Icon of Saint Helen. Saints Constantine and Helen: icons and portraits

On March 19, Orthodox believers celebrate a special holiday - the finding of the Holy Cross and the nails with which the Savior was crucified by the holy Queen Equal-to-the-Apostles Helen in Jerusalem. "Parishioner" decided to remind its readers of some details of the discovery of relics relating to the Passion of Christ.

Every great event has its own backstory and its own heroes. The fact that relics sacred to all Christians were found - the Life-Giving Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, and the nails with which the most pure body of the Savior was nailed to the Cross - we owe it to Emperor Constantine the Great and his mother, Queen Helena.

But this story began two and a half centuries after the birth of Christ, when in the small ancient Greek settlement of Drepan in the province of Bithynia, on the coast Sea of Marmara, was born, grew up and lived beautiful girl. Her name was Flavia Julia Elena. Who could have guessed then that Christian history she will be known as Queen Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, a saint, glorified among the Equal-to-the-Apostles for her services to the Church (by the way, besides Queen Helen herself, there are only five female Equal-to-the-Apostles saints in the history of Christianity: the myrrh-bearer Mary Magdalene, the first martyr Thekla of Iconium, the martyr Apphia of Colossia, the enlightener of Georgia, Saint Nina and Saint Princess Olga).

According to historians, Elena did not have a noble origin: she was either a servant in a roadside inn, or helped her father at the horse station, serving wine to travelers waiting for their horses to be re-harnessed. But since the ways of the Lord are not accidental and inscrutable, it was at this roadside establishment on the way to the city of Nicomedia at the beginning of 270 that Helen met Constantius Chlorus, one of the four then rulers of the Roman Empire. He fell in love with her and made her his wife. And on February 27, 272, in the city of Naiss, Helen gave birth to his son - Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantine, the future Emperor Constantine I the Great.

In 306, the father of the future emperor, Constantius Chlorus, dies, and the army proclaims Constantine Augustus, thereby making him one of the four rulers of the Roman Empire. Times were turbulent then: Roman commanders constantly had to fight battles, either defending the borders of the empire from an external enemy, or fighting internal enemies. It is known that one of Constantine’s co-rulers, Maxentius, very quickly turned into a harsh tyrant. Having imposed exorbitant taxes on the Roman people, he himself spent his time in continuous celebrations and entertainment. The future ruler of the Roman Empire, Constantine, had to start an internal war, first with Maxentius, and then with another co-ruler, Licinius.

Only by defeating them did Constantine become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. And it must be said that in this post he proved himself to be a truly great emperor. By issuing the Edict of Milan, Emperor Constantine was the first in Roman history to first declare religious tolerance throughout the empire, and later make Christianity the dominant religion.

Historians believe that Constantine the Great was prompted by a vision to abandon paganism in favor of Christianity. On the evening of October 27, 312, on the eve of the main battle with the army of Maxentius, according to Constantine himself, Christ appeared to him in a dream and ordered him to inscribe troops on the shields and banners greek letters XP are the first two letters of the Greek spelling of the name of Christ. Waking up from sleep, Constantine ordered his soldiers to put this inscription on their shields and banners. And in the morning next day, preparing for the main battle near the Milvian Bridge, Constantine and the soldiers next to him saw a luminous image of a cross in the sky, and above it the inscription “In hoc signo vinces” - “By this victory.”

Despite the fact that Maxentius's army was outnumbered, Constantine's warriors won a brilliant victory in the battle near the Milvian Bridge. Maxentius himself fled in fear and drowned in the waters of the Tiber. Since then, the abbreviation XP and the image of the cross have always been embroidered on the banners of Emperor Constantine the Great.

Having become the sovereign ruler of the Roman Empire, Constantine the Great decided to move the capital from Rome to the ancient Greek city of Byzantium. He significantly rebuilt the city and called it New Rome. However, this name did not catch on - already during the life of the emperor throughout the empire it was called Constantinople. It is believed that this city great emperor brought as a gift to the Most Holy Theotokos.

