The Birth of Columbia Sportswear

Columbia Sportswear's journey began in 1937, when Gert's parents, Paul and Marie Lamfrom, emigrated from Nazi Germany and settled in Portland. Gert was 13 years old and didn't even speak English. In Germany, Paul Lamfrom owned one of the largest clothing factories, but he managed to take less than ten dollars to America: the Nazis forbade taking large sums with him.

In Portland, a cousin lent Paul money to buy a hat distributor, Rosenfeld Hat Co. First, the new owner changed the sign to Columbia Hat Company - in honor of the nearby river. And then, seeing the poor quality of the supplied hats, he turned own production clothing, fishing equipment and shirts.

In 1948, the mature Gert married Neil Boyle, a student at the University of Arizona, who soon joined the family business, and after the death of Paul Lamfrom, he headed it. Gert spent all her time and energy on her children - Tim, her first-born, and two daughters, Katie and Sally. But Gert liked to sew. One day she came up with the first Columbia fishing jacket with many additional pockets. Under the management of Neil Boyle, the company grew steadily, and by 1970 its annual turnover reached $800,000. But not everything was rosy. Neil Boyle took out a $150,000 loan through a small business loan program using his own home, Marie Lamfrom's home, and even his health insurance as collateral. And three months later he had a heart attack: at the age of 47 he died.

The next day, the company's phones were red hot: suppliers and distributors were convinced that Columbia, too, would die, and the bank was ready to withdraw its line of credit. It was then that Gert Boyle realized that she would have to take matters into her own hands.

At the time of Neal's death, Columbia's annual sales were $650,000. And all this farming passed into the hands of Gertrude Boyle. The beginning was difficult. Gert had no experience. And many decisions had to be made. At first, Gertrude made many mistakes that worsened the company's position.

Everything literally fell apart. Sales were falling. At the same time, problems with personnel began: trade unions held industrial strikes three times. Finally, in 1972, the bank manager said sternly: “You will have to sell the company.” The buyer was found quite quickly and at the very first negotiations stated: “I don’t need either your building or your product. Only the company and the brand. I'm willing to pay $1,400 for this. Just please, without any debts.” The impulsive Gert Boyle did not hesitate for a second: “Get out!” For a thousand bucks, I’m ready to run this damn company myself!”

And gradually Columbia began to emerge from the crisis. Gert abandoned private orders, launched the production of standard models, and refocused on large buyers. And Tim Boyle, who had not yet graduated from college, began to travel to all industry exhibitions and conferences in search of useful contacts. Fashion also helped: if in the 60s people wore nothing but suits and dresses, then in the 70s it was already quite decent to appear in public in sports or light clothing. So, after a few years, Columbia returned to positive profits.

In the 1980s, the nightmare ended. There was no need to worry about survival, but to think about the further development of the company associated with its growth. True, it is worth noting that this became possible largely thanks to several successful moves by the company itself, taken at this time. In particular, the Bugaboo jacket was presented. It was a revolution for Columbia. The company's most popular product in the 1980s. Firstly, Bugaboo was accessible to most people because it was not expensive at all. Secondly, it now has a detachable lining, thanks to which you can wear the jacket completely calmly, both in cold weather and in autumn. Finally, Bugaboo had a zipper of unprecedented quality.

In 1984, an epochal event took place for Columbia. Advertising agency Borders, Perrin Norrander developed a creative advertising campaign for Columbia that is still used today. It was then that the famous Mother Boyle was born. Actually, the idea is that in a series of videos we see the head of Columbia, Tim Boyle, at work. At this moment, one or another event occurs, the initiator of which is his mother. For example, in one of the popular videos, Tim is talking about something at a board meeting when Gert appears, stabbing him in the neck with a dart containing sleeping pills. Tim wakes up on the mountain wearing a Columbia jacket. The last thing he sees is his mother flying away in a helicopter. This is exactly how Mother Boyle tests new Columbia developments.

The campaign became extremely successful around the world. And for some time now these videos can be seen on Russian television.
