What do ceramic braces look like? Ceramic braces. Myths about braces

Straight teeth and a snow-white smile are a well-known sign of success and prosperity. That's why most modern people strive to make their teeth brighter and their bite correct. A beautiful smile brings psychological comfort and gives self-confidence, and for some it is even a professional necessity. Braces are the simplest, most effective and reliable way elimination of dental anomalies at almost any age.

Ceramic braces is a type of braces system that can be used to correct your bite effectively and almost unnoticeably to others. Today, braces are the best and most effective orthodontic design. With their help, you can eliminate various anomalies of teeth, dentition and bite.

The bracket system consists of clasps (braces), an orthodontic power arch and ligatures (wires or rubber bands). Braces are installed at a certain angle, which is calculated by the orthodontist. Ligatures fix the arch to each bracket. The arc gently pulls the braces, and the braces, in turn, pull the teeth, and they gradually occupy correct position in the dentition. Ceramic systems are installed on the front surface of the dentition.

Ceramic braces are white, so they blend into the enamel and are almost invisible in the mouth. The products are made from pressed ceramics and are highly durable. In terms of aesthetics and reliability, they are second only to sapphire designs. Ceramics do not change color over time under the influence of saliva and are not stained by food and drinks, and therefore serve well for a long period of time.

Treatment usually takes from 6 months to 2.5 years. The duration of wearing braces depends on the clinical situation in the oral cavity, the degree of malocclusion and age. The older a person is, the better his maxillofacial muscles have adapted to the position of his teeth, and the more difficult it will be to reconfigure this system. However, even in adulthood, it is possible and necessary to correct the bite - after all, an incorrect bite and non-physiological work of the maxillofacial muscles can cause uneven erasure of enamel, stomach pain due to problems with chewing food, and even headaches.

In addition, despite their strength, ceramic braces can chip. In this situation, you should visit a specialist and reinstall the product. Doctors recommend careful exercise hygiene care for the oral cavity and carry out professional hygiene every 2-3 months.

Types of ceramic braces

Ceramic bracket systems can be of two types:

  • Ligatures. Bracket systems in which the arch is attached to the clasps using rubber bands or wires are called ligature. They are more massive and noticeable to others. Although ceramic braces are light-colored and blend in with the tooth enamel, the ligatures can be noticeable. Therefore, such designs, compared to non-ligature ones, are more noticeable.
  • Unligated (self-ligating). They are distinguished by the absence of ligatures; the orthodontic arch is fixed in the clasps using a special mechanism. The bracket system consists of a minimum number of elements; they look neat and inconspicuous.

The presence of a large selection of braces on the dental market makes it possible to distinguish braces for teenagers and adults. Ceramic braces for persons 14-17 years old are smaller in size.

The most popular ceramic bracket systems are:

  1. Damon Clear from Ormco is a modern bracket system made of transparent ceramics that is almost invisible on the teeth. The products are made of polycrystalline wear-resistant material, and the system does not contain metal elements. The structure does not oxidize, is not saturated with pigments, and does not change color or shape for a long period of time.
  2. Clarity SL from 3M Unitek. The system consists of transparent ceramic braces and a metal orthodontic arch. The manufacturer produces both ligature and self-ligating braces. The products are made from fine ceramics with the addition of zirconium dioxide. Clarity SL are highly durable, aesthetically pleasing and compact.
  3. In-Ovation C by GAS. This is a non-ligation, highly effective system for the treatment of various malocclusions. It is distinguished by the presence of strong locks for the arc and the natural color of the material, thanks to the addition of porcelain to the composition. In the design, all edges are smoothed, making wearing the system very comfortable.
  4. QuicKlear from FORSTADENT - translucent self-ligating braces. The structures have excellent aesthetics and reliable fixation, thanks to a special base. The manufacturer promises to reduce treatment time and create ideal conditions for correcting the bite.

Installation of ceramic braces

Treatment with braces takes place in several stages:

  • Diagnosis of dental anomalies and selection of orthodontic apparatus;
  • Oral preparation and treatment dental diseases, holding professional hygiene oral cavity;
  • Installation of braces on teeth;
  • Wearing braces with periodic visits to the doctor for correction;
  • Removal of braces and period of consolidation of treatment results.

Installing braces takes about an hour and is an absolutely painless procedure, which consists of the following steps:

  • Install a mouth opener for convenient operation. This eliminates the need for the patient to keep his mouth open;
  • The surface of the teeth is treated with a special gel, which ensures reliable fixation of braces;
  • A bracket is attached to each tooth using special dental cement. The position of each lock is calculated and set by the doctor. Thanks to this, under the influence of a power arc, the tooth will move to the correct position;
  • Depending on the type of system, an orthodontic arch is installed, which is attached to each bracket.
  • If necessary, cheek locks and rings are placed on the molars.
  • The doctor gives advice and recommendations for care.

Pros and cons of ceramic braces

Ceramic braces have many advantages:

  • Strength. The products are made from finely divided ceramics, which are baked at high temperatures. Thanks to this, the material acquires strength and resistance to mechanical stress.
  • Aesthetics. Ceramic products merge with dental tissues and are practically invisible to others. Braces have a transparent structure. The big advantage is color stability - no change in color of the locks under the influence of food coloring and pigments.
  • Comfort. Thanks to the small size of the structures and smoothness, the treatment is comfortable. In addition to convenient use, patients note psychological comfort.
  • Quickly addictive. Getting used to ceramic products is quick and painless. The adaptation period usually lasts no more than 3-7 days. In this case, diction is almost never broken.
  • Productivity. Ceramic braces can eliminate most dental anomalies. The device effectively moves teeth into the correct position and aligns the bite.

