Is it possible to wear lenses with astigmatism - contraindications for wearing. Which contact lenses should I choose to correct astigmatism? Which lenses are best for astigmatism?

Astigmatism is specific changes in the functioning of the eyes, in which everything around is seen with rather blurred boundaries or with certain distortions.

People of all ages are susceptible to this disease.

Often, astigmatism is combined with pathologies such as myopia or hypermetropia. Not so long ago, they were considered the most important eye pathologies, but with the development of technology, more and more attention is now being paid to astigmatism.

In this regard, many patients ask the question: is it possible to wear lenses with astigmatism, how to choose and which ones are better?

Correcting vision with contact lenses began relatively recently, but quite a large number of people already prefer them over glasses.

Features of astigmatic CLs

If astigmatism is detected in a person, the doctor writes a prescription for the purchase of special astigmatic or toric contact lenses.

Today, stigmatic and astigmatic lenses are available for sale.

Home distinctive feature Toric CLs differ from ordinary ones in their shape. Thus, stigmatic lenses for the correction of myopia have the shape of a sphere. While lenses for astigmatism come in a shape that combines a sphere and a cylinder.

They have different optical forces, which spread vertically and horizontally. Along the outer meridian, one of the values corrects astigmatism, the second corrects existing myopia or hypermetropia.

Astigmatic SCLs are good at correcting disturbances in the perception of surrounding objects that arise due to different curvatures of the cornea or lens. With such curvature, the refraction of light rays in the vertical plane differs from their refraction in the horizontal plane. As a result, a person sees the world vague and small details illegible.

The second important difference between astigmatic CLs and spherical ones is their location on the cornea of the eye. In a spherical lens, the refractive power of light rays is equal over its entire area. This means that it does not matter how it lies on the cornea.

Toric CLs must occupy a certain location. Only in this case will the cylindrical component affect a specific area of the cornea. During manufacture, CLs are equipped with a special mechanism that fixes them in one position. This position does not change when blinking or moving the head.

The following methods of fixing CL are distinguished:

  • prismatic ballast - in this case, the lower part of the lens is thicker; as a result of gravitational forces, the lens remains in the correct position;
  • cutting off or truncation - with this method, a small part of it is cut off at the bottom of the lens for reliable fixation;
  • periballast - in this case, the top and bottom of the CL are made thinner;
  • Various changes in the curvature of the front or back surface of the lens.

The best fixation is achieved by combining several fixation methods. To correctly position the SCL, the ophthalmologist focuses on certain laser marks.

Types of CLs that correct astigmatism

Today, there are a large variety of toric lenses from a variety of manufacturers on the ophthalmic products market. Acuvue and Optics MCLs have gained the most popularity.

The following main types are distinguished:

  1. Soft - these lenses are made from thin polymer material. They are made in a special form that combines a sphere and a cylinder. As a rule, wearing this type of CL is regulated established regime, that is, they need to be removed at night.
  2. Hard – hard materials are used to produce this type of CL. Astigmatism can only be corrected with gas-permeable rigid lenses. To correct astigmatism, such contact lenses are worn for at least six months. They should not be left on the cornea overnight.

Important! When correcting CL astigmatism, you must carefully monitor your health. Since in diseases such as diabetes, glaucoma or increased blood pressure Certain complications may develop.

Manufacturers also produce colored lenses that, in addition to correcting astigmatism, will change eye color. As well as multifocal ones, designed to correct this pathology in combination with farsightedness caused by the patient’s age.

Advantages of CL compared to wearing glasses

Until recently, astigmatism was corrected only with rigid contact lenses. But progress does not stand still, and today people suffering from astigmatism can use special toric SCLs. Soft contact lenses with astigmatism, they can have an outer surface of a toric shape or an inner one. In the first case, astigmatism of the cornea and lens is corrected up to 4.5 diopters, in the second - astigmatism of the cornea is corrected up to 6 diopters.

