Needles in winter. Planting, cutting and caring for conifers in winter. Planting conifers with seeds

The beauty of landscape design with this culture is simply difficult to describe in words. Bright green colors in combination with multi-colored spots of flowers are favorably set off by snow-white deutzia, which, like drifts of snow, covers individual areas of the garden.

Grow it unusual plant not difficult, since planting and care does not require much effort or expense. All you need to do is find a suitable place for planting and remember to cover it in time for the winter. And the action in full force will delight you with its lush flowering.

In this article we will look at the features and description of the action, learn about the most popular types and varieties of this elegant plant. We will also tell you in more detail about the main nuances of agricultural technology for growing Asian aristocrat.

Features and description of the action

Deutzia belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family and is a deciduous and evergreen perennial woody plant. The natural habitat of this culture is Central America, in particular Mexico, the Himalayas and East Asia. to his appearance action resembles blooming Japanese cherry blossoms, which are covered with a thick blanket of openwork numerous flowers exuding a wonderful aroma. It is for this decorative effect that gardeners all over the world fell in love with deutzia.

Today there are about 50 species of this wonderful plant. Deutzia appeared in Europe in the 19th century thanks to Dutch traders who brought this crop from Japan. Since then, the deutzia bush has become one of the most popular elements of landscape design throughout Europe, including in Russia.

The Asian beauty received its name thanks to the Swedish scientist Carl Thunberg, who named the action in honor of the mayor of Amsterdam, Johann van Deitz, who invested a lot of money in traveling to the East.

Description of the action:

  • Deutzia is a deciduous or evergreen plant, it all depends on the specific species and variety.
  • In nature, it can be found in coniferous, broadleaf and oak forests, and sometimes even grows at elevations up to 1500 m.
  • This ornamental shrub, which reaches a height of 0.5-2 meters, specimens up to 4 m can be found in nature.
  • The shape of the stems that form the shrub can be erect or spreading. Depending on such features, deutia can be used in various ways when decorating a site.
  • Due to its large branching, deutia lends itself well to pruning, which allows you to create a beautiful crown shape and use this plant to create a hedge.
  • All branches and shoots are initially covered with brown bark, which over time acquires a gray tint. The bark of the deutia may peel off.
  • The leaves are oblong in shape with jagged edges, pointed towards the apex, reach 6 cm in length, and are located opposite. The color ranges from light green to dark green, and yellowish-brown in autumn.
  • Deutzia blooms on last year's shoots, so it is necessary to be scrupulous in covering the shrub for the winter. If the shoots freeze, you are unlikely to see a blooming deutsia next year.
  • The flowers are small, white, cream or pink. Collected in thyroid or racemose inflorescences up to 7 cm in length. They have no smell.
  • On the territory of Russia, deytsia begins to bloom at the end of May and flowering lasts for 10-16 days, in some varieties up to 1 month.
  • The fruit of the deutia is a yellowish-brown ball-shaped capsule containing small seeds inside.
  • This culture is distinguished by its relative drought resistance and unpretentiousness to soil and care. However, if there is no shelter in winter, it may freeze. Although the action has a unique feature of quickly recovering.
  • Suitable for single planting, for creating hedges and for planting in tubs.

Popular types and varieties of deutzia

In total, there are about 50 species of deutia in nature, some of which are representatives of decorative garden forms. Let's take a closer look at the most popular and sought-after types and varieties of deutzia.

  • Captivity. This variety of deutzia rough is quite different tall- up to 3-4 m. Very spreading shrub, blooms with white double flowers.

Most types of deutia were created by crossing the main and most common species: graceful, Amur, rough.

Methods of propagation

Deutzia can be propagated vegetatively and by seeds; the chosen method will depend on your preferences and capabilities. Let's look at each method in more detail.

Propagation by seeds

This method is rarely used. It is suitable for species varieties, since in the case of hybrids all the maternal characteristics of the shrub may be lost.

  • First of all, you need to collect the seeds. They ripen around the end of September or beginning of October.
  • Select the ripest fruits and extract the seeds from them. They are stored until spring, until sowing.
  • The seeds do not need preliminary preparation.
  • Select a suitable container and fill it with nutritious soil, which should consist of humus, sand and peat.
  • There is no need to bury the seeds; they are simply sown on the surface of the soil and lightly sprinkled with a thin layer of river sand.
  • The container must be covered with glass or film to create greenhouse conditions.
  • Care consists of constantly moistening the soil.
  • Shoots will appear within 1-1.5 months, after which they are planted in open ground.

Propagation by green cuttings

This method is one of the most common.

  • You need to start harvesting cuttings in June.
  • On a healthy and strong bush, choose thick and mature shoots.
  • Cuttings are harvested approximately 10-12 cm.
  • Before planting, you can treat them with special preparations to stimulate root formation.
  • To root cuttings, select containers that are spacious enough and fill them with nutritious soil consisting of fertile soil and sand.
  • Green cuttings must be buried 0.5 cm into the soil, slightly tilted.
  • All containers are placed in greenhouses.
  • Deutia cuttings have almost 100% rooting.
  • In the spring, cuttings can be planted for growing in open ground.

