Gentamicin veterinary instructions. The drug "Gentamicin". Gentamicin instructions for use injections for animals

Among modern antibiotics there are enough especially powerful and effective drugs, which in some cases can save an animal’s life. Unfortunately, not all of them are affordable, and you can’t buy them in pharmacies without a prescription. Well-known and quite effective means, one of which is Gentamicin.

The drug, despite being somewhat anachronistic, is in fairly high demand in veterinary medicine. It belongs to the group of aminoglycoside antibiotics, synthesized in the last century. Important distinctive feature this medicinal product is its specificity: it acts only on gram-negative microorganisms; it is practically useless to treat infections caused by gram-positive microflora.

That is why Gentamicin for dogs should never be used by eye. This medicine can be injected only in cases where the pathogen and the degree of its sensitivity to the drug are precisely known. This can only be determined by growing a culture from the pathological material taken (smears, etc.).

Can be used in the treatment of joint diseases(arthritis and arthrosis), as well as in cases acute respiratory diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract . Note that the drug has shown itself well both in the treatment of primary infections and in the elimination of secondary pathologies that appeared against the background of ailments of viral etiology.

Good results have been obtained in the treatment of many diseases gastrointestinal tract if the pathogen belongs to gram-negative microflora. 90% of the medicine is excreted by the kidneys, so it is also used in the treatment of diseases of the excretory tract, although theoretically this cannot be done with dogs (see below).

Toxic effects and precautions

On veterinary websites, if you wish, you can find a huge list of cases in which the drug we are describing proved to be far from successful. the best side. Often severe side effects are the result of its illiterate use. We would like to remind you of those aspects that should always be kept in mind when planning to treat an animal with gentamicin. The pronounced toxic effects of the drug do not appear out of nowhere:

  • Under no circumstances should Gentamicin be used on animals if the pet has any kidney problems. For cats, this antibiotic can be used to treat urinary tract, but in the case of dogs it is strongly not recommended to do this.
  • Never use this drug if the animal is already receiving other aminoglycosides or any other antibiotics. Especially in this regard, cephalosporins, which are widespread today, are dangerous. In tandem with gentamicin, they form many very toxic compounds that have a severe impact on the kidneys and liver. IN severe cases possible development of acute renal And .
  • This type of antibiotic never used simultaneously with muscle relaxants(that is, substances that promote muscle relaxation).
  • Also strictly its simultaneous use with diuretics is prohibited(especially with furosemide).

Sometimes you have to directly violate the manufacturer’s recommendations and use the medicine in combination with other drugs. In this case, the administration of gentamicin must be supervised by an experienced veterinarian. If any negative signs antibiotic use is abruptly stopped to avoid severe consequences for the animal's body.

Attention! Using this drug for more than 7-8 days may also cause severe damage. nervous system and, in particular, auricular nerve. Even if the dog survives, its hearing will be irreversibly damaged. Do not neglect the recommendations given by your veterinarian!

Positive and negative trait of this drug is a sharp increase in its concentration in all biological fluids and tissues immediately after administration (within an hour) and high penetrating ability. Thus, the medicine easily penetrates into the abdominal and chest cavity, which is very valuable in the treatment of peritonitis and pleurisy. But at the same time, the drug just as easily passes through the placental barrier, and therefore it is prescribed to pregnant animals only in the most extreme cases. The fact is that the drug can have extremely Negative influence on the state of the nervous system of the fetus, which will lead to the birth of underdeveloped, non-viable offspring.

One more note about toxic effects. Under no circumstances should the medicine be administered simultaneously with chloramphenicol! This is fraught with extremely serious consequences. In addition, it is better to avoid in every possible way its simultaneous administration along with all penicillins, erythromycin, and all sulfonamides. With extreme caution, it is administered simultaneously with drugs that impair blood clotting (heparin). Finally, Gentamicin injections are incompatible with the prescription of multivitamin complexes that contain at least one vitamin from group B.

The antibiotic does not work on anaerobic bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa.
The mechanism of the bactericidal action is due to the binding of the antibiotic to the 30S subunit of ribosomes and disruption of protein synthesis, thereby preventing the formation of a complex of transport and messenger RNA, which results in erroneous reading of RNA and the formation of non-functional proteins. In high concentrations it reduces barrier functions cytoplasmic membranes and causes the death of microorganisms.
Gentamicin sulfate for intramuscular injection quickly absorbed from the injection site into the blood and penetrates into most organs and tissues of the body. Maximum concentration The antibiotic in the blood is achieved after 1 hour, the therapeutic concentration in organs and tissues is maintained for 8-12 hours. Gentamicin sulfate solution 4% is used for the treatment of respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases, sepsis, pneumonia, pleural empyema, peritonitis, meningitis, pyelonephritis, cystitis and other animal diseases caused by antibiotic-sensitive microorganisms.

A contraindication to the use of gentamicin is the increased individual sensitivity of the animal to the drug. The use of the drug is prohibited for inflammation of the auditory nerve, severe violations kidney function, during pregnancy the drug is prescribed with caution (under the supervision of a veterinarian).

A solution of gentamicin sulfate 4% is used intramuscularly twice a day with an interval of 10-12 hours in the doses indicated in the table (based on mg of active substance per 1 kg of animal weight):

The maximum volume of solution for administration to one site in cattle and horses should not exceed 15 ml, in pigs - 10 ml, in dogs and cats - 2.5 ml.

The main symptoms of overdose are associated with the effect of gentamicin on the central nervous system (damage to the cranial nerves and associated disturbances in the functioning of the vestibular and hearing aid). In these cases, the drug is discontinued and symptomatic medications are prescribed to the animal.

