What does it mean to show your index finger? Show the finger: gestures in culture

On Wahhabi resources you can often read demagoguery about the “Shiite idol-alama,” that is, the symbol of the hand that is used in Shiite ceremonies, especially in everything related to mourning for Imam Hussein (A).

"Alam" looks like this:

That is, it is a hand with an open palm, which symbolizes the severed hands of Abulfazl Abbas - the hero of Karbala and the brother of Imam Hussein (A). According to another interpretation, five fingers of the hand mean five " ashabi l-kisa" - "people under the cloak", purified by complete purification (Muhammad, Fatima, Ali, Hassan and Hussein, peace be upon them).

In one of the Wahhabi articles we read the following: “The word “alam” is derived from the Turkic al (əl) - “hand”. Alam became widespread among Azerbaijani Turks during the reign of the Shiite Safavid dynasty. Some Shiite preachers present the name alam as a derivative of the Arabic علامة “alamyat”, which means “symbol” or “sign”. Based on the fact that Alam is used as a symbol in Shiism, this version at first glance looks plausible, but this is not true, since among the Shiite Arabs themselves, Alam is not called “Alamyat”, but is called the “Palm of Abbas” or “Hand of Fatima” “As for the word (ألم) “alaam” itself, in Arabic it does not mean “symbol” or “sign”, but means “pain” or “suffering.”

In fact, “Alam” comes from the Arabic “Alam” (علم) with “Ayn”, which means “flag”, “banner” (in Farsi it will be the same). This origin of the name is obvious, since the alam is used as a banner in mourning ceremonies.

“The origin of the alam is connected both with the ancient lunar goddess of the Phoenicians Tanit, whom the ancient Phoenicians considered the patroness of the city of Carthage, her symbol was the image of an open right palm, and with Buddhism, where the alam is a universal sign of protection. Alam is used by Buddhists as a symbol and protective amulet, which is resorted to against the evil eye and damage, is called the “Hand of Buddha”. Occupies special place in the Dharmachakra - the Buddha's mudra of teaching and protection. In addition, Alam is widely used in Judaism, although it is known that the Jews borrowed it from the ancient Phoenicians. It is worth noting that in Judaism alam is called “khamsa” (in Hebrew חמסה), and “khamsa” in turn in languages Semitic group means “five”, in modern Hebrew it is “hamisha”.

Thanks to the Wahhabis for the excursion into the history of religions: along with the “lunar goddess of the Phoenicians Tanit” and “Dharmachakra” they could also mention the Aztecs and Incas, who also had a similar symbol, despite being separated from the Shiites by thousands of kilometers of ocean.

In fact, everything here is much more prosaic: people in all places and at all times tend to use approximately similar symbols, the set of which is quite limited. Since the palm, as they say, is “always at hand,” many religions used it in their symbolism, and this does not say anything about any borrowing.

Otherwise, we would have to accuse the “Salafis” themselves of idolatry because of their beloved finger, which is demonstrated in all forms and angles. However, stretched upward forefinger- this is one of the main symbols of Freemasonry, which, in turn, borrowed it from ancient pagan religions, where this finger symbolized a person’s connection with “ higher powers" Also, in black magic rituals, Satan is often depicted with his finger raised up, as can be seen in the photo below.

From a book on Masonic symbols - an extended index finger:

Statue of George Washington - the first American Freemason president:

Position of the statue figure in the Satan pose:

Worship of Satan, sitting with his index finger raised up:

Raised Buddha finger:

Plato's raised finger in Raphael's painting. Symbolizes pagan wisdom and magical connection with higher powers :

Raised finger in the Papal Sinkstine Chapel:

Isn't it similar?

Of course, “Salafis” will say that the raised finger only symbolizes monotheism (that God is one) and has only an external resemblance to Masonic and other fingers. But in the same way we will say that the alam symbolizes the hands of Abbas and has a purely formal similarity with the symbols of the palms used in other religions.

Or let's take another common symbol, which many consider inextricably linked with Islam - crescent . The crescent moon is not used by Shiites and occurs only among Ahlu Sunna wal Jama'ah, who borrowed it from Christians, who, in turn, from pagan religions. There are no hadiths about the crescent symbol, nor evidence of its use in the first centuries of Islam.

So, “bidaat”, “idol”, “pagan sign”? Call it what you want, if you want, like the Wahhabis, to practice demagoguery:

The crescent moon was printed on pagan coins Turkic Khaganate, then was a symbol of the Persian Sassanid Empire and the coat of arms of the city of Constantinople - the capital of the Christian empire. Most likely, it was after the conquest of Constantinople by the Sunni Turks that the crescent entered Sunni Islam and became its symbol.

Crescent on the royal winged crown of the Sassanids:

And if you want to show off your erudition, you can mention the crescent moon in the iconography of Hinduism - Shiva wears it in his hair:

In Egypt, the solar disk with the horned Moon, or located between the horns of a bull (cow), meant the divine unity of two in one, common solar-lunar gods and the secret marriage of divine couples.