Propagation by lignified cuttings

The second option for propagating action is by cuttings.

  • For this method, cuttings need to be harvested in late autumn.
  • One cutting should be 15-20 cm in length. And it must have at least 3 buds.
  • The required number of cuttings is collected into a bundle and fastened together.
  • Next, the entire bunch is placed in a container with wet sand and stored in a dark and cold room, where the temperature is approximately 0 degrees.
  • In the spring, cuttings are planted in greenhouses or hotbeds and grown like green ones.

Reproduction by layering

Deutia can be propagated by layering. In the spring, choose the strongest and healthiest shoots on the bush that are as close to the ground as possible. You need to dig small grooves under the bush and bend the selected shoots to them. Next, sprinkle with soil, leaving only the top. After the cuttings have rooted, they are disconnected and transplanted to a permanent place.

Reproduction by dividing the bush

Most often, this propagation method is used for heavily overgrown deutia bushes. You must carefully dig up the bush and use a sharp knife or pruning shears to disconnect several parts. The main thing is that each part has healthy and strong roots. The resulting parts of the plant must be planted immediately in prepared places, since the roots cannot dry out.

Root shoots may appear on the root system of the deutia, which can be detached and replanted in another place. This should be done in the spring.

Stages of preparation before planting action

To obtain a beautiful and ornamental plant that long years will decorate your site, it is important to prepare carefully. It is necessary to select high-quality planting material and correctly determine the planting location. Also important is the preparation of the soil at the future planting site.

Stage 1. Selection of deytsia seedlings

Well-selected seedlings guarantee a healthy and strong plant in the future. Purchase planting material from specialized stores or nurseries. It is not recommended to buy seedlings at spontaneous markets or along the roads, as you may end up with something completely different from what you wanted.

When purchasing, carefully inspect the seedlings. They should not be damaged or show signs of diseases or pests. All young plants should have healthy kidneys. Seedlings can be purchased with an open root system and a closed one. The two options have their pros and cons. Open root system allows you to carefully examine the roots for the presence of shriveled parts; the closed root system allows you not to rush into planting in open ground.

Stage 2. Selecting a location

Deytsia prefers to grow in open areas that have protection from the open midday sun. Slightly shaded areas with nearby trees are suitable. This creates the air humidity necessary for the shrub. The location should also be well protected from strong cold winds.

Before choosing a place for planting, decide on the composition you want to end up with. With the help of action you can create a hedge, or you can use it in single plantings.

Stage 3. Soil preparation

To obtain a beautiful and lush shrub, select a site with fertile and light soil. It is acceptable for it to grow on clay soils with moderate moisture. Remember, the close occurrence of groundwater is unacceptable for the action. Before planting, carefully dig up the selected area so that the soil is filled with oxygen and becomes looser and lighter. The ideal soil for the full growth of deutzia should consist of compost soil, humus and sand.

Planting action in open ground

With the onset of spring, you can begin planting deutia seedlings in open ground.

Planting process:

  • Add some fertilizer to the soil before planting. Suitable for each plant are 100 grams of nitrophoska and 1 bucket of compost.
  • Prepare the seedlings as well. If the root system is slightly dry, then a couple of hours before planting, place the planting material in a clay mash. You can also lightly trim the roots.
  • Next, take care of the planting holes. The depth of each should be approximately 0.5 m. If you plant several deutia seedlings in one row, then you must maintain some distance between them. Approximately between the holes there should be from 1.5 m to 2.5 m.
  • Place a layer of 10-15 cm of drainage at the bottom of each planting hole. Use broken brick or expanded clay, small stones or gravel for drainage.
  • Next, the roots of the seedlings are lowered into the hole and carefully sprinkled with soil mixture.
  • Remember that the root collar of the seedling must remain level with the ground surface. Allow a depth of 1-2 cm.
  • After planting, compact the soil well and water thoroughly.
  • The last step in the process of planting action will be mulching the tree trunk circle. Use dry peat or sawdust as mulch.
  • To stimulate shoot growth, you can trim the tops.

Features of caring for action in open ground

After proper planting, you will only need to occasionally pay attention to the Asian beauty and she will delight you with abundant and lush flowering. Caring for the action will not be difficult, the main thing is to do everything in moderation and not to overdo it.

Watering action

Deutzia is quite drought-resistant, so it can perfectly for a long time do without water. However, flowering in this case will be poor and short-lived. Optimal mode Watering for this crop will be once a week. In dry times, you can increase the norm to 2 buckets. The main thing is that the ground is saturated with moisture to a depth of 50 cm. During rainy days, you can cover the tree trunk circle with waterproof material, because this plant does not like stagnant water. All watering stops in mid-August, when the plant begins to prepare for winter.

Loosening and mulching action

Loosening is mandatory for action after each watering and rain. This is necessary to saturate the soil with oxygen. While loosening, remove all emerging weeds. To reduce the amount of loosening, the soil around the plant can be constantly mulched. Use dry peat, sawdust or tree bark as mulch.

