Pencil drawing of a dog, man's best friend. How to draw a dog with simple pencils

Today I will show you how to draw a dog. Despite the fact that the skeletons of a dog and a cat are very similar, especially in that in simple form, which I draw, it is necessary to remember that these animals move and look different.

In this tutorial we will look at the entire process of drawing a dog. We will draw an anatomically correct portrait of a German Shepherd. Let's start with sketches and continue with drawing the skeleton, muscles and fur. If you follow the process step by step, you can draw any dog in as soon as possible. For more tips, check out our animal drawing tutorials.

1. Make some sketches

Many people, especially those new to art, ignore sketching and think it's a waste of time. Often they draw one or two sketches and call it a day. The temptation to rush this stage is very strong. After all, details are much more interesting to draw, right?

The problem is that if we only focus on details, we can easily ignore the anatomy of the animal. And believe me, the beautifully detailed fur of an animal that only partially resembles a dog will not impress anyone.

If you have a dog, watch how it walks, runs, jumps, sits and lies down. You might think you know how dogs move. But only by watching carefully will you realize that this is not so. Photos of dogs from the Internet can serve as an excellent example when drawing sketches of various poses. Try not to get carried away with the details - that's not what sketches are about.

2. Decide on the skeleton

The basis of drawing a dog is to focus on the skeleton. Even though no one will see it at the end, it is important to understand the skeleton and be able to draw it in proportion. As you become more experienced, you can start drawing the skeleton free-form, or you may even be able to skip this step because by then the proportions of the skeleton will be forever in your memory.

A good exercise is to sketch out the skeleton on top of your sketches before you move on to drawing it in your chosen pose. This will introduce you to the idea of a skeleton underneath that cute fur that covers dogs.

3. Draw the skeleton

As you sketch in various poses, you will understand which one suits you best. Perhaps you decide to draw a dog sleeping or sitting. In this tutorial I'm going to depict a dog in motion because... this position shows the animal and its anatomy at its best.

In a free manner, draw the skeleton of the dog in the chosen pose. I'm drawing a skull chest and pelvic bones and use separate lines to represent the spine, tail and limbs.

A dog's skeleton is similar to a human's. The similarities between human knees, elbows, legs and arms can be clearly seen. Dogs' legs aren't that different from our arms and legs—the only real difference is the proportions of the bones.

If you look closely, you will notice that dogs walk on the pads and toes of their feet, like a woman in high heels. Notice how the opposite front and hind legs take over most dog's weight. They stand firmly on the ground, while the other two barely touch the floor.

If you are working in a traditional manner, use light lines for the skeleton so they can be easily erased. If in digital format, draw each step on a separate layer.

4. Draw the muscles

At this stage the main task is to indicate the structure of the body under the fur. The German Shepherd is not particularly furry, so the muscles will be visible through the fur. However, if you decide to draw a breed such as an Afghan Hound or Bernese Mountain Dog, you will be faced with a more difficult task - finding the muscles under all the fur.

It is very important to know how the muscles are located under the skin. Understanding these general rules will give you everything you need to draw any dog, regardless of hair length.

5. Focus on the dog's face

Now is the time to finalize the drawing. Let's start with the head. Now we need to start using stronger lines.

It is very important to depict correct position eye. If you are drawing a dog's head that is held up straight, it is quite easy to get the correct proportions between the eyes and nose. However, drawing a slightly rotated face can be more difficult. In this position, the eyes are at a different angle, which changes their shape and size, as well as their position in relation to the nose.

It must be remembered that the eye located closer to the viewer will not be the same size as the one further away. From this angle, the near eye will be slightly larger.

6. Draw the face

Like most dogs, the German Shepherd has a long muzzle. Even in pugs that do not have protruding muzzles, it is not completely flat. The length of a dog's muzzle will vary depending on its breed, so watch this carefully.

By making the muzzle too elongated or, conversely, too short, you can destroy the resemblance of the drawing to a real dog. Remember - with a half-turn position, the muzzle will appear shorter.

In addition, pay close attention to the shape and size of your nose. Most dog noses look the same, but depending on the breed, they may be larger or smaller in relation to the head. When a dog's mouth is open, it usually shows teeth, gums and a tongue, which is often long and mobile.