However, ceramic systems also have several disadvantages. Despite the strength and resistance to stress, the products are still inferior to metal and sapphire braces. Under strong pressure, ceramics can chip, so the structure should be taken care of during treatment. Also, the braces may come off - in this case, you need to visit the doctor again and re-fix the braces. Another disadvantage of ceramics is the relatively high price aesthetic designs. But, taking into account all the properties and parameters of orthodontic devices, we can conclude that ceramic braces are the best option for occlusion correction in terms of price, aesthetics and quality of treatment.

Types of ceramic braces

Such braces, made of ceramics, can be vestibular (external) and lingual (internal). Exist different types ceramic braces, which differ not only in appearance, but also in their operating principle.

  1. Ligatures. Here the arc is attached using a ligature. The most common type of braces.
  2. Unligated. They are also called. Instead of ligatures, locks and other systems are used. Due to more complex mechanism the cost of non-ligature models is higher.

Ligature-free braces are good because they do not create additional friction. That is, the teeth move without unnecessary resistance. Getting used to it happens much faster. You need to visit a doctor for correction, etc. a couple of times a month.

Currently, ceramic non-ligature braces are produced by several large companies. Here are the most popular models:

Procedure

First of all, the doctor needs to find out what condition your teeth are in. Moreover, we are talking not only about the correct bite. A complete refurbishment and professional cleaning is carried out. After this, a cast is made. Modern clinics have equipment that allows you to create an accurate computer model of your teeth. Having studied it, the specialist sends instructions to the dental laboratory, where the manufacture is carried out. Each such product is customized individually.

The system is attached to the teeth using a special highly adhesive cementing material. At the end of the course, it is removed, and the surface of the enamel is cleaned of this substance and polished. The doctor talks about proper care for braces, recommends special teeth cleaning products, etc.

5 products for cleaning braces:

Problem areas between teeth with braces installed are cleaned with brushes. The bristles are arranged in a circle, penetrating into places where Toothbrush won't get there. Minus one, quick wear
The Swiss company CURAPROX produces brushes and toothbrushes that have been tested in practice and recommended by doctors. Soft bristles with an ergonomic shape clean braces effectively and efficiently
Ideal care for braces outside the home. Waxed dental floss with fluoride is the optimal solution for cleaning teeth with braces. Food remains can be easily removed with floss

About the pros and cons of ceramics

If we talk about the real advantages of ceramic models, they are obvious. This is aesthetics and convenience. There is no metallic taste in the mouth. No one is allergic to this material, despite the fact that it happens even to high-quality surgical steel and (attention!) titanium.

Combined braces are another possible option.

This material is less traumatic for the gums. This is a significant advantage over metal counterparts. Special grooves are applied on the inner (tooth) surface. With their help, it is possible to achieve better adhesion.

How do ceramic braces look on your teeth? White or transparent - very good. If a similar arch is used with them, then during a conversation your teeth will not attract the attention of strangers.

Of course, we can say that with close contact any correction systems are visible except. Either way, white ceramic braces with a white archwire will be almost invisible when you smile. However, it also depends on the natural color of your enamel. The doctor selects a shade specifically for your teeth.

Let's move on to the traditional fly in the ointment. If they tell you that such a correction system has no disadvantages, this is a lie. Even the most expensive models have them.

  1. Transparent ceramics are not diamonds. Because rough food mechanical damage etc. are the main threats. If any bracket can come off, then it is easier to break the “glass” than the metal part.
  2. The price is an obvious disadvantage. You don't just have to pay for beauty. The difference between metal and ceramics is obvious - one and a half times. Whether it's worth it is a difficult question.
  3. Another problem with transparent ceramics is staining. Berries, juices, coffee and tea are sources of future problems. Over the course of a year of wearing braces, they can change their color significantly. There are more modern materials that, according to experts, are not painted. It is worth clarifying this point with experienced specialists.
  4. Some patients who complain of enamel demineralization are forced to have their teeth treated after the procedure is completed.
  5. Many experts have come to the conclusion that ceramics may require a long period of time for effective bite correction.

It turns out that there are approximately the same number of pros and cons. Therefore, it is also impossible to say that this option is ideal. However, it is also necessary to take into account that metal analogues are also far from perfect. At the same time, ceramics are several times more convenient and aesthetically pleasing.

Ceramic braces - contraindications

The list of contraindications is exactly the same as for metal analogues:

  • mental illness;
  • advanced periodontal disease, causing increased tooth mobility;
  • caries on the front teeth;
  • chronic diseases of the heart, immune, endocrine system.

Before choosing a bite correction treatment, consult with an experienced orthodontist.

About prices

I won’t go into technical details, but I will say that the cheapest, although not bad, option is the American Reflections ceramic braces. Made from very decent polycrystalline ceramics and aluminum oxide. Durable and quite resistant to staining.

Damon Clear is a high-quality and popular option that will cost significantly less than sapphire (monocrystalline) ceramics.

Aspire is an expensive option. The price of this translucent ceramic model is due to the use of a gold-plated metal groove.