...It is known that the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Queen Helena was a pagan for 60 years of her life and became a Christian only under the influence of the son of Emperor Constantine. But in the last 20 years of her life, the queen did an incredible amount to spread the teachings of Christ.

It is especially worth noting that Constantine the Great respected and revered his mother, Queen Helena. He made the settlement in which she was born - Drepan - a city and called it Elenopol. In 324, Constantine awarded his mother the imperial title, proclaiming her Augusta. As their contemporary church historian Eusebius of Caesarea wrote, the emperor trusted Queen Helena so much that he allowed his mother to dispose of the royal treasury at her discretion. Finally, in 326, Emperor Constantine entrusted Queen Helen with the most important and responsible mission - to find the Holy Sepulcher. True, according to other sources - in particular, Socrates Scholastic wrote about this in his “ Church history"and the Monk Theophan the Confessor in his work "Chronography" - the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Queen Helen, like her son Constantine in her time, had a divine vision that prompted her to search for the Life-Giving Cross.

In this dream, as St. Theophan the Confessor, " she was commanded to go to Jerusalem and bring to the light of the divine places closed by the wicked" At the age of 80, Queen Helena goes on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. As Eusebius Caesareas writes, “ this old woman of extraordinary intelligence hurried to the east with the speed of a youth».

As all the historians who studied the pilgrimage of St. Helena, Equal to the Apostles, noted in their works, on the way to Jerusalem she literally showered blessings on the inhabitants of the cities: she generously supplied soldiers with money, gave money, clothing and food to the poor and needy, ransomed debtors from creditors, freed them from prisons...

The story of Queen Helena's search for the Holy Sepulcher and the discovery of the Life-Giving Cross and nails was described in detail by many historians of that time, in particular Socrates Scholasticus, Theodoret of Cyrus, Ambrose of Milan, Rufinus, Sozomen and many others. Their stories sometimes differ from each other in details, but according to the most mentioned version, Saint Queen Helena was assisted in the search and excavation of the cave where the Savior was buried by Bishop Macarius I of Jerusalem and a certain local resident Judas.

According to legend, Judas was one of the Jewish sages and he learned the place where the Cross was buried from his father. True, it is known that Judas did not want to reveal the secret to the queen and even declared at the council of elders that the discovery of the Cross would destroy the religion of the Jews and deprive them of their superiority over Christians.

Having learned about this, Queen Helen subjected Judas to severe torture. She ordered him to be thrown into a dry well and kept him there for seven days. According to legend, Judas prayed all the time for God to send him some sign, and on the seventh day the earth opened up and smoke of incredible sweetness burst out from its depths. This sign prompted Judas to exclaim: “Truly, Jesus Christ, You are the Savior of the world.” After which he agreed to show the queen the place where the Holy Sepulcher was hidden. And after finding the Life-Giving Cross, Judas himself was baptized with the name Cyriacus (later for his commitment to Christian faith Judas Cyriacus accepted martyrdom during the time of Emperor Julian the Apostate).

Having learned the exact location, Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Queen Helen ordered excavations to begin on Golgotha. By the way, at this place there was a pagan temple of the worship of Venus. It was built in 130 by order of Emperor Hadrian, who tried with all his might to destroy any memory of Christ. Queen Helen ordered the destruction of the temple of the pagan goddess and the beginning of excavations. At the same time, the queen herself constantly monitored how the work was progressing. At times, wanting to encourage and encourage the diggers, Saint Helena threw money at them.

Finally, the excavation of the Holy Sepulcher was completed. True, not one cross, but three were found near the cave, since after the execution the Roman soldiers placed in one place both the Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified and the other two on which the robbers were executed. Also found were four nails and a tablet with the acronym INRI (translated from Latin as “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”).