Compared to glasses, lenses benefit in the following parameters:

  • correct corneal astigmatism to a high degree;
  • minimally limit the field of view and practically do not distort the images on the retina;
  • provide best conditions for lateral vision;
  • minimize spherical aberrations and prismatic effect;
  • allow you to achieve higher clarity of vision, because by tightly fitting to the cornea they create a single whole optical system.

In addition to all of the above, the big advantage of CL is their production from the latest materials. Today, contact lenses of this type are made from hydrogel or silicone hydrogel. Both of these materials are well tolerated by the cornea.

Wearing modes are also quite varied - for one day, for two weeks, for 1-3 months. This allows you to choose an option that will be ideal for a particular patient.

Among other things, in order to get used to wearing contact lenses, you need to spend less time than getting used to glasses.

Important! A prescription for purchasing lenses to correct astigmatism is issued only after full examination And . Such lenses are prescribed only for astigmatism greater than 0.75 D.

Disadvantages of astigmatic contact lenses

At large quantities positive qualities Toric lenses still have some disadvantages.

These disadvantages include the following:

  1. The development of eye inflammation is possible - due to the greater thickness of these CLs, the patient may experience some discomfort and may need more time to adapt to them. Also, when wearing lenses of this type, the patient's eyes may become especially sensitive.
  2. Myopia may increase - this is due to a chronic lack of oxygen in the cornea.
  3. The process of changing the topography of the cornea is possible - in this case, a specialist can diagnose keratoconus in the patient. This diagnosis may be a contraindication for vision correction with laser.
  4. Sometimes various optical distortions occur - this is due to different thicknesses on various areas lenses.

Important! With the help of CL it is possible to correct astigmatism, but they are unable to eliminate it. An experienced specialist should select lenses, taking into account the individual characteristics of the eye structure. Otherwise, their use may be harmful to health.

When deciding whether to use astigmatic contact lenses, the choice should be CL for one day or one month. They require a minimum of care and when used, the risk of inflammation is minimal.

Features of selection and cost of toric CLs

When selecting lenses for astigmatism, the doctor spends more time compared to choosing ordinary SCLs in the shape of a sphere.

Large amounts of time are associated with the need to:

  • correctly selected spherical and cylindrical components for adjustment;
  • clarification of existing astigmatism axes;
  • mandatory assessment of the location of the astigmatic lens.

If the contact lens is placed in the wrong place, the doctor will have to perform an additional recalculation of astigmatic lenses.

These factors determine the higher price for the services of a specialist in the selection of toric CLs compared to conventional ones.

Also, the cost of CLs of this type is affected by the complexity of their production.

However, when using astigmatic lenses, the patient sees the objects around him more clearly and better than when using cylindrical glasses or SCLs shaped like a sphere.

With the development of progress and various equipment All larger number people are faced with the problem of astigmatism. A natural question arises: is it possible to wear contact lenses with astigmatism?

Recently, it has become possible to correct astigmatism using soft contact lenses. Such CLs have a special toric form.

Due to the complexity of their manufacture, toric SCLs are more expensive. However, their cost is compensated by the clearer picture that the patient sees in astigmatic CLs.

Astigmatism is a disorder visual function. In this condition, a person sees objects as fuzzy and blurry.

Moreover, the distance to them does not matter. It can occur in both myopia and farsightedness. Finding contact lenses for eyes with astigmatism is a difficult task. To solve this problem, you need to contact a specialist.

Main characteristics

You can correct your vision if you have astigmatism:

  • glasses;
  • hard contact lenses;
  • soft contact lenses.

The last method appeared not so long ago. Because of the glasses, patients often experienced side effects such as eye fatigue and dizziness. Soft variants are also called toric. They come in 2 types:

  • the toric surface is located on the front plane (correct astigmatism values of 4.5 D);
  • the toric surface is located on the back plane of the lens (the diopter value increases to 6).

Features of the device of toric products

Features of astigmatic contact vision correction devices:

Video

This video will tell you about all the advantages and disadvantages of choosing astigmatic contact lenses.

Astigmatic contact lenses are a convenient means not only for achieving high visual acuity I. They also help get rid of headaches and other manifestations of the disease. Modern vision correction devices are made of specialized materials that allow the eyes to be in a comfortable biological state. The selection of lenses is carried out only by a specialist.