The average cost of installing ceramic braces in Moscow that I came across ranged from 45,000 rubles ($688) to 120,000 rubles ($1,800). The first amount is for a promotion, for both jaws. Higher ones are usually found.

Kiev residents write prices “from 5,000 hryvnia,” which corresponds to 200 dollars. The amount is not huge. But this, as usually happens, is without clarification. They don’t write about one or two jaws, they don’t indicate whether only the structure is included here or the work is also taken into account. Some cunning people (both in the Russian Federation and in Ukrainian clinics) write separately the price of the system itself, and somewhere lower, in smaller print, separately the work and services. As a result, a person comes and faces a “cruel reality.” This is what modern marketing in dentistry is like.

Opinions on ceramic bite correction systems

After surfing the Internet and spending a little time looking for reviews, I realized a few important things. Firstly, in the CIS there is great amount dental clinics, in which they undertake to carry out complex work, without really understanding them.

A beautiful smile is possible

Secondly, the population is completely unaware of the difference between braces different types. People divide them into “beautiful” and “ugly”, “expensive” and “cheap”. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of victims of incompetence. They are all now sure that nothing will help them.

At the same time, they come across reviews on sites and quite real people with before and after photos, which we were pleased with. Ceramic braces helped them get their teeth in order.

People note one big plus. When you stand in the cold, ceramics do not freeze in your mouth like metal. Injuries are many times less.

Not everyone understands that if you do not then wear a retainer and aligners, the problem will return and you will have to wear braces for another year. It's hard to go against physiology. There are many people who wore metal braces in their teens and then got ceramic braces in their twenties. They, like no one else, understand how much more convenient and pleasant the second option is in the mouth. This is not to mention the fact that the appearance of the translucent ceramic part is many times more pleasant and natural than that of its “” counterpart.

Nothing scratches your cheeks or lips from the inside, does not cause allergies, etc. That is, if you have something to compare with, you will immediately understand why modern ceramics are noticeably more expensive.

However, the choice is still yours. I can only wish you good luck and healthy teeth. Write and tell us about your experience. And don't forget to subscribe for updates!

Let us describe the possibility of changing the appearance of a smile using ceramic braces. We will tell you in more detail about the installation features and cost, and also provide photos and reviews of successful results of orthodontic treatment.

Reluctance to smile, communicate, make acquaintances, difficulties in promotion to more responsible positions, health problems - all these are consequences of an incorrect bite. It is not surprising that his professional correction comes to the fore.

Features of ceramic braces

This system refers to aesthetic orthodontic structures that can regulate the position of teeth in a row and bite. To do this, they are attached to the upper and lower jaws in accordance with the position of each unit. Braces take about two years to wear, sometimes longer, so it's not surprising that how they look comes to the fore.

Many people are shy metal systems who significantly spoil the appearance of their smile and even refuse treatment altogether because of this. With the advent of ceramic braces, the aesthetic problem was solved, because they are almost invisible on the teeth, and in some cases the elements are even made transparent.

Advantages and disadvantages

To understand how ceramic braces differ from metal and other similar structures, let’s highlight their main advantages:

  • aesthetic appearance, which is ensured by a similar shade of plates with natural enamel;
  • ease of adaptation, it goes much faster;
  • relative affordability of price compared to other “invisible” brace systems (, lingual, etc.);
  • ceramics do not cause allergies, do not oxidize and do not harm the body due to various fumes;
  • due to the smooth surface and rounded shape of each element, injury to hard and soft tissues in the mouth does not occur;
  • the selected shade of braces will remain the same several months after wearing, since it does not have the ability to change color;
  • They are easier to care for than, for example, metal structures.

And yet, such systems are not ideal and have their drawbacks:

  • although adaptation is faster than with other materials, initial rubbing and some discomfort cannot be avoided;
  • with ceramics, the correction of the position of the teeth will take a little longer;
  • the fixing elements themselves may be noticeable or stained by colored foods and drinks;
  • the fragility of the material leads to breakdowns.

Photos before and after

Design nuances

The whole system is in many ways similar to others made from different materials. It has the following elements:

  1. The plates themselves are attached to each individual tooth. IN in this case they are made of ceramic and are fixed with a special orthodontic adhesive.
  2. An arc that connects all elements to each other and makes them a single whole. It is she who is responsible for the pressure on the plates, which ensures the rotation of the tooth in the right side. Usually it is made of metal, but for those who are embarrassed by the appearance of braces, they are painted in the natural color of the enamel and then the entire structure with a white arch becomes completely invisible.
  3. The fastening system can be different. Doctors provide a choice of fixation with ligatures (rubber rings or metal wire) or without them (self-regulating system), using reliable miniature locks.

Kinds

Since the elements can be made of different materials, the following options for bracket systems are distinguished:

  • all-ceramic plates - when all parts are made of the same material and do not stand out in any way externally, but they are more fragile compared to other types;
  • system with metal locks - refers to a self-regulating fastening method; it keeps all elements in the desired position, significantly speeding up the correction process;
  • ceramic plates with metal grooves - this ligature fixation based on a more durable material is also reliable;
  • combined braces, where ceramics and metal are connected to each other, which significantly reduces their overall cost, but helps to quickly correct the bite.

By combining different materials in this way, you can achieve not only savings, but also correct defects in the best possible way. Yes, on visible part smiles are installed with ceramic plates, and the side ones are corrected with ordinary metal. This method is considered more reliable and speeds up the entire treatment process.