7. Start with the ears

As with eyes, you need to pay close attention to perspective when drawing ears. Observe the shape of the head and how the ears are attached to it. The ears tend to be mirror images of each other, but even when drawing different ears (for example, some dogs have one droopy ear) they will remain consistent at their base. In this example, I specifically changed one ear to show you what I mean.

8. Treat the torso

We now have an idea of the musculature of the torso, but on top of the muscles there is skin and fur. In some cases, this radically changes the dog's overall appearance (think about how different some dogs look after a haircut).

The German Shepherd, to some extent, has long hair. Therefore, use short strokes to indicate fur. The dog I'm drawing has thick hair around its neck, under its belly and on its tail, but the rest of its body, especially its head and legs, has shorter hair. Try not to draw the same lines throughout the entire drawing, unless it is a short-haired breed.

When you're done, erase the lines of the skeleton and muscle sketches if you're drawing traditionally. And if in digital format, then turn off these layers.

9. Think about coat color

Every dog is a little different, and their coat colors can vary greatly. Even in a black and white sketch this can be shown. Use different pencil strokes when shading so the fur doesn't look flat.

My dog's fur is mostly brown and black. I didn't want to recreate all the undertones and shades, so I only sketched black tones on the wool. I also used light strokes on the dog's back to show the light falling on him.

10. Add the finishing touches

At the very end, with small thin strokes along the dog's legs, I drew a semblance of muscles showing under the fur. The idea of the drawing is to convey the image of the dog without having to shade the entire silhouette. The final touch is to add shadows under the paws and, voila, you have drawn a dog!

Probably, since the appearance of “Carlson” Lindgren, all parents know exactly what is needed for the happiness of the whole family. Dog for children! It is for this reason that a year ago we got a sandy-golden lump, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, who was named Gray. This miracle quickly became a member of the family and everyone's favorite. And that’s why, when we decided to find out how to draw a dog with a pencil, the choice fell on a representative of this breed.

The history of the appearance of Gray's "portrait"

For a week we “ran” after our dog, remembering “Prostokvashino” with a more than prophetic statement about our case: “I ran after her for half a day to take a picture!” But we never received it beautiful photo. Our tomboy managed to successfully avoid being imprinted. Either his tail or his nose always turned out to be closer to the lens. Having suffered, we went to others, more in a simple way. It turned out to be found on the Internet suitable photo, similar to our dog Gray, is easy. It is from this that we can draw a dog step by step.

But while we were looking for Gray, my child and I saw that the choice of potential models was huge. We could draw a husky with a pencil step by step, or German Shepherd, or even like. All these are beautiful, graceful and smart dogs. Each of the representatives of its breed has characteristics, inherent only to them, and there are personal qualities and traits common to all dogs, which is why we love them so much and value their friendship. For example, loyalty and the ability to rejoice at the owner, obedience and frankness (they cannot hide their emotions at all).

Already at the initial stages of working on a drawing of a dog, when we just looked at the varieties of these pets, we learned that they differ in temperament, for example, there are choleric, sanguine, melancholic and phlegmatic people, we got carried away. We wanted to learn how to draw not just an animal with four legs, ears and a tail, but also to master the patterns of drawing kind and grinning dogs, we wanted to try to draw a spaniel, dachshund or shepherd in pencil step by step. But that will come later. In the meantime, our “test of the pen”. Today we will show a dog in pencil step by step, and this will be our one-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback. We took him as a model.

Work plan

Drawing a dog with a pencil step by step turned out to be not at all difficult if you follow the planned plan exactly. What it includes:
  • Preparation;
  • Image of the paws and body of the animal;
  • Working on our pet's face;
  • Design of the picture.
The step-by-step work plan is clear and simple; it helps even people and children who are inexperienced in art to quickly master the technique of depicting dogs.

Step-by-step image of a dog

Stage 1. Preparation

It includes, first of all, the organization of the workplace.

Let's learn to draw, starting with auxiliary lines. We make two ovals that just touch each other. Required: the upper oval is almost 2 times smaller in size than the lower one. And it looks more like an uneven circle.

Even for beginners, this stage will not be difficult, and even a child can cope with it. But in the future it would be good if parents helped their child in step-by-step drawing.