Among the ancient Sumerians, the crescent moon was an attribute of the Babylonian moon god Sin - the ship on which he sailed across the vast expanses of space.

Crescent on an ancient Sumerian coin:

Here the king dedicates his daughter to the goddess. The crescent symbolizes the god Sin, the sun symbolizes the sun god Shamash:

Before you use any finger shape in conversation, think about what it might mean. This is important for your own safety. In every country, there are many various options interpretation of such symbols. It depends on the history of the country and on religion, and on the traditions that have developed over the years. The gesture: three fingers up can be equally likely to be a greeting or an insult.

What does the "three fingers up" gesture mean?

In gestures triplets It is important to know, which fingers are raised up?. So, if three fingers are pointing upward in order, starting with the thumb, then the meaning of this sign is as follows:

  1. It is used as a greeting by Serbs in the nineteenth century;
  2. Three fingers symbolize the Holy Trinity and, accordingly, Orthodoxy;
  3. In paganism, it is a symbol of fidelity;
  4. Nazis different countries, used it as a greeting and as an oath of allegiance.

In the case when raised up average, nameless fingers and little finger, and the thumb and index finger are folded into a ring:

  • For Americans and most people in other countries, it means that everything is fine;
  • In Japan it is a symbol of money.

Symbol with sticking out index And average fingers and little fingers has a sexual connotation and primarily symbolizes the superiority of the person showing and the desire to humiliate the opponent.

Shaka gesture: what is it?

This symbol is based on two protruding fingers:

  1. Big;
  2. Little finger.

According to one legend, this sign appeared as a result of an accident with a Hawaiian youth who lost all the fingers on his right hand, except for these two. When meeting people he knew, he greeted them by raising his palm with outstretched fingers. And so the symbol spread to other areas of the globe.

In the historical homeland of this symbol, it was given the meaning of greeting and an invitation to relax, step away from the hustle and bustle, and look around. By showing this symbol, they seem to tell us that everything is fine.

In other countries, the interpretations are different:

  • In the territory former USSR the gesture was used as an offer to drink strong drinks;
  • If thumb put to the lips - this indicates a desire to take drugs;
  • With your thumb leaning against your ear, the interlocutor wants or plans to call you.

Thus, this gesture does not carry any special mystical background, however, it can also be perceived ambiguously, like all others.

Gesture: two fingers raised up

When talking about this symbol, most often we mean a sign in the form English letter V. This gesture was first used by the leader of England after the victory over fascism. As a result, the sign became widespread throughout the world as a symbol of undeniable victory.

However, in addition to this common meaning, there are others:

  1. In countries such as Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, when this sign is shown with the palm facing the interlocutor back side, he is considered unfriendly and even rude;
  2. It has the meaning of the number “2” or the Latin “5”;
  3. Used for greeting;
  4. It has become often used when a person rejoices at his achievements and shares his joy with others.

There is a legend about the origin of this sign, according to which, during the Hundred Years' War between the British and the French, two of these fingers were cut off for prisoners of war in Great Britain, depriving them of the opportunity to work. In response, before the battle, the British tried in every possible way to show this symbol to the enemy, demonstrating that they were healthy and could defeat the French army.

However, there is an opinion that this could not have happened in reality, since the French did not take prisoners, and the story itself was composed in the eighties of the twentieth century.

Kukish: meaning in different countries

The most common in our country is the figure of three fingers in the form blew or fig. Its meaning is clear to all of us. However, in other countries you should not always use this sign as a last resort argument in a dispute, since you can not only offend your interlocutor, but also put yourself in an awkward position:

  1. Germans perceive this sign as an invitation to intimacy;
  2. Eastern countries, for example, Japan or China, consider it a designation of the phallus;
  3. The Hindus will perceive him as a threat from you;
  4. But in Brazil and Portugal, according to beliefs, this symbol brings good luck and protects from evil spirits.

Protruding fingers - index and little fingers (goat)

The fingers sticking out in this design have a versatile interpretation; it has the colloquial name “goat”. IN different times and in different territories this sign was prescribed different properties:

  • This gesture was often used in the Soviet Union crime bosses to indicate one's superiority over other people. It came from prison and was considered indecent and humiliating;
  • In rock culture, this symbol was first used by the singer Dio. He spotted this variation of fingers from his grandmother, who thus drove away the unfavorable influence of suspicious people from her family and home. Rockers picked it up and in the subculture this gesture became entrenched as approval of the artist’s activities;
  • This sign also has a mystical meaning. In ancient times, in the territories of Europe and Asia, amulets with this sign were often worn, hoping that it would protect them from the evil eye or bad influence;
  • Even in more ancient times, this type of finger placement was used by Greek and Roman orators. In their opinion, it had a great impact on the audience and was used when it was necessary to express an important thought and partly instill it in the minds of those listening;
  • In iconography, gesture is used to convey direct speech, the purpose of which is to communicate the good news;
  • In sign language translation in Russian, the gesture means the letter “Y”, in American it means a declaration of love;
  • In sports, it is used to transmit special signals to teammates, most often used in baseball.