It is also worth talking about the most popular brands offering similar bite correction systems in order to better understand which one to choose:

  1. American -3 - a product of the Ormco company, non-ligature, so-called passive designs. Their peculiarity is that they have small size, are almost invisible during a conversation, and for ease of removal they are equipped with a special fixing clip.
  2. Clarity Advanced APC - specially designed for accelerated treatment due to the presence of a voltage concentrator. The fastening grooves are made of metal, which also ensures higher reliability and strength of the entire product. No orthodontic glue is used to fix the plates to the teeth, which significantly reduces installation time.
  3. Reflections is manufactured by Ortho Technology. These are ligature structures made in a special form called “dovetail”. They are easily attached to the jaw and do not require additional fixing elements. Wearing comfort is ensured by the small size of the plates.
  4. Mistique is a product from the American manufacturer GAC. Made of reinforced ceramics, which significantly affects their strength. Silicone coatings make the system almost transparent and invisible to others.
  5. QuickKlear are German designs based on a specially developed ceramic composition that is completely invisible on the teeth. In this case, metal clips with a self-adjusting base are used for fastening, and the plates are fitted to the teeth due to a special coating.

Installation of ceramic braces

In order to properly carry out complete orthodontic treatment, the doctor and the patient must go through a number of important stages:

  1. Examination of the oral cavity, identifying defects and problems and drawing up a correction plan.
  2. Treatment of dental diseases.
  3. The dentist creates a plaster model of the patient’s jaw and performs X-ray diagnostics.
  4. It is very important to carry out, remove tartar and eliminate possible bacteria in hard-to-reach places before installing braces.
  5. Next, the installation process itself occurs, during which the surface of the teeth is treated in a special way, plates are attached to it using glue or clasps and a photopolymer lamp.
  6. They tighten the entire system with an arc, fixing it in the chosen way - with or without ligatures. The edges of the remaining wire are bitten off with pliers.

Feelings after procedures

Although the installation process takes longer than an hour, it is painless for the patient. The most difficult period is considered to be the period of adaptation, when two days after fixing the plates, discomfort– pain when chewing, a feeling of tension in the jaw. Doctors recommend eating only soft and pureed food at this time.

Sometimes adaptation is accompanied by rubbing of the mucous membrane, which is easily eliminated with special orthodontic wax. After applying it to the affected areas, the healing process is accelerated and over time soft fabrics get used to the product.

How to care?

Many patients are concerned about the question, and? It should be noted that depending on the complexity of the defect and the magnitude of the malocclusion, treatment may last different period, but usually it is 2-3 years.

Caring for braces is not particularly complicated, but it requires following some rules:

  • In order to maintain the integrity of the ceramic plates, you should avoid solid products;
  • It is also impossible to achieve a clean surface if you eat sticky foods - prunes, chewing gum, toffees, etc.;
  • after each meal, it is advisable to clean the interdental spaces and rinse the oral cavity with an antibacterial solution;
  • You will now have to treat the surface of your teeth not with a brush, but with a special brush, holding it vertically for improved cleaning of the entire surface;
  • for better treatment, doctors also recommend using an irrigator;
  • It is forbidden to regularly come to the dentist for examination, especially if there is a suspicion that any element is broken; it is prohibited to repair or correct the structure yourself.

With an adequate attitude and avoidance of overloading the system, it is possible to achieve its long-term operation, when repairs are not required at all during the entire treatment period.

Price

To determine how much ceramic bracket systems cost, you need to focus on the pricing policy of the clinic where you will install them, the type of design and fastening you choose, as well as the manufacturer. In each option price will vary.

Here are the average figures for Moscow:

These are the minimum amounts that will have to be spent on installing the structure on one jaw. Although there are VIP dentistries where the cost will be twice as high.

From this article you will learn:

  • which models of ceramic braces are better,
  • ceramic braces - reviews, disadvantages,
  • ceramic braces: price in different clinics in Moscow (as of 2018).

Ceramic braces differ from traditional teeth-straightening braces only in that they are made of ceramic (which can be white or translucent) rather than metal. Therefore, such braces are much less noticeable on the teeth to others.

There are two types of ceramic braces

  • The first ones are made from polycrystalline aluminum oxide. In this case, the braces will be white and have low transparency (Fig. 1-3).
  • The latter are made from single-crystalline aluminum oxide, which is often called single-crystalline sapphire. Braces made of such material will have very high transparency, and they are most often called sapphire braces (Fig. 4-6).

Features of ceramic bracket systems –

The ceramic bracket system consists of three elements: firstly, of ceramic plates that are attached to the teeth being moved (they are called braces), secondly, of a metal arch with which the braces are connected to each other, and thirdly - systems for attaching the arch to the braces.

1. Ceramic plates (braces) –

The plates of ceramic braces can only be fixed on the front surface of the teeth. This is how they differ from metal braces, which can be placed not only on the outside, but also on the inside of the dentition. Most manufacturers make ceramic braces from aluminum oxide, which is not much inferior in hardness to metal, and in addition has good aesthetics.

Ceramic braces are resistant to discoloration and do not stain at all over time. On teeth of lighter shades, translucent braces (sapphire) look best, and on teeth of dark and yellowish shades, opaque braces made of classic ceramics will look better.