Stage 2. Image of the paws and body of the animal

How to draw a dog's paws? To do this, draw lines down from the lower oval, at the end of which there will be soft pads. The front legs are completely visible, we make them in their entire length, taking into account the proportions. The back one is visible only, and since it is bent, it top part depicted as an egg-shaped figure along the bottom right side oval And already a small part of the dog’s paw comes from it.

Draw the dog's neck with two curved lines. On the left side we make the body a little larger.

We make a small circle at the bottom of the upper oval, which will also extend onto the lower one.

Stage 3. Working on our pet’s face

How to correctly complete all the details of the head? To do this, divide the upper oval with two arcuate lines, horizontal and vertical, into 4 parts.

The one that runs horizontally will have eyes.

The drawn small circle is also divided in half by a vertical line. The doggie's nose will be located in the middle of it.

On the sides of the muzzle we make the hanging ears characteristic of the Rhodesian Ridgeback.

We depict the eyes and perform the nose of the animal more accurately.

Stage 4. Design of the picture

We have mastered the basic principles that help us understand how to draw. There are still some nuances that will make our picture look like the original. Namely, we perform “toes” on the paws, do not forget about the tail.

We remove all unnecessary lines. We provide the necessary details.

We outline each part of the picture with the desired color. Do not forget that the Rhodesian Ridgeback, although a smooth-haired breed, still has tiny hairs.

Now, having selected the desired color, we color the picture. Our Gray appears in front of us.

This picture turned out quite simply. Having already become a little more comfortable, you can try more complex models, for example, figure out how to draw husky dog or some other breed. Good luck with this!

Hi all! Agree, it seems that the ideal picture from a parent’s point of view is when our little ones attend a lot of clubs, where mandatory drawing and music. But you know, it only seems, because the time spent with your baby does not pass without a trace. We get to know each other, learn to communicate, and do something together. At the same time, we teach the child something useful. Therefore, it is worth considering to allocate time for general activities. For example, today our creative workshop will open so that we can try, . I found the most simple diagram, and my little one and I repeated it. I’ll tell you about the work done. And at the same time I’ll show you how you can have fun with your baby.

Master Class. Dog in pencil

Let's draw simple pencil. This picture:

  • easy to correct if there are any mistakes,
  • and you can decorate it.

I will not only tell you, but also show each stage of the work along the way using photo.

THE BASIS

To make it easier for the baby to work, let's start by making a blank. We portray sitting dog, which means we make 2 ovals.

Please note:

  • The upper oval is smaller than the lower one.
  • They have a common ground.
  • The lower oval is at an angle, its central part is higher, and then it lowers.

This is the head and body.

AUXILIARY LINES

Now let’s pay attention to those lines that will help in your work:

  • We connect the head and body with curved lines. This is the neck.
  • On the left, we draw a line behind the lower oval and lower it down. So we move on to the “paws”.
  • Somewhere in the middle of the “body” there will be another paw.
  • And in order to make it clear that the dog is sitting, you need to draw a “droplet” on the oval below, wide part which will be on the right, and the narrow one on the left. From this “droplet” we make two short lines down.
  • All the dog’s limbs end in small circles.
  • We make a small circle around the junction of the head and body. This is how we defined the pet’s elongated nose.

Now that we have such help, let's draw the details.

MUZZLE

In the middle of the circle we outline a triangle of the nose, from which different sides the half-arcs diverge. This is the “mouth”.

“Divide” the muzzle in half. And at the same distance from the nose we denote the eyes.

We got a retriever. His ears are pointed and droop down. We draw triangles on the sides of the head.

BODY

  • In fact, we are all ready to put the finishing touches on the paws and toes. It is enough to divide the round “pillows” on the limbs into strips.
  • Erase all extra stripes. Let's look at the main ones.
  • Draw the eyes.

FINAL TOUCHES

  • The shadow shading on the nose should highlight the prominent nose and the area around the eyes.
  • We represent “wool” with a “herringbone” pattern.
  • Don't forget about the tail.

Simple Dog Drawing for Kids and Beginners

Necessary materials:

- eraser and sheet of paper;
- pencils.

Steps to drawing a cartoon dog:

1. To depict the lower part of the muzzle, where the mouth will be, draw an arc. On the right side, draw another tiny arched line to create a dimple on the dog's cheek. This figure is very similar to a smile.