Thus, the goat sign is versatile and has many meanings. Unfortunately, many people are not well educated in this area and, seeing such a gesture, may perceive it from an offensive or negative side.

Thus, in order to better understand the interlocutor, look at his hands. The gestures with which he appeals can bring you quite a lot of information that a person will not say anything about out loud.

Be careful when using any non-verbal signs, since the seemingly harmless “three fingers up” gesture can bring you a lot of trouble if it is misunderstood by your interlocutor.

Regarding the index finger in Islam (added!)
(Admonition for those with intelligence - read to the end without rushing!)

Before moving on to this controversial issue (each scientist has his own proposal!), please read the direct hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), where there is not even a hint of lifting or twirling a finger during prayer, and not the dubious hadiths “from such and such”:

1) It is reported from the words of Abdullah, who said: “While performing prayer behind the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), we said: “Peace be to Allah! Peace be upon such and such!..” And the Prophet (may the Almighty bless him and greet him) once told us: “Allah He is the World. When you sit during prayer, say: “Salutations to Allah, as well as prayers and everything beautiful. Peace be upon you, Prophet, the mercy of Allah and His grace! Peace be upon us and the righteous servants of Allah. “When one of you says these words, they affect every righteous servant of Allah in heaven and earth. “I testify that there is no god but Allah and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. “Then the one who said this can make the best requests he wishes.”(Muslim).

3) Muslim reported from the words of Ibn Abbas (ra) how the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught them tashahhud without mentioning the use of the index finger!

4) Imam Malik reported from the words of Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abd al-Qari: “I heard Umar ibn al-Khattab, being in the department, teaching people tashuhhud...” and conveys the text of tashahhud without using the index finger!

5) Ibn Masud said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught me tashahhuda - my palm between his palms. He taught me it like a surah from the Koran...” Then he told the same tashahhud that was told by the previous ones without using the index finger” (Muslim).

6) In Ahmad's version it is reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of the Almighty be upon him) taught him tashahhud and ordered him to teach people, also without a finger.

7) Ibn Abbas said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught us tashahhud just as he taught us any surah from the Koran. He said: “Greetings, blessings, blessings and all that is beautiful go to Allah. Peace be upon you, Prophet, the mercy of Allah and His grace! Peace be upon us and the fit servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger." without mentioning the index finger (Muslim).

8) In the retelling of Ibn Rumkh it is said: “... as if he taught us the Koran ...”, also without a finger (Muslim).

9) Khattan Ibn Abdullah Al-Rakashiya said: “Once I prayed with Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari….” and quotes the words of Abu Mussa on how to correctly read tashuhhud without mentioning the movement of the index finger” (Muslim).

10) This judgment is supported by the hadith of Alqama that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took him by the hands and taught tashahhud in prayer without mentioning the index finger while reading tashahhud (Ahmad, Abu Dawud, ad-Darakutni) .

11) It is reported that Ibn Masud (ra) said that one day the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned to them and said: “When one of you performs prayer, let him say: “Greetings, prayers and good deeds are addressed to Allah! Peace be upon you, prophet, mercy and blessings of Allah! Peace to us and all the righteous servants of Allah! I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.” Then he can turn to Allah with the supplication that pleases him most” and there is no mention of raising or twitching the index finger (al-Bukhari, Muslim).

12) There are also many transmitters with the same isnad of the hadith: “Abu Bakr Ibn Abu Shaiba reported to us,” “Abu Osama reported to us,” “Said Ibn Abu Aruba reported to us,” “Abu Ghassan Al Masmai reported to us,” “Jarir reported to us.” from Suleiman Al-Taymiyyah”, “Muaz Ibn Hisham told us”, etc. and so on. – none of them contain any indication of moving the index finger during tashahhud!!!

Now read this verse carefully: “We haven’t sent something like this before you

messenger or prophet so that the devil does not throw his own into his reading when he read the revelation..."(22:52) and we see that Shaitan is capable of many things - to show people not only various kinds of hallucinations, but also to insert his words into people’s speech, so that people say the devil’s clues as if they were their own words, etc. and so on.

Let me move on to the topic - it is very difficult for people to abandon deeply rooted customs, break old views, their mentality and change. Therefore, all reformers, starting with the prophets, experienced great difficulty in forcing people to abandon false beliefs and customs.