Braces can be made entirely of ceramic, or a combination of materials can be used. Thus, the following types of braces can be distinguished:

  • All-ceramic braces (Fig. 7) –
    for example, these include Clarity Advanced and Damon clear braces. Of course, the best aesthetics are observed with all-ceramic braces. Clarity Advanced refers to braces with a ligature type of fixation of the arch in the bracket slot, and Damon clear refers to braces with non-ligature fixation (an explanation of the types of fixation will be given below).
  • Ceramic braces with a metal lock (Fig. 8) –
    An example is the In-Ovation-C braces, in which the bracket body and archwire slot are made entirely of ceramic, but there is a hinged metal latch on top (which securely holds the archwire in the bracket slot). These braces are non-ligature.
  • Ceramic braces with a metal groove (Fig. 9) –
    An example is “Clarity” braces, in which the groove for the metal arch is made of metal, and a ligature type of fixation of the arch in the groove of the braces is also implemented.
  • Ceramic braces with a combination of metal groove + metal lock (Fig. 10) –
    examples are non-ligation type braces such as Clarity SL and Damon 3. It must be said that the aesthetics of such braces will be slightly worse than that of all-ceramic braces.

2. Metal arc –

It connects the braces to each other, passing through each bracket. The arch transmits through the braces a certain force (pressure) on the teeth, which they need to move. The arch is attached to the brace plates: either with the help of special ligatures (rubber rings or wire, or by means of special locking fasteners on the surface of the braces.

The metal arc is made of ordinary metal and is therefore clearly visible. However, if the patient wishes, a metal arc coated with a special white composite composition can be used. Such an arch will be much less noticeable against the background of the teeth, but will cost a little more.

3. Ligature and non-ligature fastening of the arch to the braces –

Today, there are two main systems for fastening the arch: using ligatures (rubber rings or metal wire), and using special locking fasteners on the surface of the bracket plates. This is a very important point, because... The effectiveness of treatment also depends on it.

  • Ligature braces
    With this fastening system, the arch is first inserted into a groove laid in the body of the bracket, and then fixed in this groove using special ligatures. Special rubber rings or metal wire can serve as ligatures. Bracket systems that use such elastic bands for fastening are called “ligature.”

    The elastic bands themselves can be not only colored, but also white or translucent. Then they are not very noticeable, like the white ceramic plates of braces. But if you drink a lot of coffee, tea or wine, or smoke, then light-colored rubber bands may change color. They will be changed for you every month - during each new visit to the orthodontist for correction.

  • Non-ligating (self-ligating) braces
    As the name suggests, there are no ligatures in the design of such braces. There is a special snap lock on the surface of these braces. Fixation is very simple: the arch is inserted into the groove of the bracket, and a special lock is snapped on top, which holds the arch quite reliably.

    These braces are, of course, more expensive. Dental factories that produce these brace systems position them as a new word in orthodontics. In addition, more expensive braces are beneficial for orthodontists themselves. Now on the Internet there is a lot of information on the unconditional advantages of non-ligature braces over ligature ones, which, to put it mildly, does not correspond to reality.

    To learn why non-ligature braces are not a panacea, and why ligature braces are better, read the article: “How to choose the right braces”

Ceramic braces: reviews

1) Advantages –
if it is important for you that your braces are invisible, then ceramic braces will be the most good choice. They are hardly noticeable even close up, and are practically invisible at a distance, as well as in photographs. If you are confused by the classic metal arch, then for a little more money they can supply you with a matte shade, or a metal arch lined with white composite material.

It is very important to choose the right ceramic braces -
Opaque ceramic braces look good on darker teeth. On lighter-colored teeth, translucent ceramic braces made of monocrystalline aluminum oxide (monocrystalline sapphire) look best.

2) Disadvantages –
firstly, ceramic braces (both ligature and non-ligature) are much larger than most modern models of metal braces. This means more severe irritation the mucous membranes of the lips and cheeks, which they will initially injure, and therefore a longer period of adaptation to braces.

If we compare the speed of orthodontic treatment with ceramic and metal braces, it is almost the same (ceramic ones are only slightly less). The downside may be that in some clinical situations it is impossible to use ceramic braces on the lower jaw. Another disadvantage is the higher cost of treatment (see below).

And the third point... Unligated ceramic braces made entirely of ceramics have a slightly lower degree of reliability, which is associated with the risk of breaking the ceramic locking fastening. Therefore, orthodontists usually place slightly lighter loads on such braces in order to prevent breakage of such a ceramic lock (24stoma.ru).

Comparison of ceramic braces with other types of braces

If we compare ligature ceramic braces, reviews from orthodontists and patients agree that these braces are as strong and reliable as metal ones, but at the same time they are much more invisible on the teeth.

Table 1

Ceramic/ sapphire braces Metal braces Lingual braces
Aesthetics high low perfect
Reliability high very high low
Treatment speed high high low

In addition to the fact that you need to somehow make a choice between ceramic, metal and lingual braces, you still need to make right choice between braces models from different manufacturers. To find out whether there are important differences between braces from different companies and which ones are better to choose, read the articles:

Ceramic braces: price 2018

The price range is very wide. The cost of ceramic braces in different clinics can vary by almost 1.5 times, so it’s worth spending a little time searching optimal option clinics. The cost of braces will depend not only on the pricing policy of the clinic, but also on the list of works included in the price, as well as the qualifications of the orthodontist.

