compression artifacts. On the page Colour you can choose one of the preset color temperature profiles or adjust the gain of red, green and blue colors yourself. Customization Gamma determines the current profile of gamma correction.

There are two modes of geometric transformation: you can either keep the original proportions of the image ( Auto), fitting it into the screen to the nearest borders (in practice, up to horizontal, and aspect ratios are counted by pixels, so a 4: 3 PAL or NTSC picture is slightly distorted), or forcibly stretching to full screen ( Wide). For each input separately, you can enable the mode AV, in which the picture is slightly enlarged so that along the perimeter it goes beyond the boundaries of the display area.

With a VGA connection, the automatic adjustment to the parameters of the VGA signal is performed quickly and correctly, and on the gray scale shades from 0 to 255 differ. Both with VGA and HDMI connections (or rather, in our case, via DVI using an adapter cable) Supports resolutions up to 1920 × 1080 pixels at 60 fps inclusive. Interpolation of low resolutions to matrix resolution is performed without artifacts. In the mode of 1920 by 1080 pixels, the brightness and color clarity are maximum possible, there is no additional emphasis on the outlines (if the setting Definition do not rise above 51). There is no "crystalline" effect (microscopic variation in brightness). The matte surface of the matrix allows you to work with comfort in the case of a typical arrangement of the monitor, user and luminaires in the room.

Cinema modes were tested using an HDMI connection. The monitor does not accept 576i and 480i interlaced signals, and 1080i signals are output in margin mode, without advanced progressive conversion. The monitor supports 576p, 480p, 720p, and 1080p, but does not support 1080p @ 24fps. Subtle gradations of shades differ in both highlights and shadows. Brightness and color definitions are very high and are determined only by the resolution of the input signal. In 1080p mode, the picture is displayed 1: 1 without any interpolation. When scaling, artifacts do not appear, even partial smoothing of the contours is performed.

LCD matrix testing

Micrographs of the matrix

A clear image of the pixel structure due to the matte surface cannot be obtained, however, if desired, in the fragment below, corresponding to four pixels, you can see the subpixel division into two areas and the shape of these areas, characteristic of PLS (IPS version from Samsung):

Focusing on the surface of the screen revealed chaotically located micro-defects of the surface, which are responsible for the matte properties themselves:

The grain of these defects is several times smaller than the size of subpixels, therefore, focusing on microdefects and "jumping" of focus across subpixels when changing the angle of view are weak, because of this, there is no "crystal" effect.

Color quality assessment

To assess the nature of the increase in brightness on a gray scale, we measured the brightness of 17 shades of gray at various values of the parameter Gamma... The graph below shows the obtained gamma curves (in the captions, the number in brackets is the exponent of the approximating power function):

The real gamma curve is closest to the standard at Mode3, so further we measured the brightness of 256 shades of gray (from 0, 0, 0 to 255, 255, 255) at this very value. Note that the setting Contrast we set it to 70, because when this value was exceeded, the gamma curve had a noticeable inflection in the light part. The graph below shows the increase (not an absolute value!) Of brightness between adjacent semitones:

The growth of the increase in brightness is on average more or less uniform, and almost every next shade is significantly brighter than the previous one. The increase in the brightness of shades in the dark area is present, although not very uniform:

The approximation of the obtained gamma curve gave the indicator 2,24 , which is close to the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the approximating power function practically coincides with the real gamma curve:

To assess the quality of color rendition, we used the i1Pro 2 and.

The color gamut differs slightly from sRGB:

However, the deviations of the coordinates of the primary colors from the sRGB vertices are not very large, so visually the colors on this monitor have natural saturation. Below is the spectrum for the white field (white line) superimposed on the spectra of the red, green and blue fields (lines of the corresponding colors).

This spectrum with a relatively narrow peak in blue and with wide humps of green and red is typical for monitors that use white LED backlighting with a blue emitter and yellow phosphor. The color rendition even when choosing the best of the preset options is slightly different from the standard, so we tried to manually correct the colors by adjusting the gain of the three primary colors. The graphs below show the color temperature at different parts of the gray scale and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (parameter ΔE) in the case of a profile Norm. in the original version and after manual correction:

The range closest to black can be ignored, since the color rendition is not so important in it, and the error in measuring the color characteristics is high. Manual override ( Cr. = 49, Zel. = 42, Syn.= 50) significantly improved color rendering, at least the white point approached 6500 K even more and ΔE became less than 3 throughout the significant part of the gray scale.

Measurement of uniformity of black and white fields, brightness and power consumption

Brightness measurements were taken at 25 points on the screen, spaced 1/6 of the width and height of the screen (screen borders not included). The contrast was calculated as the ratio of the brightness of the fields at the measured points.