IN Lately Muslims are increasingly seen showing their index finger right hand other Muslims when meeting or moving the index finger during prayer. The Internet was also flooded with photographs of Muslims photographed with their right index finger raised. This is mainly done by those people who consider themselves Salafists and admirers of Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab. It is these Wahhabis who behave inappropriately during prayer, violating the Koran and Sunnah: they twitch, turn to the sides, scratch different places, constantly making unnecessary movements, constantly yawning, covering their mouth with their hands...! Allah’s command to be “humble in prayer” does not reach their heads! They place the words of their senile scientists above the words of Allah and His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Allah Azza wa Jalla said: “Verily, prosperous are the believers who are humble during their prayers.”(23:1-2) and “Protect the prayers, and especially the middle (afternoon) prayer. And stand before Allah humbly."(2:238). Allah Tagala said: “Woe to those who pray, who are careless in their prayers, who are hypocrites.”(107:4-6). Allah Tagala said: “Call upon your Lord humbly and submissively. Verily, He does not love those who transgress." (7:55). “The very first thing that will be taken away from this community is humility in prayer (khushu), so that there will not be a single person who reads prayer with humility.” The last words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were: “Be attentive to prayer, be attentive to prayer, fear Allah in the relationship of your slaves and subordinates”! The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “People who look up in prayer must give it up, otherwise it will not come back to them.” Aisha (Ra) says: “I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the habit of looking around during prayer. He said: “It is Satan who takes something from a person’s prayer.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The worst thief is the one who steals from his prayer. When a person does not make his hand and sajda completely or when he does not straighten his back either in his hand or in sazda.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Verily, on the Day of Resurrection, the servant of Allah will be reckoned with for his prayers, and if they are good, he will succeed and achieve what he wants, and if they turn out to be bad, he will fail and suffer a loss.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah is attentive to a person in prayer until he turns his attention somewhere. When a slave turns away his attention, Allah turns away from him.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Under no circumstances turn around during prayer, for such turns are disastrous, and if you must turn around, then let it be during voluntary and not obligatory prayer.”
People on the Internet often asked me about these interesting personalities in this position with the index finger. I ANSWER EVERYONE - THIS IS PURE “SHOW OFF”!!! And it has nothing to do with Islam!!! There are hadiths indicating that Jews greeted each other in this way. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever tries to be like representatives of other religions is not one of us!” This is “hidden shirk” - “riya”, performing deeds for the sake of someone other than Allah. This behavior is a great sin. “Allah will dishonor the one who tells and show off the one who does something for others to see.” (Al-Bukhari, Muslim).

Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah will defame the one who tells (people about his good deeds), and will expose the one who will (worship Him) to others." (al Bukhari).

Once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “What I am most afraid of is that you will fall into minor shirk.” The companions asked: “What is small shirk, O Messenger of Allah?” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied: “Riya, i.e. hypocrisy. When on the Day of Judgment people are given rewards for their deeds in earthly life, Allah Almighty will say to the hypocrites (ahli riya): “Go to those before whom you showed off your deeds! Let’s see if you get any reward from them?” (Ahmad, 5,428-429).
Almost all those people who take pictures with their index finger and move their fingers in prayer explain their actions by saying that they want to show the Unity of Allah Almighty with their index finger! There are several contradictory hadiths from “so-and-so” that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did this during prayer. But they are all dubious and contradict Monotheism itself. To avoid fitnah, I do not cite these hadiths. There is also a dubious hadith, which states that the index finger raised during tashahhud acts on the shaitan like an iron spear. But think for yourself, why on earth would some finger frighten the shaitan if the shaitan feels great during the entire prayer (except for the azan and iqama) and tries to mislead everyone by standing between a person and his soul: “Truly, Shaitan (penetrates) into a person, spreading throughout him like blood, and, truly, I was afraid that he would be able to plant something (bad) in your hearts!” (Al-Bukhari, Muslim). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When the call to prayer is pronounced, the shaitan retreats, noisily emitting gases so as not to hear this call, and when the call ends, he approaches again. And he retreats during the iqama, and when the announcement of the beginning of the prayer ends, he again approaches to stand between the person and his heart and inspire him: “Remember this and that,” which he did not even think about (before prayer, and he does this), so that a person remains (in a similar) position, not knowing how many (rakats) of prayer he has performed." (Al-Bukhari, Muslim).