1) Cost of initial consultation and diagnosis –

  • Consultation with an orthodontist is usually free,
  • diagnostics (this includes: taking impressions, analysis of diagnostic models, calculation of TRG, analysis of orthopantomogram, drawing up detailed plan treatment) - about 1600 rubles.

Below we have calculated average cost ceramic braces in Moscow. The price already includes: installation of braces on 2 jaws, a wire retainer (the price of which is approximately 16,000 rubles), all work on fixation and removal (error ±10,000 rubles).

3) Ligature ceramic braces: price

  • ceramic braces with a metal groove - about 40-50 thousand rubles.
  • “Reflections” braces – price RUB 135,000.
  • “Clarity Advanced” braces – price RUB 175,000.
  • “Inspire ICE” braces (transparent) – price RUB 150,000.

4) Non-ligating (self-ligating) ceramic braces: price

  • “In-Ovation-C” braces – price 130,000 rubles,
  • “Damon clear” braces (translucent) – price RUB 160,000.
  • “Clarity SL” braces – price RUB 185,000.
  • semi-ceramic braces “Damon 3” (with a metal lock) – price about 175,000 rubles.

5) Monthly correction sessions cost approximately 2000 – 2500 rubles.

Do ceramic braces change color?

Ceramic braces are a hit at the moment. Despite the fact that treatment with their use is more expensive, many patients are willing to pay more. Aesthetics are trending right now, and ceramic braces are beautiful! In this regard, patients ask themselves: How long will this beauty last? Should braces change their original color? Won't they darken? Since this issue worries patients, it is worth giving this an expert assessment. Naturally, I will express my personal opinion.

Ceramic braces

It always seemed to me that ceramic braces do not change color, just as a ceramic cup or plate does not change color. But if the cup is not washed after drinking tea, then over time it will turn black. Take detergents, rub the cup with a sponge and the cup will become white again. The same thing happens with ceramic braces. Since ceramics has a certain degree of transparency, pigmented (dark) plaque accumulating on the tooth and the surface of the bracket above and below the wings affects its color.

Let's try to be as objective as possible to make an assessment possible change braces colors. Let's take the case of treating a patient with ceramic braces, when the installation of equipment on the upper and lower dentition was carried out with an interval of 6 months.

The situation before installing the braces system.

Remove markings.

Situation after 6 months. We install the equipment on the lower row of teeth.

How can you evaluate such a photo? Braces upper jaw served for 6 months. The bottom one was just installed.

Let's not pay attention to the upper wire arch. The arc is covered with Teflon coating. The coating is not durable and can withstand 2-3 months of use. As a rule, each orthodontic arch is used for a limited time, so during the course of treatment, successive new arches are installed, with or without coating, at the request of the patient.

Let's pay attention only to the locks. Upper and lower dental braces look different. The lower ones are a purer, white color. The upper ones look relatively gray. The lower ones are bright, the upper ones are faded. The first conclusions are that ceramic braces change color. But let's continue the experiment. Let’s not remove the markings and look at how the situation changes after 4 days.

After 4 days the picture changed a lot. The appearance of ceramic locks of the lower and upper dentition is practically the same.

We change the arch on the upper jaw and clean only the teeth of the upper row.

And now, after cleaning the teeth, the braces installed on the upper jaw and functioning for 6 months look whiter and brighter than the braces on the lower dentition installed 4 days ago.

But in general, it should be noted that, like all things on Earth, new braces have a brighter, more presentable appearance.

Comparison of braces color in the lateral area

The situation in the lateral segment of the dentition is no different from the frontal segment.

For those who are planning to install a ceramic brace system, please note that metal locks are used on the molars.

Conclusion

Ceramic braces do not change their color during use, but they change their appearance due to the deposition of food pigments on their surface and the surface of the teeth. The worse the oral hygiene, the less attractive the ceramic braces system looks in the oral cavity.

P.S. High-quality teeth cleaning and careful oral care: preserves your health; Makes the braces system less noticeable on your teeth; brings positive emotions To your orthodontist.

Treatment is expensive, may be accompanied by pain and discomfort, after braces you need to wear mouth guards for a long time

Greetings to all!

They say that every person has complexes. Look at the girl, she seems to be perfect in everything: her figure and face are beautiful, but I’m sure that there is something in her head that has always confused her. If this is familiar to you, then you will understand me too. Since childhood, my huge complex has been a smile, or rather the lack thereof. I just didn't smile because I was shy. Naturally, this also influenced the development of my character. Most often, a person who is embarrassed about something will be less sociable and withdrawn into himself. I draw these conclusions from my own example.

I decided to get braces when I was 22 years old. At this time, I had the means and an opportunity that I simply could not miss. Before the installation, all my family tried to dissuade me, but I didn’t listen to anyone and now I don’t regret it at all.

It was possible to install metal, ceramic or sapphire braces. I chose ceramic ones. The deciding factor for me was the aesthetic side. Such braces are less visible on the teeth and are not noticeable. Since I work as a teacher, I wanted to be at least somewhat different from my children, who also wear braces.

Preparing to install braces

I have very narrow upper and lower jaws, so before installing braces, the orthodontist recommended widening them. This was actually the beginning of my treatment. I was given a palatal expander (a plate to widen the jaw), which I had to wear for about six months. But in reality, I lived with her for about two months. This is very unpleasant and many problems arise (the main one is the inability to speak normally). After that, they cleaned my teeth with special means, removed tartar, and then a date was set for installing braces.

