But sometimes such fever is difficult for patients to tolerate and can lead to serious complications. This is especially true for young patients, since infections in children always have more severe course than in adults. To normalize body temperature, antipyretic drugs are used. Suspension or syrup: which one is correct?

Sometimes there is confusion about the name of the product: is it a syrup or a suspension? In fact, children's Nurofen is produced in the form of a suspension - a suspension of medicinal powder in liquid form. But it is often called syrup for its viscous consistency and pleasant sweet taste(orange or strawberry), which children really like.

When to lower the temperature

Pediatricians say that not every fever needs to be treated. Low (up to 38.5°C) temperature in the first days viral infection- an indicator that the child’s immunity is working and the body is fighting infection. It is normal if the temperature rises even after vaccination, which involves the introduction of weakened strains of pathogens to form stable immunity.

But there are still indications for prescribing antipyretics:

  • fever above 38.5 degrees (febrile fever);
  • the child feels unwell at a relatively low temperature ( headache, pallor, severe lethargy, sweating);
  • post-vaccination reactions medium degree severity (doctors recommend giving the child an antipyretic immediately after vaccination and 6 hours after it, regardless of whether there is a fever or not);
  • fever and anxiety during teething.

Not only did I not always calculate the strength when pressing the pump, and too much medicine was poured out to the baby at once, but my son never wanted to lie still until I finished all this dancing with shaking and drawing syrup into the syringe. Everything is easier and faster with a spoon.”

Excellent product, we’ll take more.”

Many mothers are faced with a situation where the temperature stubbornly returns. First of all, we will consider the most popular and most frequently prescribed medicine by pediatricians - Nurofen .

Nurofen is produced by Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare International.

After reading about this brand, I became terribly interested in the fact that initially, and indeed, this company was engaged (and is engaged) in the production of cleaning and detergents for home. Here are some facts from Wiki:

What is Nurofen?

Nurofen for children is an antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic drug. Nurofen for children contains the active ingredient ibuprofen - medicinal substance group of non-narcotic analgesics. Nurofen for children should not be prescribed simultaneously with other drugs from the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, as well as acetylsalicylic acid.

Nurofen is produced in three “guises”:

1. in suppositories (in our opinion – suppositories)

Nurofen® for Children offers suppositories specifically for babies aged 3 months to 2 years. It is convenient to give it to a child if he often spits up, with nausea or vomiting, or loss of appetite. Nurofen® for children in the form of suppositories can be stored at temperatures up to +25°. Each suppository contains 60 mg of ibuprofen. Other ingredients: solid fat 1 (Vitepsol N 15), solid fat 2 (Vitepsol W 45).

Nurofen suppositories for children are intended for rectal use. The drug is recommended for patients weighing at least 6 kg and at least 3 months old. The recommended maximum single dose of ibuprofen is 10 mg/kg of the child's body weight. The recommended maximum daily dose of ibuprofen is 20-30 mg/kg of the child's body weight.
An interval of at least 6 hours should be maintained between single doses.

Children weighing 6-8 kg are usually prescribed 0.5-1 suppositories of Nurofen for children no more than 3 times a day.
Children weighing 8-12.5 kg are usually prescribed 1 suppository no more than 4 times a day. (piluli.kharkov.ua)

2. in suspension

“Long action - up to 8 hours.
Nurofen® for children contains ibuprofen, which helps not only reduce the temperature, but also relieve the baby from pain that often accompanies a cold (for example, sore throat or ear pain, headache, muscle aches).
The suspension does not contain sugar, alcohol or dyes, which is especially important for your child.
Orange and strawberry are children’s favorite flavors.”

The active ingredient in the suspension is ibuprofen (5 ml of suspension contains 100 mg of ibuprofen).

Additional substances in a suspension with orange taste:
maltitol syrup, citric acid, sodium citrate, sodium chloride, sodium saccharin, domiphen bromide, polysorbate 80, xanthan gum, orange flavor, glycerin, purified water.