Feeding action

All fertilizing must be applied only during flowering. Every month, under each bush, you can add liquid manure dissolved in water. 1-2 times per season you can feed the plant with superphosphate or complex mineral fertilizers.

Action trimming

Pruning the deutia allows you to give the bush a regular and decorative shape. This crop requires pruning twice a season: in spring and autumn or late summer. In the spring, it is necessary to remove all damaged and broken branches with sharp pruning shears. Shoots that have frozen over the winter are also shortened.

After flowering has ended, all branches that had flower buds must be cut back to young shoots. You need to shorten it by about a quarter, so it will begin to branch. Conduct this procedure you need a sharp knife or pruning shears.

Pest and disease control action

A distinctive feature of the action is its resistance to damage various diseases and the appearance of pests. Only sometimes can shrubs be affected by the proboscis, which damages the branches and leaves of the plant. To combat it, special drugs are used, for example, karbofos.

Shelter for the winter

The main problem in growing this crop is proper shelter for the winter. After all, quite often the shoots of this shrub on which buds appear freeze. Because of this, the action may not bloom. You can cover it with straw and fallen leaves. With the help of these materials the tree trunk circle is closed. You can start insulating in late autumn. Pay special attention to young seedlings. You can also use coniferous spruce branches or any cardboard boxes for shelter. Some varieties of deutia require more careful covering, for which burlap or spunbond is used. The main thing is not to forget to remove the cover in time in April so that the root system of the bush does not die.

Using action in landscape design

Deutzia is an ideal option for decorating and landscaping a site. Maybe a large number of options for using the action:

  • Single plantings of shrubs against a green lawn.
  • Use in creating hedges.
  • Planting together with conifers and evergreens.
  • Planting low-growing varieties in tubs.

Planting along the house:

Today there is great amount plants that can make your site bright and unique. Deutia is a shrub that will become a central element in your garden and will fill the area with the atmosphere of the East.

This is a low, about 1.5 m, deciduous shrub from the Hydrangeaceae family. Feature action characteristic of many hydrangeas - peeling of the bark. If you look closely, under the white lace of flowers you can see gray-brown shoots with thin plates of bark hanging in “rags.” This normal property mature shoots, and not traces of disease or pest.

In the garden, deutzia looks good, for example, in a prominent place with evergreen and terry. They all bloom at the same time, and the deutzia creates a neutral white transition between the lilac and yellow flowers. In landscape design, they often use a combination of deutzia with decorative conifers, and from tall varieties they form. Deytsia is not afraid of exhaust gases, so it can be planted as a hedge in areas adjacent to the road.

Deytsia: planting and care

Planting action

The plant is very light-loving; for planting you need to choose the sunniest place, protected from cold winds. The soil should be loose, fertile, well-drained, with a neutral reaction. If, when planting deutzia, add 300 g of slaked lime or a glass of ash into the hole. The best soil for deytsia is earth and sand in a ratio of 2:1:1.

Places with waterlogged soil and high level groundwater.

Deutia is planted in the spring; it is best to buy seedlings immediately before planting. The depth of the planting hole is about 50 cm; for drainage, sand or broken brick can be poured into the bottom of the hole in a layer of 10-15 cm. It is recommended to add 100-120 g of nitrophoska to the soil mixture to fill the hole. Under no circumstances should the root collar of a seedling be buried; it should be at ground level. The distance between the bushes is at least 1.5 m. After planting, the plant is watered abundantly, the soil is compacted and mulched with a layer 5-7 cm thick.

Caring for action

Watering. Adult plants are drought-resistant and do not tolerate waterlogging well, so 1 bucket of water per bush once a week or less is enough for them. After watering, the soil is loosened to a depth of 20 cm. In hot, dry weather and during flowering, watering is increased, and in the first ten days of August it is stopped to give the plant the opportunity to prepare for winter. Young plants during the period of active growth require more abundant watering.

Feeding. Fertilize the deutzia with compost with a glass of ash or fermented liquid (1 liter per 10 liters of water). Twice a season, complex mineral fertilizers are applied (120-150 g for each bush). It is advisable to fertilize during the flowering period and in the first half of summer; fertilizing in the fall has a bad effect on winter hardiness.

Trimming. Deutzia is pruned in spring and early summer. At the end of April, all branches growing inside the crown, broken or damaged, as well as shoot tips that did not ripen last year and frozen tips are removed. After flowering, each faded branch is pruned to a strong young shoot. It is also shortened by a third or a quarter, and it begins to bush and lay future flower buds.

If the plant is more than five years old, once every 3 years you need to remove 1-2 of the oldest shoots to ground level and thus rejuvenate the bush.

Preparing the action for winter. Deytsia winters not as problem-free as. In a harsh winter, the shrub can freeze to the snow level and then grow back, but there will be practically no flowering this year, because the deutzia blooms on the shoots of the previous year.