Artificial vision is also vision

Technological progress and development information technologies are rapidly changing our lives and even physical parameters:

  1. We become taller and broader in the shoulders,
  2. Overall life expectancy is increasing.

But:

Evolution has not kept pace with the increase in the number of computers and other sources of information that require prolonged visual strain.

If in the last century ophthalmologists considered myopia and farsightedness to be the main eye diseases, then with the development of medical science they pay equal attention to the treatment of astigmatism, which patients consider an additional incomprehensible “scourge”.

Lenses began to be worn instead of glasses relatively recently. But many accepted the lenses organically and practically abandoned glasses.

Now, when a new “misfortune” is discovered, patients naturally ask themselves the question: Can I wear contact lenses if I have astigmatism?

The answer from doctors of different specialties is clear: it is possible and necessary!

Violations caused by the diagnosis require correction. Contact lenses are the most common treatment for astigmatism.

Purpose, selection and benefits

In the polymer components of lenses and glasses, rays are refracted and focused on the retina.

Vision correction in the presence of astigmatism is more complex than in cases of myopia and farsightedness. Therefore, only an ophthalmologist has the necessary qualifications and selects lenses.

During the vision examination, the doctor determines the degree of astigmatism:

  • weak - up to 3 diopters;
  • average - from 3 to 6 diopters;
  • high - above 6 diopters.

What to consider when choosing an optics material?

Astigmatic soft lenses are used for any degree of pathology.

Important: The use of soft optics is especially recommended if the number of diopters in one eye differs from the diopters of the other eye by more than two units.

Even a large difference in visual acuity does not cause painful sensations, maintaining the possibility of equivalent binocular vision.

The choice of lenses depends on a person’s lifestyle:

  • sports,
  • the presence of extreme situations,
  • everyday eye strain,
  • the need to drive a car, etc.

Sport - to support health

Not everyone knows that lenses, like glasses, can be worn by children. Their use is especially necessary for children who have congenital defects in the structure of the cornea.

Important: In this disease, correction with early childhood is extremely important, otherwise the child will develop strabismus and other serious complications.

What are lenses for?

The use of lenses provides:

  1. Stability of vision.
  2. No blurriness, headaches or other sensations that occur as a result of the eyes being out of focus.
  3. The fixed position of the lens eliminates the risk of displacement or falling out extreme situations and when playing sports. Stabilization is achieved by technical solutions embedded in the form.
  4. Visual acuity and peripheral vision create ideal conditions for driving a car, as well as for other jobs that require good vision.
  5. Improving vision at dusk and at night by wearing special “night” lenses.
  6. Preserving the natural beauty of the eyes.

Important: The use of multi-colored lenses does not affect vision, but changes the color of the eyes.

Types of lenses

Contact lenses are divided into hard And soft.

Important: Used to treat astigmatism soft toric lenses.

They are called TKL, because they have two meridians with different refractive indices of rays.

The meridians are located at an angle of 90 degrees to each other.

TCLs must be in a certain position in relation to the retina. The stability of the lens location is achieved by their special shape.

Which company should you choose?

There is a huge variety of lenses. The doctor has the opportunity to select them individually, and the patient will choose from the recommended ones which is best for him personally.

Among the many options for treating astigmatism offered by different manufacturers, the accelerated stabilization design differs Acuvue lenses. They are made by a company known for health products, Johnson & Johnson.

The material is synthetic silicone hydrogel, which:

Types of lenses by method of use

  1. Daily: used for a year, then they need to be replaced. They are removed at night. Daily treatment with a cleaner and once a week cleaning of protein deposits are required. They have low cost.
  2. Long wearing: used around the clock for a month. Cleaning and disinfection are carried out once a week.
  3. Planned replacement: allowed to be worn for three months with mandatory daily treatment.
  4. Frequent scheduled replacement, whose price is the highest, do not require daily processing. Prescribed to patients prone to allergic reactions. Wearing periods are one, two, three, four weeks, depending on the model.