Additional substances in a suspension with strawberry taste:
maltitol syrup, citric acid, sodium citrate, sodium chloride, sodium saccharin, domiphen bromide, polysorbate 80, xanthan gum, strawberry flavor, glycerin, purified water.

Nurofen for children is used as a means of symptomatic therapy for pain syndrome medium intensity in children aged from 3 months (with body weight more than 5 kg) to 12 years.
Nurofen for children is also used as an antipyretic after immunization and for acute inflammatory diseases in children weighing more than 5 kg.

Children from 3 to 6 months weighing at least 5 kg are usually prescribed 2.5 ml of Nurofen suspension for children 1-3 times a day.
Children aged 6 to 12 months are usually recommended to take 2.5 ml of suspension 1-4 times a day.
Children from 1 to 3 years old are usually prescribed 5 ml of Nurofen suspension for children 1-3 times a day.
Children from 4 to 6 years old are usually prescribed 7.5 ml of suspension 1-3 times a day.
Children 7-9 years old are usually prescribed 10 ml of suspension 1-3 times a day.
For children 10-12 years old, as a rule, it is recommended to take 15 ml of Nurofen suspension for children 1-3 times a day.

For children, the dose of ibuprofen is calculated taking into account body weight; usually no more than 5-10 mg/kg of the child’s body weight is prescribed at a time. The maximum recommended daily dose is 20-30 mg of ibuprofen per kilogram of the child's body weight. The minimum acceptable interval between taking single doses is 6 hours.

(Source: piluli.kharkov.ua)

Do not use the suspension for more than 3 days as an antipyretic, or for more than 5 days as an analgesic.

3. in tablets (for older children)

Nurofen® tablets, as well as Nurofen® suppositories and suspensions for children, contain the active ingredient ibuprofen, but in tablets its dosage is higher (200 mg): it is intended for children aged six years and older (with a child weighing more than 20 kg ). Children from 6 to 12 years old are prescribed to take 1 tablet of Nurofen for children no more than 4 times a day under the supervision of a doctor. The maximum recommended daily dose of ibuprofen for children over 6 years of age is 800 mg, for adults – 1200 mg. (piluli.kharkov.ua).

Other ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium citrate, stearic acid, colloidal silicon anhydride, carmellose sodium, talc, acacia, sucrose, titanium dioxide, macrogol 6000.

Take, for example, a child weighing 11 kg.

If you need to take no more than 10 mg/kg of ibuprofen per kilogram of weight one time orally, then the calculation is carried out like this.

We take the suspension, 5 ml of suspension contains 100 mg of ibuprofen.

The child weighs 11 kg. The formula is simple.

11kg * 10 mg/kg = 110 mg – single dose of ibuprofen. I always take the maximum number to make sure it works. Those. if they advise no more than 10 mg/kg, then I take exactly 10 mg/kg for the calculation.

In 5 ml - 100 mg of ibuprofen, and in? ml – 110 mg. Using the proportion method, we derive a single dose of Nurofen

(5*110/100) = 5.5 ml. It is best not to exceed this single dose of Nurofen.

Personal opinion

In my experience, Nurofen suspension is very sweet. So much so that it causes a vomiting reaction in the child. It needs to be given in large quantities, which is not the best for the child. My children, when taking Nurofen in suspension, spat it back out. Not only is the taste very synthetic, but there is also a lot of sugar in it. The children asked to drink constantly.

It’s good that Nurofen suppositories appeared. But I still switched to another antipyretic, since in 80% of cases of taking Nurofen, the temperature remained at reduced level about 2-3 hours, then rose again. I had to use other antipyretics to bring down the temperature.

And one more thing, Nurofen did not take my children’s temperature above 39.5. It took 40 minutes to bring down another temperature (39 degrees). And then only up to 38.5.