When people cite these contradictory and dubious hadiths, they forget the most important truth in prayer - to be humble and not make unnecessary movements during prayer! Shaitan is always busy trying to turn a person away from any good deed.
It is appropriate for a servant of Allah to humbly perform dua and his actions, not forgetting that he is always in the presence of his Lord. People also forget about the shaitan, what knowledge he has and what miracles he can show people in order to lead them astray from the path of truth - just the shaitan can show to the human eye the illusion of actions that do not exist in nature or instill in him thoughts about the existence of such movements! People often forget how Iblis taught the angels and taught them before he was banished! Therefore, everyone should not blindly follow dubious hadiths, open your eyes and learn to distinguish lies from truth, because Allah gave us “reason,” so use this reason so as not to get lost behind the instigations of the shaitan.
Now I turn again to the inconsistency of the actions of some Muslims who claim that they are pointing and proving Monotheism with their index finger.
We often forget that in our body there is a small piece of meat where our faith is stored - iman. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Truly, there is a piece of flesh in the body, which, being good, makes the whole body good, and when it becomes unusable, it spoils the whole body, and, verily, this is the heart.” (Muslim, Bukhari, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi, Nasai, Ibn Majah). Allah Almighty Azza wa Jalla said: “... But Allah instilled in you the love of faith, and presented it as beautiful to your hearts, and made unbelief, wickedness and disobedience hateful to you. Such are those who follow the right path through the mercy and mercy of Allah. Allah is Knowing, Wise” (49:7,8). Allah Almighty knows all our inner impulses and it is impossible to hide a single intention or thought from Him. A person should never forget that all the plans of his heart are open to Allah. He knows everything, hears and sees everything. Lack of sincerity leads a person to such frivolity as exchanging Allah's pleasure and rewards eternal life to the corrupt applause of the crowd, to engage in outright showing off. As a result, neither the pleasure of Allah nor the gratitude of people is gained. Because Allah Almighty will reveal the intentions of the hypocrite and disgrace him in front of people. The following hadith shows the plight of future life those who were characterized by hypocrisy in this life. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said : “Allah Almighty said: “I am the One who does not need partners. Whoever commits an act for My sake and dedicates it to someone else, I leave him alone with the one whom he has made Me a Partner.” (Muslim, Zuhd, 46). Those. It says here that a person will receive a reward not from Allah, but from the one to whom he wanted to show his deed. It is simply impossible to get anything from people in most cases. And even if you receive it, does it have any value compared to Allah’s reward? It is enough to quote the advice of Abu Hurayrah (Ra) to show how far the Companions were from hypocrisy: “A person observing fasting must keep himself clean, in order and comb his hair. It shouldn’t be obvious from him that he’s fasting!” (Bukhari, al-Adabul-mufrid, no. 1303).
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “O Allah, make faith beloved to us and decorate our hearts with faith! Make unbelief, vice and disobedience disgusting to us. Make us walk on the straight path!” (Ahmad, 3, 424).
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Truly, deeds are judged only by their intentions. Each person will receive only what he intended to receive. Whoever migrates (hijra) for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, his reward is a reward from Allah and His Messenger. Whoever migrated for the sake of something worldly or for the sake of a woman whom he wanted to marry, he found only that for which he migrated » (Muslim, Emirat, 155, Bukhari, Bad-ul Wahi, 1, Iman, 41, Abu Daud, Talaq, 10-11/2201, Tirmidhi, Fadail-ul Jihad, 16/1647, Nasai, Taharat, 60/75 , Ibn Majah, Zuhd, 26).
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah Almighty does not look at your appearance and property, but looks at your hearts and deeds" (Muslim, Birr, 34, Ibn Majah, Zuhd, 9). According to this hadith, when evaluating the servants of Allah, one should pay attention not to their appearance, not to his index finger, words and wealth, but to their intentions and deeds. Because the center of it all is the heart. In this regard, you should pay attention to these warnings of our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “The intentions of a believer are better than his deeds...” (Haysami, 1, 61, Suyuti, Jami, 2, 194). We should pray to Allah Almighty like this: “O my Allah! Accept our intentions by Your grace. Amen!" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also reported that “if a person sincerely wants to become a martyr, he will be considered one even if he dies in his bed” (Muslim, Imara, 156, 157). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said : “Allah Almighty accepts only those deeds that are done with sincerity and for the sake of His favor.” (Nasai, Jihad, 24/3138). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said “Whoever gives for the sake of Allah, forbids for the sake of Allah, loves for the sake of Allah, hates for the sake of Allah, marries for the sake of Allah, he has achieved the perfection of faith.” (Tirmidhi, Qiyamat, 60/2521, Ahmad, 3, 438, Abu Dawud, Sunnat, 15/4681).