Another step in installing braces was the removal of teeth. Often, orthodontists remove wisdom teeth to move the remaining teeth toward the empty space. But my doctor removed two quads on my left (top and bottom). The removal was painless and I only experienced discomfort after the procedure, because there was a lot of empty space in my mouth. The teeth were removed a week and a half apart.

The photo below is not for the faint of heart. My sad reality 9 months ago and after this time

Cost of braces

Of course, ceramic ones are much more expensive than metal ones, namely twice as much. But the prices in our city are quite reasonable (I know, because I compared them with other clinics). Metal braces for one jaw cost 3,200 hryvnia, ceramic braces - 6,400 (22,400 rubles). I repeat, prices are only for one jaw, that is, two will cost twice as much. I have ceramic braces on both jaws. There are cases when you can combine, this is at your discretion and in agreement with your doctor.

Installation of braces

This is a rather labor-intensive and lengthy process. I spent about an hour and a half in the dentist's chair. First, the teeth are coated with a special liquid that has Strong smell and sour in taste. It is kept on the teeth for some time, and after that glue is applied, onto which special ceramic plates are glued, to which the arch will be attached.

The only inconvenience is that you need to keep your mouth open for a long time. Although this is helped by a special device that needs to be bitten, the lips will stick out so as not to cover the teeth. It’s a bit of a pressure, but it’s all bearable.

None pain no during installation.

First days

The first days of life in braces

Now for me these are just memories, but still not distant. At first, life with braces can be a lot of inconvenience. But if you have a great desire to smile beautifully, then you can withstand anything. Imagine that your teeth have become twice as thick and they are not smooth, but rough. During a conversation, the lips move, causing abrasions on the inside that can hurt and burn. Plus, a metal arc (even if it is thin) also makes itself felt in a very unpleasant form. But I hasten to console you, this lasts for the first two weeks, and after that everything will be fine with your lips.

When braces are installed, the teeth tighten and even immediately become straighter. This is very pleasing, but is accompanied by aching pain. The teeth are constantly affected by the arc, they move, and this provokes pain. For some time, such pain did not allow me to sleep or eat, so I took painkillers and ate only liquid and soft food.

Dental hygiene with braces

From the first days you need to have a special brush and brushes (

here you can see my favorites

). The brush should have special short bristles in the middle to clean the braces without damaging them too much. I can tell you from experience that you can use any brush. At first I bought a special one, but because they stopped delivering them to the pharmacy, I switched to regular ones. There were no problems. Brushes are needed to clean the interdental spaces (this applies even to those who do not wear braces), as well as part of the teeth under the arch. This should not be neglected, since brushes are the best for cleaning teeth and preventing them from darkening.

This is important, because if you don’t brush your teeth after every meal, a lot of germs will form, the braces will darken (more on this below), and an unpleasant odor will arise. Food particles can remain under the brackets, which is also unsightly.

Can ceramic braces darken?

I read a lot about this even before they were installed for me, but I constantly came across conflicting opinions. My orthodontist said that the braces themselves do not darken. I could verify this myself. The bract plates themselves really don’t darken, but the ligatures (special rubber bands that are held in place by an arch on the plate) always (!) turn yellow. After eating or drinking tea, the ligatures turn yellow. But I had them changed every two weeks, so I never had too dark teeth. If you always brush your teeth thoroughly, the ligatures will remain transparent. They darken if you are too lazy to brush your teeth thoroughly or brush without brushes.

Regular doctor appointments

I think you know that you will have to visit the orthodontist very often. To be honest, I love dentists, although I have always had problems with my teeth. Perhaps because my doctor is very kind.

I pay absolutely nothing for every appointment with him. I paid the main amount one time, everything else is included in the price.

At the appointment they changed my ligatures. It hurts a little when you put pressure on your teeth. After this, aching pain is felt for about two days.

The arch may also be changed at the appointment. It’s painless, but at the same time I also change the rubber bands, I wrote about this above.

For a long time, they put rubber bands on my braces, which pulled my teeth to the place where there were no teeth, in order to tighten the empty space. This was also accompanied by pain (for about a week). However, cracks may appear in some places.

Also, my teeth were bound with thin wire, which was wrapped in a spiral around the braces. It's not particularly noticeable, but it does tighten the teeth.

Now I wear elastic bands that connect my upper and lower jaws. They say this is the final stage of treatment. They are worn to straighten the bite. They need to be changed every day. The dentist provides rubber bands free of charge. Putting them on and taking them off is very simple, the main thing is to know which teeth, although everything is clear there too.

How long to wear braces?

Even your attending physician will not answer this question. It all depends on the specific situation. I wear braces for 9 months on the upper jaw and 8 months on the lower jaw.

I will gradually add photos as the treatment progresses.

A month has passed of wearing the elastic bands that you saw in the photo above. They changed the arch for me and gave me a thicker and more noticeable one. The teeth were well tightened, but I hardly noticed any pain.

This is what it looks like now

The teeth became a semicircle, as it should be. Previously, they stood roughly in the form of a rectangle.

Since I'm already at the finish line, I can draw some conclusions. Firstly, I will say that I do not regret the money spent. Secondly, braces can correct even the saddest history of teeth and the result will only please you.