3. From the left top point“smiles” we draw a straight line that goes up. But from the lower right part of the original figure we draw three vertical lines. These will be our pet's paws.

3. At the intersection of two figures we draw a big nose. We also begin to draw the upper part of the head and small eyes, which will be of different diameters. The drawing is in perspective, so the right eye will be closer to us, and the left eye will be further away. This is how we get the right large contour of the eye and the left small one. Draw a semicircle to the lower ends of the vertical lines.

4. Draw a vertical line to get the outline of the dog’s head, and also draw an arc from it. This way we get the back and part of the hind leg. At this stage, you should also pay attention to the dog’s ears, which will be droopy. Therefore, we draw ovals close to the contour of the head. Connecting two geometric figures with the outline of the head using lines.

5. Draw the dog’s legs in more detail, especially the back one.

6. Draw in detail the eyes and the dog’s face itself. We thicken the ears a little at the base and get a ready-made contour drawing of the dog, which can and should be colored with bright shades of pencils.

7. The pet itself will have a red coat color. So for the base color we use a yellow pencil, which we use to paint over the entire surface of the body and head.

8. Create volume with an orange pencil.

9. Finally, we work on the fur areas on all surfaces of the illustration with a burgundy pencil to achieve a red tint.

10. We completely paint over the dog’s large nose, as well as small pupils. To create a clear outline of the drawing, you should work on each line.

So we get a finished drawing of a dog that will give good mood for the whole of next year.

How to draw a dog easily and beautifully

Necessary materials:

- eraser;
- pencils and a sheet of paper.

Stages of drawing a dog:

1. Draw the head of a pet in the form of an oval. From the left side of the circle, we begin to draw a spiral to the right side to get the body and tail of the dog. Twist the tip.

2. Add two pairs of paws to the spiral using sketchy simple lines, and also add small ears in the upper part of the circle.

3. We slightly adjust the contour of the pet’s body and head, because we need to show the fur. To do this, erase the lines a little and draw hairs in their place.

4. We detail the legs: both front and back.

5. Then you can take enough time to draw the eyes, nose and mouth with a tongue. The dog's face should be kind and cheerful. Let's add a few lines of fur on the surface of the body and move on to coloring the picture.

6. We completely paint over the areas of the body and head. Let's leave only the mouth, nose and eyes white.

7. Let's add yellow wool with a brighter sunny shade. This is how volume begins to emerge in the dog’s drawing.

8. Now we will paint over the tongue with a red pencil and work a little on the shadow on the fur areas.

9. Use a black pencil to paint over the nose and pupils of the eyes. Next, we outline each line in the drawing in black.

10. A drawing of a cheerful dog with a New Year’s touch is ready to please everyone with the upcoming winter holidays, as well as a time of miracles, cheerful gatherings with friends, soulful evenings with family and receiving gifts.

How to draw a puppy with colored pencils

Necessary materials:

- a sheet of paper (it is best to take half-cardboard);
- pencils and eraser.

Steps to drawing a puppy in a cup:

1. The small size puppy will be placed in a beautiful cup. Therefore, the first thing you should do is draw it. We place the object just below the center so that we can then add the body and face of the dog to the drawing. Draw elongated ovals at the base of the cup and its upper part. We connect the sides and get a beautiful silhouette. Let's add a small handle on the right side. For the cup you should also draw a small saucer. We draw it using ovals. We connect the edges and then remove the auxiliary lines with an eraser.

2. Place the puppy in a large cup. To do this, draw the head in the form of a circle, and then draw the front part of the muzzle. From the sides of the pet's head, draw two arched lines to outline the body. Add two tiny circles to the top of the cup to create legs.

3. Draw in detail the dog’s face, where there will be beautiful three-dimensional eyes, a large nose and a small mouth. We will also add a contour line for a different coat color. Let's finish drawing the puppy's head when we add beautiful hanging ears on the sides.

4. Draw the dog’s body and legs in detail to get a natural drawing of your beloved pet.

5. Choose your favorite color for the cup. It is advisable to choose a bright shade. For example, red, which is often found in New Year's illustrations. Use a pencil to paint over the entire silhouette of the cup along with the handle and saucer. Create a uniform color on each of the elements.