The crosses were raised, and then the question arose, which of them was the true Cross on which the Savior was crucified. The solution was proposed by Bishop Macarius of Jerusalem. In a house not far from the excavation site there was a woman who had long suffered from an incurable disease and was almost dying. The bishop suggested applying all three crosses in turn to the dying woman’s body. He hoped that by touching the Cross of the Savior, the woman would be healed. And so it happened. The two crosses did not produce any effect on the patient, but when she was allowed to touch the third Cross, the patient, as contemporaries described this event, suddenly came to life, felt much better and soon completely recovered.

The Holy Queen Helen divided the found Cross into two parts. The queen presented one half of the Cross in a silver ark, along with one nail and a tablet with the abbreviation INRI, to Bishop Macarius as a souvenir for future generations. She sent the other one, along with the nails she found, to her son Konstantin. In addition, Queen Helena left small particles of the Holy Tree of the Cross on her way home in the monasteries she founded.

By the way, while in Palestine, Saint Helena founded many churches. Among the most famous and revered: the Church of the Holy Sepulcher on Calvary, the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the church above the site of the Ascension of Christ on the Mount of Olives, the Church of the Holy Family in Gethsemane, the church above the tomb of Lazarus in Bethany, the Temple of the Twelve Apostles at Lake Tiberias, the temple in the name of Jesus Christ and the apostles Peter, James and John on Mount Tabor and the Temple of Elijah the Prophet at the site of his ascension.

Having received part of the Life-Giving Cross, Emperor Constantine the Great, according to one source, put it in an ark and gave it to the bishop of Constantinople for safekeeping; according to other sources, the emperor placed a piece of the Cross inside his statue mounted on a column in the center of Constantine Square. And the great emperor decided to keep the nails from the Cross of the Savior with him at all times: for this purpose, he ordered one to be forged into his helmet, the other into the bridle of his horse.

It is known that the Jerusalem part of the Cross disappeared in 1187 at the Battle of Hattin. Researchers believe that after the defeat of the Crusaders, the holy relic was captured by Muslims. The Constantinople part of the Cross was stolen in 1294: having plundered the capital of Byzantium, the crusaders took this part of the Life-Giving Cross to Europe, and today its particles can be found in temples and churches in almost all European states. It turns out that particles of the Holy Tree on which the Savior was crucified spread throughout the world, as did the teachings of Christ itself.

Queen Equal to the Apostles Helen of Constantinople is the mother of Tsar Constantine. The first merit of Queen Helena was that she endeared her son Constantine to the Christian faith, and through this gradually the entire Roman world became Christian. The second merit of Queen Helena is the erection of the Holy Cross and the construction of now famous and iconic churches in the Holy Land. Through her efforts, the Church of the Resurrection (and the Holy Sepulcher) was built on Calvary, where the Holy Fire descends annually on Easter night; on the Mount of Olives (where the Lord ascended to Heaven); in Bethlehem (where the Lord was born according to the flesh) and in Hebron at the Oak of Mamre (where God appeared to Abraham). Saint Helena is the patroness of the church clergy, temple builders, philanthropists and missionaries. They pray to her for the gift and strengthening of faith in children and relatives, for the gift of parental zeal for raising children in the faith, for the admonition of non-believers and sectarians. She is prayerfully commemorated together with her Equal-to-the-Apostles son Constantine.

The icon of St. Helena is the greatest relic in the history of Orthodoxy. She is a part of the past that came to the future in order to remain in it for centuries, turning into one of the most revered images. It contains the soul of the people, their pain and suffering, difficult periods of formation and faith, which, having gone through a long and difficult path, has become a symbol of all Christianity.

Icon of Helen Equal to the Apostles

The mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine, Helen, like himself, can be called the most outstanding personalities in the history of Orthodoxy of all centuries who were canonized as equal to the apostles.

They have long been depicted on icons as people who contributed to the strengthening of Christianity. Elena helped faithful Christians return their relics and shrines, and helped in the construction of temples and churches. But most of all, she became famous for her righteous deeds in the name of Christ. And the main one is the Exaltation of the Cross of the Lord.

Icon of Saint Helena, meaning, what it helps with

The true meaning of this face is that every believer who turns to him not only finds help and salvation, but also strengthens his faith, just as Elena did. The holy image teaches that everyone who believes in the Lord must sacredly carry out his work and honor him.