Of course, some conveniences may arise, but it's not all that bad.

If you have already left adolescence, this is not a reason to be upset and every day looking in the mirror, it’s sad to think that beautiful smile you don't have a chance. Everything is in your hands and you just have to want it.

Ceramic braces just make me look better, and I love it. My teeth became straighter after the first weeks and I was able to smile. By the way, you will have to smile widely with braces, because hiding them with your lips can sometimes be painful, and it’s very easy to scratch the inside of your lips.

UPDATE

A year and 17 days later, my braces were removed. It turned out that I wore them for a little over a year on the upper jaw, and a little less on the lower jaw. But everything was in emergency mode for me due to the move.

Top photos - immediately after removal

Lower ones - a day later they made mouth guards

It is necessary to wear mouthguards because teeth quickly move back. In one day they even moved a little, so the aligners sat tight. Now I wear them regularly, so putting them on and taking them off is not difficult. The trays completely outline the contour of the teeth, covering them with a dense silicone shell.

Discomfort occurs, but not too much. At first, speech sounds may be distorted.

I paid 600 hryvnia for two mouth guards.

You can install non-removable retainers that will keep the teeth in the desired position; they are on the inside, so they are not visible, but speech will suffer. And they need to be changed every five years. In addition, brushing your teeth will be complicated.

If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them. Perhaps I missed something, but I wanted to tell you a little about everything.

Thank you for your attention!

Many people are embarrassed by metal systems, which significantly spoil the appearance of their smile, and even refuse treatment altogether because of this. With the advent of ceramic braces, the aesthetic problem was solved, because they are almost invisible on the teeth, and in some cases the elements are even made transparent.

Advantages and disadvantages

To understand how ceramic braces differ from metal and other similar structures, let’s highlight their main advantages:

  • aesthetic appearance, which is ensured by a similar shade of plates with natural enamel;
  • ease of adaptation, it goes much faster;
  • relative affordability of price compared to other “invisible” bracket systems (sapphire, lingual, etc.);
  • ceramics do not cause allergies, do not oxidize and do not harm the body due to various fumes;
  • due to the smooth surface and rounded shape of each element, injury to hard and soft tissues in the mouth does not occur;
  • the selected shade of braces will remain the same several months after wearing, since it does not have the ability to change color;
  • They are easier to care for than, for example, metal structures.

And yet, such systems are not ideal and have their drawbacks:

  • although adaptation is faster than with other materials, initial rubbing and some discomfort cannot be avoided;
  • with ceramics, the correction of the position of the teeth will take a little longer;
  • the fixing elements themselves may be noticeable or stained by colored foods and drinks;
  • the fragility of the material leads to breakdowns.

Photos before and after

Design nuances

The whole system is in many ways similar to others made from different materials. It has the following elements:

  1. The plates themselves are attached to each individual tooth. In this case, they are made of ceramic and are fixed using special orthodontic glue.
  2. An arc that connects all elements to each other and makes them a single whole. It is she who is responsible for the pressure on the plates, which ensures the rotation of the tooth in the desired direction.

  • all-ceramic plates - when all parts are made of the same material and do not stand out in any way externally, but they are more fragile compared to other types;
  • system with metal locks - refers to a non-ligature, self-regulating fastening method; it keeps all elements in the desired position, significantly speeding up the correction process;
  • ceramic plates with metal grooves - this ligature fixation based on a more durable material is also reliable;
  • combined braces, where ceramics and metal are connected to each other, which significantly reduces their overall cost, but helps to quickly correct the bite.

By combining different materials in this way, not only savings can be achieved, but also defects can be corrected in the best possible way. So, ceramic plates are installed on the visible part of the smile, and the side part is corrected with ordinary metal. This method is considered more reliable and speeds up the entire treatment process.

It is also worth talking about the most popular brands offering similar bite correction systems in order to better understand which one to choose:

  1. American Damon-3 - a product of the Ormco company, non-ligature, so-called passive structures. Their peculiarity is that they are small in size, almost invisible during a conversation, and for ease of removal they are equipped with a special fixing clip.

  4. It is very important to carry out professional cleaning, remove tartar and eliminate possible bacteria in hard-to-reach places.

The most difficult period of adaptation is considered to be the period when, two days after the plates are fixed, unpleasant sensations begin - pain when chewing, a feeling of tension in the jaw. Doctors recommend eating only soft and pureed food at this time.

Sometimes adaptation is accompanied by rubbing of the mucous membrane, which is easily eliminated with special orthodontic wax. After applying it to the affected areas, the healing process accelerates and over time the soft tissues get used to the product.

How to care?

Many patients are concerned about the question of how long to wear such systems and how to clean the teeth and the structure itself? It should be noted that depending on the complexity of the defect and the magnitude of the malocclusion, treatment can last a different period, but usually it is 2-3 years.

Caring for braces is not particularly complicated, but it requires following some rules:

  • In order to maintain the integrity of the ceramic plates, you should avoid solid products;
  • It is also impossible to achieve a clean surface if you eat sticky foods - prunes, chewing gum, toffees, etc.;
  • It is advisable to use it after every meal dental floss to clean the interdental spaces and rinse the mouth with an antibacterial solution;
  • You will now have to treat the surface of your teeth not with a brush, but with a special brush, holding it vertically for improved cleaning of the entire surface;
  • for better treatment, doctors also recommend using an irrigator;