Contraindications for wearing

Medical prescriptions are a forced measure, which is determined by the detected pathology in the patient.

Astigmatism can be treated different ways: glasses, surgery, exercises. Therefore, sometimes people do not understand why doctors do not recommend wearing lenses for astigmatism.

Ophthalmologists explain their shortcomings:

  1. How foreign body, lenses can cause mechanical irritation with inflammation of the eyes.
  2. Oxygen starvation of a constantly closed cornea can cause increased myopia.
  3. If the thickness is different, optical distortion may occur in both eyes.
  4. Allergic reactions to polymers.

About vision correction with contact lenses:

What glasses to wear for astigmatism: correct selection optical lenses

Astigmatism is one of the visual defects caused by a disorder of the lens or cornea. The pathology requires certain adjustments, and contact lenses for astigmatism are the most common method of treatment.

In addition to the above indicators, lens stabilization is an important criterion. They must have a fixing device that does not allow the products to rotate on the surface of the eye. Otherwise, the axes will constantly shift. The stabilization effect is achieved in several ways:

  • thickening the lower part of the lens (prismatic ballast method);
  • truncation of the bottom edge of the product and others.

After the lenses are selected, a test test is carried out. A person should wear them for about half an hour. If everything is in order and there are no complaints, then a prescription is issued for the manufacture individual couple astigmatic lenses.

Advice! TCL is essentially a complete optical system that provides higher clarity of vision than astigmatic glasses.

It is worth remembering that wearing lenses is not a panacea, and they do not cure the disease itself. And contact lenses for astigmatism are simply a working option for correcting vision, allowing a person to lead a normal lifestyle.

Untreated pathology causes the development of strabismus, and the end result is a sharp drop in the quality of vision. That is why, when discomfort in eyes accompanied by impaired visual acuity, it is necessary to visit an ophthalmologist's office.

A defect in the cornea or lens of the eye requires mandatory correction - otherwise the loss of visual acuity will progress. Contact lenses for astigmatism are the most effective and safe correction option. They completely compensate for the defect, returning nominal visual acuity, while simultaneously correcting associated problems - myopia or hypermetropia. However, not all contact lenses can be used to correct astigmatism. For people with a similar defect, experts prescribe toric CLs, which are selected in accordance with the clinical picture.

What lenses does a doctor prescribe for astigmatism?

To correct astigmatism, toric contact lenses are used, which are made from various materials. For their production, hydrogel or silicone hydrogel materials are used, which ensures their high vapor and gas permeability.

Rigid contact lenses made of organic glass are used in cases where SCLs are not suitable for the patient for some reason. Most often they are used for the correction of complex defects, when the replicated options do not correspond to the recipe.

Important! The purchase of contact lenses depends on which lenses for astigmatism were prescribed by the doctor. It is prohibited to independently switch from hard to soft, and vice versa.

To correct astigmatism with a deviation from normal up to 1.5 D, conventional spherical contact lenses can be used, which will provide the necessary visual acuity. This method is acceptable only in situations where there is no progression of the disease and there is a good prognosis for independent restoration of visual acuity (for example, with diabetes mellitus Type II).

Soft toric contact lenses of spherocylindrical shape differ from conventional spherical ones by the presence of a cylinder, which levels out the astigmatic defect along the main meridian. Therefore, the TCL must be stabilized in the desired position - this is the only way to achieve the necessary corrective effect.

Methods for stabilizing optics

Manufacturers use different kinds stabilization:

  • prismatic ballast - the lens is stabilized under the influence of gravity, but the optics can rotate on the cornea to an arbitrary angle if the head is tilted to the side;
  • periballast - the thin top and bottom of the contact lens ensures that the optics go under the eyelids, which eliminates displacement and improves the fit to the cornea;
  • truncation - the CL rests on the lower eyelid due to the cut off lower part;
  • changing the curvature of the torus - front or rear torus reduces the risk of displacement due to the corresponding shape of the optics itself;
  • accelerated stabilization design - Johnson & Johnson's own development, ensures that the contact lens returns to the desired position with each blink due to the arrangement of stabilizing components in an X-shaped pattern;
  • Precision Balance 8/4 Design is a development of Air Optix, where the stabilizing parts are located in places corresponding to the location of “8” and “4” o’clock on the watch dial, stabilization also occurs when blinking.