Young plants can be bent to the ground for the winter, fixing the branches with two sticks crosswise or in small arcs, throw foliage on top and build a “hut” from sticks. Cover the entire structure with lutrasil and polyethylene. This shelter design will not allow the snow that settles in the spring to bend and break the branches of the deutzia.

It will not be possible to bend an adult bush - its thick branches will break immediately, they are very fragile. Adult plants are prepared for winter even before the leaves completely fall off, so that they can serve as additional protection in the cold. The branches of the deutia are carefully tied together with a rope and a bag or any bag with a density of 60 is put on the bush. It is fixed on top with clothespins. Such a shelter protects not so much from frost as from drying out the shoots: without a bag, flower buds will most likely dry out.

Propagation of action

The plant reproduces well in early summer from green and woody cuttings, but bushes obtained by layering grow fastest. It is also possible to sow seeds. Preliminary preparation no seeds are needed, they are simply sown in the spring, pressed tightly to the ground without embedding into the soil. It usually takes about 3 weeks before germination appears.

Annual seedlings are easily damaged by frost, so they are covered for the winter. Flowering of seedlings begins in the third year.

Pests and diseases

The plant is very resistant to pests and diseases. Sometimes its leaves are damaged by the bumblebee-like proboscis, which can be eliminated by treating the bushes with phthalophos or karbofos (15% solution).

Types and varieties of action

The following species are grown in central Russia:

Deutzia small-flowered, or Amur (Deutzia parviflora, Deutzia amurensis). Spreading shrub up to 2 m high (in the Moscow region - up to 1.5 m). It blooms with small (up to 1.2 cm) white, odorless, five-petaled flowers. Flowering time is June, lasts up to 20 days.

Deytsia is magnificent, or lush (Deutzia magnifica). A shrub up to 1.5 m high with a wide crown that grows quickly. It blooms with large, up to 3 cm, bright white flowers, collected in umbrellas. Flowering time in the Moscow region is late June - early July. Decorative forms of Deutia splendid with double flowers are grown in culture ( Formoza), with bell-shaped flowers ( Superba), with particularly dense inflorescences ( Erecta).

Deutzia Lemoine, or hybrid (Deutzia x lemoinei). Taller, up to 1.6 m, with a wide rounded crown. White flowers up to 2 cm in diameter are collected in pyramidal inflorescences-panicles, standing upright. Blooms early, in May; in the Moscow region flowering may be later. Decorative varieties of Deutia Lemoine have been developed, which are popular among gardeners:

Boule de Neige- with white flowers in panicle inflorescences.

Mount Rose- the flowers are large, up to 3 cm, bright pink, unusually wide open.

Pink Pom Pom- double flowers, rich pink color, hemispherical inflorescences.

Strawberry Fields- with flowers of unusual color: crimson on the outside and pale pink on the inside.

Deytsia rough, or star (Deutzia scabra) has rough, hairy leaves. The crown becomes spreading with age; in the middle zone the bush grows up to 1.5 m. It blooms with small white or pink flowers (up to 1.5 cm) with characteristic oblong-pointed petals. The inflorescence is an elongated, narrow panicle.

In gardens there are forms of Deutzia rough:

Plena- with double flowers of pale pink color;

Roseo-plena- very frost-resistant, with pink double flowers.

It is thermophilic, grows and blooms well in sunny places, sheltered from the wind.

Requires loose, well-drained, fertile soil. Does not like acidic soils.

Drought-resistant, watering is very moderate except for young plants and the flowering period.

Pruning is required.

Shelter is required for the winter.

Planting deutia in open ground and caring for this shrub is not particularly difficult. In addition, the plant is little damaged by pests, for which it is valued by gardeners.

Deutzia (Deutzea) from the Hydrangeaceae family natural conditions grows in mountainous regions of temperate and subtropical zones of the Northern Hemisphere. Using the inherent ease of hybridization and the formation of new forms, Victor Lemoine, a French breeder, created many hybrid forms at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Actions were brought to Europe from Japan and China in the 19th century by Dutch merchants and Catholic missionaries. The lifespan of the plant is up to 25 years.

Options for using action in garden design

In garden design, action has not only a decorative meaning, but also a practical one - it can hide the site from prying eyes, protect it from the wind, and hide ugly buildings. The shrub grows quickly and does not require particularly careful care.

  • Deutzia is a silhouette shrub. It can be used as a single plant or in a group with other shrubs. Low-growing forms of deutia are used as a potted crop, for planting in containers, along fences and paths.
  • The traditional use of shrubs is in borders, especially multi-tiered and mixed ones.
  • Deutzia hedges, which do not require shaping, divide the garden into zones. Before planting a hedge, you need to calculate the distance between the bushes - add up the estimated height of two adjacent plants, divide the result by three. The distances between the bushes can be temporarily filled with annuals or biennials, ground cover plants, and currants. Filler plants are removed as the action grows.
  • Deutzia is used as a drapery plant to hide unsightly objects on the site.