On the face, Elena is depicted with her son Constantine, where each of them supports the Cross with one hand. This is a symbol of support and assistance in the revival of Christianity and a sign that it will always exist as long as there are people who, through their faith and righteous deeds, carry it in their hearts, as they carry the word of God, and it is eternal on earth.

In addition, the image is the sacred patron of the family and everything connected with it. That is why people often turn to him with prayers for preserving the family home, raising children (even about their birth - infertility treatment), resolving conflicts, reviving understanding, trust, and love.

Also, the image is very revered among workers Agriculture and ordinary Christians working on the land. It is believed to help increase harvest and fertility, which in turn will bring prosperity to all who have worked for the good.

Great is its help in healing ailments and strengthening physical health, which is inextricably linked with the spiritual, for a person who wants to heal the body must start with the soul. And here the main thing is faith, eternal and unshakable. Only she is the only true road to God's grace.

They turn to the Saint for protection with these words:

About the wonderful and all-praised king, the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine and Helen! To you, as a warm intercessor, we offer our unworthy prayers, for you have great boldness towards the Lord. Ask Him for the peace of the Church and prosperity for the whole world, wisdom for the ruler, care for the flock for the shepherd, humility for the flock, desired peace for the elders, strength for husbands, beauty for women, purity for virgins, obedience for children, Christian education for babies, healing for the sick, reconciliation for those at war, patience for the offended, those who offend the fear of God. To those who come to this temple and pray in it, a holy blessing and everything useful for each request, let us praise and sing the Benefactor of all God in the Trinity of the glorified Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

“Saint Helen” (icon): description and meaning

In the great host of holy saints of God, only a few were canonized as saints equal to the apostles. Only special services to the church, which placed them on the same level as the apostles, allowed them to receive this honor. One of those whose earthly ministry received such high praise was St. Helena. For many centuries, the icon with her image was one of the most revered Orthodox shrines.

The innkeeper's young daughter

Who is she, Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Queen Helen, whose icon is found in most Russian churches and attracts crowds of believers? To answer this question, let us open the life of the holy servant of God, compiled a short time after her blessed death, and the few works of ancient historians that have reached us, describing her glorious deeds.

Around 250, in the Asia Minor city of Bethany, the owner of a local inn had a daughter who helped him serve visitors. This was the future Saint Helen. The icon of this queen equal to the apostles presents us today with the image of a majestic woman, directing her inner gaze to the heavenly world, and in those days she was still a simple girl who did not think about the great mission ahead of her. And, as happened at all times, one day she fell in love.

A happy but suddenly ended marriage

Her chosen one, the young Roman warrior Constantius Chlorus, reciprocated, and soon their union was sealed with marriage. The couple named their firstborn Konstantin. This child - the fruit of their first love - was also subsequently canonized among the Equal-to-the-Apostles, like his mother, Saint Helen. An icon with their image is always taken out from the church altar on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, celebrated on September 27.

Their serene family life came to an end when the reigning Emperor Diocletian in those years, having appointed Chlorus as ruler of vast colonies, demanded that he dissolve his marriage and marry his stepdaughter Theodora. Chlorus could not give up his brilliant career for the sake of the woman he loved, and their union fell apart.

However, evil is punished not only in novels and plays. Very soon the traitor regretted what he had done, since his young wife, together with her numerous relatives, turned him family life into such a nightmare that he had to fight them off with the help of his personal guard.

New Christian

Meanwhile, Elena, abandoned by her husband, settled in the city of Drepanum. The choice was not accidental - her son, who had already matured by that time, lived and studied martial arts there. It so happened, and this clearly shows the Providence of God, that there was a large community of Christians in the city. Followers of the true faith professed it in secret, since in those years it was still prohibited.

Attending their meetings and listening to preachers, Elena eventually comprehended the depth of the teaching that was new to her and was baptized by a local elder. From that time on, she began a long path of spiritual growth, the result of which was the mission, the fulfillment of which allowed her to shine in the ranks of the saints equal to the apostles.