6. Use a brown pencil to paint over the ears, paws, body and a small part of the muzzle.

7. Add a burgundy pencil with a brown note to the drawing to get a honey-colored coat in all areas of the illustration.

8. Paint over the remaining areas of the fur with a black charcoal pencil. We also create a nose and eyes for them. Create highlights in the eyes with a yellow pencil. Finally, we work out each line with a dark pencil.

So a New Year’s drawing of a dog gradually appeared on a white sheet of paper. Such an original illustration, where a cute puppy sits in a cup, will delight everyone in the coming year.

Beautiful dog in pencil step by step

Necessary materials:

- pencils (HB and colored);
- eraser;
- paper.

Stages of drawing a dog:

1. To draw the head and front part of the body, we use simple geometric shapes - ovals. We draw them with a simple pencil, overlaying the outline on top of each other.

3. Now we finish drawing the tail in the background of the picture and the hanging ears.

4. We deform the outline of the dog’s head and begin to draw in detail the body, where in the drawing we have the paws, tail and chest with the neck. Let's add some strokes to draw the fur.

5. Move on to the dog’s face, where we draw the nose and mouth. We outline the outline of the ears in detail.

6. Add the eyes and folds of fur around them. We clarify the general outline of the drawing and move on to coloring.

7. For the base coat color we use a yellow pencil with a sandy tint. We completely cover the drawing with it, only leaving the eyes and nose untouched.

8. To create a beautiful shade of fur, use a brown pencil. Apply neat strokes to the shadow parts.

9. Finally, take a dark brown and black pencil. We paint over the shadow areas, and only then we can create the outline of all the details of the drawing. We also paint over the nose and eyes with a black pencil.

10. So we get a finished drawing of a dog on New Year 2018 as a symbol.

But look,

In this lesson I will tell you... More precisely . Many, if not all, consider them the cutest creatures in the world (after, of course, cats always rule). No matter what they say, it’s better to draw something great once than to watch it a hundred times. Actually, this is what we will do now. But the dog won’t turn out cute if you don’t follow some rules of real artists:

  • First, give the drawing a piece of your love;
  • Second, sharpen your pencil;
  • Draw all over the paper;
  • Did not work out? Throw it away and start again!
  • Turn on your imagination!
  • Look at the result and rejoice, your smile is wider! =)

Drawing a dog step by step is easy and simple. Even if my dear readers skipped all classes visual arts at school (which is what I did at the time), with the help of our tips they can easily portray a dog, or.

Where do we start? Let's draw just two oval shapes, from which we will create the torso and head best friend person. Approximately at their junction we draw another circle from which a muzzle will grow. We also make blanks for the paws.
The next step to mastering the art of drawing cute animals will be the head. What is important to remember here:

  • The head is very important element in the picture;
  • It shouldn't be too big or small;
  • Maintain proportions between body parts;
  • Don’t make straight lines, they don’t exist in nature;
  • Draw the lines with light movements, do not press the lead into the paper;

Let's move on to drawing the details of the face: ears like a bear, mouth and nose. Well, and most importantly, the eyes. Important points when depicting eyes:

  • Animals' eyes are usually round;
  • The pupils can be dilated, constricted, of different shapes;
  • The highlight must be added relative to the light;
  • The mood of the whole picture will depend on the eyes: sad, cheerful, aggressive, kind, and so on.

Let's move on. Now the outline. It should be highlighted with a thicker line. On the paws we draw pads and claws like those of a cat. Let's add a tail. difficult for beginners. I strongly recommend that after the first attempt, do not put the work aside, but try again.
The next step is to erase all the extra lines. And now our sketch has already become more realistic. The main thing is not skill, but desire.
If you want, you can give his fur a slight tint, like in the first picture. Add shadows and colors. Use your imagination. It is not worth copying 1 to 1 from here. They say that every artist sees the world in his own way. I hope now you know how to draw a dog with a pencil step by step. I also recommend reading the lesson about drawing. Show off your work. This is how it happened for me:
Try drawing something else, like a dove. I will be glad to see the results of your work. Leave comments, visit us often, and you will learn a lot of new things. Thank you for your attention! Continuation of this lesson, let's try to draw other breeds.