Features of the action upon first use of the drug and upon its withdrawal have not been established.
You should avoid skipping the next dose of the drug, as this may lead to a decrease in its therapeutic effectiveness. If one dose is missed, the use of the drug is resumed at the same dosage and according to the same regimen.
When using the drug in accordance with this instruction side effects and complications in animals, as a rule, are not observed. In some animals, edema may develop at the injection site, which resolves spontaneously within 1-2 days. In rare cases, the animal may experience allergic and ototoxic reactions, vomiting and drowsiness. In these cases, the drug is discontinued and the animal is prescribed symptomatic medications.

Simultaneous or sequential use of gentamicin with other oto- and nephrotoxic drugs (streptomycin, kanamycin, neomycin), as well as mixing the drug in the same syringe with other drugs is not allowed.

How to give Gentamicin to a cat?

Nowadays, antibiotics are becoming increasingly popular in veterinary medicine. They have become indispensable assistants in the treatment of various diseases. Although it is worth recognizing the fact that most of these drugs cause irreparable harm to the body of four-legged animals. One of these antibiotics is Gentamicin for cats. On the one hand, it destroys harmful bacteria, and on the other, it negatively affects internal organs pet.

Still, let's try to figure out what is more good or harmful from Gentamicin? And how should you take this remedy correctly so that you don’t have to deal with a lot of problems related to your cat’s health?

Characteristics of the drug

Gentamicin is produced only in the form of a solution and is used as an intramuscular injection. As a rule, the product is transparent, but sometimes it can have a slightly yellow color. If you notice even the slightest sediment in the bottle, then you should not inject your beloved cat with this product.

As for the volume, Gentamicin ampoules are available in dosages from 2 to 10 ml. There are also dark glass bottles with a dose of 50 ml. 1 ml contains 40 mg of active substance.

Remarkable is the fact that the medication is well absorbed. Gentamicin will reach its maximum concentration in the body 60 minutes after the injection. In general, the drug will be present in the body of your beloved cat for about 12 hours. The product penetrates into the abdominal cavity especially quickly and easily.

For what diseases is treatment prescribed?

No matter how much you think you know exactly what the cat is sick with, self-treatment This drug is strictly prohibited. Unless, of course, you want the cat to die in your arms. You should definitely visit a veterinarian. Moreover, you can inject Gentamicin into a cat only when it comes to gram-negative bacteria, otherwise this medication will be of no use. And it will be possible to determine the type of bacteria that are present in your cat’s body thanks to a special culture, which will be done by a specialist.

Veterinarians attribute this medical product in the presence of many diseases, which include:

  • Various respiratory tract infections.
  • Problems urinary system, including nephritis and cystitis.
  • Arthritis and arthrosis, which are provoked by the presence of pathogenic microflora in the cat’s body.
  • Peritonitis, pneumonia, and other diseases that occur due to gram-negative bacteria.

And remember, injecting a cat with Gentamicin is not an easy task at all, since injections of such a drug are very painful. Therefore, the animal must be held very tightly. To carry out this procedure, you should take an assistant or use a special retainer bag.

The instructions for use of Gentamicin for cats state that the drug is administered carefully, adhering to the established regimen:

  • On the 1st day, the drug should be administered at a rate of 1.1 ml per 10 kg of animal weight. Do this procedure 2 times a day.
  • On the 2nd and all subsequent days, the dosage of Gentamicin for the cat remains the same, only the drug must be injected once a day.

Some veterinarians administer Gentamicin intravenously to cats using a catheter. But this is a rather complicated procedure and the instructions say nothing about it. Therefore, such injections can only be performed by a top-class professional. To ordinary people or beginners in this business should not perform such a dangerous trick. And the point is not at all that not everyone can install a catheter correctly. It’s just that not everyone will be able to calculate the dosage of the drug and take into account the fact that when intravenous administration Gentamicin penetrates the body almost at lightning speed and easily reaches high concentrations.

Drug overdose

If you do not adhere to the dosage while using this medication or exceed the time limit for using Gentamicin, then an overdose of this drug may occur. Such poisoning may have a negative effect on your hearing and kidneys. pet. He may also experience allergic reaction, which will be accompanied by rash and itching. Problems with the eighth cerebral nerve are also possible.

And most importantly, remember that long-term use of Gentamicin has a very bad effect on the cat’s body. If you use this medication for more than 7 days, severe destructive damage to the kidneys and nervous system may occur. But most often the development of acute renal failure. In most cases, such problems lead to the death of a pet.

In what cases is it prohibited to give the drug?

You should also pay attention to the fact that in some situations it is completely prohibited to give Gentamicin injections to cats. The most common of them include:

  • Pregnancy. The drug penetrates the placental barrier very quickly, so it can cause irreparable harm to the baby.
  • Lactation period, since Gentamicin sulfate, together with milk, easily penetrates the kitten’s body.
  • A non-sterile syringe that contains drug residues, because it is difficult to predict the interaction of this drug with them. As a result, such a compound can cause inflammation and various side effects.
  • Having kidney problems.
  • Taking a variety of drugs that are nephrotoxic, muscle relaxants and ototoxic medications.
  • Greater sensitivity to Gentamicin.
  • Very young age. Giving this antibiotic to a newborn kitten is strictly not recommended. And only in very rare cases, with the permission of a specialist, can a solution be administered intravenously at a rate of 2.2 ml per 1 kg of weight. That is, it is necessary to reduce the dose of this medication by 2 times.

As you can see, Gentamicin is quite dangerous medical drug, with whom you should not joke. But still, situations may arise in a cat’s life when he will be simply irreplaceable. Therefore, you should not be afraid of using Gentamicin; the main thing is to strictly adhere to the instructions for using this drug, and also carry out this type of treatment under the supervision of a good professional. Then everything will definitely be just fine for you and your cat.