Empress Helena

Years passed, and Constantius Chlorus, Helen’s ex-husband, died. At the end of his life, he was the ruler of the Western lands of the Roman Empire, appointed to this post by Diocletian, who once elevated him at the cost of family happiness. After the death of his father, Helen's son Constantine took his place, posing serious competition to the emperor Maximian who ruled in those years. Their political confrontation resulted in an open war, in which Constantine won and became the sole ruler of the Great Roman Empire.

One of his first acts of state was an edict, as a result of which Christianity received legal status. This document ended almost three centuries of Roman persecution of the church. Having become emperor, Constantine summoned his mother to the capital and elevated her to the rank of Augusta, that is, empress and his co-ruler.

On the path of serving God

However, a wise and devoid of vanity woman, knowing how transitory earthly glory can be, used the opportunities that opened up to her not for personal benefit, but for serving the church. By her order and at her expense, Christian churches were built and new communities were created in the empire, which had not yet awakened from its pagan sleep. But ahead lay the main mission that Saint Helena had to fulfill.

The icon, the meaning of which is expressed by the plot composition itself, presents the viewer with the Equal-to-the-Apostles Empress next to the Cross of the Lord she acquired. It is in this find, which has become the greatest shrine of the entire Orthodox world, that its historical merit lies.

The beginning of a great mission

The life of Saint Helena tells us that, having grieved with heart the outrage that the Romans committed over Jerusalem, capturing it in the year 70 and destroying everything that was connected with earthly life Christ, she herself went to Palestine to God's help to find the Life-Giving Tree on which the Savior was crucified.

Empress Helena was already over seventy when, in 326, she boarded a ship and sailed to the shores of the Holy Land. The task she set for herself was unusually difficult. Over the past centuries, Jerusalem did not belong, as before, to the Jews, but was under the control of the pagans. Even on the site where Christ was once crucified, there was a temple of Venus.

Finding the Holy Cross

By the way, this place itself was found with great difficulty, since no one knew where exactly to look for it. Only thanks to the help of an old Jew named Judas, whose ancestors from generation to generation passed on the story of an event three hundred years ago, was it possible to determine it with the necessary accuracy. After the pagan temple was demolished and Bishop Macarius served a prayer service in the vacant place, everyone present suddenly felt an unearthly fragrance emanating from the earth.

When was it deleted? upper layer soil accumulated there behind long years, all those present were presented with three crosses, which had remained in the same place since that great day, and on one of which the Savior suffered martyrdom. But which of them was the instrument of Christ’s torment remained a mystery. There was also a tablet, the inscription on which was made by Pontius Pilate, and nails.

But the Lord Himself showed them the truth. He managed Bishop Macarius to stop a woman passing by funeral procession and touch the deceased one by one with all the crosses. When the Cross of the Lord was placed on the deceased, he unexpectedly rose again. So Christian church found its greatest shrine, thanks to the labors that the holy Queen Helen put into it. The icon usually depicts her standing next to this wonderful find.

The beginning of veneration of the saint

It should be noted that in the entire history of Christianity, only five women were awarded canonization as saints, among whom Saint Helen rightfully took her place. Her icon was painted immediately after her death. At the same time, widespread veneration began in the East, reaching Western Europe only at the beginning of the 9th century. In our country, the saint’s memory is celebrated twice a year – on March 19 and June 3 – and has deep roots. It is known that the grandmother of the baptizer of Rus', Prince Vladimir, the first Russian Christian, Princess Olga, received the name Helen in holy baptism precisely in honor of the Equal-to-the-Apostles mother of Emperor Constantine the Great.

Iconography of Saint Helena

It will not be an exaggeration to say that among other saints of God, the Orthodox Church especially distinguishes Saint Helena Equal-to-the-Apostles in terms of the significance of the act she performed. Her icon is well known to all believers. She often appears there with her son, Emperor Constantine, just like her mother, who was elevated to the rank of Equal-to-the-Apostles for establishing Christianity as the official state religion. However, more often there are images in which only Saint Helen is represented.