As for the side effects, very often children were allergic to it, a rash around the mouth and on the hands, cheeks flushed. She didn't itch, but it wasn't pleasant either. It is clear that this is individual, that the rash is due to the components, and not to ibuprofen. But you can’t separate it :)))

In terms of popularity, the drug is not far behind Nurofen - Panadol baby, active ingredient paracetamol

This drug is produced by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (England).

Panadol baby is used in the presence of pain, because in addition to being an antipyretic, it is also an analgesic.

Children aged 1 to 2 years are usually prescribed 7 ml of the drug 3-4 times a day with an interval of at least 4 hours.
Children aged 2 to 3 years are usually prescribed 9 ml of the drug 3-4 times a day with an interval of at least 4 hours.
Children aged 3 to 6 years are usually prescribed 10 ml of the drug 3-4 times a day with an interval of at least 4 hours.
Children aged 6 to 9 years are usually prescribed 14 ml of the drug 3-4 times a day with an interval of at least 4 hours.
Children aged 9 to 12 years are usually prescribed 20 ml of the drug 3-4 times a day with an interval of at least 4 hours. (pills.kharkiv.ua)

Personal opinion

I don’t really like the taste of Panadol Baby, it’s bitter. But still better than the cloying taste of Nurofen.

The liquid is thick and viscous. Drinking this... well, is not for everyone. It is very viscous and difficult to swallow. But Panadol is smart, it brought down the temperature to 39.5 in 30 minutes.

Is there some more Panadol baby (suppositories) . The active substance is paracetamol. They have a dosage of 125 mg and 250 mg of paracetamol in 1 suppository.

Used in children from 3 months to 12 years as: - an antipyretic for acute respiratory diseases, influenza, childhood infections, post-vaccination reactions and other conditions accompanied by an increase in body temperature; - an analgesic for pain of mild to moderate intensity, including: headaches and toothaches, muscle pain, neuralgia, pain from injuries and burns.

Children aged 3 months to 3 years are usually prescribed 1 suppository 3 times a day with an interval of at least 4 hours. (piluli.kharkov.ua)

Paracetamol, when administered rectally, is absorbed more slowly than when administered orally, with its peak concentration in the blood plasma reaching after 1 hour, while when administered orally, after 30 minutes to 1 hour (Clissold S.P., 1986; Kolloffel W.J., 1996).

Everything is simple, according to the same scheme as Nurofen.

Let's take a suspension. 5 ml contains 120 mg of paracetamol. Single dose – 10-15 mg/kg.

For a child weighing 11 kg, a single dose will be:

11kg*15 mg/kg = 165 mg – single dose of paracetamol.

Using the proportion method, we calculate how much Panadol baby should be given:

(5*165/120) = 6.875 ml of Panadol Baby - a single dose.

The antipyretic with the active ingredient paracetamol is produced in the form of suppositories called Efferalgan (candles)

Produced by UPSA

1 rectal suppository Efferalgan 80 contains:
Paracetamol – 80 mg;

1 rectal suppository Efferalgan 150 contains:
Paracetamol – 150 mg;

Personal opinion

I liked the effect of Efferalgan suppositories, they brought down the child’s temperature well, and in the presence of rotavirus, when you can’t put anything in your mouth, there is only one way out. In the presence of diarrhea (mild), after 20 minutes what was pushed in came out, but the temperature was reduced from 39.5 to 38.5.

Eat Efferalgan (syrup)

For children, doses of the drug are selected depending on body weight, while a single dose should not exceed 15 mg/kg body weight, and a daily dose should not exceed 60 mg/kg body weight.

Personal opinion

Children are prescribed 1 suppository at a time, but in some cases (age and weight) one suppository is not enough to reduce the rate and pain. In this case, you should not decide on the use of Analdim yourself; it is better to call your doctor or the emergency room and get a consultation.