Deutzia shrub: botanical description of the plant

Perennial shrub with a height of 0.5 to 4-5 m. Flowering begins at an average daily temperature of 15-19º C, Inflorescences are few or many flowering, corymbose, up to 4-7 cm in diameter. Oblong racemose up to 7 cm in diameter. Broad pyramidal up to 8 cm in diameter. Flowers are 1-2 cm in diameter, white, pink, lilac.

Deutzia develops better and blooms earlier if the spring was warm and humid. The total flowering period of numerous varieties of Deutia is 90 days, which allows you to create a garden of continuous flowering on your site. They grow on humus-rich fertile soils. Requires full sun and partial shade.

Main types of action

Deutzia is capable of developing such a mass of flowers that it will completely hide the foliage underneath.

Deutzia pink

An elegant, medium-growing shrub with a foam of pale pink flowers. The hybrid was created using two types - Deutzia purpurea and Deutzia graceful. Medium-sized bush up to 1 m high.

Tall bush up to 2 m in height. Double flowers up to 3 cm in diameter are collected in large inflorescences up to 12 cm long. Flowering time is June-July.

Deytsia graceful

A bush up to 1 m high spreads up to 1.5 m wide. Early time flowering - May-June. The leaves are oval, olive in color. The flowers are snow-white, star-shaped, collected in racemes. In favorable conditions it produces annual growth of up to 25 cm in height and up to 30 cm in width.

Deytsia terry

The terry variety D. rough plena (D. scabra plena) is widespread. It blooms with white flowers on the inside and pink-purple on the outside.

Deytsia hybrid

Garden hybrids not only combine best qualities parent forms, but also superior in abundance and duration of flowering. Variety D. Contraste has purple-lilac flowers.

Popular varieties of deutzia

Deutzia blooms earlier than all the shrubs on the site.

A spreading shrub up to 2 m high, growing up to 1.5 m wide. It blooms in spring with bright pink or lilac flowers with slightly curled petals, forming apical racemes. The leaves are oval, large, dark green in summer, golden in autumn.

Hybrid. The paniculate inflorescences contain large flowers up to 3 cm in diameter, painted in lilac-pink tones. The bush stretches up to 1.5 m.

Giving growth of 30-40 cm per year, it grows up to 2 m. Solid, raised branches form a spreading crown, like an umbrella. Blooms in summer, in June, with white, pink-tinged, double flowers.

The most stable species for the Moscow region. A medium-sized bush up to 1.5 m high. It blooms in May with deep pink flowers with white cores.

Winter hardiness of shrubs and rules for preparing for wintering

Deytsia is a relatively winter-hardy crop. Northern winds, lack of snow cover, fluctuations low temperatures can lead to damage to the root system, dehydration and drying out of the aboveground part of the bush. Plants native to the northern parts of their range and the high mountainous regions of Northern China tolerate winter well.

To protect against freezing, dry leaves are raked under the bush in a layer of 20 cm. In the autumn, before all the leaves have fallen, the deutzia is tied with covering material, pinning the lower edge to the ground to avoid drafts. The roots are covered with earth, and then with fallen snow, and covered with straw. Flexible branches of young plants no more than 1 m high are bent to the ground and covered with earth or snow.

Covering with spruce branches for the winter begins in November, when the average air temperature becomes stably negative. Previously, in October, the crowns are tied in a spiral, bent to the ground, tied to pegs. The best covering material is spruce spruce branches. It holds snow well, provides good air exchange, prevents damping off and rotting, and protects the plant from small rodents.

Deytsia: basic rules for planting and care in open ground

Deytsia is not demanding on the soil - it grows wherever water does not stagnate. Seed germination lasts from 1 to 3 years. The plant propagates by sowing seeds, dividing the bush, layering and cuttings.

How to propagate by cuttings

  • In June or September, cuttings 7-15 cm long and 5 mm in diameter are taken from semi-lignified annual shoots. In this case, the cuttings must have at least three buds;
  • the lower cut is made 2-3 mm from the kidney at an angle of 90º;
  • truncated leaves are left in the upper part, with lower half leaf blades are removed;
  • cuttings are treated with a root stimulant;
  • cuttings are placed in sand at an angle of 30º;
  • spray with a spray bottle several times a day;
  • duration of root formation - about 23 days;
  • Rooted cuttings are planted in a container.

How to propagate by layering

  • select a flexible young shoot, make a 4 cm oblique cut and insert a match into it;
  • place the shoot in a hole 15 cm deep and fill it with peat soil mixture;
  • pin the cuttings to the ground with a twig, tying the end to a peg;
  • leave connected to the parent plant for about 6-12 months until rooting;
  • After rooting, cut it off from the parent plant and replant it in a new place at the same depth.

Planting actions in the ground

  • Prepare a hole 50 ⅹ 50 cm deep;
  • pour drainage - sand in a layer of 10 cm at the bottom;
  • distribute the roots evenly in the hole and cover them with a planting mixture consisting of humus, compost or peat and sand in equal parts;
  • to neutralize acidic soil, add 200 g of slaked lime or wood ash to the pit.