The selection of lenses for astigmatism should take into account the method of stabilization, since this factor affects comfort Everyday life. If the contact lens is not properly “fixed,” a person will not be able to lead an active lifestyle, engage in dynamic sports, or dance. The doctor must take into account the patient’s lifestyle and activity when choosing and prescribing corrective optics.

Research Used

To correctly prescribe the correction, the doctor resorts to various methods defect diagnosis.

  • Visometry - performed with and without correction. The ophthalmologist determines the patient's visual acuity, achieving a value as close as possible to the nominal value.
  • Skiascopy or refractometry allows you to obtain accurate information about the degree of the defect and the meridian that should be corrected.
  • Keratotopography today is the most indicative, but not always justified way to diagnose astigmatism.

The results of biomicroscopy, used to determine the cause of the pathology, allow us to judge the possibility of using the contact method of correction. If the cause of astigmatism is inflammatory process or infection, contact lenses are not prescribed until the eye tissue heals.

Factors influencing the selection of optics

When astigmatism is detected, the ophthalmologist determines the defect and the degree of deterioration in visual acuity - without this it is impossible to prescribe a correction. All research results are reflected in the recipe.

  1. Optical correction power - that is, actual visual acuity. In the prescription for optics it is indicated in diopters, which can be either positive (for farsightedness) or negative (for myopia).
  2. The radius of curvature is the curvature of the cornea. Reported in millimeters as the Bc value.
  3. Corneal diameter is the actual size of the cornea. Indicated in millimeters for the Dia value.
  4. Astigmatic correction power, that is, the visual reflection of the defect. Calculated in diopters, it can be either positive (hypermetropia) or negative (myopia). In the optics prescription it appears as Cyl.
  5. The location of the defect, that is, the location along the main meridian. Indicated in degrees corresponding to the inclination of the cylinder, which is determined by the Ax value.
  6. The type of stabilization is a method that will ensure that the position of the CL is maintained. Reflected in the recipe as Design.

Important! In most cases, in the prescription for TCL, the doctor indicates not only the above values, but also the company, as well as “ the lineup» manufacturer. This greatly simplifies the further purchase of corrective optics.

Choosing the duration of wearing TCL

In addition to the main characteristics of the optics, the duration of wearing contact lenses is also determined. Depending on financial capabilities, physiological and anatomical features the patient, his habits and lifestyle, the duration of wearing is selected:

  • daily - for single use during the day;
  • planned replacement - wearing a TCL for 30-90 days (antiseptic treatment of the optics is required);
  • frequent scheduled replacement - use of a set of optics for 7-14 days with mandatory antiseptic treatment during periods of non-use.

Important! The cost of using contact lenses for astigmatism practically does not depend on the duration of wearing one set. This should be taken into account when choosing optics.

Is it possible to choose other optics yourself?

In some cases, a person may decide to switch from one model and manufacturer to another. This may be due to both the cost of the optics and the ease of use. Since correction of astigmatism with lenses should only occur under the supervision of an ophthalmologist, it is not recommended to switch to lenses from another manufacturer on your own. But this does not mean that you cannot try other lenses. If you have the appropriate prescription, you can select a TCL from another manufacturer whose optical parameters correspond to the prescription.

Case study: Vladimir S., age 34 years. Astigmatism was first detected at the age of 9 years. Transition to TKL at 27 years old. Wearing Clariti 1 day Toric with parameters -2.25 Cyl -1.25 ax 70 is prescribed. The patient independently decided to switch to less expensive lenses for financial reasons. After studying the range, I chose ACUVUE 1 Day Moist for Astigmatism. The transition was successful.

It should be borne in mind that such actions are not always justified. You should consult your doctor or ophthalmologist specialty store in case there is a desire to switch to other optics. Incorrectly selected lenses will cause a decrease in visual acuity, which will lead to other problems.