The ruler and hero of Khorasan, Amr bin Layth, can serve as a living example of this. After the death of Amr bin Lais, a certain righteous man saw him in a dream. The following conversation took place between them: “How did Allah accept you?” "Allah has forgiven me." “Because of what action of yours did He forgive you?” “One day I climbed to the top of a mountain. When I looked down at my warriors, I admired their number and thought to myself: “Oh, if only I had lived in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and had provided him with help and support...” And it was for this intention and passionate desire that Allah Almighty forgave me.” (Qadi Iyad, Shifa, 2, 28-29).
This incident shows us how important intention and sincerity are. Since intention is associated with concepts such as the heart and reflection, it is not a condition to pronounce this intention with the tongue or the index finger. However, if the intention is pronounced out loud, but is not confirmed by the heart, then such intention is not accepted. Since Allah Almighty knows about the most secret movements of our hearts, there is no point in raising your index finger during tashahudda, especially in front of everyone for show on the street! The Almighty said about this: “Indeed, He is aware of the words that are spoken, and He is aware of what you conceal.”(21:110). Nowadays, many believers raise their index finger when they see other Muslims or when taking pictures. Look on the Internet at photographs of such ignoramuses, there are a lot of them! This is pure SHOW!!! Show your intention and sincerity with your heart in secret from others only to Allah alone, and not publicly! Even those Muslims who raise their index finger during prayer have no point in doing so. They are only deceiving themselves by raising their finger. Allah doesn't need your fingers! Just because you raise only your index finger or several fingers at once, your faith will not increase or decrease by the weight of a speck of dust! Maybe your faith has passed into your index finger and plays the same function as your hearts?!! Worship and good deeds performed for show or to gain worldly goods only destroy a person. Wrong intentions lead a person into sin! Many people hope that by doing this they are getting closer to Allah Almighty. Everyone refers to hadiths, but if these hadiths are false and the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not actually raise his finger, then what should everyone do?! We must be sincere first of all before Allah. Sincerity is a feeling hidden in the heart, and not on the fingers! Sincerity is the complete purification of the heart of the servant of Allah through salvation from all diseases of the soul, striving in all thoughts and words only to gain the favor of Allah, moving away from hypocrisy and window dressing, arrogance and pride in front of others, narcissism and self-satisfaction. The Almighty said: “Your Lord knows what lies in their breasts and what they reveal.”(28:69).
We must cry out to Allah humbly and secretly, and not openly and publicly! Allah said: “Say: “Who saves you from darkness on land and sea, when you call upon Him humbly and secretly, saying: “If He saves us from this, we will certainly be grateful!” (6:63).
According to Junayd Baghdadi, sincerity is so hidden that an angel, not knowing about it, does not include it in the category of good deeds, the shaitan, not knowing about it, cannot spoil it, and the nafs of a person, not knowing about it, cannot dissolve. (Sarraj, Luma, p.290, Qushayri, ar-Risalah, p.446). There are hadiths that prove that on the Day of Advent, in addition to the “book of deeds” from the angels, Allah Almighty will provide Additional information from Himself about the deeds of man!
The Almighty wants His slaves to be sincere: “Verily, We have revealed to you the Book (Quran) in truth. Therefore worship Allah, being sincere in your faith."(39:2) and “Say (Muhammad): “Verily, I am commanded to worship Allah in sincere faith.”(39:11). Allah Almighty declares that He will not accept actions, no matter how significant they may be, in which there is no sincerity and desire to gain His pleasure. If there is sincerity, even if the action is insignificant, then that is enough. No wonder the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said : “Be sincere in your faith! If you can be like this, then even a small deed will be enough for you.” (Hakim, 4, 341/7844).
Many Muslims also mislead themselves during prayer by flicking their tongues and quietly repeating verses after the imam, thereby disturbing other Muslims standing nearby! They are in the same error as other errant scholars who argued that during prayer, Muslims are obliged to move their tongues and repeat verses after the imam in order to prove their righteousness. And there is no need for this - Allah already knows and hears everything that is in our hearts and thoughts! By doing this, you are unknowingly denying the Great Syfat of Allah Azza wa Jalla, that Allah will not hear or see your prayers if you do not lift your finger or repeat the verses quietly with your tongue! This is exactly what real shirk is!!! Thus, you commit the greatest injustice to His syfat and actions, not recognizing them, being led into error by the instigations of the shaitan. This sin is called “Akbarul Kabir” - “the greatest among the great”! It's there "great injustice"(31:13) and "to invent a great sin" (4:48)!
As the Koran says, dua is the most easy way achievements of Allah. He is closer to a person than jugular vein, so he knows everything and hears everything… . Not a single thought that flashes in a person’s mind can hide from Allah. Our Lord knows everything better than anyone else. Allah Almighty, eliminating all doubts in this matter, instructs His slaves this way: “If My slaves ask you about Me, then I am close and answer the call of the one praying when he calls on Me. Let them answer Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will follow the right way"(2:186) and “... He knows the hidden and the obvious, and He is the Wise, the Knowing” (6:73)..