Cuttings can be planted in open ground in October. In this case, the formation of callus and the first roots in cuttings occurs in May of the following year. The younger the mother plant, the better the cuttings take root.

After early spring pruning, mineral fertilizers are applied. Feeding with diluted manure (1 kg per 10 l) will improve flowering. I mulch with peat in a 5 cm layer.

Pruning is carried out after flowering or during the dormant period. All branches are cut into two eyes. It is necessary to cut out old unproductive branches and weak liquid shoots. If you are late with pruning, the plant may get sick or miss flowering this year. Pruning under the stump is done for the purpose of rejuvenation. It is done in the spring before the sap begins to flow, or late in the fall.

If there is an old deutzia growing on the site, you should remember that it may not withstand radical pruning. In this case, pruning is carried out in several stages:

  • in the first year, a third of the oldest branches are evenly cut off, leaving stumps of 15 cm and observing whether the young shoots will grow back the next year;
  • a year later, in early spring, before sap flow, another third of the bush is removed, making inclined cuts just above the buds;
  • in the third year, the remaining branches are cut out.

Features of growing plants in the Moscow region

In the temperate continental climate of the Moscow region, deutzia develops well and blooms profusely. The shrub is fed in spring or in the first half of summer. Feeding in more late time undesirable, as it can lead to late growing season, which will stop the hardening of the plant necessary for wintering.

The plant requires watering during drought - 15 liters for each bush 2-3 times a month, but does not tolerate waterlogging. Early frosts can damage the ends of non-woody shoots with flower buds, which can delay flowering by one year. It is necessary to thin out thickened bushes and carry out pruning correctly. Hilling up and sheltering will help you survive the winter.

Action is different rapid growth. Under favorable conditions, it blooms in the third year after sowing.

Action: care and reproduction (video)

Due to the ability to grow quickly and recover after frost, deutia are widely used in decorative floriculture. In modern green construction, such an ornamental flowering shrub as deutia is a significant component, the use of which increases the effect of a garden or park composition. In addition, deutzia grows well in city conditions - it is resistant to dust, smoke and gases.

Deutzia hybrid Mont Rose (pink)

Deytsiya hybridna Mont Rose (Rozheva)

Deutzia hybrida Mont Rose (pink)

Habit: spreading shrub.

Form: a very decorative, beautifully flowering deciduous shrub of the hydrangea family, with a spreading, vertically growing crown reaching about 1.5-2 m in height and 1-1.5 m in width. In youth the crown is somewhat disintegrating, with age it becomes more compact, with slightly drooping side branches. It blooms early, abundantly and for a long time with beautiful large bright pink flowers collected in apical racemes. Deutzia hybrid Mont Rose is good because it does not cause allergies and is one of the most stable representatives of its kind.

Growth rate: annual growth is 20-30 cm.

Leaves: oppositely located, broadly elliptical, 6-10 cm long, sharp-toothed edges, dark green. In autumn, the foliage turns golden yellow.

Bloom: abundant, effective, long-lasting. The flowers are large, soft pink-lilac, collected in large inflorescences, the edges of the petals are slightly curled.

Flowering time: Deutia Mont Rose blooms in May - June.

Root system: superficial, with a large number of fine roots, deep skeletal roots.

Relation to light/insolation: Deutzia rosea Mont Rose is light-loving, but tolerates light shade. In the shade, the quality of flowering deteriorates.

Type of soil/soil: Deutzia Mont Rose prefers well-moistened, loose, fertile soils with a slightly acidic or neutral reaction. Deutzia Mont Rose does not like dry soil or stagnant water. If the soil is acidic, it should be deoxidized with lime or wood ash. Responsive to feeding.

Planting/care: quite wind-resistant, but grows better in closed places. Care consists of periodic watering, fertilizing and loosening the soil. To maintain the symmetry and neat appearance of the bush, it is necessary to monitor the uniform distribution of shoots in the crown and remove incorrectly located and weak branches. After flowering ends, faded shoots also need to be removed, at which time new ones appear at the base of the crown. Strong growths are pruned to a height of at least 15-20 cm. If Deytsia bushes poorly, it needs to be pruned more strongly and more often, this helps thicken the crown of the plant.

All plants purchased from the PROXIMA nursery are provided with long-acting fertilizers with the latest formulas from the best European manufacturers and can be sold in your garden center without additional feeding for a whole year. But the greatest advantage of buying potted plants is that they can be planted, without purchasing additional fertilizer, from March to December - even on the hottest days of summer.