One candle did not bring my child’s temperature down to 39.5 degrees. Although its composition makes it possible to think that it should do this, since it is designed to “take” more high temperatures than Nurofen and Panadol. At the emergency room they told me that 1 piece was not enough for the child’s age and weight. But you shouldn’t prescribe it yourself - that’s for doctors! Children under one year old should not take it.

This is not possible, because the drug contains analgin and diphenhydramine - not the best for young children. Therefore, firstly, it must be prescribed by a doctor, and secondly, it is used for in case of emergency, when the tempo is not interrupted by anything else.

For my children I chose Children's Advil. I first came across him on the advice of friends, many thanks to them, in 2012.

At that time, my children were already refusing Nurofen, they were getting sick of Panadol, I was in a little despair, because there was no longer a drug at hand that could be used urgently

Manufactured by Wyeth Consumer Healthcare, USA

This drug is available for children over 6 months in the following forms:

Drops for children 6-23 months

Repeat dose every 6 to 8 hours as needed.

Just use the measuring device that comes with the product to be sure you are giving the correct dose.

5 - 7 kg 6 -11 months 1.25 ml
8 - 11 kg 12-23 months 1.875 ml

Here, each 1.25 ml contains 50 mg of ibuprofen.

Based on this dosage, I had to give 2.5 ml drops to a child weighing 10 kg. But I gave strictly according to age - 1.875 ml of a measuring syringe. They take into account, apparently, not the limit values of the min and max of allowed ibuprofen (5-10 mg/kg), but the average - 7.5 mg/kg.

The drops are translucent, thin, do not taste chemical, and are pleasant for small children.

He just shot it down with a bang. The last time I had pneumonia, Advil drops brought my temperature down from 40.5 degrees in half an hour to 39.3. And he lowered it further. I really pray for him. But we have already grown from drops, so we move on to Syrup for children 2-11 years old

The syrup came in two flavors:

With a chewy taste)))

Grape flavored

This is what they look like in real life

Compared to lipstick, so you can see the height

They are available in this flavor

Appears to be liquid

It's blue

It's red. I like the taste better than blue, red bakes stronger tongue. The taste is not strong, there is no obvious chemistry. It's just a taste that hides the bitterness. In terms of consistency, I can say that they are much more pleasant to drink than Nurofen and Panadol. They are more liquid and easier to swallow. This is definitely a plus.

A measuring cup is included in the kit and the dosage according to age and weight is immediately written on the bottle.

Shake well before use.
Repeat dose every 6 to 8 hours as needed.
Do not use more than 4 times a day.
Find correct dosage on the diagram. If possible, use weight for dosing; otherwise, use age.
Just use the measuring device that comes with the product to be sure you are giving the correct dose. A regular kitchen teaspoon may not provide the correct amount of medicine.

5 ml syrup contains 100 mg of ibuprofen.

I give Vanya, who weighs 19 kg, 1.5 measuring cups. And from the calculation formula I should give 9.5 ml when calculating from 10 mg/kg. If you calculate the average (7.5 mg/kg), then you get 7.1 ml. I measured it, 6.5 ml of water fits in a 1.5 measuring cup.

Based on the table, 1.5 glasses are given to children weighing 16-21 kg :))) it’s somehow ambiguous, but it works)))

For older children there is chewable tablets for children 6-11 years old

21-27 kg 6-8 years 2 pcs
27-32 kg 9-10 years 2 ½ pieces
33-43 kg 11 years 3 pieces

When converting units, keep in mind that 1 lb is 0.454 kg

IN chewable tablets 1 tablet contains 100 mg ibuprofen

For children 6-11 years old there are regular pills

up to 21 kg up to 6 years, consult your doctor
21-32 kg 6-10 years 2 pcs
32-43 kg 11 years 3 pieces

Find the correct dose on the chart. If possible, use weight for dose; otherwise use age.
Repeat dose every 6-8 hours if necessary.
Do not use more than 4 times a day.

The tablets contain 1 tablet - 100 mg of ibuprofen