The icon, the meaning of which becomes clearer the more thoughtfully we relate the plot to the life of the pious empress, usually depicts her against the backdrop of Jerusalem, standing near the monumental Cross of the Lord and turning her gaze to Heaven. She is dressed in the attire adopted by Byzantine empresses, with a crown or crown on her head. Sometimes a precious cloth is depicted under the crown. This is the most common plot. The icon of St. Helena, the photo of which opens the article, belongs specifically to this group.

However, the earliest Byzantine icons depict the saint holding in her upraised hands a medallion with a cross inscribed on it. In this case, she is also depicted either alone or with her son Constantine. An example of this is the mosaic in Constantinople's Hagia Sophia.

Russian version of the icon

In Russian iconography there is a completely original icon “St. Helena”. The meaning helps to understand the event that occurred in 1665 in Moscow. Then a cross with particles of the Life-Giving Tree of the Lord, specially made by order of Emperor Alexei Mikhailovich, was delivered from Palestine. It was intended for a monastery located on Kiy Island in the White Sea, and its arrival became a significant event in church life. The icon was painted in memory of him.

It depicted a Cross, on the sides of which were placed the figures of Saints Equal-to-the-Apostles Helen and Constantine, as well as Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, Tsarina Maria Ilyinichna and the kneeling Patriarch Nikon. Subsequently, when he fell into disgrace and was displaced, his image was removed from the composition of the icon, and subsequent lists from it contain only four figures. Among the images painted in a later period, the image of Saint Helena holding in her hand predominates. small cross, symbolizing its legendary discovery at the site of Christ's crucifixion.

Icon of Saint Helena. How does an image help?

In Russian Orthodoxy, there has been a tradition of turning to Equal-to-the-Apostles Queen Helen with a variety of requests. But most often, in front of her holy image, they pray for healing from illnesses and bestowing health on themselves and their loved ones. They also resort to her help in case of financial difficulties. If a prayer is said with faith and trust in the mercy of God, then it is heard and what is asked is fulfilled.

The icon of St. Helena has one unique feature. If the queen is depicted together with her son and successor Emperor Constantine, then it is recommended that people who are busy contact her political activity and those in need of support. Such a prayer can be relevant on the eve of elections and instill hope even in those candidates who have nothing else to count on.

Nowadays, among the images of the most revered saints of God among the people, there is also an icon of St. Helena. In Moscow, her wonderful image can be seen in the church belonging to the parish of Saints Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine and Helena in Mitino. She is depicted holding, together with her son, the holy cross that she had acquired and given to the entire Christian church. In addition, her image can be found in almost any Orthodox church Russia and offer your prayer to him.

Saint Helena Equal to the Apostles in the world had the name Flavia Julia Helena Augusta. She was the mother of Constantine the First, Emperor of Rome, whom Elena endeared to the Christian faith. Three crosses were found in the ground and next to it a sign that read “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”

To find out on which cross the Savior was crucified, they were placed on the dead one in turn. Two crosses had no effect. But when the third cross was laid, a miracle happened: the dead man was resurrected. That’s how they found out which of the crosses was the Savior’s cross. Because the world found the Life-Giving Cross, Queen Helen began to be called Equal to the Apostles.

All the people wanted to see the Holy Cross, which performed a miracle. Then Queen Helena and Patriarch Macarius of Jerusalem erected a cross on an elevated place. And all the people, seeing the erected Cross of the Lord, prayed with the words “Lord have mercy.”

In honor of this event, the Church established the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which is celebrated on September 27. This great holiday. Now on this holiday, a cross is solemnly brought to the middle of the temple for worship.