Pests and diseases: Deutzia Mont Rose is resistant to diseases and many pests. The leaves of the plant can be eaten by the bumblebee proboscis, but this insect is quite rare. In hot, dry weather, spider mites are possible. The main thing is to identify the pest (diagnosis) in order to choose the right plant protection product. Untreated plants may be affected by Anthracnose (leaf spot), powdery mildew and aphids. To protect the plant from diseases and fungal infections, it is necessary to treat the plants with fungicides (Skor, Switch, Maxim, Ordan, Horus, Quadris, Radomil Gold, etc.). Of course, it is better to have a specialist make the “diagnosis”. But as a rule, a modern gardener with the help of the Internet can independently identify the enemy and choose the right methods and means of plant protection. It is better to carry out preventive treatments once a month than to treat when the pest multiplies and “eats” the plant. An example is the war of gardeners and Ukrainians with Colorado beetles, which, like their human “cotton” namesakes, “Colorado beetles,” are very dangerous and gluttonous. Aktara 1g per 1l watering at the root 30-100 grams per plant depending on the size.

Application: Deutia can be used in any tree and shrub compositions, single and group plantings. They look picturesque in untrimmed hedges. The shrub is decorative due to its early, abundant and long-lasting pale pink flowering.

Climatic zone/frost resistance zone: 5 frost-resistant for the entire territory of Ukraine with basic care (mulching, fertilizing, watering) and winter shelter for young plants up to 3 years old.

Plant action (lat. Deutzia) belongs to the genus of deciduous and evergreen woody perennials of the Hydrangeaceae family, numbering about 50 species growing in wildlife Mexico, Himalayas and East Asia. The deutzia flower appeared in our gardens not so long ago, but was appreciated for its long and elegant flowering. At the beginning of the 19th century, Dutch merchants brought Himalayan and Japanese species action, Chinese plant species appeared in Europe only towards the end of the 19th century.

Today, the plant, named by Carl Thunberg in honor of one of the mayors of Amsterdam, Johann van Deitz, who sponsored a sea expedition to the East, is becoming increasingly popular, especially since there are many varieties and decorative forms to choose from, differing not only in color, size and shape of flowers, but also the height of the bush.

Deutzia shrub - description

The deutia bush can be spreading or erect, with a height of 40 cm to 4 m. The leaves of the deutia are opposite. Until the flowers open, the deutia can be mistaken for a honeysuckle bush. Deutzia blooms on last year's shoots: the bush is abundantly covered with white or pink, odorless flowers, collected in racemose apical inflorescences. The deutia bush lives for about 25 years. The fruit of Deutia is a capsule.

Planting action

When to plant deutia

The best time to plant deutia is spring, when the soil has already thawed, but the buds on the trees have not yet blossomed. A seedling with a closed root system can be planted until June. Before planting deutia, you need to choose an area with conditions that are comfortable for the plant. Deytsia loves open places that are not exposed to direct sunlight in the afternoon. Please note that deutzia does not like cold winds. The soil needs to be nutritious, not dry, well drained. The ideal soil is humus, peat compost, sand in a ratio of 2:1:2 - a soil mixture of this composition should be filled in the hole during planting if the soil on the site differs greatly from what is necessary for normal growth and development of the plant. If the soil on the site is too acidic, and deutzia prefers slightly alkaline soils, add 300 g of slaked lime to the planting hole.

Deutia seedlings

If you decide to grow deutia, listen to our advice. When choosing seedlings in the store, carefully examine the bush and determine whether there are any damage on the shoots that will cause the seedling to be sick for a long time, whether the buds are intact, and whether symptoms of any disease are noticeable. Saplings with bare roots are cheaper than planting material in containers, but this is not the only advantage: it is very important what condition the roots of the seedling are in, whether they are overdried, and if the seedling is in a container, this is difficult to determine. You need to buy seedlings immediately before planting; when transporting, it is advisable to wrap their roots in thick paper. Before planting, cut off broken branches, shorten the roots to 35-40 cm, and if they are dry, soak them for 2-3 hours in a bucket of clay mash with the addition of one liter of light pink solution of potassium permanganate.

How to plant deutia

Planting action is carried out according to certain rules. Deutzia should grow no closer than 250 cm from any other object, be it a building or another plant, since an adult bush takes up a lot of space. Dig a hole 40-50 cm deep, place a drainage layer there in the form of broken bricks or sand, lower the roots of the seedling into the hole, then fill it with the soil mixture described in the previous section, to which you should also add 100-125 g of nitrophoska. The root collar of the seedling should be at the level of the soil surface or 1-2 cm underground. After planting, the soil is compacted and watered, and the branches of the seedling are shortened to 3-5 buds on each shoot to stimulate tillering. The area is mulched with a layer of peat 5 cm thick.

Caring for action

How to care for action

Caring for the action is not difficult, and if you have mulched the tree trunk circle, then you will have even less work. Deytsia does not like abundant and frequent watering, so one bucket of water once a week will be enough for it; during the hottest season, the amount of water for irrigation is increased to two buckets, and from mid-August, watering of deytsia is stopped altogether. After watering, the soil around the bush is loosened to a depth of 20-25 cm; if weeds appear, they are removed. It is necessary to feed the plant monthly, adding 3-4 liters of liquid manure to each bush. Twice a season the action is fed with complex mineral fertilizers - 120-150 g for each bush. Fertilizing is applied only during the flowering period.