White uniformity is good, and black uniformity, and as a result, contrast is noticeably worse. The contrast is noticeably higher than typical for an IPS matrix. The photo below gives an idea of the distribution of the brightness of the black field over the screen area:

When the mode is turned on Auto contrast the established contrast formally increases to infinity, since the backlight is simply turned off on a black field in full screen (and white areas the size of a mouse cursor are not enough to turn it on). The graph below shows how the brightness (vertical axis) increases when you switch from a black field (the backlight is off) to white.

The backlight immediately turns on to a certain level, remains unchanged for about 50 ms, and then gradually and slightly nonlinearly increases to the maximum value. There is little practical use for this function, but the manufacturer can write the word Mega with infinity icon.

Brightness of the white field in the center of the screen and power consumption from the mains:

In standby mode, the monitor consumes 0,3 Watt off - 0,2 Tue

When decreasing the parameter Brightness only the brightness of the backlight changes, i.e. without compromising image quality (the contrast and the number of distinguishable gradations are preserved), the monitor brightness can be changed over a wide range, which allows you to work comfortably and watch movies both in a lit and in a dark room. At any brightness level, there is no backlight modulation up to 100 kHz, which means no flicker at all.

Determining the response time and output latency

Response time depends on setting value Response time, which controls the matrix overclocking. There are three steps of adjustment. The graph below shows how the turn-on and turn-off times change with the transition black-white-black (bars incl. and off), as well as the average total time for transitions between some semitones (columns GTG):

The optimal value from our point of view is the last step, since even at maximum overclocking, artifacts are hardly noticeable.

The CRT monitor we used to determine the output latency has finally given up its ghost. Therefore, now we will use an alternative option for determining the total output delay from switching the video buffer pages to the start of displaying the image on the screen. Assuming frame sync is on, the average output latency will include the average latency for the video buffer output, which at 60Hz frame rate is approximately 8ms.

In this case, with synchronization turned on, we got approximately 12 ms for both types of connection. From a practical point of view, the image can be considered to be displayed without delay.

Measurement of viewing angles

To find out how the brightness of the screen changes when you deviate from the perpendicular to the screen, we carried out a series of measurements of the brightness of black, white and grayscale in the center of the screen over a wide range of angles, tilting the sensor axis in the vertical, horizontal and diagonal (from corner to corner) directions.

In the vertical planeIn the horizontal plane
DiagonallyThe brightness of the black box as a percentage of the maximum brightness of the white box
Contrast

Decrease the brightness by 50% of the maximum value:

Note a gradual decrease in brightness when deviating from the perpendicular to the screen in the horizontal direction, while the graphs do not intersect in the entire range of measured angles. The brightness drops slightly faster when deflected in the vertical direction. With a deviation in the diagonal direction, the behavior of the brightness of the shades has an intermediate character between the vertical and horizontal directions, with the exception of the brightness of the black field, which begins to increase sharply already at 20-30 ° deviation from the perpendicular to the screen. If you sit at a distance of 50-60 cm from the screen, then the black field in the corners will be noticeably lighter than in the center, however, remaining approximately neutral-gray in shade. Contrast in the range of angles of ± 82 ° for two directions is much higher than 10: 1, and only for the diagonal direction it is on average lower and on one diagonal drops beyond the 10: 1 mark at 70 °.

To quantify the change in color rendition, we carried out colorimetric measurements for white, gray (127, 127, 127), red, green and blue, as well as light red, light green and light blue fields in full screen using a setting similar to that that was used in the previous test. The measurements were carried out in the range of angles from 0 ° (the sensor is directed perpendicular to the screen) to 80 ° with a step of 5 °. The obtained values of the intensities were recalculated in ΔE relative to the measurement of each field at the perpendicular position of the sensor relative to the screen. The results are presented below:

As a reference point, you can select a deviation of 45 °, which may be relevant in the case, for example, if the image on the screen is viewed by two people at the same time. The criterion for maintaining the correctness of colors can be considered a value of ΔE less than 3.

From the graphs it follows that with a horizontal and diagonal deviation of 45 degrees, the delta E is less or not much higher than 3 for all tested shades. This color stability is one of the main advantages of PLS-type matrices (and, of course, IPS).

conclusions

The Samsung S24D390HL monitor is worth buying if you like its tinted transparent stand and screen bezel design. However, in addition to the design, the owner of this device receives a PLS matrix with good, especially after calibration, color rendering, which will also attract those who value not only appearance. In general, the monitor can be considered universal, suitable for performing typical office work, non-professional work with graphics, watching movies and playing games, including dynamic ones.

Advantages:

  • Original design
  • Good color quality
  • Flicker-free backlight
  • There is a mode with matrix overclocking