Queen Helena did a lot to spread Christianity in other countries.
Already in her advanced years, Saint Helena, at the request of her son, set out from Rome to Jerusalem to look for the Holy Cross on which the Lord was crucified. And this is why Emperor Constantine made such a request to his mother. On October 28, 312, at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge over the Tiber, Constantine defeated his opponent Maxentius and took control of the Western part of the Roman Empire. Victory was granted to Constantine from above. The historian Eusebius reports that during prayer, Constantine saw in the sky “an amazing sign of God: a luminous cross appeared on top of the sun with the inscription “Under this sign you will conquer.”
In Jerusalem, Queen Helena zealously began searching for the Cross of the Lord. It was found under one of the pagan temples. The queen immediately notified her son about this, and Constantine received this news with joy. He had the idea to distinguish Holy place any monument worthy of him. So on that spot the Church of the Resurrection of Christ was erected.
In memory of the events of the earthly life of Christ, Helen founded several churches in the Holy Land, of which the most famous throughout the world is the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. On her way back to her homeland, she founded a number of monasteries, for example, the Stavrovouni Monastery in Cyprus. The queen took great care in decorating them and supplying them with everything necessary for worship. She found many holy relics, including the tunic of Jesus Christ.
She returned to Constantinople with part of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord and the nails found along with the Cross, with which the Body of the Lord was nailed.

Saint Helen died at about 80 years of age in 327 in the arms of her son and grandson Constantius.
For her great services to the church, Elena was canonized as Equal-to-the-Apostles (besides her, only five other women received such an honor - Mary Magdalene, First Martyr Thekla, Martyr Apphia, Princess Olga and the enlightener of Georgia Nina).

Interesting story associated with the movement of the relics of St. Queen Helena from Rome to France. As Nikolai Nikishin, a cleric of the Three Hierarchs' Metochion of the Moscow Patriarchate in Paris, says, today the relics are in one of the Catholic churches on the main street of Paris, dotted with low-grade entertainment establishments. Initially, the relics were kept in the Church of the Hieromartyrs Marcellinus and Peter in Rome. But in the 9th century, a French monk, who received healing from the relics, secretly took them to his abbey.

When the Pope learned about the fate of the stolen relics, he did not demand their return, and they remained in France. During the revolution, persecution began against the Church, and shortly before the destruction of the monastery, the relics were transferred to a church located in a neighboring village. And in 1820, the relics ended up with the knights of the Royal Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulcher, which considered Queen Helena their founder (since she founded the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem). This is how the relics ended up in the Saint-Leu-Saint-Gilles church in Paris, where they are still kept in a sarcophagus suspended high under the arches. History contains many testimonies of miraculous healings of people who turned their prayers to Queen Helen, Equal-to-the-Apostles. However, today few pilgrims come to the relics - for many Orthodox Christians the location of the relics remains a mystery.

But most of all, she became famous for her righteous deeds in the name of Christ. And the main one is the Exaltation of the Cross of the Lord.

The image is also very revered among agricultural workers and ordinary Christians working on the land. It is believed to help increase harvest and fertility, which in turn will bring prosperity to all who have worked for the good.

Its great help is in healing ailments and strengthening physical health, which is inextricably linked with the spiritual, for a person who wants to heal the body must start with the soul.

Amen.

But you can use photographs of canonical icons and their images made using typographic methods for prayer. The Christian technique of correct prayer to Saint Helena involves the most important moment. When looking at an icon and praying in front of an icon at home, you should under no circumstances pray to the icon itself, as an object. They should not turn to the icon during prayer, ask for the icon, talk to it, wait for an answer from the icon, and so on. Imply the presence of the Holy One directly in the icon. Such prayer techniques exist in the occult and are not used by Christians under any circumstances. However, with the understanding that the candle is a sacrifice to God, and not to Saint Helena. While praying to Saint Helena, a Christian does not try to observe the burning of a candle, the behavior of the flame, the shape of the soot, the color of the fire or its brightness. Just as he does not interpret the shape of the swells on a candle during prayer. Interpreting what is happening as an “answer” to prayer. This is no longer an Orthodox Christian prayer to Saint Helena, but fortune telling on a candle in front of an icon. An esoteric type of sorcery or divination.