“Verily, your religion is one religion, and I am your Lord. Fear Me! But they have split their religion into pieces, and each sect rejoices in what it has” (23:52-53).
In conclusion, for religious fanatics, I will quote two reliable hadiths:
1. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of the Almighty upon him) repeated three times and insistently: “Those who show excessive scrupulousness and excessive severity will perish”;

2. Also, the messenger of the Creator warned: “Beware of excess [fanaticism] in matters of faith and religion! Indeed, [many] who came before you perished precisely because of this.”

Excessive scrupulousness and fanaticism do not lead to anything good. Moreover, the scrupulousness that brings enmity and hostility among believers.

It is reported that Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Verily, Allah Almighty does not look at your bodies or your appearance, but He looks at your hearts.” (Muslim).

“Allah knows the deceit of the eyes and what the hearts conceal.”(Forgiving, 19).

Gestures made from combinations of fingers in different cultures have very different meanings. So, for example, the “thumbs up” symbol can speak both of a decision to pardon the vanquished (a famous gesture during the fight of Roman gladiators), and of a common request for a ride, to take a fellow traveler (hitchhiking), if we are talking about a thumb raised up by the road somewhere in America. The index finger carries other information. Let's take a closer look.

What is this thumbs up symbol?

It is clear that the meaning of the symbol depends on which country and which finger is used. And here there are a great many options: from greetings and approval to indecent analogies.

  1. For Muslims, the index finger of the right hand raised up is a symbol of the proclamation of monotheism, that is, translated into Russian it means: “There is no God but Allah!”
  2. In Germany, this gesture says: “Everything is fine.”
  3. In Slavic countries, a raised index finger means a call for attention from others, and in American schools, students thus ask the teacher for permission to answer a question.
  4. If during a conversation you raise your index finger up and shake it from side to side, then the interlocutor of almost any nationality will understand this as a refusal of what was proposed or an unwillingness to discuss the topic.

What are we talking about when we raise our thumbs up?

The symbol - the index and thumb connected with the rest raised up, means in America and most European countries: “Everything is fine!” But in Brazil and Turkey such a gesture will be perceived as an insult.

A resident of Holland, inviting you to a friendly drinking session, will raise his little finger up and his thumb to the side. This is where you probably want to respond to him with the gesture described above. Still: “Everything is great”! And a Frenchman can raise his little finger in response, which will mean: “Leave me alone!”

If someone raises their thumb up, the symbol hardly needs any special decoding - it is a sign of wishes for good luck, recognition that everything is going as it should, agreement with the proposed program of action, etc.

True, in Turkey and Arab countries such a gesture is a phallic symbol, and in Greece it is a demand: “Shut up!”

Most common symbol

Thumbs up in other cases too. The truth is not one, but two: we are talking about the V-shaped sign with the index and middle fingers, known in European countries.

It was introduced during the Second World War by Winston Churchill to signify victory, and since then the gesture has become very popular. True, for the English, one nuance is important in it: which side is the palm facing the speaker at that moment. If it is from the back, then it is: “victory”, but if it is with the palm, then its interpretation becomes offensive.

Another gesture is no less popular: “goat”. We are talking about the index finger and little finger raised up. In the CIS this is a notorious “rocker” symbol. Thumbs up In a similar way as a sign of superiority over someone, a desire to humiliate him. Although in mystical rituals this sign is protection from dark forces.

The straightened index finger of the right hand is a symbol of the proclamation of monotheism among Muslims.
The raised index finger of the right hand means not “Allahu Akbar”, but “La Ilaha Ilalah”!
Everyone who has prayed at least once in their life knows this, because during the performance of rak'ah, the person praying raises his finger up to read the “Shahadah” - the statement that there is no God except Allah (Lord) - in Arabic “La Ilaha Ilalah”!

According to the naive ideas of the “Salafis”, this sign should demonstrate their commitment to monotheism - after all, God is one, like a finger. Wahhabis love to pose in photos with such a “finger,” thereby wanting to show their “monotheism.”
However, there are no hadiths that speak of such a finger as a symbol of Islam or monotheism.

What does the index finger up sign mean for Muslims?

Quite often lately you can see in photographs or video reports how Muslim militants raise their index finger up. It turns out that this gesture in itself does not mean anything offensive or provocative for Muslims. This is simply a statement expressed by a gesture that Allah is one, that is, the index finger simply means one. Although some people seriously suspected that this gesture was an analogue of the European raised middle finger, and I even had to read an explanation that this was an offensive gesture, because this finger in the desert lands is considered an analogue of the Russian burdock.

Azamatik

The Muslim gesture - the index finger raised up - means "Allah is one"(there is no God but Allah).

I don’t understand why they should do this for show, take pictures while performing this gesture, etc.

It’s strange when the same gesture is made by non-Muslims (the same militants, terrorists). They contradict themselves: after all, Islam does not condone the killing of people.

Yannet

This does not mean at all the well-known gesture where the raised middle finger of the hand carries an offensive tone. We are talking about the index finger of the right hand raised vertically. This is a religious gesture, such a gesture is considered a sign of tawhid, which expresses the Muslim faith in the uniqueness of Allah.