Transplantation of action

To the question of when to transplant deutia, the answer is clear: only in the spring, since transplanting deutia in the fall does not leave the plant time to take root in a new place before the onset of cold weather. The bush should be carefully dug up without destroying the earthen ball on the roots: the plant is dug around the perimeter of the crown projection, removed from the ground along with the root ball and moved to a new hole, into which drainage is first placed and 20-30 g of complex mineral fertilizer are added. Fill the hole with a soil mixture of the same composition as during the initial planting, then carefully compact the soil and water the transplanted bush abundantly. After replanting, it is advisable to cut down all the old branches, shorten the remaining shoots by a third, and mulch the tree trunk with peat. Adult deutia bushes may be sick for a long time after transplantation, but young plants take root quite quickly.

Action trimming

Growing deutia includes a procedure such as pruning. There are shrubs that can be pruned after a year or even two. Deytsia requires pruning twice a year - in spring and autumn. In the fall, branches that bloomed this year are shortened to the base or to the first strong bud, old branches are cut out, as well as those that thicken the bush. In addition to taking sanitary measures after flowering, the crown of the bush is formed. In the spring, they do sanitary pruning, shortening frozen branches and cutting off branches broken during the winter. If you got hurt most of shoots, and the root system of the bush is well developed, the plant is pruned “to the stump”. In the same way, rejuvenating pruning of action is carried out.

Pests and diseases

The plant is largely resistant to diseases and pests, but occasionally deutia suffers from a bumblebee-like proboscis that eats its leaves. You can get rid of the pest by treating the bush with a fifteen percent solution of phthalophos or karbofos.

Action after flowering

Blooming deutia is a beautiful sight, pleasing to the eye for quite a long time, but eventually the flowering stops and autumn comes, which will very soon be followed by winter. Deytsia has very low cold resistance. Since deutia blooms on last year’s shoots, it is most important to protect them from frost in winter, otherwise the bush will lose its decorative effect for the entire next year. In areas characterized by snowy winters without severe frosts, just bend the bush to the ground.

Planting and caring for action in the Moscow region or other areas with cold winters includes all the points listed and described, and nevertheless differs somewhat from plant care in the southern regions, because frosty winters middle zone require mandatory shelter during wintering. And if your winters are frosty but snowless, you will need more serious measures to protect the shrubs from the cold than snow. One of these reliable methods is air-dry shelter, which is used when preparing hydrangeas for winter: the bush is laid on the ground, a frame is built over it, on which dry leaves are poured or spruce branches are thrown, the frame is covered with lutrasil on top, and plastic film is placed on top of it. so that moisture cannot get inside the frame. This method is suitable for covering young bushes whose branches are easy to bend to the ground. Adult bushes are tied with twine or twine, and wrapped on top with breathable material, for example, spunbond, burlap or lutrasil - this will keep the shelter warm and prevent the buds from drying out.

Types and varieties of action

Among the cultivated species and varieties of deutia, there are more or less popular ones. We will introduce you to most of them, and it’s up to you to decide which type or variety you prefer.

Amur action, or small-flowered (Deutzia amurensis)

widespread in the Far East, in North Korea and in China. In Russia it is protected in several nature reserves. It grows in oak and coniferous-deciduous forests, and is found even at an altitude of 1400 m above sea level. It is a deciduous shrub up to two meters high with a spreading bush shape. The brown bark of the branches turns gray with age. The leaves are opposite, elliptical, up to 6 cm long, wedge-shaped at the base and pointed towards the apex, finely serrated, pubescent on both sides, ash-green or bright green in spring and summer, yellow-brown or ocher in autumn. Multi-flowered corymbose inflorescences up to 7 cm in diameter consist of white flowers devoid of aroma. Flowering lasts three weeks, starting at the end of June. The inconspicuous fruits of the dirty yellow color They are almost spherical boxes. This type of action is moisture-loving, light-loving, resistant to smoke, gases and drought, grows quickly and begins to bloom early.

Deutzia gracilis

comes from the mountains of Japan, it is small in height - from 50 cm to one and a half meters, the shape of the bush is round, the branches are thin, arched, the flowering is abundant. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate, elongated and pointed towards the apex, with an unequally serrated edge, up to 6 cm long, light green. On the lower side of the plate the leaves are bare, and on the upper side they are covered with star-shaped hairs. White flowers, collected in erect multi-flowered racemes up to 9 cm long, open in mid-July and bloom for about 35 days.

Deutzia scabra

grows wild in China and Japan. This is a shrub up to 2.5 m high, very graceful, with reddish or brown bark that peels off over time, elongated dull green leaves from 3 to 8 cm long, pubescent with small star-shaped hairs, which is why the leaves become rough. This species blooms later than all others. Flowering of slightly pinkish or white racemes up to 12 cm long lasts two to three weeks. Deytia rough has various decorative forms:

  • terry - double flowers, pink on the outside, white on the inside;
  • pure white - with double white flowers;
  • Vaterera - with white flowers on the inside and carmine on the outside;
  • pink-double - the most frost-resistant form with double pink flowers;
  • white-spotted - with small white specks on the leaves.