Where did this gesture come from?
The fact is that the index finger extended upward is one of the main symbols of Freemasonry, which, in turn, borrowed it from ancient pagan religions, where this finger symbolized a person’s connection with “higher powers” (that is, Satan).
Also, in black magic rituals, Satan himself is usually depicted with his finger raised up, as can be seen in the photo below.
Thus, since Wahhabism was an invention of English Freemasonry, someone introduced this sign into it so that the “Salafis” would bear the satanic mark on themselves.

If the finger is raised vertically, it means “stop!” , "attention!" .

A hand raised up with an index finger says: “Attention, I want to say something!” .
There is one hidden position of the index finger: if a person speaks and his gaze is directed in one direction, and the index finger in the other, while it is slightly bent, then the person is telling a lie.

In everyday life, people constantly accompany their speech with hand movements and facial expressions. Most often this happens unconsciously, but sometimes gestures are used intentionally to enhance the emotional and expressive coloring of words, to demonstrate one’s mood, attitude towards the situation or interlocutor. Having studied some finger gestures and their meaning, you can succinctly formulate any message and quickly convey it to others, as the deaf and dumb do. Let's look at the most common signs and explain their meaning.

Thumbs up and down

With a gesture thumbs up Everyone has known each other almost since childhood. Usually it symbolizes approval or agreement, accompanied by an appropriate nod, so it is always perceived positively in our country. Often used by voting travelers on the road when it is necessary to stop transport. However, you need to be careful when using your fingers to communicate with foreigners, because in the sign language of the inhabitants of Australia, Greece and Great Britain such a sign is regarded as an obscene expression, and among Arabs it is generally associated with the male genital organ.

When thumb down, the gesture takes on the opposite meaning - that is, an expression of dissatisfaction, dissatisfaction. Today it is reflected on social networks and the YouTube channel. The pictogram depicting it is called a “dislike”.

Forefinger

The next gesture is not so unambiguous and is deciphered depending on the situation, taking into account additional signals. This is the index finger up. There are several options for its interpretation:

  • applied to the center of the lips - asked to remain silent;
  • raised vertically at head level or higher - require attention or stop immediately;
  • move it from side to side - express their disagreement or prohibition;
  • shake up and down - teach or threaten with punishment;
  • twisted at the temple - they show that the person is out of his mind.

By his position during a conversation, they determine whether a person is telling the truth or lying. If, for example, the eyes are looking in one direction, and the index finger is pointing in the other and slightly bent, then the interlocutor is most likely insincere.

Middle finger up

Ever since ancient Rome In almost all civilized countries, the meaning of the middle finger gesture was indecent and offensive. Extended upward, it symbolizes today the male genital organ. This is a rough form of the phrase "Get out!" or “Fuck off!” among young people. In our country, it is borrowed from cool American action films and vulgar 18+ youth comedies.

Crossing your fingers

The hand is very often used by superstitious people as a magical tool that can scare away evil spirits and attract good luck. In their understanding, crossed fingers (index and middle) have protective power. This gesture signifies the unity of faith and strength and is associated with the cross. One of the fingers symbolizes hope for a better outcome, and the other - help and support. Sometimes they are intertwined on both hands and hidden behind the back in order to lie, but at the same time avoid punishment from higher powers.

Research by British scientists from University College proves that such actions are not unfounded. They even found scientific confirmation. In their opinion, the gesture really helps reduce painful sensations. But don’t even think about showing it to a Vietnamese unless you want to seriously offend him.

Two fingers up V – victory

In Russia and many others European countries the gesture of two fingers with an open palm means absolute victory or confidence in the proximity of its achievement. This is due to the fact that the index and middle fingers, directed upward, look like the letter V. That, in turn, is an abbreviation from the Latin word Victoria - victory. For the first time in the world, the sign was used by Winston Churchill. However, it is also not universal for everyone. The British, Australians and New Zealanders will consider the gesture an insult if the back of the hand is turned towards them. In Russia, this option is interpreted as the number 2.

In Russia, “goat” can be deciphered to demonstrate one’s power and superiority over others. It also serves as a comic imitation of butting cattle.

Shaka and tongue between fingers

Hand clenched into a fist with protruding thumb and the little finger near the ear are associated by many with a telephone conversation, a request or a promise to call back. But if the action is accompanied by a characteristic tilt of the head or touching the little finger to the lips, then it takes on a different meaning associated with a call to drink alcoholic beverages and use narcotic cigarettes.

In Hawaii, "Shaka" is seen as a sign of greeting. It is popular among athletes in surfing, skydiving and Brazilian jiu-jitsu wrestling. It is also used to express jubilation by some famous football players who have scored a goal.

Russian and English alphabet with gestures

The language of the deaf and mute is the main way they interact with the outside world. It allows people with hearing and speech impairments to communicate. Each gesture corresponds to a letter of the alphabet or a word. This can be presented more clearly in the form of a table.

As you can see, the same gestures can be interpreted in different ways. This is why they should be interpreted as a system and not individually. And only use it when appropriate.
